Through the history of jazz, there have been several outstanding duos producing outstanding music--Charlie and Dizzy, Ella and Louis, Dave and Paul Desmond and my favorite Wayne and Josef. However, Pat and Lyle have been one of my most treasured and brilliant combination. Not much else to say.

I remember when I had a jazz radio show about the time this album came out--I listened to this very tune for first time and was hooked to Pat's music. I even played it occasionally on air and would almost always have someone call me and ask, "who is that"? True story. Additioanlly, I absolutely love the brazilian rift to it. Just an awsome tune.

Amazing soloing by Pat and Lyle! I learn so much by transcribing them. It seems as though a small fraction gets into my playing, but they are among the world’s greatest improvisers and my favorites. The music of Metheny and Mays is a constant source of inspiration to grow as a musician.
When i was younger I didn't understand what was goin on in this beautiful music... but i knew it was as close 2 perfect as i've ever heard... and i 1st heard this played on a Buffalo jazz radio station... but didn't kno who this wonderful group was... so i'd wait 4 it 2 come on each night b/c remember this was pre internet and if u didn't catch the name u were basically screwed...haha anyways... now in my late 30's i can finally do this music justice...thx 4 this awesome video Chileanskies!!!!

It's not just an outstanding piano solo, is a EXPANDED piano solo. In the second half Lyle adds sinth brass and organ sounds via MIDI, controlling volume with a pedal probably. It is not easy, requires a higher grade of concentration and musicality, is orchestral improvisation. Masterwork

Well Lyle was a master of that. He took care of most of the orchestrations in the PMG. If you carefully listen to the Pat’s solo album, you’ll heart great music but a different sound… in Minuano for instance, the intro was composed by Lyle, and only when the guitar theme kicks in is music by Pat.. and ao it applies to many other examples in their production.
a song is dreamy and mysterious. Fantastic. When the audience comes something unexpected that persists for the duration of the song. Something beautiful. Really nice. Pat Metheny is an artist angel come down to earth to enlighten us and let us hope with the music of the deep sky.

It was an incredible time in Italy I must say... the best time ever when the economy was still flourishing and MammaRAI was still a TV. Today... no comment really... The programme was called DOC and was hosted by Renzo Arbore and Gegé Telesforo (grandissimo solo sul blues Nostalgia in Time square!). I know Pat personally and a friend of mine is his drummer (Antonio Sanchez - that is). Pat LOVES performing in Italy as he gets a great vibe in return from the audience. Most people might not have noticed the small print on one of Pat's Albums where he thanks Italians and the passion that we give back to him. Lyle, if you're reading this man, you're on fire on that solo. WE WANT MORE MUSIC FROM YOU MAN!

Pat Metheny, Detroit Jazz Festival 2018 - Detroit Jazz Artist in Residence. Performed with the sole surviving member of the John Coltrane Quartet- Bassist Par Excellence', Mr.Ron Carter. * Pat Metheny Played his acoustic guitar to Ron Carter's extremely nimble fingering, Upright Bass. * It was so beautiful I was in tears! Unbelievable Talent, Lyle was definitely IN THE ZONE ! Only wish video had captured the Artistry of the entire group. Horn section, all the nuances, Paul Wertico, on Percussion, Do Not Forget the sound as a colloborative expression with the additional cymbals and chimes.
