I was born in Brooklyn. We then lived in a apt. In Queens. Then in 59 we moved out to Nassau County on Long Island. That was the Golden Age for that area. I miss it.
Pat Metheny simply put is a pure genius. This was recorded back in 1991 and the music played here was to just ahead of its time. Here we are in 2010 and it simply transcends time because Path's music is timeless. Keep jammin' Pat becase there is absolutely no one this planet that can comes close to your Genre
The early material holds a special place in my soul. While driving home to Colorado springs I turned my little sister, 22yr old on to pm, lm . She became an instant fanatic! She was a prize winning pianist and collected all the music from PM, LM.
First time I ever saw him play was at the Maples in Pointe Claire, Quebec...I was maybe 17 at the time so it was 1977 or 78....those opening chords hit and my life was changed forever!
Phil Collins played San Lorenzo on star turn on the radio, about 77, I was 17, I went out and bought the album, and that was it, Phase Dance, hooked for life.
Phase Dance is one of the best openers of all time. When the band broke into this, it was such a thrill. The record Travels is a beautiful document of how good they were live.
I've been fortunate to see Pat and his band play several times over the years. Each time is different, and fulfilling to the ears and the soul. I admire Pat's humble persona, his playing, writing, and what he gives back to the music community. Thank you Pat! I hope to see you in Santa Rosa Summer 2014 with the Unity band.
Same here, I started listening to him in 1983. He is the biggest influence in my life, not just music. Sadly, he rarely comes to my part of the world and I only got to watch him live 4 or 5 times in the last 26 years.
I first heard Pat's music on a jazz show back in 85. I was hooked ever since--even more so when I saw his first live show in Portland OR. A true musician. Lyle too.
I grew up on classic rock. I started playing guitar seriously at 15(1983) and i was seeing Metheny mentioned in the guitar mags. Bought this album...it was, to my ears like travelling down roads through the vast plains. It influenced my playing and composing forever. Just beyond beautiful.
This man has complete mastery of the fretboard. His tone is beautiful and his style lyrical and innovative. A truly wonderful guitarist who has great technique but not to the detriment of meaningful composition.
great vid.....been a fan since the 70's, but never saw the group until late 90's....never saw a live video of phase dance until this one.....i did see pmg play phase dance live during the 'as it is' tour from about 5+ years ago....seeing/hearing phase dance performed live was a dream come true!
The reason this group works is the synchronicity of each performer with Pat. Lyle is by far one of the most unique and creative pianists in the jazz community. He is the treble to Pat's bass and vice versa. They equate joy to any listener's ears, and this song is as climatic as Are you going with me.
Hearing Phase Dance it was pretty obvious the talent Pat and Lyle had from the jump. They were a great duo, and this edition of the band may have been their best.
I was lucky and saw this group in Sunrise Fl. back in the late 90's. They were incredible. Lyle Mays is the real secret weapon in the group. His grasp of harmony is fantastic. Metheny has so much energy.
My first Pat Metheny concert was 18 March 1995 at the Tower Theater at 69th and Ludlow Streets in Philadelphia, PA, during the We Live Here tour. My second was that same year, 15 July, on the hottest day I ever experienced (103℉/39.5℃ actual temperature, 138℉/58.9℃ heat index) at the Mann Music Center (now the Mann Center for the Performing Arts) in Fairmount Park at 52nd Street and Parkside Avenue in Philadelphia. I have loved Pat Metheny since hearing the first PMG album in 1990.
This music remember me when through the highway going to get some waves windsurfing(i love it also) in Paracas (50 Km south of Lima), i listened this song, was very nice!!
Yes I did. I lived in Sunrise. I played all over So. Florida. I had a great time for a while. That concert was really something. It was the first and last time I've seen him. One of these days I'll catch him again. He takes alot of heat from some critics. I think he's great. His music really hits you in the chest. Like a Monet or something. He's different from your average artist. Lyle Mays is a genius.
@GigglingGirI U have great tastes in Jazz Guitarists! All of those guys u mentioned are amazing artists who have stood the test of time over the decades and have never fallen below anything but GREAT!
He's a genius. I heard him some time ago on a concert. He started with Phase Dance. His not afraid of simplicity in music. He knows simple things are the most beautiful.
I agree lanae 1111, the Travels live record, and the Offramp album initiated me into the huge diverse world of Methenys great music and excellent musicianship.
Wow, Small world. It really was wonderful wasn't it. It's good to know that there are still great artists left in this world of corporate excrement. God bless you too. I use to have a neat little jazz group there. Jazz Survivors. That really was some show. Lyle Mays is the man.
I first listened to this piece because in one of my jazz books (I play sax) there is one piece where over the top it said "in the style of Phase Dance by Pat Metheny." I love it! brilliant solos!
...saw my first Metheny show at the University of Miami in 1979 and have been addicted ever since. That same week I saw the Dixie Dregs on campus as well...
yes my fried you are right bout the equipment being used in the video, and also very correct that a good guitar or bass makes a better player, or make him sound good but yet its the touch in his fingers and how he/she feels it on the inside is what makes the music sound beautiful.
There's a video of him being interviewed by Regis Philbin from that same period, & he explains about being stuck with that toothbrush on his guitar (it's not romantic or anything, though!)
Lyle Freaking Mays. He practically changes keys there around 4:15 or so and just keeps on going. How many times has he played this tune in his career by the time this is recorded and he still keeps it fresh? Whoa.
Glad you found it after all these years...he's been busy in that time...hope you have too! There is so much good music this man's created...check out Last Train Home too...and Are you going with me...perfect for...romance. :-)
Pensé hace años que tenía su discografía complta, craso error, apenas hoy tengo algo,,ha tocado con tantos y diferentes músicos, que no lo pillas,MONSTRUO|||||||
To my dearest on 8N, SVH; hope you like this-it is as good as you would hear in the jazz idiom of today- this is the beautiful song I am learning to play at present (under supervision from my great jazz guitar teacher in Atlanta, Georgia (Guy Fenocchi)- the man in the video, wearing the striped t-shirt is Pat Metheny; his lovely guitar is a Gibson ES-175- on close inspection you may notice that he has removed the bottom pick-up and replaced it with duck-tape; in addition, you may notice a tooth brush attached to the tailpiece, to keep it secure-I kid you not! I also have the same guitar but will never be able to play like Metheny; unlike Pat's guitar, mine is a sun-burst complexion and her name is Jillene, in honor of Jillene Luce, the great jazz pianist going around. Every time I play this tune, I too go into a state of ecstasy as you may see on Pat's face when he gets warmed up-wonder why? Think about it and you may be just right. Love, Max Xx
I absolutely love Pat. When you watch him play. He looks so sloppy and unorthodox. If you turn down the sound you are like "what crappy technique, I bet this guy sounds like crap!" Then you turn up the sound and it's magical. So much feel and emotion. I just love his playing.
There will never be another band like this. Genius all the way through. Amazing….still
The music of Pat, Lyle and the Pat Metheny Group is something UNIQUE, UNREPEATABLE and WONDERFUL !!!
I was born in Brooklyn. We then lived in a apt. In Queens. Then in 59 we moved out to Nassau County on Long Island. That was the Golden Age for that area. I miss it.
This is like one of my favorite songs of all time!! I grew up on this stuff
me too

2021 here. Hes still going strong. Just saw him Friday. Amazing show.
Phase Dance was composed in 1977 and released in 1978, the song really is timeless though.

Met him once, it is a great memory. Got an autograph and I NEVER ask for autographs he was the exception.
I’d have asked for a lesson. 🤣🤣🤣
Lyle Mays is so so underated. What a great pianist.
Lo mejor
He is/was the best of the BEST!!!!
The early material holds a special place in my soul. While driving home to Colorado springs I turned my little sister, 22yr old on to pm, lm . She became an instant fanatic! She was a prize winning pianist and collected all the music from PM, LM.
And that's why Pat said "he was so innovative"....and to ME he was so great. RIP
PHASE DANCE RULES! ONE OF HIS BEST SONGS!
rate this comment if you agree
I've seen PMG play this song in concert a few times. I never, NEVER tire of it, even today. Incredible band and musicianship.
Absolute perfection. Rip Lyle!

Maples Inn
You are one of the luckiest guys to see him at that great Ol bar...wow
+Floyd 69 you knew the Mapes? What a place!

Tempi grandiosi e liberi quando si andava ai concerti ad ascoltare Pat Meth.

First heard the 2LP "Travels" in 1983, and I was hooked. Heard them live the following year.
懐かしさがこみ上げてくる曲。様々な感情がある🎵😃サンキュー😆💕✨
This man has complete mastery of the fretboard. His tone is beautiful and his style lyrical and innovative. A truly wonderful guitarist who has great technique but not to the detriment of meaningful composition.
The BEST group in the WORLD.
It's amazing how Pat and Lyle live in a perfect symbiosis! Amazing music!

FAbuloso!
This is just great! So rare to see Pat's inner acting, smiling with the audience!
The reason this group works is the synchronicity of each performer with Pat. Lyle is by far one of the most unique and creative pianists in the jazz community. He is the treble to Pat's bass and vice versa. They equate joy to any listener's ears, and this song is as climatic as Are you going with me.
A complete Master peace with Awesome dynamic range ! Thank you Pat !
Hearing Phase Dance it was pretty obvious the talent Pat and Lyle had from the jump. They were a great duo, and this edition of the band may have been their best.
Life would be a great mistake without Metheny's music
Oh yeah bro...
Also sang Zarathustra.
oh hey steve
Metheny's music take me to one place that philosopher would call of metaphysics.
Love this song!!!! Love u Pat!!! 😘🥰😘
so wonderful
Thanks! I saw him perform in Syracuse in 1984 or so. Great concert.
I was lucky and saw this group in Sunrise Fl. back in the late 90's. They were incredible. Lyle Mays is the real secret weapon in the group. His grasp of harmony is fantastic. Metheny has so much energy.

Someone Who Made me love fusion at all

Epic song and singer
He wears them...so that we don't have to.
Thank you Pat Metheny for your selfless devotion to mankind!

Love Pat! Great music!
great post
This has more of the late 1970s funk feel , definitely can see this on a San Diego sail boat gliding through the Marina.
im a little stoner in high school right now and i love Pat's music! =] im the only one i know that has even heard of him and im just fine with that =D
40 years ago i was like you. still lovin it!
He's a genius. I heard him some time ago on a concert. He started with Phase Dance. His not afraid of simplicity in music. He knows simple things are the most beautiful.
Saw them a few days latter in Porto, Portugal as well. Massive!!!

Great to hear again. Thank you for uploading this terrific video of Pat Matheny Group, live!

I remember having the ECM pressing of this album back in 1979. It was spectacular then and kinda still is. Thanks for the posting.
awesome
Such amazing music.... ever since I first heard them in 1984, 25 years ago, I've been crazy about PMG.
The best of the best
I first listened to this piece because in one of my jazz books (I play sax) there is one piece where over the top it said "in the style of Phase Dance by Pat Metheny." I love it! brilliant solos!
Excelente!!!
Beautiful ! Pat Metheny is a genius :)
...saw my first Metheny show at the University of Miami in 1979 and have been addicted ever since. That same week I saw the Dixie Dregs on campus as well...

I miss these days of past
He left everything up there.
this is from a TV broadcast in portugal. this was taken from a VHS recording of that broadcast. it isn't available to purchase.
Lyle Mays тоже красавец! Шикарный пианист-импровизатор!!!!
finally, i have found a decent quality video of this song live!
Thank-you for posting - clips of Phase Dance seem to be very rare!
Best ever
Great post, Made my Day.
yes my fried you are right bout the equipment being used in the video, and also very correct that a good guitar or bass makes a better player, or make him sound good but yet its the touch in his fingers and how he/she feels it on the inside is what makes the music sound beautiful.

This music is...well you know...
my favorite of this is from the live album " Travels" from 1983.
For those not familiar, that's the CD to get you into Pat Metheny ;-)
Black man and woman at drums, unbelievable in Portugal in 1991 !
amazing!!!
One of my "Desert Island albums" ( pick ten albums to listen to if you were stranded forever)
Love the toothbrush in the bridge . A fact hopefully not lost to those who follow.
Angus Podgorny
ha
There's a video of him being interviewed by Regis Philbin from that same period, & he explains about being stuck with that toothbrush on his guitar (it's not romantic or anything, though!)
que coisa mágica!!!!
Hell yeah!!!

@DESMORNR24 Keep in mind that song was on an album that came out in 1978. Pat's music is timeless. I would say he is my favorite guitarist.

Wow he just have an amazing sound. It makes me feel about some progressive rock band in their improvisation era. Definitely this guy is a genius.
Ahhhhh, que granda segundo canal!!! ;)
