  • The owner of any brand new Mercury outboard motor will find it hard to resist the temptation to immediately drop the throttle and feel the sensation of smooth, unrelenting power. With a new motor, however, it will pay to walk before you run wide open. Exercise a little restraint and follow the break-in procedure devised by Mercury engineers, and your new motor can deliver a lifetime of dependable performance.

    wish there was a video for the smaller motors like the 9.9 thru 25hp witch these motor do not allow for the use vessel view 40Hp and above so its really hard to tell the exact rpm on smaller motors without installing a tachometer third party SO IF YOUR LISTENING MERCURY it would be nice to see a video for the smaller outboard motors My 2021 9.9hp electric start has great instructions and isn't that hard to follow but would have been nice to add vessel view to the smaller engines

    The manual states "For the first two hours of operation, run the engine at varied throttle settings up to 4500RPM or at three-quarter throttle, and at full throttle for approximately one minute every ten minutes." (pg. 41) In this video, I don't see 100% (6000RPM) reached for the first two hours. Can you help clarify - is it required to run at 100% full throttle for every 1 min / 10 min for the first 2 hours, as this is not demonstrated in this video ?

      Even though this video does not explicitly show the full throttle runs, yes, you will want to follow the manual. Varied throttle settings between idle and 4500rpm for the first two hours, with full throttle runs for one minute every ten minutes. Great question!

    Show the first two hours we are supposed to run the engine at varies rpms and full throttle every 10 minutes? Why didn’t the video say that I thought that meant do it after the two hour mark?

      People would complain the engine is used with 10+ hours on it.
      Also the engine needs to be installed on boat for the break in. The engine needs to be under load. This will make the requirements for break in be to the dealers.
      They would have to add 10hours of labour to the engine cost.
      Also it's your new toy, you want to be the one to take care of it and no one is going to look after it better than the owner.

    Should I let the engine cool between hour 1 & 2? What about the other 8 hours? Do you need to take a break and let the engine cool between each hour?

    • @MercuryMarine
      @MercuryMarine  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question! It is best to break the engine in continuously, so you do not need to stop and let it cool. If you can break the engine in in a day or two of continuous use, that would be best.

    So after receiving my boat. I went out on the water and found out my RPM’s are running 7000. After talking to some friends they said gauges are wrong or I would’ve blown that motor. I vary my speed but it’s hard to know what my RPM actually are. I haven’t had any noticeable issues. So my question is if I’ve broken it in wrong. What would be some issue that I may not notice? I probably have about an hour on it and I’m sure I’ve gone over 4500k rpm’s.

      Hello Mondos, please contact our product support team for assistance. They can help you determine your maximum rpm setpoint and assist in getting your tachometer set correctly. Once you have your tachometer dialed in, you can continue with your break-in period. If you have not experienced any engine warning tones and you've operated the engine for only an hour, you've not done any damage.

      Hey Pete! That sounds like a summary of what is in the manual, so not incorrect. Be sure to check your operator's manual for specific instructions and details to ensure your engine is broken-in fully. 👍

    Is “wide open” 4500rpm?

    • @MercuryMarine
      @MercuryMarine  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wide-open throttle ranges vary by engine line. The 150hp Fourstroke has a wide-open throttle range of 5000-5800, where 150hp ProXS FourStroke (engine in video) has a wide-open throttle range of 5200-6000. The break-in procedure within the manual for this engine suggests for the first two hours of operation, run the engine at varied throttle
      settings up to 4500 RPM or at three‑quarter throttle. Also, incorporate running the engine at full throttle for
      approximately one minute every ten minutes during this two-hour period.

      @@MercuryMarine Thanks for the quick response. I have passed my 2 hour break-in period. I was a little worried about going over 4500rpm so I never went full throttle during that time. I have about 4 hours on the engine so my next trip out I’ll go full throttle as noted above.

      @@MercuryMarine what's my optimal operating rpm, where my 60 hp mercury 4 stroke is happiest? My friend told me I was crazy for running mine at what I did. But that's what mercury website said

    • @MercuryMarine
      @MercuryMarine  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@treyferguson2965 the 60hp engine should be topping out somewhere between 5500 and 6000 rpm at wide open throttle. Your engine is designed be used anywhere from idle all the way up to 6000, however you wish to run it. You will find the peak performance in this engine falls in the 5700-6000 range, and peak fuel economy is generally at cruising speed for most vessels, at approximately 3500-4500 rpm. Check out our performance reports page to see data for boats similar to yours with a 60hp engine for a better idea of what your package will yield as far as numbers. You wanna hear these guy says about Mercury in this video. Apparently Mercury are just a sporting goods company that just make indoor bowling equipment, while he tries to say Yamaha is way better. Mercury started making outboard motors in 1939, Yamaha made pianos until they got into outboards in 1960 so is Yamaha just a piano company? 7:20 minute mark in this video th-cam.com/video/sjalplnObI8/w-d-xo.html
