I listen to a wide range of music but the stuff I love and always have loved the most is core. I never had a word to describe me that I felt comfortable with regarding music. When I was younger I'd secretly listen to my heavy music and act like I liked the things everyone else listened to (some of it was great tbf) but when I heard COREKID, it just hit. I've always been a corekid, always will be a corekid. Now I rep that merch proudly. It's also an awesome community.
Nik, I love how you explained about the branding of your merch. It does make a difference that the term gives someone a sense of being a part of a community regardless of the haters. Not trying to sh*t on other reactors, but COREKID makes sense to me. core kid for life ✊
It’s cool to see so many different fans kinda get together, myself I’m more an emo kid with a good amount of grunge, I’ve been slowly getting into more heavy bands, but I just like being here and exploring new music, there are so many genres to the “core kid” aesthetic, but despite having different takes it all kinda meets together in the middle, ultimately rock itself is for the outcasts, so I think that’s the thing we all have in common, whether we listen to death metal or Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, or Green Day.
I'll say it one more time: If it's metal-leaning metalcore (Miss May I, Phinehas, August Burns Red, Her Last Sight); it's true metal. If it's hardcore-leaning metalcore (Norma Jean, Converge, Jesus Piece, Kublai Khan TX); it's not metal, it's hardcore. If it has that perfect 50-50 balance of metal and hardcore (God Forbid, Unearth, Killswitch Engage, For Today); it could be passed off as true metal. Crossover thrash could also be considered metalcore too.
2:20 Isn't Thrash Metal the original Metalcore? Because Thrash was the combination of Heavy Metal and Hardcore Punk, and Metalcore is *also* the combination of Heavy Metal and Hardcore Punk.
Metal purists have always been stupid to me. There's a lot of good metalcore. I love how much metal has blossomed over the last 20 years. There's a place for all of it. I love metal and love how much it's expanded. So many metal options and so much cool stuff happening. I definitely have preferences, but even though I don't really care for bands like BMTH and Architects too much, I love that bands like them are bringing metal to a larger audience.
Metal purists are the most annoying people I grew up on Thrash, 80s Shred/Neoclassical, and Death Metal. I'm huge into Technical Death Metal. But I still enjoy Metalcore and Deathcore and all the other bastard child subgenres. Wanting a music genre to be "pure" is just fucking stupid, change and innovation is a good thing even if it kills your favorite genre. It was going to get stale anyways, but I think it's fine for overdone genres to die out then come back with a New Wave of it every 20 or 30 years or so.
Metal purists willingly choose to abstain from something they might actually enjoy SIMPLY because of how others may view them. They'll deny it, but they only want things to be "pure" because they want a specific version of the thing they like to remain theirs only. Buncha losers that think what genre you listen to determines whether you're a good person or not lol. I think it's way more interesting to observe how styles change over time, and way less nonsense to judge people based on their moral decisions, and not their music choice.
@@XueYlva More the merrier I say. Expansion of the genre will offer a lot of stuff I don't like but give fertile soil to a lot of stuff I do like. An example of your last sentence is how even nu metal has made a come back in the last few years. And I support all that. There are venues here in Austin that pretty much only host metal shows and seem to thrive. That's awesome despite what I think of the bands any given night.
I just like music man. I’m not an anything anymore. Rap, Rock, Country, Pop, Metal, and all those genres blended together are great to me. Elitists gonna elite
There is a phrase that I've come to love: "I will never yuck someone's yum." Everyone is allowed to like what they like and we shouldn't be patronizing others for what they enjoy. It doesn't matter the genre, the interest, whatever. Music is meant to be enjoyed, so let people enjoy it. This doesn't just apply to metal, it goes all across the board. Live and let live.
I used to say the same, but actually find video games is where that saying is that saying has made the community worse. the flaws in games never get fixed and we get more games that are absolute trash because someone is enjoying it, let people have fun etc.

I love what your channel has been doing to bring myself and I know many others to learning about many different genres of metal and becoming a metal community! Thanks for all you do and I love the content!
Metalcore is evolution of heavy metal. Lots of bands were experimenting with Core style stuff going into the 90s and then early 00s just transcending to MetalCore. Keep it up Nik 🤘 We got your back! I can throw down from Maiden to Trivium to Cradle of Filthy to Metallica to Knocked Loose so 🖕🫠🖕
I grew up on pop punk and never really got into long guitar solos, and hence not into old school metal. Then I heard my first breakdown and I became a Core Oldie (I have had too many trips around the sun to be able to call myself a kid). I love Knocked Loose because they combine all the things I love into 1 song.
I was at a party once with one of my friends and some Metalheads i didn't know, while drinking, smoking and having a blast we all started to suggest songs (our favourite atm). It was almost exlusively Black and/or Death.... but when it was my turn, i suggested "Northlane - Quantum Flux".... aaaand boy did i get some nasty negative comments about that. They turned it off and started blasting some of their songs again instead.

I have come full-circle and am completely unashamed to be a corekid. I love metal of all kinds, but I can't deny that 90% of my early metal influences were all core bands. Nothing wrong with having a wide variety of musical interests. I see gatekeepers as people who are deeply unhappy with themselves. Metal music will always be my first love, core or not.
I've rediscovered my love for heavy music based on Nik's channel alone, and well shoutout to Spoopifoo for making all of this new heavy music accessible. Said it here many, many times but cannot overstate how important this page and the people on it has gotten me into bands I'd never have thought to listen to, much less known about, 5 years ago. Keep it up mans and stay safe in FL we can't lose an OG like Nik. You can always move to Texas, it's like Florida but better lol.
Idk what kinda kid I am... My favorite bands are With Passion, Dead Blue Sky, Conducting from the Grave, Enfold Darkness, and Arsis... So I'm like a "Core influenced Blackened Melodeath Kid"?
I don't even like most metal core, but I love your channel and watch every video. Let people just listen to what they like and leave them alone. Who cares what kind of music someone else is into. Just enjoy what you want and let others do the same.
I've always been confused by Metalheads saying Metalcore isn't Metal when it literally has Metal in the title, it's a fusion of Metal and Hardcore just like other genres of Metal being fusions like Orchestra mixed with Metal makes Symphonic Metal, Pirates + Metal makes Pirate Metal, etc it makes no sense to say it isn't Metal
It's so funny because I've always associated "Metalcore" with bands that came out of Solid State Records in the 2000's (Living Sacrifice, Society's Finest, etc), which they were actually called LOL! But once I experienced Modern Metalcore, I totally loved and appreciated what it was bringing to the table. Thanks for all the positive vibes and open mind to all things metal. Metal is and should always be an inclusive genre. My favorite bands combined all styles of metal for a reason.
If it wasn’t for your reactions I may never have found Lorna which turned out to be one of my all time favourites. In a difficult time for me metalcore was the main thing keeping me sane. Much love man, thx for the FUN… METAAAAL… THIIIINNNGS!!!!!🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
I am old (in my 40s) and grew up listening to pretty much everything (yes, before Linkin Park -- I listened to rap, and country, and rock, and metal, and jazz, and doowop, and R&B, and and and), but was present for the original goth girl and scene girl stuff. I distinctly recall scene girls throwing hands over the argument that their bands were not metal, or not alt rock, or not whatever they wanted it to be. I've stopped worrying about what other people think about my music choices. I'll happily listen to Japanese pop-rock or pop-metal if it bangs, even if the kids are confused as hell. If you don't like what I'm listening to, wait five minutes, and maybe you'll like it then.
Just as a sidenote, the original goth stuff = late 70s/early 80s. I guess you might have been present in the sense of alive, but hardly old enough to be aware of it. 🙂
as someone who got into metal just as deathcore was really popping off and considered themselves a tradmetal chad, really back in the 2010's there was so many deathcore bands which really were generic breakdown slop, same with metal core. The hardcore, power-violence, and beatdown music that scene kids like nowadays really is a lot better than the deathcore was back last decade so I think the enmity between scene kids and metalheads has eased a lot, the music really is way better .
I stopped judging people for their music tastes and stopped worrying about what other people thought about mine a few years after I graduated high school and music has been so much more enjoyable since then. I love Limp Bizkit and I'm proud. "I'm just here for fun metal things" is the CORE of being a corekid. I'M HERE FOR THE DJUNTS, PEOPLE.
POSER!!!! Love your channel...lots of good vibes from Brazil! I can't imagine nothing more poser nowadays than black metal...for me it didn't age well to be honest. I consider myself a BM musician in essence, had bands, etc during late 90's till early 2000's. Although I'm still a metalhead, I'm more interested in playing more proggy, acoustic stuff, like late Anathema, Soen, Madrugada, Katatonia...again, congrats on your channel!!!
Just wanted to say, even when I tried looking up how to Deathcore not many coherent videos past 2015 were found until you did that TH-cam short so thank you 🙏
My progression was Korn to Slipknot to Devil Driver to All that Remains from Guitar Hero 2 to As I Lay Dying and Killswitch to spending the last 15-20 years trying to find anything as good as the mid-oughts metalcore
I was having a gradeschool argument on a bus in the 90s with a kid once. He was calling me a poser. The word was new to me, so I retorted - maybe you aren't posing enough. Simpler times.
Nick it would be a better video if you would just play that music and did not say anything just stair at the camera and end a video with that. You do not need to explain anything to children or aged children that can't live without criticizing others on the internet and in real life cant even talk normally. I am biased because I am here for your music not your talk videos to be honest. Keep it up, your are doing a great work on the scene.
The day Nick nocturnal gets into power metal I can truly die a happy man. You got me into core and death metal but power metal is where I started my metal journey and it would be funny seing nicks reaction to alestorm or sabaton
The deepest Grey from all that remains was the first metalcore I really heard. Followed by killswitch of course. Thanks to the public broadcast channel that played heavy music late at night in the early 2000s. Corekid for life!
A funny coincidence that I shared this exact thing with my wife yesterday. She mentioned that she is now discovering romance as a genre and that she was ashamed to read it before. I told her not to worry as the metal I was listening to my whole life was always looked down upon and I never cared about other people opinions and just enjoyed what I love. The same thing happened with the anime community. They embraced the word otaku, which is originally an insult. Then people started calling them weebs and they embraced it as well. We should all just be chill guys and chill girls listening, watching and reading whatever we enjoy am I right?
I love your content Nik. I’m a lot older. Love all kinds of music. Metal definitely my favorite. Death Metal Death core. Always have Metallica going. I will always have a love for Grunge and NIN as well. You are right nothing like a breakdown. 🖤
Core music has its place in Metal as much as other sub genres. This argument of whether or not Metalcore being metal should've died back in the mid 2010s.
I’m a metalhead, and what is most important to me is does the riff/song sound good (which is ofc not the same for everyone), not how technical it is. I love a good breakdown any day of the week. I don’t see the point of calling people posers or saying a band someone else likes sucks just because I don’t like it. Newsflash, people are different and enjoy different things 🤯🤯🤯
Its funny this is said because at my school all of us were corekids. None of us thought of it not being metal. It wanst until after that i found heavier bands. Now I have a playlist that goes from DGD, to ADTR, all the way to Number 12.
So what do I call myself if my top 10 favorite bands are: Opeth Babymetal Linkin Park SOAD A7X Green Day Sabaton Death Megadeth As I Lay Dying In that order^
Opeth is based as hell. But i would say you like pretty much most big genres of metal it seems. Prog, metalcore, nu-metal, whatever the fuck SOAD is, power metal, A7x would be... alt? hard rock? i don't really know, i always found them to be more like alt hard rock than metal, death metal and even more classical heavy metal. I would say "metalhead" is close enough, but also it usually doesn't say much, i would say the most coherent thing in this selection is it's incoherence, so an "i listen to all genres" but for metal, so "high-range metalhead" which makes you sound like you are describing a radio tower, but why not. Also, in-case you haven't given them a chance before, seems you might love Gojira, taking a great deal of inspiration from "Death" (very apparent in their early works) and also having many fans shared between them and Opeth.
@ Haha well yeah it was more of a sarcastic question really! I do consider myself a metalhead, even though I listen to most genres (except newer rap, I don’t understand how you like that shit). But even when I get the urge for pop, I usually just go for the more pop-driven metal stuff like Babymetal, Electric Callboy, Linkin Park etc. And yes I know these bands are kinda ”big bands” but it’s still pretty underground for normal NPCs listening to Drake and Ariana Grande… (except Green Day maybe but that’s more of a nostalgia pick from my childhood). I also do listen smaller bands like Necrophagist and stuff like that but these bands are big for a reason haha:) And yeah I have some Gojira songs on my playlist as well! Silvera was my favorite song at some point and I also really like Flying Whales! The point is that I don’t really see how it matters if core is called metal or not since most people who listens to this kind of music likes both! It’s a lot closer to metal in my opinion than it is to punk (which is what hardcore stems from). Ps. Opeth is peak😍
the guitar playing is out of sync because he is a poser, get it? and totally not a whoopsie, shut up, never talk about it, it's not real, wake up samurai, you've been in a coma for 11 years, what do you remember about the night of November 30th, 2013?
I mostly cover extreme metal, but every time I venture into core stuff a few of the comments call it "not metal". On the one hand, I understand it because of the differing aesthetics, but I mostly find it frustrating. I wrote a defense of core in my monthly column, and it was well received, but I don't think I can convince everyone. Definitely think we should come together though. 🤘🤘
Started with Antichrist Superstar album was the first album I ever purchased, Moved onto some 70's and 80s Heavy Metal (Which I still Listen too) But once I herd Bullet for my Valentine The Poison Album for the first time, I was sold on the Genre and still love it to this day!

Nik, I love how you explained about the branding of your merch. It does make a difference that the term gives someone a sense of being a part of a community regardless of the haters. Not trying to sh*t on other reactors, but COREKID makes sense to me. core kid for life ✊
I straight up love pop. I am immune to any insults by gatekeepers 😂
Hell yeah brother
I'll say it one more time:
If it's metal-leaning metalcore (Miss May I, Phinehas, August Burns Red, Her Last Sight); it's true metal.
You don't listen to metal.
2:20 Isn't Thrash Metal the original Metalcore? Because Thrash was the combination of Heavy Metal and Hardcore Punk, and Metalcore is *also* the combination of Heavy Metal and Hardcore Punk.
thrash's influences are more on the side of motörhead and other british heavy metal bands of the time with some influence from groups like discharge
Metal purists are the most annoying people
I grew up on Thrash, 80s Shred/Neoclassical, and Death Metal.
Is this just a disguised Corekid merch ad?
Welcome into the world of influencers, youtubers and streamers...
This is the classical Glam Metal poser problem of the 80s. The problem is always your age.
As a real metalhead and nerd taste music idc if u a corekid or not idc if metalcore get hated bc the metal community, enjoy what u want man (and i like ur merch man it's cool). Metalhead are stupid sometimes as one of them i'm not elitist, I enjoy metalcore sometimes and Spiritbox, BMTH, Knocked Loose are my fav metalcore bands of all of times, Trivium make me listen metalcore in young age man. I gonna be honest as a metalhead the rabithole of metal is not healthy at all, so stey be a poser I like posers bc they are more nice they metalhead. love u man.
I never gave a damn about genres, if it has good guitar playing i'll like it
Nik I still feel as if you've got to brush up on your Poison The Well chops, from The Opposite of December to Tropic Rot. As a core kid it is your duty to delve deeper into the redheaded stepchild of the foundations of metalcore. Nerdy, A Wish for Wings that Work, My Mirror No Longer Reflects, Pamplemousse, Meeting Again for the First Time.
First two albums only
I was a pure core kid forever and you made me branch out and like bands like knocked loose and thrown just to name 2 of my fav heavier bands
Can a 56 year old guy be a core kid? Core man? Core old dude?
well another guy said CoreGramps. idk if you're a gramps, but that one works if you choose.
maybe CoreDad, or CoreBro...just some ideas lol.
They turned it off and started blasting some of their songs again instead.
just straight disrespect to not give you equal air time. music is weird. everyone knows i love metal. why it makes jaws drop when i put on something favorite of mine. and its opera diana ankudinova can't help falling in love or dimash.
Who cares what u are if u enjoy metal that doesn't mean u have to be traditional not having shower thrash long hair having gorilla . Core always in my heart ❤️
METALCORE IS REAL METAL
I don't think corekids are outsiders. I listen to all sorts of metal music, and metalcore is one of the most beautiful. love it
Breakdowns are love, Breakdowns are life
I was really vibing with that riff at the beginning! Is that from a particular song or just something that he whipped up?
We'll love you no matter what you're posing as.
Finally, a new one from you!
If the vocals don't sound like a frog croaking, it ain't metal!!! /s
what's your take on seahorses
I listen to whatever I like too. Who cares what others think
as someone who got into metal just as deathcore was really popping off and considered themselves a tradmetal chad, really back in the 2010's there was so many deathcore bands which really were generic breakdown slop, same with metal core. The hardcore, power-violence, and beatdown music that scene kids like nowadays really is a lot better than the deathcore was back last decade so I think the enmity between scene kids and metalheads has eased a lot, the music really is way better .
Great video bro, keep rockin 🤘💀🤘 best all time core song ...All That Remains,This Calling
I started listening to more core because of you and Tank 😊 I'm melodic death for life but I've grown quite fond of the corekid life
Just wanted to say, even when I tried looking up how to Deathcore not many coherent videos past 2015 were found until you did that TH-cam short so thank you 🙏
Started with listening punk and nu metal, I kept this on and then I discovered breakdowns and absolutely love them.
I bet that kid was fucking flabbergasted lol
Nick it would be a better video if you would just play that music and did not say anything just stair at the camera and end a video with that. You do not need to explain anything to children or aged children that can't live without criticizing others on the internet and in real life cant even talk normally. I am biased because I am here for your music not your talk videos to be honest. Keep it up, your are doing a great work on the scene.
The intro song hits hard! It's out?
who doesn't like a BREAKDOWN?!?!! Love you! always a core kid. Keep calm and JUNT on
Thanks for the Spotify playlists' maintenance, news, shiz and giggles.
The day Nick nocturnal gets into power metal I can truly die a happy man. You got me into core and death metal but power metal is where I started my metal journey and it would be funny seing nicks reaction to alestorm or sabaton
Can anyone tell me what the intro song is if it is a song
That's a good 10 minutes merch promo))))
Love you my man ❤
I'm very confident letting people know I love the 'core' side of metal, cuz it IS metal and it's cool.
The true posers are the gatekeeping elitists.
E: Much like Chris Barnes :)
Tipically in every musical scene
lol no.
@@7ChaosBlackyou’ve responded to every comment against metal elitists. You must be so insecure. Get a life.
@@kangablue99
Cry more, poseur.
Love you Nick!
The riff from the beginning. Need full song. Send... links. I don't think I can replay the first 15s any longer.
I ain’t no core kid, but breakdowns are awesome regardless😎
I listen to so many different genres. Metal or not. And I will never deny being a CoreKid! 🤘🏻
You can’t be called a poser if you separate Core from Metal entirely, I just embrace core not being Metal. I’m a hardcore fan all day every day
I'd love to vote but am not making a sign in. Lame
Its funny this is said because at my school all of us were corekids. None of us thought of it not being metal. It wanst until after that i found heavier bands. Now I have a playlist that goes from DGD, to ADTR, all the way to Number 12.
I know metalcore is real metal because my entire family makes fun of me for listening to it
Trivium has been one of my favorite bands for 20 years. But I love all the metal so everyone can kick rocks!
So what do I call myself if my top 10 favorite bands are:
Opeth
Babymetal
Linkin Park
SOAD
A7X
Green Day
Sabaton
Death
Megadeth
As I Lay Dying
In that order^
Have you ever heard of a radio station called 105.7 the x? :-) I mean they're probably not going to play Babymetal but the rest sounds about right.
@@randomguy9202I always thought that System of a Down was alternative metal🎉 Metalhead is close enough.
I also do listen smaller bands like Necrophagist and stuff like that but these bands are big for a reason haha:)
And yeah I have some Gojira songs on my playlist as well!
Only teenagers care what they are called. Just listen to whatever you like
the guitar playing is out of sync because he is a poser, get it?
and totally not a whoopsie, shut up, never talk about it, it's not real, wake up samurai, you've been in a coma for 11 years, what do you remember about the night of November 30th, 2013?
POSER! lol this is fun metal things!
