I have been installing 3 rail chains for over 35 years in winter weather. Your demonstration was excellent. And yes, at night, in heavy snow, on a hill, with no shoulder. I have 2 comments. First, the mat is a life saver. When they use salt or calcium chloride to melt snow on freeways the slush is colder than 32 F. If you don't have the mat and lay in the slush, it will get thru your clothes and it is cold. So, use a mat especially in slush. Second, after the chains are installed run a mile or so and then re-check your chains and tighten as needed. I check both inside and outside. Tight chains run nice and less vibration. Just another thought, I don't throw my chains in a bag when I take them off. I have a plastic box without a lid. I put the end of the chains without the link in the box first and then slowly lay in the rest of the chain. The hooks and coupler are on top. This helps when laying them out. I put them in the truck to dry out, thus no lid. I spray a little wd-40 or spray grease on them when I can. This makes them ready for the next time I need them.
Or just buy water proof insolated coveralls. I bought a pair 20 yrs ago for 300 bucks. They are still in good shape. Wore as ran flat bed plus fixing cars, trucks and farm tractors laying in cold slush and mud. Ya they stained with oil but still no rips. Very heavy cloth and i was even homeless and with those coveralls i could sleep on the sidewalk all day in canadian winter. No mat will ever keep you warm and cant move as fast cause constantly moving that mat.
Was gonna say same thing.. lots of common sense and some extra outer work gear for this.. demo was great instructions but again real world is a whole new animal.. including little to no lights

Totally! I have seen a lot of videos that seem totally impractical on a loaded truck on the side of the road in the snow and dark. One of them even said to jack the truck up. I always carry a mat and this is the first time I've seen anyone mention that. I didn't know about the chains getting twisted that was new to me. Maybe I have unknowingly run some twisted , never broke anything though.

Normally I would say don't try to learn from someone wearing shoes but this is by far the best video I've seen. Actually accounted for the truck being hooked to a trailer and very good technique for hanging 3 railers. Been driving for 23 years, chained up hundreds of times and even I learned something. Great job, I wouldn't do anything different
Excellent video! You teach and train so that a first timer would feel good about trying it themselves. And for everyone who said they can do it faster and you’re making it complicated, that’s not what your video is going for ,like a fast time and doing this on the side of the road! I’ve been driving for 28 years and would rather someone like you to train me or follow this video because you show how to eliminate a lot of problems BEFORE you actually put the chains on, and patient. I have a video out on how to safely make lift gate deliveries with top heavy pallets and I tried to make it as fool proof and detailed as possible. It’s the little things that we do that makes doing something like this a success. Thanks for your professionalism
Well done, you are a beast lifting those 3 rails. They're like 80#. One tip to viewers, try to never lay down. I squat, to stay dry...but also to stay safe. If the hook isn't high enough to reach while on your feet, roll forward or back a smidgen. Safer than laying down under a tire! There's no guarantee that rig won't slide due to wind and the crown of the road shoulder.Also I have a headlamp so I can see the in side of the tires as I always chain at night. Frees up your hands.
undoubtably the absolute best detailed demonstration/performance/explanation of how to install and use snow chains. Theory of operation coupled with subject matter expert details on how to and why to position/examine/layout/install/run/remove the snow equipment. The individual that actually designed and engineered the chains could not have added any more. that was Perfect from a Safety perspective as well as a driver Utilization effectiveness perspective. Truly you are doing excellent work. unmatched anywhere.

Excellent instructional video and demonstration. Here in Europe we´re legally required to do a 35 hour course every 5 years on various aspects of professional transport, part of which is the use of snow chains, especially here in Norway where we do actually need them. This demonstration was way better than the instructors on the course. The use of bungie cords to prevent the chain slipping between the wheels if it is too loose or comes off is a great tip. Although I would never lie down behind the wheels to pull the hooks through, we just roll the truck forward or backward on to the chain until both ends are at the same side of the wheel, because if the truck rolls for any reason or you get sideswiped, you´re a goner.
I'm not runnin a big rig, just a 3/4 ton with a plow. I have a set of vbar ladder chains with cams, that I struggle with every time I put them on. This video really open my eyes to what I was doing wrong. Last year I think I even ran them with a twist in them cuz the cam just didn't sit right against the tire, and I couldn't figure out why. Excellent explanation on every aspect of chaining up. THANKS!

the thing i've always loved about these "how to" demonstrations... they're always done in the exact opposite conditions that you'll actually be chaining up in... it will be cold, dark, cold, wet, cold, and usually muddy/slushy... and cold don't get me wrong... an explanation/demonstration is VERY helpful for someone who has never had to use chains the first time i had to chain up, i was solo, never had any practice/experience with chaining and didn't have the right gloves... had to stop multiple times to allow my hands to warm up enough to move them again... some preparation and/or expectation/explanation of what i would be doing would have helped immensely
And don't forget your gonna be all pissed off cause the chain up areas are all full of steering wheel holders who won't chain up, ( ya know the if it's bad enough for chains ya shouldn't be driving type steering wheel holders) and so ya gotta hang your ass out into traffic cause your doing it on the shoulder. I don't mind throwing iron at all once ya figure out what works best for yourself it's a breeze, and the chain buddy or chain hammer are a must love mine had it for years.
All these instructions on dry pavement with no snow are hilarious. I drive over Snoqualmie Pass ( Washington state ) twice a night and trust me it’s never that easy to put them on. I have gotten good at doing it fairly quickly, but When you have snow jammed around the wheels, or you accidentally spin the wheels so the chains fall off, etc etc etc Too funny 😂
As long you have the practice and can visualize this. You can perform it during those moments with just being extra cautious and a lot more effort. You don’t change the techniques and things to look out for.
#1 your 3 railers go on your primary drive axle which is the rear axle. #2 I don't like laying in wet snow. I throw my iron and get everything situated and then pull forward a couple feet. That way you can work unimpeded. #3 tighten your cam locks on the inside first then get them as tight as possible on the outside. If you did it right you do not need bungee cords. #4 stop a couple times in the next ten miles and pull up any slack on the out side and re tighten your cam locks. If you have more than 2-3 links that are flopping around use a bunny cord to secure them other wise you may tear off your quarter fenders. I fit my chains to my tires before I ever need them. For your trailer chain the front axle with a set of singles on the outside tires then back up a couple feet and hook them using the same procedure as before. By backing up you do not have to work between the axles. Everything is right there and easy to get to. To be legal you only have to chain your primary drive axle and one trailer axle. Unless you are heavy and on a lot of snow pack you will never need to chain both drive axles! In the PNW puling 40-20's at 105500# I rarely ever chained both drive axles.
@@Loyalteelogistics Your rear axle is your primary drive axle unless you have a tag axle. If you have a power divider it is always the rear.. A set of singles on both sides of the rear will most of the time and by law that is all you have to do plus one axle on each of your trailers. Back in the day before they checked I would just put one drag chain on my trailers just to keep them straight. If you are in deep hard pack snow I would suggest 3 railers on your rear drives and a set of singles on your front drives. But even at that I have spun out before. Just depends on conditions. If you park on heavy snow pack at night I would suggest having some boards with you to pull up on. Your tires will be warm and will melt into the snow pack. Also do not set your trailer brakes when it is super cold your brake lining with freeze to the drums. Then you will be out there laying under it with a hammer busting them loose.

@@Loyalteelogistics I never set trailer brakes unless I am at the dock or dropping the trailer. And when you park in the snow when you get into position if you don't have boards pull up and back a few times to help flatten out the snow and cool your tires so they don't melt as much snow and make divvets for the tires to set in overnight...
I would be very curious to hear your explanation as to why you somehow have this thought that the rear drive axle of a tandem drive axle set is the primary drive axle ?
Excellent demonstration. If I could give one pointer when you install the triple rail chains if you just hook the very inside rail and the very outside rail first, then roll the wheel 180 degrees (drive the truck ahead or back) it's way easier to get that middle rail hooked up. Obviously you can't do that with single chains, but it sure helps with the triple rails. I always run triple rails on the duals. The only time I will use singles is if it's bad enough roads where I need to chain up the steer axle. Running single rails can get you in a bind real fast. You want diggers on both tires in my opinion.
Well Done instructional video. I drive from Baker City, Oregon to Portland and back 5 days a week. I've chained up 3-4 times a day. I developed a few shortcuts like putting down a little kitty litter when I have to pull forward or back so I don't throw the chains off. I've never got the chains on without driving over them. Usually takes me between 15-30 minutes to chain.
I've never used the kitty litter trick but a driver ahead of me on Santiam this week used it. I've heard older drivers say if they just need a little to keep going they'd pour bleach over the tires to soften the rubber. Food for thought.
Laying on the ground in front of behind or in between the tires before you pull the truck up onto the chains can easily get your ass run over or penned under the tires in an ice storm. A gust of wind can easily slide the truck on ice especially if the ground has any slope to it. I hang the chains then pull up onto the first cross chains then connect the chains. I have seen one driver penned down by his coat under a truck that slid and one killed by a trailer rolling onto his chest when the truck slid on the ice !!! It s rare but has happened !!!
I started to watch this but just couldn't finish it. Cam lock side rail chains and rubber straps are for people who don't know how to properly install tire chains. I grew up on a sidehill farm in Wi. back in the sixties. We did not have a 4x4, we had tire chains and there was no such thing as rubber straps on our farm. That was my introductory education on tire chains. Then came eighteen years of hauling log out of the woods where we used tire chains year round as weather and terrain dictated. Boring through deep mud, tree roots, and rocky banks would have made rubber straps useless. Once the skill is mastered, four double chains can be put on to stay in under five minutes. I do like the way you demonstrated how to unravel a twisted chain...perfect!
Great video and some very good info in the comments as well from experienced drivers. I can see how hard this could be in the cold and dark with bad weather.
This is an excellent video, but coming from New England, I can tell you, using using roller grip chains , Made by St. Pierre Chain, make things so much easier. No tools are needed to replace broken cross links, there are no cam locks to wrestle with, and one does not have to worry about the hooks on the cross chains digging into the tires.
A 3 foot length of a 2”x6” board with 2”x4” nailed on to the 2x6 to separate the cross rails . Drive wheel onto the board and lift chains to the top of the wheel . The old White Freightliner COE came with a cab jack handle with a welded on cam tool that worked well . Cut an old pickup truck bed liner with a Skill saw , makes a nice waterproof pad to kneel on and will roll up .
I PUT CHAINS ON FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME FEW YEARS AGO AT DONNER PASS WITH ZERO TRAINING AND DID ONE DRIVE AXLE AND ONE TRAILER AXLE IN UNDER ONE HOUR. NOT SURE IF THAT IS A GOOD TIME. MINE WERE IN A BUCKET WITH A 4 PICTURE DESCRIPTION WHICH MADE IT SIMPLE AND EASY TO UNDERSTAND. NEVER INSTALLED DOUBLES SO FAR ONLY SINGLES. @@bmdbigfeet1031 Two sets of triples? U mean two sets of doubles. All depends on the weather and where one puts them on . 5 to 6 minutes, i don't thinks so. I'd like to see that before i believe it. When i put them on years back that was the very forst time for me. We only use singles. For one drive and one trailer axle i think 90 minutes for 4 chains for the very first time in that bad weather condition was not too bad . And it is not about speed but more about to do it the right way and precision. Have seen lots of guys who don't tighten them properly.
@@tomh9807 nope, triples and I've done it more than once. I've mentioned in other comments that log trucks are way easier to chain than highway trucks. Not saying I wasn't panting when I was done. Right now we're throwing on 2 sets of triples twice a day. Taking my time, 10 to 12 minutes. Guess the only way you're gonna find out is to come to British Columbia and see how it's done. Chains for loggers is just a minor inconvenience and part of the job.
A couple take aways. For untangling of a chain this is very helpful. Nothing worse than having to untangle at night. And second if you have floor mats in your cab you can always used those to throw down on the road. 3rd, always store your chains so that you can take them off your hanger and put them right on the tires. Hooks facing out, cams down. You can literally take them off the hanger, quick inspect, throw, roll on, hook, tighten, and roll out. Cuts a lot of time off to set yourself up.
Can't shut down winter up in Canada, though. Mandatory front and rear winter tires as well as chain season from Oct 1 through to April 30 in the mountains.
that looks like a lot of work,In canada we throw the chains over the wheels drive over till we see the hooks dangling at 3/4 tire and then hook up your not lying in the snow
Good video, after all these years it had never dawned on me to flag where the hooks are when dismounting them, more than once, it took a couple of moves of the truck to get it right. Ya, I'm a meat head sometimes. For singles some guys will lay down blocks in front of the inside wheels and pull up on them, making it easier to hook them on the outside tire, I tried this but got tired of messing with all the blocks, plus its just one more thing (or I should say four or eight ) to find room for. But now being retired I'm just glad I don't have to hassle with it all anymore...
I've tried using a fifth wheel puller to hook up, but I find it a lot easier to run over the chain and put the hook in an area where it's easier to hook up
This is one of the best videos on chaining I've ever seen. I would like to add if you're going to be chaining a lot a few times a year get yourself a good pair of reflective waterproof work pants with knee pad insert.. or if you're going to be cheap about it..rain pants and knee pads..saves you destroying your good pants and idc if you 21 and in farm boy shape,kneel down on a rock one time without knee pads.

If you drive in Canada with the mountains in british columbia a trick if you are pulling super b's with the maximum weight in north america allowed and need a full set of triples on all four drive wheels to achieve maximum traction to climb the steep grades, disconnect the trailers from the tractor on a reasonably flat area, and pull forward out from under the trailers. You now have full access to all the tires. Make sure the truck before winter sets in has only quarter fenders as shown in the video. With the trailers now not dripping water or snow and you can access the tires much easier, you can do a full set very quickly. It only takes about 45 seconds to wind down the landing gear and disconnect the air lines and that time is easily made up by being able to lift the chains and access the tires much easier. Never disconnect the trailers if there is ice and a side slope, because the trailer can slide sideways. Had a driver in the vancouver to cache creek canyon ask me to help chain up and I could not help because he had full fenders with only about an 1 inch of clearance and it filled with packed snow, Another time many of us waited for a wrecker to tow a trailer that someone disconnected on a steep side slope and the trailer slid sideways blocking the highway,
The whole video was good with one exception. NEVER get under the truck in the snow and ice, ever. If you are on a grade, and it's icy, that truck can slide. Seen it, had it happen to me. Been in this for over 3 decades. Trust.
I see that there are lots of comments and I don't want to read them all. I do agree, it is an excellent video and dead on with everything. However, it does not matter how many times you have practiced to install chains, once you have to do it, it's an all different ball game. You will find that out. I live in Canada and up here, a lot of tractors have wintertires mounted on at least one axle and that is a totally different thing alltogether. It might even be that the chain that would fit on a summer tire, will turn out too small on a winter tire. It is also a lot harder to adjust forward or backwards if you have to.
With the triple chains, you used the hooks toward the back, and loose chain toward the front of the truck, with the singles you did the opposite, the hooks were toward the front of the truck and loose chain was toward the back. Is there a safer way hooks towards front, or towards back when chaining up to protect them best from coming undone while driving?
The best part of the video was right at the start when she showed the tangled chains. I've seen guys having trouble chaining up and thy say the chains are too short, You stretch them out on the ground take the 3 twists out of them and they fit perfectly.
Great demonstration, although I don't know why you'd ever chain up without rolling onto your chains first. If you're worried about spinning your chains off in a stuck situation, just hook the inner and outer cams and spin them on. Saves a lot of time and fucking around in the cold, dark, snow.
This is an excellent tutorial.but,please use glasses when using bungees.the hooks or broken bungee coming at you can be a career ender if taken to the eyes.keep up the good work informing drivers new and old!
@@georgepristouris4149 they were the too brave going too fast. I drove semi 20 yrs and never stopped unless road closed and never crashed. I just slowed down. But ya also live in the north and bad weather is the norm. If we parked due to bad weather we would stay home 8 months of the year.

Well I tell you one thing I drive I-70 all the time and I take less than 30 min to chain up with double chains in snow and ice your video is good but to complicated process
here is the best chain advice I can give if the road conditions are bad enough to require chains find a safe place to park. but this is a good video if you get caught in a situation where you need to chain up to get to a safe place.
Why aren't the the half moon cambers on the in side after they've been tightened? The bungee cords are supposed to be mounted to the cambers to prevent the cambers from slipping. One set of chains are on upside down. And you need to blow your nose.

the first time i had to chain up, i was solo, never had any practice/experience with chaining and didn't have the right gloves... had to stop multiple times to allow my hands to warm up enough to move them again... some preparation and/or expectation/explanation of what i would be doing would have helped immensely
And don't forget your gonna be all pissed off cause the chain up areas are all full of steering wheel holders who won't chain up, ( ya know the if it's bad enough for chains ya shouldn't be driving type steering wheel holders) and so ya gotta hang your ass out into traffic cause your doing it on the shoulder. I don't mind throwing iron at all once ya figure out what works best for yourself it's a breeze, and the chain buddy or chain hammer are a must love mine had it for years.

I would like to see this done on the side of the interstate in the middle of the night in a foot of snow with an iced up trailer on.
All these instructions on dry pavement with no snow are hilarious. I drive over Snoqualmie Pass ( Washington state ) twice a night and trust me it’s never that easy to put them on. I have gotten good at doing it fairly quickly, but When you have snow jammed around the wheels, or you accidentally spin the wheels so the chains fall off, etc etc etc Too funny 😂
That’s when you are warm at home or sleeping in the sleeper…lol

As long you have the practice and can visualize this. You can perform it during those moments with just being extra cautious and a lot more effort. You don’t change the techniques and things to look out for.

#1 your 3 railers go on your primary drive axle which is the rear axle. #2 I don't like laying in wet snow. I throw my iron and get everything situated and then pull forward a couple feet. That way you can work unimpeded. #3 tighten your cam locks on the inside first then get them as tight as possible on the outside. If you did it right you do not need bungee cords. #4 stop a couple times in the next ten miles and pull up any slack on the out side and re tighten your cam locks. If you have more than 2-3 links that are flopping around use a bunny cord to secure them other wise you may tear off your quarter fenders. I fit my chains to my tires before I ever need them. For your trailer chain the front axle with a set of singles on the outside tires then back up a couple feet and hook them using the same procedure as before. By backing up you do not have to work between the axles. Everything is right there and easy to get to.
To be legal you only have to chain your primary drive axle and one trailer axle. Unless you are heavy and on a lot of snow pack you will never need to chain both drive axles! In the PNW puling 40-20's at 105500# I rarely ever chained both drive axles.

@@Loyalteelogistics Your rear axle is your primary drive axle unless you have a tag axle. If you have a power divider it is always the rear.. A set of singles on both sides of the rear will most of the time and by law that is all you have to do plus one axle on each of your trailers. Back in the day before they checked I would just put one drag chain on my trailers just to keep them straight.
If you are in deep hard pack snow I would suggest 3 railers on your rear drives and a set of singles on your front drives. But even at that I have spun out before. Just depends on conditions. If you park on heavy snow pack at night I would suggest having some boards with you to pull up on. Your tires will be warm and will melt into the snow pack. Also do not set your trailer brakes when it is super cold your brake lining with freeze to the drums. Then you will be out there laying under it with a hammer busting them loose.

@@Loyalteelogistics I never set trailer brakes unless I am at the dock or dropping the trailer. And when you park in the snow when you get into position if you don't have boards pull up and back a few times to help flatten out the snow and cool your tires so they don't melt as much snow and make divvets for the tires to set in overnight...
I would be very curious to hear your explanation as to why you somehow have this thought that the rear drive axle of a tandem drive axle set is the primary drive axle ?
Excellent demonstration. If I could give one pointer when you install the triple rail chains if you just hook the very inside rail and the very outside rail first, then roll the wheel 180 degrees (drive the truck ahead or back) it's way easier to get that middle rail hooked up. Obviously you can't do that with single chains, but it sure helps with the triple rails. I always run triple rails on the duals. The only time I will use singles is if it's bad enough roads where I need to chain up the steer axle. Running single rails can get you in a bind real fast. You want diggers on both tires in my opinion.

Well Done instructional video. I drive from Baker City, Oregon to Portland and back 5 days a week. I've chained up 3-4 times a day. I developed a few shortcuts like putting down a little kitty litter when I have to pull forward or back so I don't throw the chains off. I've never got the chains on without driving over them. Usually takes me between 15-30 minutes to chain.
I've never used the kitty litter trick but a driver ahead of me on Santiam this week used it. I've heard older drivers say if they just need a little to keep going they'd pour bleach over the tires to soften the rubber. Food for thought.

Very impressive. New respect for drivers who have to do this in a snowstorm, in the dark in the cold.
Laying on the ground in front of behind or in between the tires before you pull the truck up onto the chains can easily get your ass run over or penned under the tires in an ice storm. A gust of wind can easily slide the truck on ice especially if the ground has any slope to it. I hang the chains then pull up onto the first cross chains then connect the chains. I have seen one driver penned down by his coat under a truck that slid and one killed by a trailer rolling onto his chest when the truck slid on the ice !!! It s rare but has happened !!!
I started to watch this but just couldn't finish it. Cam lock side rail chains and rubber straps are for people who don't know how to properly install tire chains. I grew up on a sidehill farm in Wi. back in the sixties. We did not have a 4x4, we had tire chains and there was no such thing as rubber straps on our farm. That was my introductory education on tire chains. Then came eighteen years of hauling log out of the woods where we used tire chains year round as weather and terrain dictated. Boring through deep mud, tree roots, and rocky banks would have made rubber straps useless. Once the skill is mastered, four double chains can be put on to stay in under five minutes.
I do like the way you demonstrated how to unravel a twisted chain...perfect!
You don't need bungees for off highway . Bungees help keep the chain tight for higher speed and less damage to the trailer .
Great video and some very good info in the comments as well from experienced drivers. I can see how hard this could be in the cold and dark with bad weather.

This is an excellent video, but coming from New England, I can tell you, using using roller grip chains , Made by St. Pierre Chain, make things so much easier. No tools are needed to replace broken cross links, there are no cam locks to wrestle with, and one does not have to worry about the hooks on the cross chains digging into the tires.

A 3 foot length of a 2”x6” board with 2”x4” nailed on to the 2x6 to separate the cross rails . Drive wheel onto the board and lift chains to the top of the wheel . The old White Freightliner COE came with a cab jack handle with a welded on cam tool that worked well . Cut an old pickup truck bed liner with a Skill saw , makes a nice waterproof pad to kneel on and will roll up .

MINE WERE IN A BUCKET WITH A 4 PICTURE DESCRIPTION WHICH MADE IT SIMPLE AND EASY TO UNDERSTAND. NEVER INSTALLED DOUBLES SO FAR ONLY SINGLES. @@bmdbigfeet1031 Two sets of triples? U mean two sets of doubles. All depends on the weather and where one puts them on . 5 to 6 minutes, i don't thinks so. I'd like to see that before i believe it. When i put them on years back that was the very forst time for me. We only use singles. For one drive and one trailer axle i think 90 minutes for 4 chains for the very first time in that bad weather condition was not too bad . And it is not about speed but more about to do it the right way and precision. Have seen lots of guys who don't tighten them properly.
@@tomh9807 nope, triples and I've done it more than once. I've mentioned in other comments that log trucks are way easier to chain than highway trucks. Not saying I wasn't panting when I was done. Right now we're throwing on 2 sets of triples twice a day. Taking my time, 10 to 12 minutes. Guess the only way you're gonna find out is to come to British Columbia and see how it's done. Chains for loggers is just a minor inconvenience and part of the job.
A couple take aways. For untangling of a chain this is very helpful. Nothing worse than having to untangle at night. And second if you have floor mats in your cab you can always used those to throw down on the road. 3rd, always store your chains so that you can take them off your hanger and put them right on the tires. Hooks facing out, cams down. You can literally take them off the hanger, quick inspect, throw, roll on, hook, tighten, and roll out. Cuts a lot of time off to set yourself up.

Good video, after all these years it had never dawned on me to flag where the hooks are when dismounting them, more than once, it took a couple of moves of the truck to get it right. Ya, I'm a meat head sometimes. For singles some guys will lay down blocks in front of the inside wheels and pull up on them, making it easier to hook them on the outside tire, I tried this but got tired of messing with all the blocks, plus its just one more thing (or I should say four or eight ) to find room for. But now being retired I'm just glad I don't have to hassle with it all anymore...

I've tried using a fifth wheel puller to hook up, but I find it a lot easier to run over the chain and put the hook in an area where it's easier to hook up

I would like to add if you're going to be chaining a lot a few times a year get yourself a good pair of reflective waterproof work pants with knee pad insert.. or if you're going to be cheap about it..rain pants and knee pads..saves you destroying your good pants and idc if you 21 and in farm boy shape,kneel down on a rock one time without knee pads.

If you drive in Canada with the mountains in british columbia a trick if you are pulling super b's with the maximum weight in north america allowed and need a full set of triples on all four drive wheels to achieve maximum traction to climb the steep grades, disconnect the trailers from the tractor on a reasonably flat area, and pull forward out from under the trailers. You now have full access to all the tires. Make sure the truck before winter sets in has only quarter fenders as shown in the video. With the trailers now not dripping water or snow and you can access the tires much easier, you can do a full set very quickly. It only takes about 45 seconds to wind down the landing gear and disconnect the air lines and that time is easily made up by being able to lift the chains and access the tires much easier. Never disconnect the trailers if there is ice and a side slope, because the trailer can slide sideways. Had a driver in the vancouver to cache creek canyon ask me to help chain up and I could not help because he had full fenders with only about an 1 inch of clearance and it filled with packed snow, Another time many of us waited for a wrecker to tow a trailer that someone disconnected on a steep side slope and the trailer slid sideways blocking the highway,
The whole video was good with one exception. NEVER get under the truck in the snow and ice, ever. If you are on a grade, and it's icy, that truck can slide. Seen it, had it happen to me. Been in this for over 3 decades. Trust.

I see that there are lots of comments and I don't want to read them all. I do agree, it is an excellent video and dead on with everything. However, it does not matter how many times you have practiced to install chains, once you have to do it, it's an all different ball game. You will find that out. I live in Canada and up here, a lot of tractors have wintertires mounted on at least one axle and that is a totally different thing alltogether. It might even be that the chain that would fit on a summer tire, will turn out too small on a winter tire. It is also a lot harder to adjust forward or backwards if you have to.
Best tire chain instruction if you need them on the pavement keep them in the bag
Pull the inner up onto a small two by four about 4 inches long and will make the job so much easier

With the triple chains, you used the hooks toward the back, and loose chain toward the front of the truck, with the singles you did the opposite, the hooks were toward the front of the truck and loose chain was toward the back. Is there a safer way hooks towards front, or towards back when chaining up to protect them best from coming undone while driving?

The best part of the video was right at the start when she showed the tangled chains. I've seen guys having trouble chaining up and thy say the chains are too short, You stretch them out on the ground take the 3 twists out of them and they fit perfectly.

Great demonstration, although I don't know why you'd ever chain up without rolling onto your chains first. If you're worried about spinning your chains off in a stuck situation, just hook the inner and outer cams and spin them on. Saves a lot of time and fucking around in the cold, dark, snow.

I use studded singles and use 4x2 to raise tire so I Don’t have to move and there super tight

here is the best chain advice I can give if the road conditions are bad enough to require chains find a safe place to park. but this is a good video if you get caught in a situation where you need to chain up to get to a safe place.

Why aren't the the half moon cambers on the in side after they've been tightened?
The bungee cords are supposed to be mounted to the cambers to prevent the cambers from slipping. One set of chains are on upside down. And you need to blow your nose.
