Not sure on your status at this point but I just rewired my 50 8N, you should do the same. Pull the hood and do it right. I replaced everything from the ignition forward. Runs much smoother now.

I’ve replaced all of it. I have more videos on my channel. Just figuring out the distributor now and it’ll be running.

    1. The engine "has" been apart evidenced by the new paint, and of course the box of worn pistons in the parts stack.
    2. More evidence is that the primary electrical system has been converted to 12 volt versus the original 6 volt system. You should replace virtually every wire regarding the engine compartment and place them in wiring harness conduit (available everywhere).
    3. STOP - STOP - STOP: The most important thing you can do is go directly to Tractor Supply or online and purchase a "PTO overrunning clutch attachment". Your magnificent tractor (and they are) has a "Non-Live" PTO. Meaning that the PTO shaft protruding in the rear is directly connected to the engine crank shaft through the transmission. If you connect an implement (specifically a bush hog) that has the capacity to store energy (spinning heavy blades) when you push in the clutch (you won't remember to release the PTO lever on the right side of the seat) the bush hog will "take over" and generate energy into the engine and drive train, meaning ... when you come to the corner of a field and push in the clutch, the residual energy from the bush hog will push the tractor through the fence before you even think about it. The overrunning clutch is cheap and allows the bush hog to continue turning with no input to the PTO shaft. And "don't" think you can rely on the PTO lever to disengage if a bush hog is in use. The stored energy will make it jam most of the time. A "Flail Mower" won't do this, but even a "finishing mower" will store energy.
    4. When you start taking your magnificent Son (and he is) while operating the tractor, don't let him sit or stand next to the seat. When you go to raise the 3 point hydraulics, he will get caught between the attachment bar and the seat. You absolutely have to configure a belted seat arrangement that cannot be engaged by a moving part.
I have hundreds of hours on my Grandfather's 1949 8N (purchased new) that continues in use today with no overhaul. It stores in my Uncle's pole barn when not in use. They are the most dependable piece of equipment "ever" (including the 2 cylinder John Deere Tricycle) and power an amazing array of implements.

I certainly plan to purchase the overrunning clutch. I plan on running a snowblower attachment and some other basic implements. In my most recent video I replaced the entire electrical system with all new stuff. I just love how basic yet versatile these tractors can be so I’m glad I found one

@@NotYourAverageNurse It will "never" let you down. Even at age 12 (born in 1949) I was cutting alfalfa with a side-bar scissor mower (there's a trick to those) and a medium duty hay baler. It would go all day on 5 gallons of gas.

Your left side tire tread is on “backwards” ….. I think whoever mounted the tires didn’t check if they were directional!

I assume what happened is they needed a spare and that’s what they could find. Hopefully I’ll be getting the right tire soon

We always kept 4 8n tractors on hand, 2 to mow, one to rake and a spare. We generally had to overhaul one of them per year. We put up hay for 3 months each summer 6.5 days a week. I tried to watch but the music was awful and annoying. Good luck with your project.

I’m pretty happy to have one of my own. I know of another id love to have but I can’t justify it.

Man, I am looking at a '49 8n and 3 implements right now. Hoping me and the current owner can come to an agreement on price. They seem to be reliable machines that are capable of doing decent work around the homestead! Good luck with yours...

That’s what brought me to this tractor was their awesome reputation for just being solid and reliable machines. It’s a really good starter tractor for me as I hope to dive into more in the future. I hope you’re able to get yours! Thanks for the comment and the support! Please feel free to share with others who might enjoy any of my content! I subscribed to your channel as well.

Get online and visit/ subscribe to some 8n forums Yesterday’s Tractors and The N Tractor Club are two excellent ones. Lots of good information and parts and MANUALS sources. I am finishing engine rebuild on my ‘49 8n and bought a ‘51 8n in January that will be next. If you are going to use your 8n for mowing, install an overrunning clutch(ORC) on the PTO shaft as the PTO is engine driven and the momentum of the mower will continually push the tractor even with the clutch pushed in if you are not familiar with this characteristic of the 2,8, and 9n tractors.

39=9n,42=2n,48 =8n,you might want to check out 'tractor crank case sludge, vid on you tube from commen sense Carl, also other 8n related vids on the channel, override on the pto is excellent advise ,dubious about a snow blower but I subscribed and will follow

I do need to grab an override pto for sure. As far as the snowblower attachment, I’ve seen plenty of other N series tractors run them without issue, otherwise I would have made a different choice in tractor. For as old as they are, they are very capable.
