Especially being born and growing up in the Detroit area and Barry Sanders being my guy and watching the bad boys fight with Michael Jordan while I secretly rooted for MJ and had all of his posters and shoes, my whole life growing up from the Air Jordan three all the way to the Air Jordan 14…and when I was in 11th grade, it would be the Air Jordan 12 so every grade I was in it was the air Jordan number after. So easy to remember what kind of shoes I had in each school year because it was air Jordans every year. Tenth grade, I didn’t get there on time to get my size and I ended up buying a used pair off of a friend 3-4 mos later which were the Air Jordan 11s concords because they went so fast and they were still one of my favorites.

I lived in Chicago during the late 80s to 93 and saw many bulls games including Magic Lakers vs bulls before Jordan had any rings. They could not beat my Piston bad boys nor could they beat Larry Bird and the Celtics. The bulls team when to my post grad school and got to meet them all but for testing purposes. They all are giants 5"11 felt like a midget and their reflexes on the testing we do were all better than the population norms. Anyway I've seen most the old guys play and My favs in the 80s were Larry Bird (Well I hated him) but Magic, MJ, Isaiah Thomas ( well the entire Piston team for me) Dr J i was a big fan of. Charles Barkley. Bird, MJ and MJ were stand outs that could be on any starting team in history.

Those early 90s eastern playoffs were amazing. I lived on the west coast and catching the nba on nbc at 10-11 am on Saturday or Sunday was the best. That John Tesh beat still the best opening for any basketball shows/games. Steve Snapper Jones, Bill Walton, Magic Johnson, Marv Albert, and Hannah Storm on sidelines. Sure I’m missing a few .. But on his second three-peat I realized how he was basically a basketball god and that he utilized the triangle offense to his best of abilities speaks volumes about how one of a kind he was. If you look at him a bit later, he would push his dribble out further away from his body when he spun and went baseline. When he started doing that he got stripped less often. Stuff like that is how he improved his game.

True...I could name a few weaknesses he had either in college or early in the pros but during his absolute prime (1st 3peat), he had no weaknesses.

If Jordan had to use the fade away jumper on you it was a huge compliment on your defense. MJ would do what ever he wanted to the lesser defenders, but saved the turn around fade for when he needed it.

I only saw the last couple of years of Kareem and Dr J, so I know they were among the greatest, but I would still pick MJ. The way Wilt changed parts of the game was truly astounding - the NBA widened the lane, "banned" dunking for a couple of seasons, let fouls go uncalled on him, just to slow down his scoring and court dominance - but Wilt won so few championships because he had to face Russell and the Celtics (same problem his eventual teammate Jerry West ran into). I will never forget the dignified humanity, wit and wisdom of Bill Russell. I advise all readers here to just watch a couple of his games as a Celtic, see a few of Bill's in depth interviews, and just listen to his basketball knowledge when he did commentary for NBA game broadcasts.

James Worthy, Jordan's teammate at UNC, Mark Jackson and Kenny Anderson - point guards who were little in comparison to the 6'6" Jordan, both didn't play good defense and Tim Legler who was a role player that got little to no real time earlier in his career starting in 1990-91 but then by 1996 won the 3-point shootout and did a good job for himself but he wasn't a guy you relied on to stop anyone defensively.
