Brexit: The immigrants who voted Leave - BBC News

  • Many would assume that those who had migrated to the UK would support others being able to do so and therefore vote Remain. It's not as simple as that. According to polling, two-thirds (67%) of those describing themselves as Asian voted to remain, as did three-quarters (73%) of black voters. Toni who came to the UK in 1979, tells the BBC what motivated him to vote to leave the EU. Meanwhile Takyiwa, who voted to remain, explains why she thinks immigrants who voted like Toni are hypocrites.

    The idea that the reason there aren't enough jobs may sound logical but actual reports state that immigrants don't cost jobs, in fact they tend to create more jobs.
    The reason why there aren't much jobs in Western countries is because of Corporations outsourcing to cheap labor countries like China or the Philippines, not enough foreign investment and not enough incentives for corporations to keep factories in the country itself.
    What the government should do is put restrictions on outsourcing while at the same time passing legislation that would incentivize job growth at home (through business tax breaks and tax cuts for small but growing businesses).

    An immigrant from India has to go through an incredibly lengthy process, have millions of qualifications and sell their grandma just to get a job here, whereas an immigrant from Bulgaria can show up with no qualifications, no money, no job and they have the right to remain. Being an immigrant from outside the EU and voting to leave is in no way hypocritical. If you've had to work hard to get here, why is it fair that someone else gets to full ride to the UK just because of their citizenship? What's hypocritical is that people think this sort of discrimination is fair. Furthermore, brexit was not all about immigration. There are many other issues such as a lack of accountability and the fact that the EU is anti-democratic and incredibly bureaucratic.

      Because Bulgaria is from the same family as Germany, Finland, Sweden and being a part of EU it gives a right for British citizens go and work in more richer EU countries, everyone benefits out of it. India is not in EUrope and will never be, it's a third world's country, that has no tights with Europe, (apart that it was a British Colony). Eastern European countries altogether with North and South were historically were close to each other, EU is a union of all the countries together, it's the same as UK is union of poor welsh, richer english, and scots. That scumbag is selling his goods to the tourists which most likely are from EU or USA he is a low skill worker, and I doubt that he realises that 99 percent of EU citizens who come to UK are with very good education and work experience.

      India is richer than Bulgaria so I'm not sure what you're trying to say. My point is that skilled workers from outside the EU are prevented from coming to the UK when unskilled workers from poor countries in Eastern Europe can come to the UK with no problems. It's an unfair system

    • @stuarth1996
      @stuarth1996 8 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      That immigrant from India that you speak of is the Indian immigrant of today and any other non EU immigrant of today. I doubt this Indian man selling bags has many qualifications, in fact he probably has none. Immigrants who were let in over 20 years ago did not have to be educated and were let in quite easily. That is why it is hypocritical for people like this man to say the things that he is saying. We let in loads of uneducated people from the Indian subcontinent, people who have a totally different culture to ours. Most Europeans have a very similar culture to ours, the whole idea of being in the EU was to emphasize the things we have in common and to be stronger together.

      World isnt static, your culture is going to change, either due to new advancement in technology or through influence by other culture. You dont certainly expect the modern day Egyptians to resemble the culture of ancient day pharaohs do you? You cant really expect the future demographics of the UK to resemble what it was hundreds of years ago. British Isles had been invaded by Germans, Nordic, Romans, And French countless times in the past. If immigrants are changing your culture and demographics, it is natural flow of human history.

    Leave voters aren't against immigration per se. They're against the uncontrolled immigration from other EU countries that got introduced to the members of the European Union without asking their citizens. AND that's only a part of why a lot of Leave voters voted to leave. There's also the democracy aspects, the unaccountability, the moves towards a greater merged European state with the EU , plus the absolute refusal to reform any of these very, very serious and real problems. I sometimes wonder why the remain voters turned a blind eye to any of this.

      Exactly. It's an annoyingly common strategy to strawman your political opponents platform in modern elections. The same thing happened in the 2016 Presidential election. Trump never said he was anti-immigrant, only that he wanted better control of existing immigration so as to better prevent dangerous people from getting into the US. But at least with Trump his inane babbling made it easier to misrepresent his positions. British politicians however seemed perfectly clear in their goals for Brexit. Leave the EU, control immigration, regain sovereignty.

    Isn't this what Eastern Europeans do to non-white immigrants or their descendents? If The BBC can find Indians, British-born Caribbean etcetera who voted to leave The European Union mainly over immigration issues then surely they could've found Poles, Romanians etcetera who think that they should be given preferential treatment in The United Kingdom over former British Commonwealth immigrants because they're white and thus share "European cultural similarity". I mean, when you're a third generation British-Jamaican and Slavs who just got here in 2005 and up still use you as a scapegoat when the question of immigration from Eastern Europe comes up it makes you wonder why being of an immigrant background automatically means you should've voted to remain...

    • @tessy28

    The first guy settled in the UK in 1979 and still doesn't know the difference between the UK and the English flags. "God bless England" he says, so congratulations are in order to England for having him. The eastern European immigrants may be taking jobs, but guess what: second generation eastern Europeans will be fully British in their culture, values and attitudes. They won't be honour-killing their sisters and stuffing them in suitcases for the offense of looking at members of a competing flavour of their religion. They won't be using their rights of freedom of speech to praise despicable ideologies and to threaten the country they are in.

    No matter whether you voted in or out you had a vote. 50's born women had no vote on whether they would consent to the brutal accelaration of the State Pension Age and to make matters worse they were given very little notice by govt of this acceleration. Yet on the 29th of June 2016 thousands of 50's born women from all over the UK, from Scotland, Northern Ireland Wales and England descended on the Houses of Parliament to protest and demonstrate and very little news coverage was forthcoming. Unlike the Brexit protesters today 2/7/2016, who did have a vote, their disappointment seems to be widely covered by the Mainstream Media.
    50's born women were the 1st generation of women to join the work force en masse around the mid 1960's thereby increasing the amount of National Insurance significantly to fund the Welfare State as envisioned by Beveridge. Where would the immigrants be without the British Welfare State so generously funded by 50's born women over many decades and who now have been denied their pensions for up to six years with very little notice and in some cases no notice at all. Yet the BBC and others have ignored their protest and plight for the main part. This is a failure by the mainstream media and certain sections of the government to recognize the stupendous contribution that 50's born women have made to the Welfare State over a period of approximately 50 years and in this ignorance and neglect lies a grave injustice and the sort of discrimination that is frowned upon by the democratic WEST when observed in other regimes both historically and currently.

    The UK immigration policy is very discriminatory towards non-EU migrants. As a commonwealth citizen I voted Leave because of this. Given the gov can only control the non-EU migrant flow, the impact of an uncontrolled migration from EU means more onerous rules will be imposed on non-EU migrants. Also non-EU migrants cannot claim welfare benefits but EU citizens can. A fair immigration policy that treats all migrants EQUALLY is needed. Quality should be prioritised over quantity when resources are finite.

      Miguel Silva actually you’re the one who is dishonest. No where in my post did I imply any of the nonsense of what you thought I said. Perhaps you need to learn to read properly first before you accuse someone of anything. But to correct you, of course an EU citizen can stay indefinitely, that’s the principle of the freedom of movement. I wasn’t aware there was a time limit to that. If so can you tell me what that is. Also, of course EU citizen can claim welfare benefit, whether or not it’s indefinite depends on the conditions and circumstances of that individual. Non EU citizen however can never claim anything, regardless of circumstance, if there is no job they must leave the country. Capiche? :)

    • @miguelsilva9118
      @miguelsilva9118 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, they can't stay indefinitely (or claim benefits) if they don't have a job or the resources to support themselves. They can only do it for three months. See Directive 2004/38/EC, article 7.
      If the UK government is allowing them to do so that's a problem of the UK government, not the EU. EU law is very clear: have a job or the money to support yourself, or a country can throw you out. This excludes students, ofc.

    These are a few ones to name but there are many other perks EU nationals get for simply being in the EU. So i do understand the gentleman's centiments. (still don't agree with Brexit but that is a separate discussion)

    I'm in favor of population physical/lineagical identities, that countries have identities of the people, rather than multiculturalism all over, from all over the world in one country. I love diversity of countries in comparison to other countries, more so than diversity within a country.

    Hypocritical? the man? when he came to UK in 1979, he must have APPLIED FOR A VISA!!!! I believe he comes from Pakistan or India (commonwealth), but EU immigrants do NOT apply for a visa to get into the UK's workmarket stop talking bullshit please!!!
    And that's the point!

    I think there is allot of competition for jobs but that is what the big corporations want so they can keep wage costs low and the maximum wage becomes the minimum wage. The EU and many of the politicians work for the big corporations and not the people who elect them. I doubt things will change.

    People who say "But you're an immigrant" are ignorant. How many years do people have to wait to get a council flat! That is not racism, that is fact. People want a fair slice of the pie, not the crumbs left behind.

      What benefits do Britain's get working in the eu for a currency thats worth fuck all in countries less advanced and less developed than ours? If you want to be british then apply for a visa and stay here after brexit. If you just want to come and work here to convert £'s into €'s for your family back home, fuck off.

      You're missing the point. The UK's population is growing too fast, housing is ludicrously expensive, and C2DE wages are being undercut. The UK needs to introduce immigration controls as a matter of humanitarian emergency. Speaking as an immigrant, I recognise this. Why can't you?

    Net immigration ran at about 50,000 every year until 2004 - when new labour let the Eastern block countries have immediate freedom to move, electing not to have the 7 year phase-in that almost all other EU countries chose to employ - official/legal net immigration has been around 300,000 every year since! Unsustainable numbers putting huge stress on society... yet, to merely point this out? It's racist, xenophobic, bigoted etc... half the net immigration is from the EU, which is not selective (unskilled, low paid workers mostly), this means we have less places for skilled immigrants of the commonwealth (our traditional immigration - historical connection, family connections etc...) the way government and media have demonised/slandered the British public is a shocking scandal in my opinion...
