One of the best ways to learn a new language is to start with the small words and lead the way up to the big words, that's how I learn a new language.

I learned Korean as an adult and I agree that listening was the key. I'd listen and repeat before I understood. That helped me hear the words and the grammar. Then I looked up the words that I couldn't get out of my head and like magic they were mine! Good luck with your Italian. I'm enjoying your content!

That's pretty much what I used to do when I decided to improve my (american) english. I didn't use the verb "learn" because, as you may have heard, here in Italy, theoretically, english is mandatory in school but it's really rare (I'm pretty sure you had a chance to witness it first-hand! Lol) to come across an italian who is able to speak such good english since school can only teach you some basics or fundamentals: too bad that's not even enough to hold an informal conversation! 😁
So I do really appreciate your dedication aimed at reaching your goals like learning italian in this particular case. I know what it means since I went through that as well. By the way, since I'm a movie buff, even though I normally prefer watching old movies, I'd like to recommend one of the best italian movies of the last decade so you will easily find it on any platform: "Perfetti Sconosciuti" aka "Perfect Strangers" (2016). I just hope you haven't seen it yet! haha

Hey Katie! Great tips on a study program and I was happy to see that you are using all of the same TH-cam channels I have been using, starting with Lucrezia being top of the list, and Easy Italian next. I will look at LingQ as that was new to me. I would only suggest that you find a couple of language partners in Italy with whom you can do a language exchange regularly. This is easy with Zoom or some similar tool. They don’t have to be local. Committing to regular, weekly language exchanges with someone who wants to improve English while you practice Italian is invaluable. It has made a huge difference for me.
Hi Jim! Thanks for this! Yes, that's what my iTalki lessons do for me 😊 It would be awesome if I could find friends who were willing to do that with me, too! In the meantime, paying for a language partner on the internet is definitely helping!
@@TheQKatie Hi Katie. Yes, for sure some kind of lessons that you pay for are important, in my experience. I have been taking formal language lessons with other students from a native Italian speaking teacher for about 3 years. But I also have found that having one or more language partners with whom I do the language exchange has really accelerated my learning and my confidence. I currently have 4 different language partners in Italy with whom I do the exchanges every week. I found them via a Facebook group for Italian-English language exchange (Italian - English exchange). It has become a second, and somewhat different type of accountability for me as I prepare something to discuss for each exchange. It should be easier for you to connect with someone, being in the same time zone in Italy. If you have the time, I think it would help you.

Try to talk as much as I can
You have to become fluent in Italian to understand the differences in dialects. To learn a dialect is a monstrous feat, it's like to learn a different language. In Italy we have thousands dialects.

Wait. This all happens before coffee? I was thinking how learning a foreign language while people are wearing masks would be incredibly hard. I always try to learn a least some of a language when I visit another country. I wish I was better at it. I think my goto Italian phrase was "Mi scusi"

I’m in the US and the italian subtitles and italian audio on Netflix don’t match at all so it’s not very helpful for me to learn as i’d like. Anyone has the same problem?
Hi Katie, for perspective, how much Italian did you know before you moved to Italy?
I did two weeks of a course in Rome in 2018 so I could have basic knowledge for when I was researching for the Italy section of my book. So, not much. I brought a translator/friend with me for a lot of that part of the book. My French was way better than my Italian at that time. Now it’s the complete opposite!

The main issue with Italian movies is that they're packed with regional accents (Roman accent mostly, since Rome is the city of cinema here 😑) and dialects! You'd better watch your favorite American movies dubbed in Italian. Dubbing is a thing here!

Ciao Katie, Ho studiato l'italiano fino all'età di 16 anni dopo che la mia famiglia è emigrata in Australia, quindi ho imparato a parlare l'italiano correttamente dai miei giorni di scuola. Dopo essermi sposato e essermi trasferito, avrei parlato l'italiano proprio a chiunque capisse l'italiano, ma mi ci è voluto del tempo per rendermi conto che quando andavo a trovare i miei genitori di tanto in tanto, il mio italiano si converteva di nuovo in dialetto veneziano e di nuovo in italiano vero e proprio dopo le mie visite. Quindi, l'ho usato a mio vantaggio quando ero a Venezia nell'aprile 2019. Ho parlato inglese con mia moglie (sono turisti), cambiato in italiano con gente e commentava quanto bene parlo la lingua (turisti rispettosi). Poi li ha scioccati passando al dialetto veneziano dopo ho detto loro che ero nato lì (lui è uno di noi!). Il numero di acquisti che abbiamo fatto con uno sconto dopo hanno scoperto è stato così delizioso.

I'm italian 🇮🇹, and even tho i've studied english for years in school i'm never been good with it at the time, couse i wasn't really interested in learning it, and i think that's a big part in learning an entire new language, especially if it's compleately different from yours.
Then, after a few years after finishing school, i started watching english TH-cam videos, and even tho i could tell that i liked them, i couldn't understand almost a single word, couse i had already forgotten all i've learned in school. So i decided to learn english on here, by having fun watching videos, not specific ones for english learning, but like the Markiplier's ones, wich is actually the first american youtuber that i started watching.
It wasn't that easy, but not even that hard, after all english is probably one of the easiest languages to learn, definetly easier than italian. I started understanding more and more with time, learning how to read and write actually in the comments section, practicing the speaking part of it with myself, but most importantly i started thinking in english.
It might seems an obvious thing to do, but it's actually something that i've never done before like 5 years ago, i've always used to think in italian, and like tried to translate everything in english on the spot, wich obviously didn't worked couse italian and english are too much different from each other, so the process was too much slow.
So when i tried to think in english for the first time, that's when i've actually started learning it, everything was faster and easier than ever, english wasn't a different difficult language anymore, but just a second one that i was using.
Untill then i've always prefered italian to english, couse it was my mother tongue, but now i like them both the same way, couse they both sounds natural to me now.
Most of the time now i think in english even when it's not necessary, maybe for keeping practicing it, or maybe just couse i really like it, i don't even know.
Just recently, in the last year or so, i've actually started even dreaming in english, something that i never thought would ever happen, but hey, never say never right?
Now i love watching movies, TV series, playing video games, listen to music, reading books, and of course watching TH-cam videos in english, actually most of the content that i consume now is in english.
I love the fact that this language actually gives me the opportunity to talk with people from all around the world every day on here, actually having a lot of really good, polite conversations, wich is something that i thought was definetely more rare.
With time i've also learned that in order to really learn english, you don't need just to think in english, you need to think like an "english" person, or in my case, american person, couse even tho we are similar as people, we are somewhat different in the way we think, if that make sense.
And that is just couse of our cultures, that are very different from each other, so i had to learn to think like i actually was american when i started thinking in english, in order to do it propperly. So now it's like i have two different personas, one english, one italian, they are very similar to each other, but different at the same time if that make sense. But the most important thing, is that i love them both the same way. I don't have a favourite one anymore, and is very quick to switch from one to the other, at least for me, i can do it on the spot.
So anyway, sorry for the long comment, but i felt like this was the right place to explain people how i've learned a compleate different language from mine, couse it might help someone, you never know. If someone told me how to do some of these things before, i would've definetely learned english faster than this, but hey, better late than never, right?
Plus, this might be a long comment, but at least one of the pros of english is that its words are usually shorter than the italian ones, so it's definetely faster to read.
And that is why i love them both, couse they both have different pros and cons.
The only time when i prefer italian is when i'm really angry, couse nothing is like your mother tongue when you need to swear.

What part of Italy are you from? I'm loving it here in Puglia, and I'm also excited to travel around the country and explore, as soon as COVID allows me to do so! That's a major reason why I'm so motivated to learn Italian: I want to speak with the locals anywhere I go in this country!

Do you find that the locals talk more in dialect than Italian? I’m curious to see if it seems like you have to learn two languages to make friends.
The locals definitely talk in dialect with each other quite a bit! Mostly if it's friends or family speaking to each other. I don't think we'll have to learn dialect, but I do think once we make more friends here, we might naturally pick up some of the dialect!
It would help if you talk to yourself in Italian from the get go.

I think in a lot of structural ways it is. I learned french as a student and used it a lot in my travels and I feel like that basic knowledge is helping me pick up italian a lot faster.

Come on, Italian is not that difficult, alphabet is the same, vocabulary is shared at around 50% with English (though a fair bit of "false friends" ) and, last but not least, rules of pronunciation are easy and with very few exceptions. After so many years I still have to check pronunciation for the occasional new word ... I am learning Anglish now, have you ever heard about it Katie ? It's English as if the Battle of Hastings (1066) had never happened ...
