Hi, thanks for what you do. As an Spanish and English speaker, is a little confusing. But, with your videos I understand a lot more. I'll be in Italy in a couple of days, definitely this will be helpful.

Buongiorno Susan e benvenuta! Unfortunately I don't have a dedicated video on those here on TH-cam yet, but they do follow the same rule (soft when followed by e or i, hard in the rest of the cases). Thank you very much for the wonderful explanation. I have a question about the letter g. Sometimes it is pronounced as the letter hard g, for example gionnio, soft g aggio and in some cases it is not pronounced at all, such as luglio or cognata, which is pronounced as the letter y in English. Are there other letters that we must know how to pronounce, for example nuora? Appreciated

That's a really good question, Rez! It will depend, especially with foreign names and words. Nowadays, we tend to pronounce foreign words quite similarly to the original (especially if it's English), so you may find exception to the rule. E.g. we pronounce "chat" as in English, so with a soft c sound instead of what Italian pronunciation rules would require (that spelling itself wouldn't exist in Italian)

Thank you maam very beautifully explained. Just have one doubt In bacio the sound of "i"is not there. Is there any rule when "i" is followed by any other vowel it becomes silent.
No, there's not another rule, "bacio" is an example of what I explain in the video. Many people think that the "i" in "c" is kind of built-in, because when we say the "c" in the alphabet we actually say an "i" sound with it, and that makes people (even Italian kids!) feel confused. But the "i" is NOT built-in in the C, the C is kind of neutral and then pronounced differently depending on what comes next. So when you say "bacio" you do have an "i" sound, which comes from actually saying the "i", not the "c". Hope this clarifies that point!
The "H" is always completely silent in Italian. The only thing it does is that, when following C, G or SC, it makes those sounds hard, as explained in the video. ;)
