I missed my train and needed a ride to the stazione, I went into a local coffee shop and asked in my broken Italian for a taxi.....the lady behind the counter DROVE me to the station. the workers were honestly so nice, I think it helped knowing a little Italian, Italians are most gracious when you make an effort.

My wife is Italian and while I certainly speak Italian, it is worth comparing my time in Italy with the many years I lived in France. My French is extremely good as well as my accent. My Italian is workable but far from perfect. Still, I find it easier to speak with Italians who generally can still understand you, despite mispronounciations, and have no problem mixing English words into the conversation. Contrast this with France, where even a slight mispronounciation can lead to confusion. Italy thrives on tourism and most Italians seem to do their best to be welcoming. Yes, knowing a few phrases helps and ordering a cappucino after dinner is met by a slight inner groan, but they will make it and serve it with a smile. All this said, I enjoy your videos as a way to improve my Italian.
The French are rude, I've heard repeatedly from those who visit the major cities.
@@YogaBlissDance Everyone in a major city is 'rude'. Paris is no different from New York City in that regard.
@@YogaBlissDance Doesn't help that people still pass on this generalization. Sometimes we, the foreigners, are UNWITTINGLY rude from the outset. What is considered the biggest faux pas (to use a French term) Mistake #1 in France, is not greeting someone. Period. Just one example of a cultural difference drilled into very young French children and very much a real thing.
Whether a waiter, policeman or cashier, on entering the store or arriving at the register or the bank counter, if there is no "bonjour" they will think you are rude...and you are...in THEIR culture anyway. And you may be ignored or treated accordingly.
My best friend, who is French, wrote down several French phrases for me for my first visit to France: "Hello, where is the bathroom?", "Good day, which way to the metro please?", "Good morning, I don't speak French; do you speak English?"; etc.
BUT the first word on every line was some form of "Bonjour" ... "Bonsoir" in the evening. NOTE: "Even the do you speak English" was asked in French! Ninety-nine percent of the time they responded in English with "just a little" or even if not they still tried to help or got someone who could.
I had an discussion with a friend who's been here for years who doesn't want to equate her bad experiences at the dentist or drugstore, or café with the fact she refuses to say "bonjour"! She says that , "excuse me" before asking a question or a favor "should be enough". Oh, well.
That said, the French are human and sense if you approach them assuming they are rude, or that they should speak your language...as most people will assume.
And as someone said earlier, yes folks in big cities are often considered rude whether in Paris, Boston, London, or Madrid. All these major cities are in countries with hundreds or thousands of other places to visit. Go to a tourist hub, act like an entitled tourist, and surprise!, be treated as such. Act like someone interested in not insulting people and/or their customs in their own country and be treated very, very well.

I found the same going from France,where they virtually spit in your face for the slightest fault,to Spain,where they're delighted you've made any effort to learn their language and have infinite patience with foreigners. Unless you're in Catalonia.

Hmm low tier hotels have very old portable air conditioners that we generally call "Pinguino" (it's a firm that still builds them). So if your pinguino is jammed you know how to call it 😀
I do not speak Italian, butI have been trying, to learn over the past couple of visits to Italy. It is very difficult to do in the States…I have no access to classes nor anyone to work with. We are now staying here for 6 weeks, and have been here for 2 weeks. I am learning more just from trying to talk to the locals. They are SO KIND and help me and correct me, but nobody has laughed or been derisive at my mistakes. They are a most generous people. The woman that owns an amazing coffee bar here teaches me a new word each morning by writing it down on a Post-It. Today I put together a complete sentence and she gave me 2 candies as a “reward”. 😂😂😂❤❤❤. I only wish I could convince my husband to move here. It is my life’s dream.
You can definitely find an online tutor or classes and connect with other learners via the Internet
I had good luck with the app iTalki, which allows you to book inexpensive sessions live with native speakers to practice.
Absolutely THE BEST for a quick lesson in the Italian basics. I am in Palermo now and after watching the 1st time I used "salve" and "per Cortesia" this morning. Cool!

Same, I don't mind looking like a tourist because I litrerally am a clueless tourist. I know people are worried it makes you a target but there are ways to mitigate the risk. Besides I'm Asian anyway so anywhere I go I default to the stereotypical Asian tourist.

I am Chinese and I lived in Italy for a some years. Suggestions from me for the tourists in Italy would be: 1) fix Apple pay so we can just scan our phone on POS and it's very convenient; In many places we can enter metro or bus without buying tickets at tabacchi but just use our phone. 2) Prepare coins in some other places, not too much cash just coins, since ppl tend to not have much rest to give us. 3) Always convalidate the ticket if we're travelling by regional trains or public buses. if somehow we cannot manage (machine broken, forgotten etc) we can go to the staff inside of the train and with Buongiorno, mi scusi... she will be happy to help us to sign our ticket =D 4) It is normal to ask for "un goccio d'acqua" (a smol amount of water) with our espresso~!
and also coins are good for donating churches if we wish to. they don't have QR codes for donation sadly. =(

Thank you for explaining how to order meals in Italy....it's good to know you don't always have to have all the courses even though I'm sure it's tempting to do so sometimes.
It's the big mistake tourists make, and I don't blame them....the food is normally so wonderful, and you're on vacation so you want to eat as much as possible. But to really do it like the Italians....have the Italian breakfast of a cappuccino or caffe' normale (shot of espresso) and nothing but a little sweet pastry or cookie. Then have your main meal at lunch, here's where you can go all out if you want, but most Italians just do 2 or 3 of the 4 courses. Dinner is smaller, maybe 2 courses, or just pizza with friends. Or even better, do aperitivi and skip dinner....find a good wine bar that serves a nice aperitivo spread, go later around 6 or 7 and that's dinner. Then you can do gelato at 9 or 10 pm after the evening passeggiata. In the tourist cities like Rome, the American style breakfasts at the hotels will kill you for the rest of the day!
Here's a thing you can do if you really want to try more than a dish in a restaurant/pizzeria: if the place it's not very formal and you are with someone else, it's totally fine to order two different things and than "swap" or even share it with the other person (of course ask the other person first! xD) I do it all the time with my husband, especially at the pizzeria (:

Whenever I bring people to Italy I tell this this:
There’s a reason millions of people go certain places and it’s ok to go there too.
You will never ever be confused for a local anywhere in Europe, and that too is ok.
What’s not ok is not doing things you want to regardless of whether others are. Or not experiencing where you are as close to the way locals do as possible.

I was wearing a long khaki colored linen skirt and a black tee shirt the last time I was in Florence, and two different women spoke to me in Italian, both asking directions. I knew mostly what they were asking, but could not really answer effectively in Italian. It was fun though!

If I can make a suggestion... If you take a 15-20 minute train ride north of Bologna to Ferrara, you can see the only castle in Italy with an active moat. I used to live literally directly next to Castello Estense. Ferrara is a cute city and in my opinion, worth a visit if you're in Bologna.
Btw, it's all walkable from the train station. I wouldn't bother with the bus.

About the glass of Prosecco: it's not just the question of quantity, but there's another big difference between the Italians and the foreigners visiting Italy.
I'd say that the main difference is the alcohol consumption alone, per se (foreigners), in comparison with the alcohol consumption while eating something (Italians).
In the lobby of a London theatre, e.g. during the interval at a concert, you may see a good number of people drinking wine (red wine as well, not Prosecco) and eating nothing. You would never see anything like that in Italy: so if do not want to appear a foreigner in Italy, try to drink wine only at the table of a restaurant during a meal, possibly, or, if not during a meal, as a so called "aperitivo", at a time of the day just before a main meal, and accompanied by some savoury bites.
Never have wine by itself (it's also not good for your stomach...).
Well observed but I would make a correction. I live in Portugal and the Portuguese also don't drink wine on its own (unless they are immitating Americans or Brits). I think the same is true in Spain. So it is not that foreigners visiting Italy drink alcohol on its own - it is that Americans and Brits do.

Just came back from a trip to "Firenze" and Bologna. You can not hide your foreigner status from Italians; and don't use perfect/almost perfect pronunciation. I did it once and got fast mumbling like answer and had to ask to repeat but got it in English. We met two rude shop assistants when trying to use Italian. Actually met only two Italians that were extremely happy when I tried to communicate in Italian and had some sort of conversation with them plus met one older shop keeper that had poor English and she was happy that I used some Italian. Otherwise, when we entered in shops we were welcomed more in English than in Italian, many of younger Italian shop assistants are eager to use/practice their English skills or they automatically speak English (?). Next visit I probably use only English.
Just try and keep practising Italian when in Italy! You'll see, you'll become more and more confident over time and Italians will stop switching to English. 😉

I wish I saw this video before I went to Italy twice. For me my Italian disappears when I am nervous. When I was in Padua I was able to communicate what I needed, but I was terrible at the grocery store and at a restaurant. My friends told me I did well, but my next visit in Mestre I was not understood until my friend from Bassano told me to get out of my head and just let it flow. But as far as paying, I did learn late its different everywhere. However note to self Padua didn't really have English at all. It gave me the immersion I wanted, but I still sometimes panic going back with excitement to try again.
@gerardinapanceri4013 honestly I tried not to go with the stereotype mentality. My friends in Italy don't eat out to restaurants much. They all cook at home. So they didn't explain to me before I went how their normal eating schedule is..I only knew some of my italian friends at at 9pm. Sto studiando l'italiano da 9-10 mesi. I miei amici sanno che faccio del mio meglio per non stereotipare. Il mio Italiano è ancora pessimo ma provando.

Dont even try, Italians have a particular and mostly charming way of talking and moving that I dont think can be taught for the occasion, perhaps adopted if living there for many years. Trying to blend in might just have the opposite effect but dont worry about it, just be yourself. Unless that means being rude and disrespectful, then just pretend to be civilized. Thanks for these video's helps me refresh my very basic Italian.

Wow! I loved this video. My mother tongue is Brazilian Portuguese, and by watching this video, it feels like the Italian language is kind of a mix between Spanish and just a little it bit of Portuguese.
I could understand, say...10% of the video. The Italian language syntax is pretty much the same as Brazilian Portuguese.

The best thing about Italy is that it's virtually impossible to get dirty looks if you talk &/or laugh too loudly. 😹
I learn in different ways, you're my favourite, by far.
A widely used app has an obsession with finding snakes, in a cake, in a sandwich, in a boot, it's like a jungle on there.
But, the most bizarre phrase was on the French course;
"Am I a horse?"
Doesn't do well in Paris.

What I will say about nonsense sentences like “ Can my horse come to your party” is that they are memorable and indeed I often make up silly phrases myself as it reinforces structure and also vocabulary so don’t be too scathing.
When I go to Italy, I have never bothered with trying not to look like a tourist, as I basically look like a tourist where I live in America. I don't really look like I fit in anywhere. I wouldn't mind blending in more fashion-wise, but I am most comfortable in jeans and a T-shirt in hot weather - which is what I hope awaits me when I go to Sicily in two weeks. I will definitely be using "per cortesia," and I will struggle not to order cappucino after, say, 1pm (13:00).
it is not "the T-shirt" or "the jeans" , it is how and WHEN wearing them ! Entering a church with half the buns hanging out of the shorts with a ice cream in your hand .....? Entering fine restaurants with flip-flops like being on the beach ? BTW walking around with beer/a Spritz/ a coke can in your hand is not forbidden, but VERY VERY low class....the topic of "to go" I'd conclude with "go home" ! It is not to hide to be a tourist , it is to behave like a guest , not like dominating animal.....

Yes, but your criticism of a certain app may be too harsh. I recommend the excellent "English as She Is Spoke " by José da Fonseca for some common, useful phrases that can easily be translated into Italian. For example: "to craunch the marmoset" which translates as "per sgranocchiare l'uistitì".

Sfortunatamente, come un diabetico, è semplicemente impossibile da mangiare in un ristorante/bar lì senza infrangere il codice alimentare. Ordinare un antipasto in Puglia potrebbe essere sufficiente per una settimana. Solo in Puglia anti non significa prima ma contrario al pasto, nel senso che dopo non riesci più a mangiare niente. Il consiglio è aspettare ad ordinare primo e secondo, prima fatevi portare l'antipasto e poi vedete come butta.

I am Italian, maybe an atypical one. I never eat anything in the morning until noon; so I don't have breakfast, you might say. But instead I have my breakfast in the afternoon and I always order a cappuccino. I never found anyone who was surprised or outraged for this. On the contrary, I'm often finding other people who very normally have their cappuccino in the afternoon here in Northern Italy. Perhaps that "rule" is a habit only in the South and Center..

Aggiungo che se tu dici invece "addio" (che sarebbe il termine corretto per salutare una persona che probabilmente non si rivedrà più) , suona molto molto negativo. Ad esempio, dici addio quando ti lasci male con una ragazza. Oppure se litighiamo con un amico e non vogliamo più rivederlo, diciamo "addio, buona vita". Non utilizzare quindi mai la parola addio per salutare qualcuno, anche se sai che probabilmente non rivedrai più quella persona, a meno che tu non voglia dire che non la VUOI rivedere :)

haha - it's also a nightmare about where to pay in Australia too! Before the meal, usually if eating at a pub and some cafes, and you order at the counter. Table service - usually you pay after the meal, and sometimes they bring the machine to you, or you have to go to the counter. It's hard to know! I usually ask if a place has table service, fortunately that is becoming more common. I often think we look so typically touristy when we are in Europe or North America, because we are the dummies hanging around waiting to order at the counter, when in fact the wait staff will come to our table! :D

...well, you wouldn't do yourself a service. That's perhaps the most ludicrous custom the average (old-school) Italian have. All sharp dressed and judgemental AF, even if their hearts and minds aren't even equally "spotless"....I'm Italian and we chose to migrate somewhere else just to get rid of all these hypocritical BS.

To understand the differences you need to look at what they refet to. Trattoria from the "Trattore" the men who treat food. Osteria from the "Oste" the men who accomodates people (in Osteria a person could have sleep for the night). Ristorante from the "Ristoratore" the men who give refreshment. This differences today are gone, more or less. Maybe you can eat more regionali food in Trattoria/Osteria then in a Ristorante, but it's not a 100% rule.
Storicamente l'osteria serviva solo il vino e il cibo o lo si portava da casa o si comprava altrove, la trattoria e il ristorante sono più o meno la stessa cosa, il primo è solitamente meno costoso, generalmente con cucina locale, più piccolo di un ristorante e con un arredamento più spartano. Ma in realtà oggi sono solo nomi, basti pensare che l'Osteria Francescana di Bottura ha tre stelle Michelin ed è stata eletta più volte il miglior ristorante al mondo.
Ci sono altri tipi di locali, ci sono i rifugi che spesso sono trasformati in ristoranti aperti a tutti, ma che debbono comunque sempre garantire riparo e assistenza agli alpinisti, ci sono le locande che sono locali in cui si mangia e si può dormire, le fraschette, le taverne (che un tempo erano collocate sui percorsi della transumanza del bestiame). Ci sono gli agriturismi che sono in sostanza aziende agricole che servono il cibo e/o danno un posto in cui dormire. Ecc...
A parte i rifugi e gli agriturismi che sono regolati per legge, i primi hanno - ripeto - l'obbligo di garantire riparo, assistenza e ristoro agli alpinisti, i secondi devono autoprodursi quasi tutto ciò che servono, gli altri sono praticamente solo nomi che uno sceglie o per motivi storici (il locale si chiama così da sempre) o per marketing.
