Vicki Lawrence’s rendition is what I grew up on. Look-watching you listening and possibly figuring out this song-like I did back in the day is awesome!! Love it!!!
The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia” was written by Bobby Russell. Despite becoming a big hit, Russell wasn’t a fan of the song, so much so that he refused to record a demo. His wife at the time, Vicki Lawrence, felt differently and decided to record the song. The song bounced around to several artists before Lawrence eventually decided to release it herself. Lawrence brought the song all the way to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1973. McEntire re-recorded the song in 1991 for her album, For My Broken Heart. It found similar success to Lawrence’s version, charting on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs Chart.
According to Wikipedia, 'The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia' is "a Southern Gothic song" written by Bobby Russell and performed in 1972 by his then-wife Vicki Lawrence. Vicki Lawrence btw is the actress that played "mama" in Mama's Family. If you remember that show? Vicki Lawrence was a one hit wonder, but what a hit!
According the lyrics a innocent man was hung for a murderer that he didn't do it, the sister was the actual killer ❤❤❤Vikki Lawrence did the original version of this song (actress Mama's family and the Carol Burnett show)
Reba is my favorite all time female singer. She is a story teller and absolutely amazing. I don’t care that much for country music but she’s on a different level.
If you’re getting into country, Reba is a must Listen. Her whole catalog has a lot of songs that get you in the feels ie. “ What in the world am I gonna do about you” “ One Promise To Late” and later songs like “ Falling Out of Love “ “Still “”I’ll Be”
Vicki Lawrence recorded and released the song in 1973 on her debut album, The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia. The song was written by Bobby Russell, Lawrence's then-husband. Vicki Lawrence also played the character Mama on the Carol Burnett show!
Wait, Mama? As in Mama's Family Mama? Holy hell, I grew up on syndicated Mama's Family episodes and I knew this was a cover but never realized they were the same person. Awesome.
The really messed up part of the song is when he's talking to his best friend in the bar. The best friend says since he's been gone she's been seeing this Enos boy Seth. But don't worry buddy, because to tell the truth, I've been with her myself!! WTH!!! 😲😂
Reba Mc Entire got discovered when she sang the National Anthem at a Rodea even as a young woman. After many setbacks her career is amazing now. To me she is one of the strongest females in Country Music I personally haven't heard a voice as strong since Patsy Cline.
Yes it is a cover, originally sang by Vickie Lawrence but Reba did it justice. This version thiugh is tough for first time with the video dialog covering up half the lyrics. Every Reba song is a banger. One you should check out is one she did with her back up singer Linda Davis. "Does He Love You" Love Reba's little smirk right at the end of the song, and the end of the music video will blow you away.
The scene is set by the opening line, describing a man who has just come home from a vacation only to find out his wife has been cheating on him. The man’s best friend breaks the news that his wife has been hanging out with that “Amos boy, Seth” and that he too has slept with her. From there, the story gets a little more convoluted. The man is determined to get revenge (of the murder persuasion) on his backstabbing friend. He grabs his dad’s old gun and heads over to the house to get his vengeance. Once he gets to the house, though, he finds his friend already dead at the end of a trail of footprints that were “too small for Andy to make.” After the man is arrested and wrongly convicted, the narrator reveals herself to be the man’s sister and the culprit of the murder. She sought revenge by proxy on Andy and her brother’s wife. Talking over the audio makes it difficult to get it clearly somewhat. Great song! Original is great too!
Great summary -- only thing I would add is that the component this format reveals is that the cheating wife was also screwing around with the fiancee of the storyteller...which is something the song lyrics alone never disclose.
@@d.t.r.8036In the video the wife was also sleeping with the Judge. Every time the lyrics says “Judge has blood on his hands” the scene goes to the Judge and the wife.

BP would love for you to do her " Does He Love You" ft Linda Davis. Linda was Reba's backup singer for years and sounds a lot like Reba. Reba is the wife and Linda is the other woman in the song/video. Both women have great voices.

Performance: Lawrence, Russell's then-wife, performed the song in 1972. Cover: Reba McEntire covered the song in 1991.
Another staple I grew up with here in Texas. She comes from a rodeo family out of Oklahoma. She had a lot of songs that were cutting edge for the time per say, covering some previously recorded songs. I don't usually like remakes but didn't know it when I was a kid when majority of her stuff came out and whatever Reba does is gold. It's hard to break down this song without hearing it multiple times first. She has connections to where I live. Her first ex-husband's mom lived in the same area as me a long time ago. In 1991, Reba's band was in a horrible plane crash killing 10 total and 8 members of her band. This song came out the next year. Another nugget, Kelly Clarkson married one of her son's I think from the first marriage. Kelly Clarkson is from Burleson, TX, where I live. We are close to same age but I never actually knew her. I did get to meet Reba's new band members in 93 in Nashville when I got to go on a family trip. Reba wasn't with them then. One last thing, Reba has a sister, Susie McEntire-Eaton, with phenomenal vocals. So there's all that you can look up.
Kelly was actually married to Reba's stepson from her second marriage to Narvel Blackstock, who is the father of Reba's only biological child, Shelby. Reba had no kids from the first marriage, fortunately. What I've gathered about Charlie Battles (husband #1) is that Reba was barely 21 when she married him and he turned out to be quite controlling and unsupportive of her career. He had two sons from his first marriage (which it seems he ended to pursue Reba, she didn't do anything herself to break up that marriage) and then he expected her to be around to tend to the house and watch over his kids when he had them for visitation. And then he told her if she ever wanted kids of her own she'd have to quit singing because he wouldn't be stuck changing diapers while she was out on the road. After that she was married to Narvel for 26 years, who left her after telling her he didn't love her anymore and turns out he was cheating on her with a friend of hers that he turned around and married after they divorced. That woman has been to hell and back in the relationship department but she seems pretty happy these days. May she never have to deal with that kind of heartbreak again.
One of my favourite storytelling videos from Reba is Is There Life Out There. Very powerful message - and awesome song. They even get the incredible Huey Lewis to play her husband. Would love to see your reaction to it.
This is a country song for sure. You will find Reba has a million absolute fantastic songs that are straight up fire. Excellent. You will love this rabbit hole should you choose to go down it!! Bobby Russell I believe wrote this in 1972. His then wife Vicki Lawerance actor comedian was the 1st to sing this before Reba.
Vickie Lawrence was a regular on the Carol Burnett Show, (often thought of as Carol's sister). Went on to play Mama in the show "Mama's Family", which was a spin-off from Burnett's show. She sang this originally. Her husband wrote it. For a totally different vibe from Reba, try "Turn on the Stereo". Cool video and it shows Reba aging like a fine wine.
Vicci Lawrance's husband wrote the song for Cher.. but she thought it was crap, so he had Vicci (Carol Burnette show, Mammas family) do it and it was a huge hit.

Reba McEntire has 24 number one singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. This makes her the second female artist with the most number one hits, after Dolly Parton, who has 25. McEntire also holds the record for the most top 10 hits by a female country artist.
You must go back to the original version by Vicki Lawrence who hit #1 on the Billboard Singles Chart in 1973. Vicki is best known as Mama in the spinoff TV show from the Carol Burnett Show called Mama's Family. It is said that Vicki got the vocal down with one take😮😊!
Fancy and the night the lights went out olin Georgia are my favorite reba songs. But I've listened to reba my whole life and she is my favorite country singer. ❤❤
Those other two you didn't recognize on the Voice were Michael Bublé, a Canadian crooner who's style is old school Frank Sinatra crooning type stuff, and rocker Gwen Stefani, former lead singer of the group No Doubt, and as a solo performer hit number one in the US and Australia in 2009 with Hollaback Girl. She might be a good one to react to. She's unique.
You crack me up. I've seen this video a gazillion times in the first time I saw it. I caught on pretty fast. She's telling a story about when she was younger. Now she's older but I do love your first expressions.
“Sherlock homeboy” had me crackin’ up, imagining some kinda maniacal monocle 🧐! 😆 Comments are correct about it being the remake of Vicki Lawrence. I never realized it growin’ up because I was born in ‘74 and too young to remember the original. I knew she could sing, from her time as a co-comedienne on The Carol Burnett Show, but I never knew she’d recorded anything prior, until much later. I wouldn’t mind a comparison with her original, as I’m not overly familiar with it. She definitely has talent. For Reba, still throwin’ in my 2¢ with “Still.” But so many other great song picks are up in these comments! “She Thinks his Name was John” is also just as moving. Reba has that way about her, to convey a great story musically.
Turn on the Radio is super catchy and the guitar has a nice riff and then at one point there is a great run with it, not really a solo, because she is still singing, but still very nice. It's from 2010 and she is definitely at her best on this song.
There was actually a TV movie based on this song back in the early 80s. They used to make lots of movies based on country songs. It was actually pretty cool. There was "Harper Valley PTA" "Ode to Billy Joe" "Coward of the County"
I remember Vicki Lawrence's 1973 version of the song (written by her then-husband Bobby Russell). I'd never heard Reba's rendition. Thanks for playing it & your comments.
Great song! There was a movie put out about it with Mark Hamil as one of the stars shot in my home town. I don't know if you can find it anywhere though.
Okay so I want to thank you for actually reacting. I just found your videos today and usually these reaction videos you don't see or hear much reaction from the person actually watching them. So first of all that's a great thing You're really are going into this and giving us your take on it as it happens. Then the next thing is that as from what I get from these you actually will go out of what you know and the music you know and you're actually going into country not knowing really what to expect and all and I think that gives more credibility to your reactions and how you take it. I always love when people who don't listen to country first start actually listening and paying attention and seeing what there really is. Whether it's ones like with Reba here or how you've done Ray Stevens Hank Williams Jr Charlie Daniels band you're covering a wide variety to show what music really is. I feel that people don't really give other music genres a try. Now mostly I listen to country but I will listen to a wide variety of other things and I think it's really not the artist or the genre that is the important thing it more is do I like the song. And I thank you for all you're doing, and if I could think of a really good one you should view and react to I don't know because there are a few options. And I say that across a wide variety of music I'm sure you're going to have more country ones. You know what I'll say this though because of how you say you do hip hop and rap and whatnot. Look up House of pain they have a song "jump around". Don't even if you don't do that or do a reaction to it just view it whatever that's okay but I hope you keep up the good work because I like what you're doing here.
Thank you for doing this song! I've been watching the YSL (Young Thug) RICO Trial in Georgia & have tried to get many people to listen to it with NO LUCK! amazing I never realized it may have been based on "Georgia Truth"! There is so much bad prosecution in the YSL RICO case!
Yessssss i just watched the Fancy reaction, liked, subscribed, and said please do this one. I love these. I stumbled on you as a happy accident and im here to stay 👏

For Reba, still throwin’ in my 2¢ with “Still.” But so many other great song picks are up in these comments! “She Thinks his Name was John” is also just as moving. Reba has that way about her, to convey a great story musically.
This is the song that made me a country fan, I was 9 years old and loved how the song told a story…even if it was way above my age.
PB so glad you finally did this, I knew it would get you 😂
Turn on the Radio is super catchy and the guitar has a nice riff and then at one point there is a great run with it, not really a solo, because she is still singing, but still very nice. It's from 2010 and she is definitely at her best on this song.
Another great Reba song is, Is There Life Out There? One of many that kept me going.
More Reba: "Til You Love Me" (my favorite) • "Does He Love You" • "You Lie" • "His Name Was John" • "Is There Life Out There" • "For My Broken Heart"
Another great reaction and this is a classic I'm glad you got to this one
There was actually a TV movie based on this song back in the early 80s.
They used to make lots of movies based on country songs. It was actually pretty cool. There was
"Harper Valley PTA"
"Ode to Billy Joe"
"Coward of the County"
I remember Vicki Lawrence's 1973 version of the song (written by her then-husband Bobby Russell). I'd never heard Reba's rendition. Thanks for playing it & your comments.
LOVE your reaction!! This song has some great twists!!
I didn't even know Reba did a remake of this song. I love Vicky Lawrence singing her song.
yep, good figuring and catching onto the song story
Reba,Reba, Reba. She is fire and Vicki Lawrence version was fire too. This is a story that has been repeated many times.
I've waited for this reaction.
Great song! There was a movie put out about it with Mark Hamil as one of the stars shot in my home town. I don't know if you can find it anywhere though.
I was in high school when I saw the movie.
Been waiting on this one.
ICP stuff right here. Seriously, everyone loves Reba. Legendary for her talent and personality.
Thank you for doing this one!! One of my songs of all time.
YES!! Now please do the "Original Version" of this song by Vickie Lawrence!!
Both are good but the original is what many fans remember best!
THANX!!
Reba doing FANNY is another must-hear.
yup keep going down the Reba rabbit hole!!!
Yessssss i just watched the Fancy reaction, liked, subscribed, and said please do this one. I love these. I stumbled on you as a happy accident and im here to stay 👏
Vicky Lawrence's version is also what I Grew up listening to!😊
best one Vicki
You are right its a country suspense story
Yo, this song is a banger.
My mum's used to play the country station loud when it was cleaning time and I hated it but this song was always a respite.
I liked watching you trying to figure out what was going on and I'm like she's the killer! Reba is hands down the best country singer.
I’ve been waiting on this one!
Reba=GOAT or one of the best. They don't make videos like that anymore. What a shame. ✌
Is there life out there is a great Reba song
Song went through my head very often as a 19 year old bride.
Reba tells stories within her songs. That is what she's about. That's how she does it. She has said that she sometimes wishes she could sing happy songs, but she is drawn to the sad stories. 🎤 🎶🎵 🎹 💋 💔
yes from carol burnett show
