This is one of the best acceptance speeches ever: brief, funny, humble, appreciative of his peers and with a heartfelt dedication to the ones he loves. Just great.
Man, I'm loving these recent winners for the Best Supporting Actor category. Christian Bale, Christopher Plummer, J.K. Simmons, Mahershala Ali, and now Sam Rockwell! So proud!
Not only that, but 7 of the last 9 Supporting Actor winners (including the last 5 in a row, counting Rockwell) are ALL first-time nominees. Interestingly, Sam Rockwell is also the ONLY first-time nominee of the bunch in this ceremony (ALL the other 4 nominees have been nominated at least once before).
@@notsoaveragejoe2039 He had 16 minutes of screen time and he delivered a powerful performance making the absolute most of his character (Unlike Shannon who tried but couldn't quite manage to elevate the material, though I wouldn't blame him, Nocturnal Animal's screenplay it's awful). Also, stay tuned to watch his performance in Green Book. He might blow us all away there.
Oh you are so right! He scared the shit out of me as a kid. I loved this movie when I was young and it took me years to get that psycho crazy image of him out of my head since he left such a big impression on me in this role.
He was pretty good in that movie, but Michael Clarke Duncan was infinitely better than anyone else in the category that year (except maybe Tom Cruise).
Hands down the best shout out I've ever heard. Woody and Willem will definitely get their own gold guy. They consistently do outstanding work. Big fan of both of them.
@@IvanPolyansky but has he got an oscar , he is much better than many actors who have won an oscar , and this year he gave an absolutely flawless performance in the lighthouse , he absolutely deserved an oscar for that but those basterds didn't even gave him a recognition
I definitely think it's too early to determine who will get nominated or win next year, but I do really want Dafoe get an Oscar soon. However, I 100% agree with Rockwell winning this year!
+Kip Walker He’s definitely one of the front runners, along with Bale (Backseat), and Gosling (First Man). Other possibilities are Carrell/ Chalamet (Beautiful Boy), and Lucas Hedges (Boy Erased).
Sam Rockwell... just saw him in the underappreciated "Richard Jewell." He was excellent as always. He brings a lot of internal fire to every performance he gives. Good for him.
@degree7 Yeah, and what have you done with your life that compares to that dead junkie? How many lives have you enriched? How many people have you inspired? How many artistic highs have you reached?
"My Dad called me from the principal's office when I was eight. He looked very solemn. He said something about Grandma. We were on the car. I asked him "What's wong with Grandma??" And he said "Nothing, we're going to the movies"
I still can't believe Allison Janney and Sam Rockwell were never nominated for an Oscar before, I can understand for Allison she never got quality or important roles in films but Sam has given so many fine performances in films especially conviction and moon, it's seriously about time
True. Janney's is even more surprising to me personally especially since her filmography is actually rather impressive, in spite of the fact that she appears more frequently in television. Don't forget that Janney has appeared in moves like THE HELP, JUNO, AMERICAN BEAUTY, and more. All 3 of them were Best Picture nominees, with AMERICAN BEAUTY even being a Best Picture winner. Interesting side note: Allison Janney is the 6th cast member of THE HELP to win an Oscar. The others who've won are Mary Steenburgen, Sissy Spacek (both won Supporting and Lead Actress Oscars respectively in 1980), Octavia Spencer (who won for THE HELP), Viola Davis, and Emma Stone (they won Supporting and Lead Oscars in 2016 respectively). Also, whenever Octavia Spencer was nominated, she either won or was beaten by her fellow THE HELP cast member (she won on her first nomination, lost her second nod to Viola Davis, and lost her third nomination to Allison Janney).
axr714 American Beauty should had been her maiden nomination, her performance as that catatonic woman was breathtaking despite almost nill dialogues and less screen time
Joaquin Phoenix did that at the Golden Globes last year. I speculated it was to divert attention from the award itself so that he could talk about something that mattered to him more..?

I've always liked Sam Rockwell. Frost/Nixon, Green Mile, The Way Way Back, Hitchhiker's Guide (I have not seen Moon yet). So glad he's an oscar nominee/winner

I'm not an Oscar fan, but I love well-done movies. THAT was some serious competition for the award. Any time you beat out Willem Dafoe and Woody Harrelson, not to mention Christopher Plummer, you done good work. And Viola Davis looked stunning in her gown.

Neelabhra Roy I respectfully disagree. Also, as great as JK Simmons was in WHIPLASH, he was third best of the decade for me (after Rockwell and Jared Leto), and I frankly believe Simmons should have at least tied with Ethan Hawke for BOYHOOD that year (Hawke's character evolves over the course of his movie, and his change is presented in a really believable manner). Interesting Side Note: This marks the 5th year in a row (and the 7th in 9 years) where a first-time nominee won the Supporting Actor category.
Wow, you can tell people just love Sam Rockwell, look at the smiles on the faces of his co-stars. I bet he's one of those people who just brings positive energy and light to everything he does.
You can tell that Willem really wanted it, he looks a bit disappointed. Sam definitely deserved it and I’m glad he won, I just hope Willem wins one some day because he is a phenomenal actor as well.
I have such mad, mad appreciation for him saying that he looked up to the actors nominated alongside him. It was true. He was the youngest of that lot, and he's been watching them all his life, and he's been working with them in theatre for years. That nod to Phil Hoffman was heartbreaking. From interviews, it looked like they were very good friends and had the same mentors. They supported and pushed each other to be the best actors, and again, they came from the same generation who idolized all these greats Sam was nominated with.
5) Plummer, 4) Jenkins, 3) Harrelson, 2) Dafoe, 1) Rockwell Excellent field in all honesty, and personally I wouldn't have minded seeing anyone of these men win. Comparing the bumbling Rockwell to the spellbinding and terrifying Simmons? What a joke. :/ Willem Dafoe should have won. He gave the performance of his career in The Florida Project.
+BlueFox94 I respect your opinion, but I honestly feel Rockwell hands down deserved this, not only because of playing a complex character as mentioned by the Emi Grant, but also because his performance was thoroughly convincing (you could feel sympathy for a character such as this, which is very difficult to do).
