I knew his work before that movie, but never paid much attention to him. Since playing Jack Twist he has earned a LIFETIME FAN in me. Wanted him to win more than anyone else.

I have only seen Jake Gyllenhaal and George Clooney but seriously, Clooney's performance in Syriana was quite good while Gyllenhaal's performance was absolutely gorgeous. Jake Gyllenhaal is so underrated. I like George Clooney in interviews, he seems very sympathetic, but I don't think he's a great actor. He mostly does the same roles. I think he just won this because he has lots of friends in the business and because his role in Syriana was not the typical Clooney-role.
Clooney gained weight, had alot of torturous scenes. Transformed. And hes a veteran. Jake was superb and shouldve won but clooney winning is understandable.
Hurt got nominated for 12 minutes of screen-time. Guy had never gone psycho on a movie before until History of Violence, and it unsettled people. They say it was over the top, but he really embodied a disturbed but ruthless man, mirroring Viggo's lead character.
I love Trey Parker and Matt Stone... they are geniuses in not just their own way. Being able to rightfully shit all over Hollywood is the reason why they can touch upon traits that have been brought up since the ancient Greeks.
Jake Gyllenhall deserved this award. He was phenomenal in "Brokeman Mountin" ...especially on the strength of his most famous line I the film....."Ennis, I wish I knew how to quit you."

2 years later, George and Philip Seymour Hoffman (who won Best Actor at this ceremony) were nominated for Oscars again in the opposite categories to the ones they won in here. George for Michael Clayton and Philip for Charlie Wilson's War with neither winning. Oddly enough, both ceremonies were hosted by Jon Stewart.

A bit ironic that he's praising the Academy for being the champion of civil rights on the same night that it snubbed Brokeback Mountain. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, Film Independent, the British Film Institute, the Broadcast Film Critics Association, the London Film Critics Circle, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the International Press Academy all gave it the top honour but the Oscars didn't want the 'gay cowboy movie'. Exactly. The only other award giving body that did not give it the top prize is the SAG awards where they gave it to Crash. So the culprit of Brokeback Mountain losing to Crash are actors which comprises of the majority of the voters.

And if you remember, in the movie, a person could, and was killed if he was found out. It was, however, about two men who loved each other in an intolerant society, at large. It might have won the Oscar, except for that tent scene. So, the academy probably thought they'd escape the ensuing criticism about their choice by voting for the movie that was roundly panned by critics. (It got 2 stars from a NY paper). Even minority moviegoers hated "Crash". An example came from an African American columnist, who raked it over the coals; it was that bad! But it gave white "progressives" a good feeling, to vote for it. Meanwhile, "Brokeback Mountain:" was reported to have won over 90 Best Picture awards, world-wide.

I have only seen Jake Gyllenhaal and George Clooney but seriously, Clooney's performance in Syriana was quite good while Gyllenhaal's performance was absolutely gorgeous. Jake Gyllenhaal is so underrated.
I like George Clooney in interviews, he seems very sympathetic, but I don't think he's a great actor. He mostly does the same roles. I think he just won this because he has lots of friends in the business and because his role in Syriana was not the typical Clooney-role.

And if you remember, in the movie, a person could, and was killed if he was found out. It was, however, about two men who loved each other in an intolerant society, at large. It might have won the Oscar, except for that tent scene. So, the academy probably thought they'd escape the ensuing criticism about their choice by voting for the movie that was roundly panned by critics. (It got 2 stars from a NY paper). Even minority moviegoers hated "Crash". An example came from an African American columnist, who raked it over the coals; it was that bad! But it gave white "progressives" a good feeling, to vote for it. Meanwhile, "Brokeback Mountain:" was reported to have won over 90 Best Picture awards, world-wide.
South Park got it right
