"You can't fight in here! This is the war room!' Dr. Strangelove often appears on "Top 100" lists as it is truly a great film. Kubrick made three fantastic anti-war movies, Strangelove, Paths of Glory, and Full Metal Jacket. I'd classify Strangelove as a dark comedy. If you get a chance to see it, when it comes down to the last scene, catch a glimpse of the "Soviet ambassador," played by Peter Bull, trying mightily to avoid cracking up at Peter Sellers' over the top portrayal of Dr. Strangelove.
One of the most messed up disturbing movies I’ve ever seen was the 2013 movie Old Boy, which at the time I saw it I had no idea it was a remake. The only movie I’ve seen that is more messed up is the original Korean version of Old Boy from 2003.
@@TheDevilinThePaleMoonlight the remake definitely had its moments and deserved a better response than it got, but yeah, nothing tops the original. Especially that corridor fight scene, one of the best action sequences ever filmed!
Tarantino has been notoriously critical of Oliver Stone's adaptation of his script, so I don't think he had much, if any, input in the production of NBK. Personally I love the film and its probably my favorite flick based off a Tarantino script. Oliver Stone went way over the top and fully embraced the bizarre aspects and made it completely original. One of my 4 favorite films.
I love Tarantino (Pulp Fiction and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood are two of my top 10 favourite movies of all time), but he was way off with his criticism of NBK. It was definitely very different to his original vision, but that doesn't make it inherently bad. He said that he walked out of the movie after the I Love Mallory scene, which is one of the best and most creative scenes in the entire film! He also said that he hated Woody Harrelson's performance, which is just ridiculous. He famously declared that nobody who is a fan of his work will like NBK, but I guess I'm living proof of how wrong that statement was lol.
The american version of quarantine is way better than the Spanish version because the cause of the affliction is not stupid in the american version. In the Spanish version the cause is magic/god. Stupid. Ruins the whole movie.
I really liked it but I think it’s the reason that Peter Weller’s career didn’t soar as high as it could have. But good on him for often picking strange roles.
All three of the main actors were great to watch but Jennifer and Rutger were mesmerising especially because of the Big Bad Wolf/Red Riding Hood dynamic. I was angry at first with her ending but it was a strong part of the story. Shocking the first time around. 80s movies didn’t typically do that to an axial love-interest character. Brought the evil and darkness to focus. My bestie always said that Rutger’s character was just a heavily exaggerated Hollywood bad guy but I still think he was meant to be a supernatural evil or at least somewhat so. A monstrous evil.
It's not related to this list, but Tubi has a great crime drama you rarely see, "True Believer" with James Woods and a young Robert Downey Jr. It also has the terrific mini-series adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize winning book "Lonesome Dove", which has a really stacked cast.
Long time watcher, first time commenter. Darren, you’re really good at this and it helps that so far you’ve matched my tastes 100% which is super unusual. But you’d know that. But regardless of tastes you can give the gist of a movie and put some steam and intrigue in to your recommendations with fewer words than anyone I’m aware of👍 I’ll just add that you’re right that Dark Skies isn’t streaming on Prime in Australia with membership but it can be had on Prime in Australia for rent super duper cheap for $2.99AUD (I think that’s something like .000001 of a penny USD😁)
I know they are not on Max, ( not sure where you could find them) but if you are ever just doing a truly F*^Ked up movie list in general, you might add " A boy and his dog" and " Harold and Maude" two of my favorite just plain wrong movies.
I think you're wrong about Natural Born Killers. It came out right around the time of Pulp Fiction, they were competitors and Tarantino really distanced himself. He was not happy with that movie and I'm pretty sure they just used his script.
Yeah, he even requested that his credit be changed from "written by Quentin Tarantino" to "from a story by Quentin Tarantino" because he hated what Stone did with his script (wrongly imo, because NBK is a banger!)
I love when you do list of fugged up movies, I just got through your tubi fugged up list and now I'm going to start this one now..... Your content always rocks 🤘
Tarantino famously said that was the scene that caused him to walk out of the movie, which I will never understand. That scene was absolutely brilliant!
One of the best parts of Natural Born Kilers is the cut scene, a TV interview with classic 80s action studs; The Barbarian Brothers! More Robert Downy Junior, a great setup, and giant meat-boys getting mutilated with chainsaws (but being surprisingly upbeat about it :D)!!
The Hitcher is great but if you haven't seen Dr. Strangelove... OMG you need to right now! Natural Born Killers IS a f'd up, but a satirical black comedy with some nice ultra violence (care of Q) SEE IT!
In my opinion, "Natural Born Killers" is mad overrated. It was just okay. Oliver Stone butchered Quentin Tarantino's original vision so much that Quentin disavowed any association with the film!
Hillarious, the image of the guy riding the missile in Dr. Strangelove just popped in my head yesterday, glad to find out today where the bizarre image came from today.
One that stayed with me long after my watching and I've seen 9/10 on that list was An American Me, Olmos is an underrated actor recognised from the original Blade Runner and made a reappearance in the remake, I am a Charles'Bronson fan among other things, love 70&80s movie nostalgia , movie /TV trivia, glad this channel exists but have seen almost all of these and was hoping for something I haven't heard of, thanks anyways x
Speaking of scrolling for movies to watch on Netflix for an hour, I wish they would put a filter in that you can remove things that you’ve rated since I’ve seen 90% of what I would like to watch. And as a home theater guy I own about every good movie on Blu-ray.
A few very messed up movies I watched are, Hellacious Acres, Helldriver and The Thingy, The Life Of A Teenage Placenta. Try those movies, the last one one will leave you speechless.
Rec has been dubbed in English (so no reading). The original has 3 additional entries. My favorite is Rec 3. They are all dubbed in English. There's also a Quarantine 2 that takes place in an airport after an infected rat escapes from the luggage being carried by the dude who set shit up. It's not great horror, but it is an enjoyable movie. Also Rec is way more enjoyable and scarier that quarantine. They delve a little more in root of the virus which is not an actual disease its actually...can't spoil it.
Not heard anyone mention Man Bites Dog for years, I watched it early 2000's as a student. It was so dark and bleak whenever we mentioned a dark or bleak movie we'd always say but not as dark as Man Bites Dog. Or we'd ask the question is it as bleak as MBD and we'd always answer straight away nothing is bleaker than MBD. The scene with the old lady in her house got to be the darkest if I remember correctly.
My adult son and I still argue over movies. While he liked It Comes at Night, I say nothing came at night nor during the day . We both really like Machete and Natural Born Killers but I couldn't finish Martyrs, I also don't watch the Saw or Hostel series. I admit to Hell Raiser and Hell Raiser 2 being a favorite rewatch for me but torture porn is not my cup of tea.
I love Dr Strangelove. The worst movie that is worth fotgetting is Everything Everywhere at Once, biggest piece of shite, the whole movie should have been left on the cutting room floor.
One good reason to watch these lists - is to find out that I don't want to watch some of these movies ... Saves me the trouble of watching something for 30 minutes only to stop. .
Unsure about being on Max, but if you want a fugged up movie, go watch the Dutch movie "Spoorloos", translated to "The Vanishing". There's a US remake, don't watch that.
Thanks for the reminder about Lawless because I LOVED that movie. Also, I looked up Hillcoat and found out he is working on another film adaptation of a Cormac Mccarthy novel called Blood Meridian. Stoked!
Hey Darren! People! If You've never seen Cabin Fever, do it NOW! Been on the fence with It Comes at Night, thanks for pushing me! Don't remember much from when I watched Machette in 2010 - except the intestines-as-a-rope scene! WOW! Thanks as always!
Ya know, as a critic or reviewer you can use the word masterpiece every now and then. Kubrick, Sellers, Hayden, Scott, Wynn, Pickens…. (Strangelove.) The writers, set designer, cinematographer, graphic designer, the comedians! Quite a package. One of a kind. Thanks for your advice Darren!
As someone that typically hates "old" movies and thinks 90% of the time Stanley Kubrick is a vastly overrated hack, Dr. Strangelove (1964) is an exceptionally fun movie that has held up unexpectedly well over time and brings plenty of laughs as well as social commentary.
Great list. One of my favorite and by far the strangest films is sanche New York. Probably seen it ten times and still learn something new. By far Philip Seymour Hoffman’s best film.. rip
I’d like to add to the list the 2005 French movie 13 Tzameti, directed by Bela Babluani. It’s shot in all Black & White, really dark and crazy, and it may not exactly be a great date night movie, unless your significant other or date is a nihilistic psychopath. It’s not currently streamed anywhere that I know, so you have to dig around to find a DVD for sale online. The dialogue is in French, but the Region 1 edition for the US has English subtitles, which is good. It’s a seriously messed-up classic. Flip side - avoid the 2010 Hollywood remake that Brad Pitt’s production company churned out. Original director Bela Babluani made it, but it’s not the same. Somehow, filling the cast with Hollywood stars and filming in color just sucks the heart and black soul out of the original story. After that, Man Bites Dog is a worthy film that you mentioned but should be on the list. It’s sick, disgusting, perverted and psycho. And it has parts that you laugh at then feel ashamed about. Unless somebody in Hollywood gets some sick, diseased bug up their ass, it will never, ever be remade for American audiences, which is as it should be. Another movie that should’ve at least gotten a word or honorable mention is another Stanley Kubrick film - A Clockwork Orange. It’s filled with violence, disgusting and offensive things, and it was even banned in England for many years because people couldn’t handle it. When I was a kid, I went to a preview in Hollywood before it officially came out, and people in the audience lost their shit. Some even walked out. After the movie, me and some other kids from college had a sit down with a couple of old-school Hollywood industry insiders, and they were totally freaked out. They hated 2001 when it came out a couple years earlier and thought Kubrick was garbage. Clockwork Orange, to them, convinced them that Kubrick was insane and that his career was over. Of course they were wrong on all counts. Stanley Kubrick is a legend, and I don’t think anybody remembers who those old Hollywood farts were.
Rec sounds good. Not seen Hitcher for years and reckon it should hold up. Problem with it for me is I saw it at the midnight flicks at release in central London and the experience will never be matched. Brilliant film. Strangelove is a masterpiece. As is NBK.
Great video, as usual. Wish I was of normal size so I could rock me some St. Nicholas, as well. Had a thought, that I'll toss to commenters and the channel: Are there recent movies that you know you will love, but also know they will "fugg" you up for a bit, and you need to be in the exact right mood? Mine are the recent "All Quiet on the Western Front" and "Infinity Pool". Actually, started dipping my toe into the Infinity Pool, thinking it would be a regular body horror, but the opening cinematography and sound design quickly dispelled that foolish notion.
How does sizing work for your tshirts? Not familiar with unisex sizing, especially difference between xl and 2xl....otherwise would love to buy a coupla t's from ya.
A great list....i always enjoy your recommendations....but....Quarantine pales in comparison to REC (2007). The only plus side, is it is in English, so no subtitles. I believe Quarantine even used footage from REC and spliced it in there...terribly.

The Hitcher is also showing on Tubi.
Hoping to find some of these in Italy.
The original Hitcher messed me up as a kid. I think I was 10 or 11 when I saw it. The tractor trailer scene…
The Hitcher is AWESOME and a must watch! It re-defines finger fries!

Natural Born Killers would be so much better if Tarantino had actually made it.
It’s too simple for him to remake today though
-- So. Are we Sticking with Max movies with this list ?. ..
- if that's the case may I briefly add one, into your list; Under the Silver Lake.
One of the most messed up disturbing movies I’ve ever seen was the 2013 movie Old Boy, which at the time I saw it I had no idea it was a remake.

The original is far better than the remake
@@TheDevilinThePaleMoonlight the remake definitely had its moments and deserved a better response than it got, but yeah, nothing tops the original. Especially that corridor fight scene, one of the best action sequences ever filmed!
It Comes at Night carries the uncertainty right into the characters. How does that guy have a black son?!? They never explain it!!

👍 thanks again!! :)

Naked Lunch was weird af
I really liked it but I think it’s the reason that Peter Weller’s career didn’t soar as high as it could have. But good on him for often picking strange roles.
Dr. Strangelove, at least in my world, it's one of the greatest films of all time... not fugged up at all! 😁
I fell in love with Jennifer Jason Leigh in The Hitcher. The ending really tore me apart. Great movie!
The ending really tore her apart, too

Not to mention the finger food.

Great list a couple I need to check out for sure!
it is very helpful that you list the movies , Thanks for that
OMG, dude! I can't believe you gave away the twist of Dark Skies. Why would you do that?

Holy moly you mentioned Naked Lunch early on. Love that flick!!
"Gentlemen, you can't fight in here, this is the warroom."
from Dr. Strangelove and one of the funniest lines in any movie.

The Hitcher, for me the best thriller of all time.
Such a great flick
True that
Infinitely re-watchable.
Rudger Hauer gave me nightmares in that one.
Agreed.
I love when you do list of fugged up movies, I just got through your tubi fugged up list and now I'm going to start this one now..... Your content always rocks 🤘
The Hitcher is a classic. Definitely one of those movies that holds up over time.
The Rodney Dangerfield scene in "Natural Born Killers" is the cat's pajamas!
Tarantino famously said that was the scene that caused him to walk out of the movie, which I will never understand. That scene was absolutely brilliant!
Natural Born killers is quite the ride with all the actor performances dialled up to 11😉
I love Machete! Danny was great in his role.
"Lawless" and "Machete" are fantastic! "It Comes at Night" is one of those films we wanted to catch when it came out and never got to it. Great list!
It comes at night was fucking stupid the other two were definitely great
[REC] is a great series IMO
One of the best parts of Natural Born Kilers is the cut scene, a TV interview with classic 80s action studs; The Barbarian Brothers! More Robert Downy Junior, a great setup, and giant meat-boys getting mutilated with chainsaws (but being surprisingly upbeat about it :D)!!

Surprised not to see Perdita Durango (1997) on this list. That's one seriously weird and ******d up movie.
I mostly come in the morning
Saw the hitcher once when first released and it has stayed with me ever since. this is one messed up movie.
Hillarious, the image of the guy riding the missile in Dr. Strangelove just popped in my head yesterday, glad to find out today where the bizarre image came from today.
Hey Darren.... . You are spoling the movie for those who haven't seen Dark Skies. You shouldn't be mentioning aliens. Just a heads up.

A few very messed up movies I watched are, Hellacious Acres, Helldriver and The Thingy, The Life Of A Teenage Placenta. Try those movies, the last one one will leave you speechless.

Time to start binging max all of these look interesting, i was in the usaf for 20yrs and they got dr strangelove pretty damn close to real events
“Audition” is glaring omission as far as messed up movies go for a list like this, almost any Miike movie really could make the list.
Not heard anyone mention Man Bites Dog for years, I watched it early 2000's as a student. *Dr Strangelove* depresses me to rock bottom. I can't watch it. I don't see the humor. I'm still shocked we survived the Cold War.
If you like Eli Roth movies, have you seen Clown? Probably my favorite movie with his name attached lol
My favoite f**ked up movie is The cook, the theif, his wife, and her lover. Don't know what service you would find it on, but its worth it.
Brand New Cherry Flavor on Netflix would go well in with these, though it is a series
Ok now I’ll watch it then😁👍
I love Dr Strangelove. The worst movie that is worth fotgetting is Everything Everywhere at Once, biggest piece of shite, the whole movie should have been left on the cutting room floor.
Dr. Strangelove is a classic and I would love to see it again.
I definitely consider The Hitcher a horror movie. Maybe my favorite Hauer performance
Versus (2000)
The most vile, and disturbing and disgusting the horror movie Centipede.😝
One good reason to watch these lists - is to find out that I don't want to watch some of these movies ... Saves me the trouble of watching something for 30 minutes only to stop.
.
Just saw It Comes At Night, badass recommendation, sir.
i like Quarantine a bit more than REC. maybe some bias cuz i saw Quarantine first, but great stuff
Our society is in the gutter
Must we use the F word ALL the time!

GOD not Satan
excelent list. for somereason reminded me of an old school movie called Highway to hell with a young ben stiller
Uh, What, No "Tucker & Dale vs Evil"????
Hi, does anyone know if you can get the T-shits shipped to the Uk?
Thanks
From the picture I thought Ms. 45 was going to be on the list. Oh well.
Love the shirt. I think I found my bday present.
I thought they would all be Disney flicks.
Saltburn is pretty disturbing, good but crazy
Did you see breach? Netflix
Another episode where I have to stop the video and then go watch the movie being suggested.
How much of Quarantine is that shitty unsteady cam action?
I would to see Tarantino remake natural born killers in a series...
I watched this for the thumbnail. Is it relevant at all?
Midnight Meat Train... it's not what it sounds like
Have you seen The Hitcher II: I've Been Waiting
Quarantine was complete shit rec the original is a masterpiece
I would like to see you do a review on Western movies
Streaming services are for suckers, free streams for life.
Cabin fever was awesome… classic 2000’s
Unsure about being on Max, but if you want a fugged up movie, go watch the Dutch movie "Spoorloos", translated to "The Vanishing". There's a US remake, don't watch that.
Thanks for the List and Video 😀
Thanks for the reminder about Lawless because I LOVED that movie. Also, I looked up Hillcoat and found out he is working on another film adaptation of a Cormac Mccarthy novel called Blood Meridian. Stoked!
unpopular opinion: quarantine is better than rec
Natural born killers is a fucking cult classic
Hey Darren! People! If You've never seen Cabin Fever, do it NOW! Been on the fence with It Comes at Night, thanks for pushing me! Don't remember much from when I watched Machette in 2010 - except the intestines-as-a-rope scene! WOW!

I believe Quarantine even used footage from REC and spliced it in there...terribly.
dude thats a nicolis cage T-shirt lol
I LOVE Natural Born Killers, it's a comfort movie for me, don't know what that says about me 😅
