Hello Pentatonix fans!! Thank you so much for all your comments correcting that there is in fact NO instruments used in this recording! It is absolutely astounding that Kevin made all those sounds using his voice. Beatboxers are quite something, huh?! Also, just to touch on a comment I’ve received regarding my listening environment: Do not worry, I am using a pair of matched Yamaha HS7 studio monitors, calibrated with Sonarworks software. As a Sound Engineering student, the listening environment is really really important to me. The stereo image is as perfect as they can be in my home studio setup :) Also, I was unaware that there was a video to support this. I usually don't react to music videos if I don't know their significance. I was originally told to just listen, not watch, so I just listened. I will, in future, watch the music videos. Thank you all, I can’t wait to read your comments!!
There is something so special about their ability, to tell the songs story, allowing us to listen with a new perspective, and hear & feel emotions, we may not have heard from the original artist 💖💖💖 Not only their voices, but their delivery is also their gift! *IMO, no other group, can build up a song, like Pentatonix* They are masters at pulling on our emotions!!! 💗💗💗 *They are individually so talented, however, when put together, it is truly magical* 💗💗💗 Thank you for such a thoughtful reaction 💗💗💗
Welcome to Pentatonix! No instruments in this one. The "drums" are all Kevin Olusula, their beatboxer. He's the black man with the beard. The bassline is mostly Matt Sallee, the other black man. When he took the third verse solo, the baritone (first & fifth verse, blond man Scott Hoying) dropped down to cover the bass. The other two are Kirstin Moldonado and countertenor Mitch Grassi. Scott, Kirstin and Mitch have known each other since chilhood and are generally considered the soloists, while Matt and Kevin are considered the percussion section. All five can and do sing, the latter two just solo less often. There's only been one membership switch in the group's 12 year history... the original bass, Avi Kaplan, left in 2017 and Matt joined. PTX do a LOT of covers but Lso have around 50 original songs. The other two that generally serve as "introductions to Pentatonix" are Hallelujah - which is their most popular video - and the Daft Punk medley - which won them the first of their three Grammys. Together they give a good overview of their range, with Hallelujah being a more traditional ballad type song and Daft Punk as pseudo-EDM dance/pop. FWIW, if you don't want to show videos because of blocking (and Sony is really bad about blocking PTX vids) it's generally okay with fans if you watch the video and just don't put it on screen. You can get a lot of benefit from most of their videos since they tend to clearly show who's doing what. Great reaction!
So glad you have found Pentatonix! Welcome, they are so versatile and have a vast library of music videos. We all look forward to watching more of your reactions to them, can't wait.
Pentatonix has a HUGE catalog of re-imagined and original songs for you to choose from. It's the reason we say you're going down a rabbit hole... very easy to get lost in the music! Listen/watch any live performance to get a real appreciation for what they do.
There are certain songs that Pentatonix does that wearing earphones is required. They add movement to their singing by having the sound pan from one ear to the other. Or will have certain voices in one ear where others are in the other.
Welcome to Pentatonix. Unbelievably there were no instruments in this version. The "drum kit" you were hearing is their fantastic beatboxer Kevin Olusola. They do covers as well as originals. It adds to the experience if you watch the video along with the vocals. The did an unique version of Bohemian Rhapsody that ever Dr. Brian May enjoyed. You will get many comments requesting videos, I'll let them do the requesting.
You might want to check out Pentatonix's cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" with three-quarters of a Billion views. Also, they do a Daft Punk Medley, cover Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," and even do Tschaikovsky's "Dance of the Sugarplum Fairies" just as a start.
Pentatonix They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that. The founding members are:- Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead);
Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhymes with "Thirsty") Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); For a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”. Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease); Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair), true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese). Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on TH-cam, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga′s "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings. Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma. While at USC, Scott joined a USC−based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition. They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi′s performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his TH-cam videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello−Boxing". Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re−arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five−piece group for less that 24 hours! They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on TH-cam), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building. But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an a cappella group could sell records. Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on TH-cam, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live. Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers. But when their cove r of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label. They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best−selling genre), and have had multi−platinum album sales, sold−out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys. Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry. Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) joined them in September 2017. He did only become official when they renewed their RCA contract in February 2018, but he recorded with them in September as a featured artist and went on their Christmas tour as a featured artist, as well. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group. If you think there have been other changes to the line up - look again. This is the ONLY change. Kirstie and Mitch are like chameleons and change looks frequently. After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre. Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. A good watch is "The Recording of Evergreen" where a camera was invited into the studio for the second week of recording/ Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work. Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place. They have Grammy wins for Daft Punk Medley, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and Jolene featuring Dolly Parton. They were nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen, but didn't win. Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. Mid March 2023 Kirstie has announced that she is engaged to Ben Hausdorff, their videographer. No dates YET! They have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame installed in February 2023. They are the only a capella group with a star! They came 3rd in the 2023 Masked Singer performing as "California Rolls" being unmasked in May 23. Things you need to know because if you get these wrong Pentaholics will come after you with pitch forks and torches! Ha Ha!! 1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used autotune as an effect - so they had to. 2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the official video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen. In the 2022 Christmas album, there are some instruments not featured throughout the album. 3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage.
As a Pentaholic, we are aghast and appalled you thought there was a drum kit *smile*. That is the amazing Kevin Olusula. Pentatonix does add instruments on occasion, but you can clearly see them. For instance, Kevin plays the cello - Shallow, Say Something. The original, Disturbed's version and Pentatonix versions basically have different messages. Simon and Garfunkel's was a warning. Disturbed's we are doomed and Pentatonix is more a message of hope. I didn't listen to Disturbed's version until just recently because I love PTX's so much. I found room in me to like both.
One of the things I love about Disturbed's official video of "The Sound of Silence" is the scene at the very end, where the musicians with their rescued instruments are in a boat crossing the river to the side where the people who "hear without listening," etc., are gathered...the implication being that there may be a spark of hope yet, because the musicians will probably disembark on that side and try to open a communication with those people. Unfortunately viewers often miss that scene because it's often covered up by boxes all over the screen showing links to related videos, which is maddening because the scene's so moving!
Subscribed to accompany you on your a cappella journey, with Pentatonix or any of several other amazing groups that will also blow you away. Most a cappella groups nowadays include one or more beatboxers or vocal percussionists.
Oh welcome. We pentaholics welcome you . They are so insanely talented you will be amazed. Watch and react to their videos. 😊. Try their Bohemian Rhapsody. But you must watch the video
I smile when people talk about "the drum kit" which is an entirely vocal production by Kevin Olusola who is their beatboxer as well as a wonderful tenor, who is also a cellist (who has performed with Yo-yo Ma) with a pre-med degree from Yale and is fluent in Mandarin Chinese.
Since you mentioned in the comments that you've done sound engineering, I think you'd enojoy their video of recording their Evergreen album. You might want to watch their version of The prayer first, but I have a feeling you might geek out over the 17 minute behind the scenes video. Also, Mr Kevin "Drumkit" Olusola has a line in their original song going "I'm the human 808" for a reason.....
You thought Kevin was a real drum kit , watch their cover of Bohemian Rhapsody. You mind will be blown. Also Daft Punk, 90’s Dance Medley. Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy , a song with no words, done by a group with no instruments = Grammy Award .
Enjoyed your reaction and analysis. I love seeing others discover this amazing group. Subbed for more PTX. Try Imagine and Can You Feel the Love Tonight!
The drum kits name is Kevin. Singers in order are Scott, Mitch, Matt (bass), and Kirstie. You should listen to Bohemian Rhapsody. Or actually watch the video. You need to watch Imagine. It's excellent. Want to watch their Grammys? Daft Punk, Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy, and Jolene with Dolly Parton. They are the premiere acapella group and you really should check out more of them. Oh, they have only had one member change. The bass. Kirstie and Mitch like to change their looks all the time.
KO is one of the best beatboxers in the business. He also sings and plays multiple instruments, including the cello and is one of the principal song writers of the group..
Welcome to the Pentatonix rabbit hole! Just subbed for more PTX please! 3 Grammys to date. Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. World tours. Sold out concerts. And they absolutely OWN Christmas! New Christmas album dropping later this month. Tons of videos on their YT channel. And lots of solo work on their individual YT channels.
So glad you decided to check Pentatonix out and there are a whole lot of Pentaholics out here who will follow you more often with the more reactions you do of PTX songs. This group really changed the face of " A Cappella". First thing is PLEASE learn their names and parts, we Pentaholics are passionate about this. We do love it when we see new people discovering our kids. So we have in order of video from left to right, Matt bass singer, Kirstie mezzo soprano, Scott baritone/bass, Mitch high tenor, and Kevin beatboxer/ cellist/ tenor. In some of their earlier videos you will see another member, Avi who was the original bass singer of the group but left in 2017. Please check out more of their songs, pick ANYTHING, they have a huge catalogue of stuff. Also do a little research on their background too and don't be surprised if you end up falling in love with this group, they ARE that EPIC. So Some of my favorites are their originals, " Run to You", " Light in the Hallway", and Elvis' "Cant help Falling In Love". These songs are all done with only singing, no instruments, percussions or beatboxing, just all five singing. This really shows just how tight and synchronized and perfectly timed these five people are, and I don't think I've EVER heard any group, past or current, that is this tight. Please check it out and I'm excited to hear what you have to say. Enjoy !!
This is an Acapella group. The tall blond guy is Scott Hoying-Baritone; the girl is Kirsten Maldonado, Mezzo-Soprano; the guy with the hat is Mitch Grassi, Counter-Tenor; the guy in the white jacket is Matt Sallee, Basso-Profundo; and the beatboxer is Kevin Olusola who is a Tenor and a Cellist/Cellist beatboxer. Scott, Kirsten, and Mitch were in high school together in Arlington, TX (between Dallas and Ft. Worth, TX). They went to different colleges and majored in music. They got together for a competition called "Sing-Off" but they required 5 singers. The other two came as referrals. They covered this song 2019, after "Disturbed" who did it 2015. The original, by Simon and Garfunkel 1964, was a warning; Disturbed's version 2015, is anger/rage, PTX is almost like hope.
There are live versions of them singing this that will show you how they do this, on their own. Try Bohemian Rhapsody, Daft Punk, Havana - so many others. They have hundreds of videos here on You Tube.
Pentatonix has covered a pretty wide variety of music from several genres, including pop, EDM, rock, worship music, holiday music, and more. There are a fairly small number of their songs which include limited use of instruments, but the majority (including this one) are pure acapella with all sounds being produced by the performers without aid of any instrument. Multiple of their members sing in pretty much every song they do, and all of their members have prominent solos in at least a few songs. Kevin, the beatboxer, has the fewest vocal solos, simply because he's occupied with providing the percussion most of the time. But he has a beautiful voice and really shines in those few songs where he does have a vocal solo. If you're looking for more Pentatonix to react to, might I suggest their 3 Grammy-winning songs? Those are "Daft Punk", "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy", and "Jolene" (with Dolly Parton). But really, they don't have any bad songs for reactions. And if you want to see some other non-traditional takes on acapella, 2 additional groups worth checking out are Home Free and VoicePlay.
1st to sing was Scott Hoying. Barritone. However, you will find him taking over the bass line when their bass is singing a solo. There is a video of him, alone, singing ALL the parts of a song from soprano to bass. Huge range. 2nd to sing was Mitch Grassi. Contra Tenor. Voice that is smooth as silk. When he hit's those ultra high notes and knocks your socks off....that's when you've been "Mitch slapped". Mitch has changed the most. Early on he was a bit heavier, then slimmed down to his original weight. He looks very different. He also plays with is hair styles & colors, as well as his fashion. 3rd to sing was Matt Sallee. Bass. He joined the group in 2017. I believe this was his first video with them. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong. This is the ONLY change in the group. The other 4 members are original members. (If you'd like to follow their origin story, you can take that journey because it's still all in the youtube sphere. Just ask for the information when & if you're ready for it, & the Pentaholics will fill you in. It's really worth it. Many reactors would agree.) 4th to sing, & the only female, is Kirsten Maldanado. Also known as Kirsty (rhymes with thirsty). Soprano/alto. She loves to play with hair color & wigs. LOVES dogs. Is a new mom to a little girl. 5th member is the amazing Kevin Olusola. Beatboxer extraordinaire. Also plays cello in a few of their videos. Speaks Mandarin fluently and was in the process of becoming a surgeon at Yale when Scott saw a video on youtube of him playing the cello & beatboxing at the same time (Kevin calls that "celloboxing") & knew he'd be a perfect fit for the A'Capella group he was forming. You'll learn the rest of what happened when you watch their origin story. Loved your reaction. Intelligent & honest. Thanks!
You really need to watch their Daft Punk Medley. All their voices, and you will need to watch it a few times to pick up on all the amazing nuances. They won a grammy for it.
PTX has opened the doors of change to acapella and have lead the way for it entering the mainstream of music! They are an amazingly talented group of people ~ Enjoyed watching your discovering them reaction, new sub. Another person recently responded to a reaction to this song by stating " Simon and Garfunkel's original version was a warning, Disturb's was {something like }fear ~ while PTX's was hope. " Reacting to your site title, I just want to say that this old grandma still has {and often plays} all of my 1960 & 70's vinal collection ~ and I think that your voice is beautiful!
Great reaction! I gather you don't watch the video as well as listen, but Pentatonix does make some great videos...not flashy, dancey stuff, but the videos enhance the experience, show who is doing/ singing what, uses visual clues, add to the mood and in at least one case, is integral with adding another dimension to the song. Imagine, John Lennon's wonderful piece is one where the video adds a whole 'nother part of the song...a very important part. You don't have to show the video, but it definitely enhances your experience of the songs to watch while listening. Suggestions: Imagine, When The Party's Over, Hallelujah, The Prayer, 90's Dance Medley, Evolution of Michael Jackson.I Rise (original), Love Again( original), Coffee In Bed (original).
I usually don't watch the videos where possible but I don't really know why! I should have checked out the video, I will in future! It's very remiss of me!
@@alsvinylcollectionThey have some amazing songs without videos, too. Their version of When You Wish Upon A Star is absolutely beautiful. And their performance of Once Upon A December is awesome - the background vocals make you believe you're hearing an actual old organ from the old carnival Merry-go-rounds! 💖
This is new for me, a reactor who prefers the audio over the video. I like it and subscribed. That being said, if you are not showing the video for copyright converts, we don’t mind if you blur or overlay the visuals or just watch it off camera. We have seen these videos dozens of times and we’re here for your reaction. I love being able to celebrate with you as you discover something unexpected and fabulous. Listening to their cover of Bohemian Rhapsody and also their Daft Punk medley (for which they won their first Grammy) will give you an idea of their versatility, and then there’s so much more if you are inclined to explore PTX further. I really enjoyed your reaction, thanks. (Yep, all Kevin, as others have said. He’s a remarkable musician and terrific human being.) Peace from Ohio …
Dude!!! You MUST wear headphones 🎧 or earbuds when listening to PENTATONIX. You won't believe the difference headphones make. It helps you to hear all of their sounds. You can hear the bass line (Matt) much better plus Kevin's beat boxing. It just enhances the sound. Makes it richer and fuller. Great reaction!! Welcome to the world of PTX!!! Hopefully you will react to more and all of us Pentaholics can get our "fixes". I'm sure by now you know that there are no drums or kits being used. Kevin really is that good. He's the dude on the far right. You are correct in saying the Disturbed version captured more of the anger...I agree with you there. Anyways, I would recommend Daft Punk Medley next. This is their first Grammy winning song. Oh...no drums or kits in this one either. Every sound you hear is coming from their throats...nothing else. Take us with you on your PTX journey. Hope you are doing well. Sending you love from Texas!!!
You will find that PTX fans, or Pentaholics, are quite passionate about them. As a fan from their beginning, it is always amazing to find people that have never heard of or from them before. They do all kinds of genres of music, and they do it well. Pick anything, I think you will enjoy it. Christmas is fast approaching, and since they basically own Christmas, you might try that. From traditional, in a way you've never heard, to modern, to original it is all great fun. Enjoy.
If you would like to hear the true talent that they have, and would like to hear some incredible 5 part harmonies, check out the offical video MY HEART WITH YOU. 5 people and a lightbulb. Best harmonies i have ever heard.
I agree with all of the above, especially the headphones use and watching the videos. I find that I usually need to watch their videos at least three times. First, to get the general impression of the song. A second time to focus on the background vocals and the amazing job they do with their arrangements. A third time to focus on Kevin's vocal percussion. (There are a lot of "beatboxers," but Kevin is in a class by himself for his skill and artistic interpretation.) I would add their various Christmas numbers if you like to see creative reinterpretations of songs that you think you know so well.
Their official videos/audio do use some compression, reverb, and very rarely some layering. The live perfomance makes up for it by being more emotional and you get more lovely runs and variation (especially from Scott, the starting singer on this song), but there is plenty of off-mike videos showing they don't relly need pitch correction, instruments, or fancy editing to sound amazing.
One comparison I've heard, and I think it stands up, goes like this: Simon and Garfunkel gave us a warning. Disturbed is angry that we didn't heed the warning. And Pentatonix acknowledges Disturbed's complaint but says that it isn't too late; we still have time to save the planet. Is Pentatonix right about that? I don't know. The only thing I know for certain is that if we just give up, we lose. We lose our planet, and we lose ourselves. And if it really is too late, I'd still rather go down fighting for my planet. So I'm with Pentatonix on this one.
I agree that there is room for more than one interpretation and which I choose depends on my mood - I thought you articulated your ideas well, so thanks! I would love to have you watch their version of “Imagine” - beautifully done and the vocals are amplified by the visuals ❤ Thanks for this - I enjoyed it
Hi, Al! I'm adding my recommendation to those of the other commenters that you watch the video versions of Pentatonix (PTX for short) performances. Whether they're using minimalist settings or elaborate ones, the settings always add meaning, nuance, and expression to their work without distracting from the songs. I've seen some reactors get so carried away by PTX's music that they close their eyes or look off into the distance, but they miss wonderful visuals when they do that! I'm looking forward to seeing more PTX reactions by you; welcome to the fandom!
Pentatonix is my favorite acapella group followed closely by Voiceplay and Home Free in that order. Put "Hallelujah" by Pentatonix and "Valhalla Calling" by Home Free on your "must hear" list and I definitely recommend the videos mostly to familiarize yourself with the artists because I think one of the most important things with acapella is that each artist brings something different to every song. Just like everyone can name the lead guitarist or the drummer in their favorite band, acapella singers each have their own "instrument" and use them in different and frequently amazing ways. If acapella hasn't been your "thing" in the past, get ready for a change. These bands are just astounding. They are the reason there is currently a resurgence in the popularity of this format. Great video, loved your reaction. Looking forward to more.
As a Pentaholic, welcome to our world! We invite you to continue "down the rabbit hole" as it is termed and research this group. As you've noted, they aren't your normal acapella group. Others have pounted you to the biggies, but i would also point you to an older 2013 version of Imagine Dragon's "Radioactive". This is in collaboration with the violinist Lindsay Sterling and with Kevin on cello while beatboxing at the same time. Finally i would point you to a more recent cover of "Amazing Grace". You will be amazed at the musicality of this song. Enjoy. BTW, Pentatonix is the Canadian team in Pitch Perfect 2 movie.
Glad you enjoyed your first experience with Pentatonix! I think you'll be pleased with any other songs of theirs that you listen to! I think the classic Pentatonix video, both from the song they cover, and the videography and presentation, is Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen. It's by far the video with the highest number of views on their channel, and I think for good reason. I would highly recommend giving it a watch. To show you just how different a cappella can sound from what you may be expecting, check out their Daft Punk medley. It really is a departure from "traditional" a cappella, but everything is still done by them, no instruments involved. PS - the lineup you saw in this video is the "new" Pentatonix lineup. I use quotes because there has only been one member change in their existence, when the original bass singer Avi Kaplan left in 2017 and the "new" bass singer Matt Sallee (white jacket) joined in late 2017/ early 2018. Since Matt has been the bass singer for 6 years now, he's not "new", but he'll always have that label simply because he wasn't an original member. All of the other members are original - but Mitch (2nd singer) and Kirstin (4th singer) change their appearance so much that they are often mistaken for new members. If you watch Hallelujah or Daft Punk, you'll see Avi as the bass singer.
Ooooo! A Pentatonix newbie! Your comment that this is something of a blend of S&G and Disturbed is exactly my take on their cover, too. Would love to hear your reactions to more Pentatonix. Others have made some great suggestions. At some point, you will have to check out their cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," a brilliant arrangement featuring what has come to be affectionately known as a "Mitch slap." Excellent reaction! Liked and subbed.
Great reaction, thanks for sharing your time and thoughts. Would love anything you choose, with Pentatonix there are no bad choices. New subscriber here from Ohio,USA. Peace and blessings.✌🤗
They did this live on the Jimmy Kimmel show. Amazing talent. You'll be blown away with their Hallelujah and Daft Punk cover. Enjoy👍👍ps.. They won a Grammy for their Daft Punk medley....
Thank you for the reaction. Bohemian Rhapsody was my first intro to Pentatonix and became a Pentaholic by the half way point. They are amazing live. That 5 people can create such a sound vocally is mind blowing. Pick anything and you won't be disappointed but my recommendation would be Bohemian Rhapsody. You have to watch the video though, ok
You'll want to hear their cover of Imagine, of Amazing Grace, and so many more. I highly recommend their originals Coffee in Bed and Happy Now or if you want to hear EDM a capella "Love Again". And I recommend the videos of Daft Punk and Bohemian Rhapsody. With PTX their videos really add to the appreciation of what they do and are amazing artistic productions in themselves. So if you watch the videos of Daft Punk and Bohemian Rhapsody you'll be able to see Kevin play that full drum kit which he has apparently swallowed. On rare occasions they will play instruments -- always on full view in their videos if they do; Kevin is a highly talented cellist who beat boxes while he plays (Cello Boxing). And I expect someone below has probably told you they pretty much never do anything on a track that they can't do live on a tour.
They have SO many songs for you to listen to ... for a wide variety , try their Daft Punk, their Bohemian Rhapsody, and their version of The Prater. Those three will show how versatile they are.
The way i look at it is that they are a Pop group that sings acapella. All other acapella groups are acapella singing pop music. Personally i don't like acapella, but I'm seeing them for the third time in December. Can't wait!
Yes it's mind blowing 🤯 it's just five people!! No instruments, including no drums, no autotune. Just five incredibly talented people who I see as a gift from God!! It's either that or they are aliens! LOL 😉 I recommend Daft Punk Medley, they won their first Grammy Award for that song. You will never be disappointed by PTX!! 😊❤❤
I fully agree, there is no fair or realistic way to rate one version against another, all taste being individual. PTX is possibly the premier acapella group active today (I also love Voctive and Homefree, but PTX is my personal favorite). All five members have amazing voices, although Kevin Olusola's beat boxing and body percussion are so important that he doesn't often get a solo. I would follow up with their cover of "Hallelujah" th-cam.com/video/haFHrfmfHbc/w-d-xo.html ; check out their live performance of the Leonard Cohen classic from their 2016 Christmas TV special where they perform it live. The bass in that performance was the magnificent Avi Kaplan, who left the group on good terms in 2017 and was replaced by Matt Sallee, another extraordinary talent. They do both covers and a significant catalog of original music; it's been said by many that PTX doesn't do covers, they do upgrades. Welcome to the fold!
Most people have a hard time believing at first that there are very rarely any instruments harmed in the making of Pentatonix music. If they do use instruments they are use sparingly and appropriately, and the instruments are treated very well.
Recommend their cover of The Prayer. Also, when you do react to their videos, you will probably need to pause a lot and use image filters to get by copyrighting issues.
Welcome to PTX…now that you’ve dipped your toe in the water that is Pentatonix, you should listen to Hallelujah (the official video) to hear the original bass, Avi Kaplan. But, no matter which bass you get, Avi or Matt, you’re in for a stellar experience!!!
I wish you were watching the video! All music with their mouths.... They are the best Acapella group ever. Please, start reacting to them. You will be blown away at what they do.
Wait, don't watch Bohemian rhapsody. They sing the guitar solo, and Kevin does amazing on his beatboxing. It's crazy what they do with it. I'm not sure you would believe it either. Lol
I'm another Pentaholic. Thank you for your reaction. Everyone will be telling you that this "drum kit" is the amazing Kevin Olusola. Please do more! You must go next to their Daft Punk Medley.
Just subbed for more PTX reactions! Videos are almost a must with this group, it’s cool to see who is doing what… I’d recommend Imagine (video not live due to message of video)
There were no musical instruments - drums, bass, or anything else. Pentatonix does use occasional instruments, cello and piano are pretty much it, but what fooled you - and many others, so don't feel bad - is the astonishing beatboxing of Kevin Olusala. I believe him to be the best beatboxer in the music business today. Pentatonix has about 200+ videos on TH-cam about 2/3 covers and 1/3 originals. Since you seem to like older music, I'd recommend their covers of Imagine (Lennon), Say Something (A Great Big World) Can't Help Falling In Love (Elvis Presley) God Only Knows (Beach Boys), Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen). I'd also recommend some of their originals like Love Again, Happy Now, Can't Sleep Love, and Coffee In Bed. Whatever you listen to by PTX (the abbreviated version of their name) you will likely love it and will convince you to join our big family of Pentaholics!
Very nice. Kevin “drum kit” Olusola has a nice tenor and has been a concert quality junior cellist and saxophonist. Since you were dropped into this cold, it’s no surprise that KO fooled you. They’ve been at this quite a while. If you want to drop down the rabbit hole, I’d advise checking out their live work - their Hollywood Bowl live stream from 2022 and Popspring from 2016 have good sound.
If you want to see them perform live, they were on the British TV show Sunday Brunch back in 2017. The one benefit about seeing them perform is you can see who is doing what. To really really really change what you think of a cappella, you should react to their Daft Punk medley.
They do a lot of "reimaginings" as well as original songs. They have hundreds of songs in their catalog. Older songs they have redone are Bohemian Rhapsody, Hallelujah, My Favorite Things, and God Only Knows. You can also try their covers of Come Along and Radioactive, their Daft Punk medley, their 90s Dance medley, their New Rules x Are You That Somebody mashup, and some original songs like A Little Space ft Ateez, Love Again, Sing and Coffee In Bed.
You can't go wrong listening to anything Pentatonix has released; it's all gorgeous. But all pentaholics have our own personal favorites that we like to recommend. These are some of my favorites: • "Hallelujah" (the official video, with Avi) • "Hallelujah" ( a recent live performance, with Matt: th-cam.com/video/ASYzLoi810k/w-d-xo.html ) • "Imagine" (the official video) • "Run To You" (an original, written by Avi and Kevin) • "Happy Now" • "Daft Punk Medley" (their first Grammy winner) • "O Come All Ye Faithful" • "The Prayer" • "Bohemian Rhapsody" • "You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch" • "The Lucky Ones" (an original, written by Scott) • "Thank You" (an original, written by Scott and his then fiancé, now husband, Mark Manio Hoying, shortly after the end of COVID lockdown, about how much easier it was to get through that time because they were together) • "The Kevin Show/Kevin's Fifth." This is a live feed from a concert they gave in Owensboro, Kentucky, Kevin's home town: th-cam.com/video/DbCasvcNx78/w-d-xo.html Additionally, IF you're familiar with _"The Wizard Of Oz"_ (the 1939 movie starring Judy Garland), I recommend "Todrick Hall - The Wizard of Ahhhs (ft. Pentatonix)": th-cam.com/video/QkVeKb2igrg/w-d-xo.html If you've never seen the movie it won't make sense, so take care of that first.
Before the entire Pentaholic mob scream as one, I will lead... HEADPHONES! Huge difference. If there is an instrument involved it is almost always front and center, usually KEVIN and his faithful cello Beyonce. He is extraordinarily talented and eats drum kits for breakfast. GO see what they do with Bohemian Rhapsody! Only one member change in 12 years their original bass, Avi Kaplan, left due to exhausting tour schedule and family health problems. (now has a stellar solo career). Matt Sallee, guy in white jacket here took over.
Pentatonix is definitely NOT a "high school music club!" If you go to their catalog, you will find quite a diversity in their music choices. They have done everything from a Daft Punk mashup, a Radioactive video WITH instruments (Kevin (beatboxer) plays the cell and Lindsay Stirling adds her violin), to their huge amount of Christmas music. They have a lot of original music, as well. Their version of Bohemian Rhapsody is acclaimed by Brian May, as well.
No drums. I always have to make people watch a video so they can see it to believe it! Kevin is a musical master. Scott kicked things off, followed by Mitch, then Matt and finally Kirstin before it went back to Matt. And they arrange the music as well as performing it. You might enjoy their Daft Punk medley.
Hello Pentatonix fans!!
Thank you so much for all your comments correcting that there is in fact NO instruments used in this recording! It is absolutely astounding that Kevin made all those sounds using his voice. Beatboxers are quite something, huh?!
Also, just to touch on a comment I’ve received regarding my listening environment:
Do not worry, I am using a pair of matched Yamaha HS7 studio monitors, calibrated with Sonarworks software. As a Sound Engineering student, the listening environment is really really important to me. The stereo image is as perfect as they can be in my home studio setup :)
Also, I was unaware that there was a video to support this. I usually don't react to music videos if I don't know their significance. I was originally told to just listen, not watch, so I just listened. I will, in future, watch the music videos.
Thank you all, I can’t wait to read your comments!!
There is something to be said for just listening.
I enjoyed just listening. I think your definition of a capella was more in line with barbershop groups.
You are about to go down the ptx rabbit hole,no gimmicks needed they are pure genius ,all instruments are Kevin !❤welcome 😊
Also you must wear earphones while listening to Pentatonix 😊
Daft Punk and Dance of the Sugar Plum were GRAMMY wins for them together with Jolene with Dolly Parton herself for a third!
Medley of Michael Jackson From his childhood all the way through his songs.
Pentatonix
They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that.
The founding members are:-
Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead);
Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease);
Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair), true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and
Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese).
A good watch is "The Recording of Evergreen" where a camera was invited into the studio for the second week of recording/
Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work.
Yes, the percussion is made by machine. The machine's name is Kevin Olusola. He's also known as the "human 808".
If you find that Pentatonix is performing live near your hometown, GET A TICKET. The drums are through the body of Kevin. He also sings tenor!
You really need to watch the official video, Kevin Olusolo does the beat boxing in this performance - he is the drums.
Once you get deeper into their music...I suggest to everyone....go to a concert......it's life changing!
Agreed! I have been to two of their concerts so far and have tickets to their Christmas one in Orlando Florida this December and I can’t wait!
Couple all of that with he completed a pre-med major at Yale and speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese, and you have one amazingly talented young man!!
Kirstin
That is 100% vocals, no instruments. You're hearing the amazing Kevin Olusola (beat boxer) and Matt Sallee (bass).
There are live versions of them singing this that will show you how they do this, on their own. Try Bohemian Rhapsody, Daft Punk, Havana - so many others. They have hundreds of videos here on You Tube.
The live performance of Daft Punk medley really shows how amazing they are
Pentatonix has covered a pretty wide variety of music from several genres, including pop, EDM, rock, worship music, holiday music, and more.
Many reactors would agree.)
4th to sing, & the only female, is Kirsten Maldanado.
Suggestions:
Imagine, When The Party's Over, Hallelujah, The Prayer, 90's Dance Medley, Evolution of Michael Jackson.I Rise (original), Love Again( original), Coffee In Bed (original).
PTX has been touched by the hands of angels!!
Enjoyed your take on this. More Pentatonix please. 😊
Welcome to the world of modern accapella. Grab a cocktail. You have a lot of new things to love.
I would love to have you watch their version of “Imagine” - beautifully done and the vocals are amplified by the visuals ❤
Thanks for this - I enjoyed it
That’s all them! 5 amazing voices and No instruments. Check out their cover of Hallelujah next. It’s just perfect.
Wait till you hear them do their cover of Bohemian Rhapsody. It's awesome!
Ooooo! I LOVE new Pentatonix reactors! 💖 I just subbed!
Great reaction! You are now a Pentaholic! Welcome to the PTX rabbit hole.
Great reaction, thanks for sharing your time and thoughts. Would love anything you choose, with Pentatonix there are no bad choices. New subscriber here from Ohio,USA. Peace and blessings.✌🤗
Thanks for a nice reaction! Actually, all of the percussion sounds were made by their beatboxer. No percussion instruments were used.
Definitely here for Pentatonix
Thank you for listening and reacting to Pentatonix! I think you will enjoy and appreciate this group so much better if you can watch them perform.
No drums. Kevin is a beat boxer. All the sound comes from his mouth, his foot and his hands.
Thanks for your reaction. They are amazing , I recommend the cover of Gold by Kiara.
Great reaction. This group is so talented, and I can't get enough of them.
Always use headphones when listening to PTX! And if you really want to see what they can do: do their „daft punk medley“!
The next Pentatonix song you listen to, wear earbuds or headphones. The experience is amazing and also watch the actual videos.
Yes, Bohemian Rhapsody is one of their best covers. I enjoyed it very much!
Definitely worth watching the video to see who does what. Also, headphones enhance the vocal experience.
Next - Watch Hallelujah. 👍🏼
Lol
they do a live video of this, you should watch - thanks for listening. The Bass in this is a replacement from the first ( he left on good terms)
I'm another Pentaholic. Thank you for your reaction. Everyone will be telling you that this "drum kit" is the amazing Kevin Olusola. Please do more! You must go next to their Daft Punk Medley.
More, please. Thank you.
Watch the video and you see, how Kevin does the drums with his beatboxing.
This song, and video, are by far my favorite version of this song!
More Pentatonix please!
These are some of my favorites:
• "Hallelujah" (the official video, with Avi)
• "Hallelujah" ( a recent live performance, with Matt: th-cam.com/video/ASYzLoi810k/w-d-xo.html )
• "Imagine" (the official video)
• "Run To You" (an original, written by Avi and Kevin)
• "Happy Now"
• "Daft Punk Medley" (their first Grammy winner)
• "O Come All Ye Faithful"
• "The Prayer"
• "Bohemian Rhapsody"
• "You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch"
• "The Lucky Ones" (an original, written by Scott)
• "Thank You" (an original, written by Scott and his then fiancé, now husband, Mark Manio Hoying, shortly after the end of COVID lockdown, about how much easier it was to get through that time because they were together)
• "The Kevin Show/Kevin's Fifth." This is a live feed from a concert they gave in Owensboro, Kentucky, Kevin's home town: th-cam.com/video/DbCasvcNx78/w-d-xo.html
Additionally, IF you're familiar with _"The Wizard Of Oz"_ (the 1939 movie starring Judy Garland), I recommend "Todrick Hall - The Wizard of Ahhhs (ft. Pentatonix)": th-cam.com/video/QkVeKb2igrg/w-d-xo.html
If you've never seen the movie it won't make sense, so take care of that first.
The depth of the presentation changed the mood and outcome to a much more positive result.
You really must watch the videos with Pentatonix, you miss a great deal if you don't!!
Well I had to subscribe to watch you learn about PTX. I think you are going to be amazed. Hallelujah come to mind.
Actually, after Kirstin it went back to the original singer Scott. (Not Matt). ❤
@@kimkathrein2463 oops. That's what I meant!
Great reaction!! I believe you’ll be a Pentaholic in no time!! The drum kit is called Kevin. 😂 ❤PTX
Earphones are a must. They really let you hear everything.
Subbed for more PTX reactions.
PTX -- Great Reaction!!
Yes. Hallelujah by Pentatonic is a game changer. Must review.
Please react to some of their live versions 😊
