I love some of those jazzy lines by the Steely Dan guys (Denny Diaz, Jeff Baxter, Larry Carlton). Love the lines in Bodisattva, Gold Teeth II, Kid Charlemagne.
Peter suddenly feels a shiver as GB material drops but not on his channel. Great job man you don’t need to prove what you’re talking about your playing is outstanding!
that's because Peter Farrell wants to sell a lesson where he explains all these chips, and Chase explains without trying to make money on every finger movement. Thank you, Chase!😅!❤❤
Great video. Makes a lot of sense. I studied the William Leavitt Berklee system and could never work out why I never came close to playing like guys like George Benson. Now I known why.
I’ve been steam rolling arps in similar fashion for a while now. Sometimes I think of it as too gimmicky, but I keep on doing it lol. The finger symmetry is definitely the way to fluidity. Thank you for validating it.
Thanks, Chase. Your lessons are always amazing! I like that you introduced the idea of related chord arpeggios. I’m traveling without my guitar, but will be home later today to try it out. Can’t wait. I think the “wrong” (outside) notes are the spice that makes jazz sound so awesome.
I know I've said it before but man, I really love everything about that guitar. The look, the tone, it's gorgeous. I'm sure it feels just as awesome. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge!
Good afternoon. Great to see you again. Two of them guys you associate with your new teaching program, personally, I would strongly recommend your listeners to check out. Of course your teacher. As I mentioned to you before, I got hip to him during the pandemic. The other guy is Rodney. Very likely he wouldn’t remer me. Suffice to say we played together. Also have a very funny story of him and from the days he was Diz’s guitarist. He was real young then. The other guys I don’t know them, but if they are bunched the two I know and recommend, it’s a monster lineup!! Will keep checking on you, Bro. Stay Blessed.
Hi Chase, thank you for making this subject so accessible. I don’t want to open up old wounds but, I was horrified by Peter Farrell’s rude and abusive comments to subscribers on his channel and explained that not one penny of my money is going to him. Naturally, he deleted my comment, the subscriber’s legitimate question and his godawful graceless reply. Thank you for making GB’s music accessible to all in an intelligent and professional manner.
I’ve very briefly considered using Peter Ferrell as a gateway to George Bensons methods and techniques, but his massive ego also deterred me and I decided it will never be worth it. Won’t get a dime from me, or many musicians for that matter. But with his attitude he probably doesn’t care which is also fine I guess.
You and I appear to have come to the same conclusion independently. Could you imagine trying to navigate the occasional administrative hiccups when purchasing lessons/courses? I just know he’d be an absolute pain in the arse to do business with. 🤣
@@williamhumphrey1084 thank you for your valuable contribution. Feel free to ask a sensible question of PF and brace yourself for the liquid shit of a reply. Sorry for any offence taken, but proceed with caution with that ghastly tool.
I stumbled upon this video. It’s very well explained and, in my opinion, highlights GB’s style and technique very effectively. The score at 4:30 is also very helpful. I take the principle of the video rather than the actual phrase used as an example. It is difficult to sweep upwards as shown in the last measure using GB’s picking technique. In my opinion, he sweeps upwards less often and in a different context. Also, GB doesn’t use his pinky often. You are very knowledgeable about his playing, so I presume you already know this. Perhaps illustrating this concept using an excerpt from his actual solo and video would drive the point home.
Hi Chase, love your site. Do you ever cross into rock like Matteo Mancuso? Wonderful jazz player, then he goes off playing metal and hard rock. It’s pretty cool and surprising. I’m sure you can.
IF that works for you. - fine - coming from harmonically expanded R&B [ which means closer to the beat hard swing ] [ Brecker / Benson ] type time feel - I alternate all the time arpeggios / lines / skips / much easier on the brain - people ask about sweeping and assume I must be but I am not. I love George Benson - the most passionate of all Jazz Guitarists and a musical genius . But just remember time feel is enabled by your picking not caused by it. So IF you can get the sweep thing natural without thinking about it - fine. We can have some fun challenges...when I debut some 'new music.'.. I like the Musicality of your playing and concepts ..and interpreting GB ... But picking - has to be ' wreckless precision ' .Thoughtless.
Thank you for the great lesson! 1:21 You play very well in this demonstration, but the drums are completely drowning you out. Friendly suggestion: Lower the volume of the drums in the mix.
How dare you use the name GB, that belongs to me. How dare you use the term "fast arpeggios' that belongs to me, I copyrighted it. How dare you say "play", I am the only one who can PLAY 😄😄😄
Sweeping down the arpeggio isn't so hard when you get the hang of it but sweeping up is very difficult, which I don't think Benson does so much, that's more of a Gambale thing. I usually sweep down some arpeggios and play some more chromatic bebop scale Martino kind of lines going up.
so what you're saying here is, George Brunson is a geniu is almost superhuman. and let's be honest most people are not gonna be able to play like that ever. And that's George Benson his prime. And sure that's a little different than what you can play now. But The observation that music sounds different when you played fast versus slow as aconcept concept because if you play something wrong kind of ignore or not depending on what you play so it's a experiments and sound.
What did you think of the lesson? What topic/concept do you want me to cover next? Let me know in the comments!
Great lesson thanks will practice ths. FYI you have a spelling mistake in your superimposed text for the steps - Step 3: Secrect - should be "Secret"

A disturbance in the force 😂 Thanks! I said prove, but I really mean more of a demonstration of the concepts 👍
Way better explained than in this Peter Farrell guy's channel thanks so much! The real deal !

Awesome! Thank you! When I say “wrong” notes I mean that they don’t fit the scale of the harmony, not that they don’t work or sound good 👍
@@ChaseMaddox absolutely. Straight “correct” diatonic playing tends to get a little monotonous. Thanks, again.

Yes! I’ve done a TON of videos on Benson where I go into some of these other aspects you’re talking about 👍
Have you thought abaout having George Benson himself on one of your courses on your channel?
"What topic/concept do you want me to cover next?" How to make a song from a short melody you've made up. (if not covered already)
When you say "how to make a song" do you mean how to harmonize the melody? Or how to turn a melody into a full composition?
Total geek question: what pick are you using here? Thanks so much!
Fender Heavy picks
Great content! Just a quick note... In the bullet points on screen, the word "secret" is misspelled. Hope that helps.
Cmon, a typo like that is insignificant. That's what you got out of the lesson?
Better be careful Peter Farrell will be getting his lawyers on to you 🤣🤣🤣
Hahaha 😂
