    So, you went to community college and got into Georgetown? That's amazing. Does that mean that where you go for pre-med is not crucial for a good med school? Thanks

      Hi,
      Thanks for the comment and watching! Sort of. I did my first 2 years at a community college and then transferred to a 4 year university where I graduated (University of Texas). I usually recommend to students to go to a community college first where the classes are smaller and tuition is cheaper then transfer to a university! Hope this helps!

    first, I would like to say I am totally loving your channel I already subscribed ! now I am looking forward to reading your book. I Am a biology major and a freshman, in one of your videos you were discussing applying to medical school, and not having to be a biology major or science major. My question, or questions are. Wouldn't it be a little more difficult to major in a art than science? because the MCAT is based on science courses? Also would changing my major to nursing be more beneficial for the experience ? lastly, how would someone go about finding a Mentor to help guide them through all the different paths and options? sorry for this long message lol

    I needed this video very much!! I was urging myself if I should continue in respiratory therapist (which has a great job outlook in my state) so that I can make some money while studying pre reqs and that I can have something to fall back to in case I didn’t get accepted the first time. But with bs in bio, I don’t think I have such opportunity. Thank you

    I'm currently a medical scribe and I have day to day interaction with doctors. They are really helpful and they can also write you a letter of recommendation for when you apply to Medical School or PA school. I've worked with a PA who was a scribe herself and she came back to work at the same hospital she scribed at. So if you're looking for a job to do during the process scribing could be an option as well.

    So when you said you applied to medical school 3 times, did you mean to only 3 schools? Or did you apply 3 different years and you got in on your third year? And one more question, what did you do in the time you didn't get in? Were you interning somewhere or Volunteering? I love your videos man! I'm hoping to get into med school some day, it's something that I REALLY want to do.

      Hi,
      Thanks for the comment and watching! Good question. I applied for 3 years and got into a post bac program my 3rd year. During that time, I worked in the ICU as a ICU tech and studied for the MCAT, volunteered here and there. Basically things to improve my app.

    I'm a freshman in college and I started of kind of badly. I have A's B's and an F in Psychology. I was wondering if I could take this over to bring up my gpa. And if so would it look bad on my resume? Is it too late?

    • @TheBanderson22
      @TheBanderson22 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Its not too late. Retake it and get an A. Most universities allow a forgiveness for a grade.

    • @sharpasnails7601
      @sharpasnails7601 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ben That only works for undergrad. Both MD and (as of this year) DO schools average the grades if you take a class more than once. That being said, you should definitely re-take it and get an A so that your overall GPA will go up.

    Doc, as non-US IMG, what things can I do to stand out in NRMP application other than good USMLE scores/volunteering?

    • @antoniowebbmd
      @antoniowebbmd  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ash S That's a hard question. I think the best way is to network and get to know people. It really is all about who you know. Search for residency programs that accept Img students and apply to those. Rotate and do a clerkship or spend a year doing research. Hope this helps!

      Hi Ash, what state do you live in? I am apart of a nonprofit organization called NAAD (New american alliance for development) who funds, mentors and guides IMG's to match for residencies in the U.S. We are located in Minnesota. We are currently helping 81 IMG's gain residency. We have helped many IMG's successfully match in excellent programs. newamericansalliance.org/ You don't just need good USMLE scores you need excellent USMLE scores. Also, you really need to maintain involvement in medicine itself- this is crucial to the process of matching. Do everything in your power to be apart of medicine/healthcare settings and remain current in medicine. Networking is very helpful, too. Hope that helps.

      Hey Ash, you can email me at hege0055@umn.edu. Unfortunately NAAD only operates on grants within MN, hence we are funded through grants which are then given to MN residents (IMG's who live here). We are fairly new and so we have limitations.

    Hi! I jst wanna know what you mean by completing pre reqs without having science undergrad degree? Is this before going to med school we have to do some science courses extra?
    Please answer me asap.
    Thanks

    • @antoniowebbmd
      @antoniowebbmd  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi,
      That's a good question. I actually sat on the admissions board at Georgetown while in med school and learned a quite bit about applying, etc. Lately, most med schools have started to like students with non bio/non chem degrees. But, major in something that you enjoy learning about. If it's not bio or chem, then do the pre-reqs additionally. If you want to major in music, then do that. And then just do the pre-reqs for med school. That will be perfectly fine and may actually make you stand out from the majority who have a biology or chemistry degree. If I had to recommend a degree to a pre medical student, it would be to pick a major that after you graduate (and while applying to medical school) that you can make some income. Examples include: nursing degree, tech jobs associated with a degree, computer degrees, etc. I hope this helps and good luck!

    Am I the only person having trouble getting into some sort of volunteer work or shadowing?
    At every place I have contacted inquiring about volunteer work, the receptionist has very awkwardly said, "No..?" or "No? But you can volunteer anytime..." (which seems very contradictory lol). I assume if I call and ask to speak with the doc directly, the receptionist will likely tell me he/she is busy, or try to help me on their own, offering little advice.
    Apparently, my university has a program through our regional hospital for this kind of thing. So, I called the HR Dept. and spoke with a recruiter, and she knew nothing of it. She took my number down and told me she would give a call back after she does some digging [for information about it]. A few days later, I called to check up on it and she was on vacation, so I left a message and she called back a few more days later. She informed me that she has found the lady in charge of the program with my university, and has transferred my number to her. This was about four days ago.
    The one place I have the highest chance of volunteering for seems to be in no rush to get me started. I'm not sure if there is anything else I can do.
    Looking for any advice--I would greatly appreciate it.

      CatsCanCatScan your volunteer work doesn’t have to be clinical. I volunteer at a boys and girls club while working 15 hours a week in property management and doing school. Nowadays, just shadowing in a hospital is sufficient enough to show that you know what you’re getting into and it’ll lead to letters of recommendation. Getting a sales job and learning some communication skills has helped me a lot.
