- At the end of the day, do whatever makes you happy haha :) But, loading my Leica M6 this way has made things extremely easy AND I get 2 extra frames from each roll. So it's literally saving me time and money. I've loaded my Leica this way since I've gotten it. And I've never had an issue. As long as you push the film cannister all the way down and make sure there's enough film between 2 of the prongs, as illiustrated on the camera...you're good homey!

Most important thing to mention is to watch for the rewind knob spinning as you advance to ensure it’s loaded properly. That’s the only way to know for certain.
I did not see the rewind knob spin as he shot the camera after loading the film. 🤔
@@dsimon9s29 you might not see it in the first one or two winds if the film has no tension yet. Best to close the camera, wind the know gently (like you're rewinding the film) until you feel some tension, then advance and the rewind knob should instantly spin.

Actually, you do have to verify the sprocket teeth are properly engaged in the film take up holes. Failing to do that can lead to tears in the film itself. You'd be surprised what can go wrong by failing to check
Watching this is like when my - now 22 year old daughter - tried to play a record for the first time. I'm digital in any way (though 60) but bought my Leica M6 in 1995 and still use it. I'm NOT laughing in any way of this. I just really enjoy people are going analogue. Have a lot of fun out there. Listening to LP´s and taking pictures with a film camera - no matter what kind - is immersion. A real joy. Take care out there. Lots of regards from a Leica M6 photographer and TV cameraman for 28 years.
I love my M6 - its so easy to load. On TH-cam, definitely have seen the poking and pulling. You’re probably one of the few that demonstrated the easiest and the repeat process - that was the best - should definitely help people out. Loved the video!

Yessir!! It's called "rapid load" for a reason haha. Do you think the geniuses behind this camera would make this camera load slower than the M2 or M3??? Naw, son haha. Trust the process ;)
Pro tip. Charge the shutter, then load the film in the dark, before pulling out the leader. You’ll squeeze out a few extra frames that way. 😁
Actually the Rapid load system was introduce by the M2R. It was commission by the US military in the 60' cause they needed a more fast way to load films. And they just kept this system for all the Leica M after that :)
Only 2000 M2-Rs produced total. All were silver/chrome. The holy grail would be a black paint M2-R with well worn brassing factory made. But Leica didn't make any. I have a silver/chrome one and I love it.
It sounds so easy, but it isn't always as simple as that. It wouldn't be the first time the film doesn't catch for some reason. I like to advance at least once, and line up the film with the sprockets before I close the lit. Again it wouldn't be the first time something goes wrong inside. Maybe I'm experiencing some problems with my M4, but I doubt it. Better to be safe, than sorry.

Hahaha, yeah, I was debating whether putting this information out, because it's boring but it sounds like there's some Leica owners out there like, "ohhh, wait what!?!? That makes wayyy more sense." It's the little and more efficient ways that can make things a little more enjoyable. So just sharing my dirty little secrets. I have a few.

Glad to see I’m not the only M6 shooter and forever Leica lover who cringes every time I see another hipster (I first shot M6 when I graduated high school in 84) loading this wrong! I see your video is 3 years old, but they’re STILL LOADING IT WRONG!
Dude seriously your videos are absolutely superb. Your whole attitude is so straight up and no bullshit I love it. It makes me want to start making videos for the hell of it. It's so true that *many* peeps really don't understand the idea of quick loading. Camera manuals are pretty cool yo, lol.

Also, I know some people really hate on the Leica loading method because you have to take off the bottom plate but I find it way faster and I never have to guess if my film is spooled on right. I’ve used plenty of “normal” 35mm cameras with the swinging back and had issues on various cameras trying to get my film to spool properly. Never once had an issue with my old M7 or my current M4.

Thank you man!! Yeah, I've seen videos or people load their quick load system slower than the spooled M3/M2 hahha. Before I even bought my M6, I was thinking, "that's not right, or that seems wayyy illogical. Why would they make this new system if it aint actually quicker??" Little did I know, people were just doing it wrong haha.
i actually had one instance, when the wheel didnt do its job and the first frame was partially exposed onto the sprocket holes... makes me wonder how i fucked that up ... definitely makes me pay more closer attention yet not trying make rocket science out of it... thanks for sharing!
The trick really is understanding your camera. People fidget around with their M's because they are scared of loading the film incorrectly, while all you need to do is upon loading the film like you did, wind it up and check if there is resistance. If there is resistance the film is loaded correctly. If you want to be extra sure you can even put the camera to your ear and you'll hear the film being wound up as you wind the leaver.
100% true, it's like the guy who gets in a relationship and is feared of being cheated on because he's heard nightmare stories when he's got the dopest girl in the world hahaha.

Nice video man! I also often can't resist lining up the sprockets over the teeth but perhaps I should have more faith again and let the camera do its job 😂 I always check the rewind spool on the first few shots anyway, and this proper method gives less wasted film.
Yes, trust the German geniuses who made the camera haha. Yeah, I get 2 extra frames from every roll :) I've never had an issue with my camera. I don't even really look at the rewind spool either haha.

Such a great video. I'd like to add there is a variable that Leica engineering and design cannot control: the film. Specifically, some films will have bends in the leader caused by the pressure from being stored in a plastic canister. That bend *can prevent the film from aligning with the sprockets. In addition to what's taught in this video, I really do suggest one thing that will add a mere few seconds to the process: do a visual check to make sure the sprocket holes are lined up with the sprockets. I misloaded my 2nd roll ever through my M6, and have done that little check ever since.

Hahaha, get it!!! Trust me, no issues over here. I'm all about getting gear. The "hipster" joke was for the loading system. It's suppose to be "rapid" and "quick" for a reason. Hope this video helps though, you should be able to load your m4 wayyyy more efficient this way. AND you get 2 extra frames in your roll.

Coming from a M2 with classic loading, it was the way to go, with checking if the rewind knob started to rotate. Now I own another M2 with the same quick loading mechanism as my M6. And I don’t worry anymore. Thanks for confirming that I now got it right
No worries. And here's a little tip, I don't know why I did this in the video because I seriously don't ever do this in real life. I only press the shutter and advance the film ONCE only ONCE (In the video, I do it twice, I think i was nervous recording or something haha), so you actually get 3 EXTRA FRAMES. So my 24 exposure rolls become 27 and so on and so forth.
I cut my own rolls, so I always have 36 exposures from a cassette.
Finally someone showing it correctly! Almost all the other how to's waste 3 to 5 frames with winding while open or some other bs.
I'm saying, right!? haha. I felt it was a silly video to put out, but at the same time, it kind of needed to be out there. The speed and effiency of this camera is top notch, but people aren't loading it or using it correctly haha. Thanks for taking out time to comment :)
Or you can just check the tension on the rewind knob to know the film has been loaded correctly after a few advances on the film lever. Tension means its caught and loaded, free spinning means it didnt.
Finally someone on TH-cam got it right. Apparently people don't like to read the manual and like wasting film!
This is good until you shoot a "ghost" roll. When you click off the first couple shots, make sure the rewind knob spins (when you advance the film). If it does you're good, if not, those "teeth" are missing the roll, so no problem making sure those teeth are lined up before putting the base plate back on.
Not sure about the M6, but on most all film cameras, you'll know you've done it right, if you watch the film rewind knob turn as you advance the film. Turn in the opposite direction of the rewind.

I’ve gotten a new pet peeve from watching loading videos like this, where you always hear «you’re doing wrong, this here right!» And while they’re not wrong, they never mention eyeballin’ the rewind knob to make sure you don’t miss a whole rolls worth of shots. Especially if you’ll be trusting the quickloading M-series - already caught it slipping a dozen times when trying to be quick.
Just wanna note, it is possible for the leader to miss the forks when you drop it in. It’s happened to me a few times in the 10 years I’ve had mine, so I’d always at least check to make sure it’s between the forks at minimum. You’d probably miss that if it happened while blindfolded..hehe
I think you would miss alot if you're blindfolded hahaha. But yeah, I encourage people to make sure the film cannister is pressed to the bottom, and enough film put into the prongs--more is better than too little.

I actually following this and there were two instances that my MP failed to load. Wasted lot times and memories - may be I did something wrong.
You want to rewind and make sure the knob is rolling when wind the film as another comment says.

That explains why you successfully loaded it with little effort during your blindfold test. In my Nikon FM2, I have to check if the film holes align with the sprocket. Excellent mechanism, Leica.
Exactly! I was pretty confident in the whole blind fold test. The loading was the least of my worries. It was more so trying to expose a shadowed room with out seeing haha. Thanks for the watch and comment. Appreciate you.

You can get away with one less advance, too. Film economy is great on M's when loaded properly. Good stuff, man.
You're absooolutely right. I actually do that normally, but for some weird reason, because I was on video I felt pressured to go one more. That's why it was a little delayed when I did it haha. I'm one of the ones that like to "creatively burn" the half frame too :)

Im gonna be honest. It is definitely possible to fuck up the loading by doing this. I watched this video and did exactly what you did and the camera did not load my film correctly. I should have just went with the normal procedure of looking at the gears pull the film. I lost the first 3 days of my trip.

Damn! I don't remember. I'm pretty sure its just a cheap rope strap from Amazon. I don't really care for expensive straps. As long as it has the leather to protect the camera lugs, i'm good. And the length is 100cm.

How many times we have to wind it up and release the shutter according to the manual before we "really" shoot? Would it be enough to do it only once for instance compared to two times? In this case: Would it be possible to have a frame more (37 frames instead of 36)

Trust me, you won't regret it. Saves time AND money. You get 2-3 extra frames. You actually only need to advance the film once and youre ready to shoot. 3 extra frames that way.

That’s how I used to load my Leicas. Then I had two consecutive rolls in my M4 mis-load and since then, I make sure the film aligns with the sprocket.
But maybe I’ll give this way another try.

I would say, the only thing that could pose a problem is if your film is bent up from being in a bag, pocket etc. And as long as you push the canister down all the way and lead the film between the 2 prongs with enough film (too little would be worse than too much), you should be good to go. Pretty simple. I've had my camera a year and never ever had any issues. Btw, thanks for the watch and taking out time to comment :)
I’ve had a mis-load before also, so now I always make sure the sprockets catch the film before I close it up. I’d rather spend a few more seconds doing that to feel confident it catches.

Hey, thanks for the watch and the comment. Honestly, I won't be putting out the "focus by feel" video for a month or so, because I have other videos in the works AND it's going to be a 2 part series because it's a little complicated. Also, to be PERFECTLY HONEST, I'm not sure how much it will help you in your given situation. Because with this focusing technique, it can get you in the ballpark if not the exact distance for 1 shot mayyybe 2 shots ie. for street photography or candids. BUT, for Portraiture/Fashion, where you can shoot an entire roll on one look, it's very difficult, especially shooting WIDE OPEN. Trust me, I've tried. And for this same exact reason is why i bought the Contax G2, to eleminate this headache all together. And personally I love movement in my shots, so it's even harder with a Leica shooting at F2 or F2.8. BUT, if there's a will there's a way. I'm sure if you work hard enough at it and master your tool as much as you can (I had to figure out the focus by feel method by myself, with no help, no videos, no nothing, for STREET PHOTOGRAPHY specifically), I'm sure you can make it happen. Then you can show ME how to shoot portraiture with a Leica hahaha :) Sometimes, things take good ol' fashion work ethic and repetition. No cheat codes :) Hope this helps brotha...or not help. Just wanted to be genuine with you.

Ill have to give this a try... on my 3rd roll now with my M6... I'm that guy that's loading it super carefully doing a little rewinding of it before closing it to make sure the teeth catch.... LOL... I guess I'll just have to trust the process next film I load.
Trust me, I get it. But you gotta remember what this camera was built for haha. I think the engineers did a decent job in thinking of solving the loading issue :)

Hey man, it kind of is haha. It's kind of like renting it if you think about. Use it for 5 yrs and sell it for the same price if it's not beaten up. Maybe even for more. The other day I found an m6 going for 1350 GBP. I wish I had the money to buy it because next year I could sell it for 1900 GBP eassssy!!! But this is man to man--good luck with convincing your wife haha.
If you're like me and have so many cameras, the wife will not even notice another camera!
If you turn the rewind wheel once you've dropped the canister in a couple of times, the canister spool will fall into place automatically.

Please add another update video the day the roll sprockets don't catch the teeth and you shoot one roll thinking that you have amazing pictures and you have missed all of them. This happened to me on my M6 TTL whilst taking pictures in Great wall of China and I triple check every time I load a roll ever since. Your technique will work most of the time but it will eventually fail because it's a mechanical system manually loaded
Damn that sucks, but honestly, that has literally never ever happened to me. I've been loading my camera like this since day 1. No blank rolls ever. The only thing that has happened, I think twice, is my film was bent a little and it got caught to where I couldn't advance my first frame. Again, nothing to do with the camera though and it's loading system. That sucks though. Maybe ill timed bad luck. I think what helps ME PERSONALLY, kind of a life thing too, I don't focus my energy on the bad, thus not attracting it. "I be about the things I want, not the things I don't want." So I've never thought about a blank roll in my life. And I never ever got one.
One more thing to add: you can save a frame here, you only need to fire one blank frame after loading it, not two :)
You're are absolutely right!! If you go back and see the video, there's a weird hesitancy with advancing the 2nd frame haha. Because I actually don't ever do it. But for some reason, I did it for the camera. Funny, when you do things normally, but when a camera is recording, you act different hahaha.

Thinking back, the only time i loaded it the way you showed was the very first time i loaded mine, probably because i read the manual alongside. after that, loading on the go, i was always concerned that the film wouldn't catch on to the little teeth on the reel and then I started with the fumbling. great to know i can just trust the design of the camera and let it do the work. another reason to love the damn thing!

@@jaeAre200 Actually in my case, it was almost like the law of attraction took me to your video of the law or attraction :) I was already searching for the "perfect" M6 (which I still don't know which one it is i.e. Classic, TTL, Black, Chrome, Titanium, Millenium... ) then as part of my Youtbe "research", your video came on your M6 was published. So, it's definitely law of attraction working. I'll report back when it's in my grubby hands :D

Yeah your supposed to drop the film in and your are set, but... I'd rather be safe than sorry. When you are used to loading the camera for years it becomes second nature.

The film is loaded properly if the rewind knob is turning as the film is being advanced.
