    Thank you for demonstrating the potential of this set of paints. As far as turquoises, my favorite is Dan Smith's Cobalt Teal, gorgeous! Your painting demo was wonderful.

    I loved this! Thanks for doing a painting and using your new soft and hard pastels. The watercolour set is interesting because of the pure PB16 and PG 26....two of my favourites. And I did see some granulation in the painting, so it does seem after the paints were wetted for a while they behaved more normally.

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thanks! Yes, I liked those being in the set!
      Yes, there was some granulation, but definitely not as much as other brands versions of the same pigments.

    I have that sparkle paper and I use it predominantly for little projects that I turn into greeting cards. I like to leave the background white or very subtle so that the glitter can shine through. I find it fun for painting flowers or having the bit of sparkle for Christmas cards. It’s nice enough to paint on but I wouldn’t bother painting anything “serious” on it. I would classify it as “nice novelty” paper. I enjoy it for the purposes I bought it for.

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think that's a good idea for cards, because you tend to handle them and move them around a bit, so you're more likely to see it!

    Wow!! I have the very first Paul Rubens 24 colour palette, but it's nothing like this one- the colours and pigments almost exactly mirror my Schmincke Horadam 24 palette. I think the only differences were the dioxazine violet rather than manganese violet, and quinacridone maroon instead of magenta. I'm excited to try these out as a more affordable way to replace the Schmincke colours I love. 😊

      Oh, that's really interesting, thanks! I'm not that familiar with Schmincke's watercolours really, except their supergranulating ones.

    I’ve often wondered about the sparkle watercolour paper. I’ve seen other people review it and I don’t get the appeal. Always nice to have some extra paper though that you don’t feel too precious about!

    At first I really liked the watercolor layer. Then when you added the soft pastels, I was like, eeehh I'm not so sure. After you started adding touches with the harder pastels, the painting really came around. Kinda feels like an oil painting. It turned out beautifully. Keep up the wonderful work!

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Haha!! I think I like quite a bit of contrast in my pictures, but I don't feel skilled enough to achieve it with watercolours, plus I just enjoy messing around with other mediums! Thank you!

    I like my Daniel Smith paints, but that tin is pretty awesome ! I'm not a fan of "marketing names" like Oriental Green." For my usual subjects, this is too many yellows, perylene green is unforgivably missing, I'd have much preferred Indanthrone (pb60) than that indigo mix, and a payne's grey rather than black. I know Winsor Newton puts black in their palettes, but I feel like black or white in a palette just says "student level choices." And why on earth do they have BOTH orussian blue (pb27) and phthalo blue? Any new palette is fun to play with, but some of their color choices here are rather odd IMO.

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I do agree! I did like this palette, but given free reign on a choice of 24, mine would look quite different!

    Helen,
    First, thanks for doing a review on these paints.
    Ive been wondering what water colour paint sets are the better quality.
    What do you prefer?
    Im in New Zealand and we have Pueblo, schwinke and windsor and Newton.
    Be great to have your personal experience.
    Thanks, Jo.😊

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Jo, I haven't heard of the Pueblo paints, so don't know about them, but Schmincke and Winsor and Newton Professional (as opposed to Cotmans) are both good. I have paints from both those brands.

    Strange burnt umber, kinda green. Love the beach picture. Do you get seals lying on the rocks?
    I don’t understand the point of sparkly paper either if it’s that subtle. If it was super sparkly it’d be nice for illustration.
    I’ve ordered a goldline watercolour sketchbook to play with because I was being too preacious with my paper.

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, it is a bit strange - I did use it though.
      We don't get seals lying on our local beach (the odd one or two bobbing around in the cove), but there are quite a lot a few miles down the coast.
      I've not heard of Goldline before - I'll check them out!

      @@helencryer it’s clairefontaine goldline. I haven’t used it before

    • @riverAmazonNZ
      @riverAmazonNZ 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Update on the goldline - it’s ok but not amazing. It has this annoying quirk where the paper is smooth on one side and textured on the other which is ok BUT it’s not consistent! Some pages the front is smooth, others it’s the back.

    It looks a nice palette and loved what you did with it. Helen, a question - a few weeks ago you did a sketch at a church where I believe you said an ancestor was buried - can you remind me where it was? I am on holiday in Cornwall in 3 weeks time and would very much like to sketch there!

    Hi Helen , lovely video , please don't apologise for it being a little longer , I've got all day !! Are these paints pricey compared to other similar paints ? and as you mentioned , can't see that the sparkle is adding anything . As ever , thank you , Helen , Mike in Exeter xx

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi Mike, thank you!!
      This set is about £50 on Amazon at the moment, so cheaper than other good companies' 24 sets. I honestly couldn't tell much difference when using them (not that I'm an expert watercolourist, and I don't use many glazes etc) so personally it would come down to the reliability of the Lightfast ratings.
