One of the MOST interesting things about Pieter-Steph du Toit's career is how he does these hits now, and is arguably THE most influential Bok player on the field, but almost lost a leg and his career when a haematoma led to amputation being a 50/50 chance in 2020! So every moment he is out on that field he is living his second chance. An absolute Bok legend!
@@QuinMighty Schalk contracted bacterial meningitis and nearly died, yes. PSDT nearly lost his leg from a haematoma that caused the leg to swell in size. Both events are true

He nearly lost his leg three years prior to this with an incredibly rare condition. It's a miracle he's even walking, let alone putting in a Man of the Match performance in the World Cup final.
I saw a video that Eben is among the dirtiest 5 players in rugby. Is he a fair player or not? (Would like to hear foreign opinions, because in SA we love what he does, with a smile unlike the old vark Bakkies Botha)
Other thing for Amercians to note is that there is no interchange or timeouts in rugby (there are substitutions but once you are subbed off you can't come back on for the rest of the match ). So he is on the pitch for the entire 80 minutes. As soon as he completes a tackle he has to get back on his feet and rejoin the play
He had major leg surgery a few years back and is walking today with his dads achilles tendon in his leg. Despite that, in 2024 hes played 8 tests and won the man of the match award 6 times.
The bit that gets lost on Americans watching highlights is that there aren't 10 seconds of a "play" and then a minute break... the game goes for 40 minutes of play (in ~50mins).... 10 min break and then another 40mins of play (in a window of ~50mins).... and half the team, especially players like Peter-Steph are normally on the pitch for ALL of that. These guys are next level athletes!
Greetings from SA ! Here's a little fun fact : We literally start playing (no special rules) at age 6 (making the under 7 team will be your proudest moment hah) !
During half-time at the World Cup last year, Pieter Steph du Toit suddenly spoke up (keep in mind he was not the captain). It was astonishing to watch all the Springbok players listen respectfully to him when he somewhat sarcastically said: "You guys are playing scared - if you are scared just speak up, and we will make a plan!" The man is as tough as nails - there is a good chance he might be the International Rugby Player of the Year. Especially since he also scored 2 tries in the final of the annual Rugby Championship yesterday.
The top level players in Union and Gridiron could not compete at the top in the opposite sport. Not because they lack the toughness or athleticism, but because getting to the the top level requires requires a decade or more of playing and studying the game. Pretty much the only position the NFL that can regularly recruit from outside the pipeline is kicker, for obvious reasons. There's no position in rugby that can do that. Sevens is whole different story, because of the huge need for speed and conditioning along with the lack of development.
@@danielcillie1856 He doesn't play for the Chiefs. He was cut before the start of the regular season when teams have to slim down to 53. Right now he's on the Jacksonville Jaguars' practice squad. Meaning the gets paid to practice with his team but he's not eligible to play in games.

South Africa has been blessed the last 6 years or so with players that are larger than life itself. Gentle Giants that will die for their teammates and country in test rugby. Pieter Stef, RG Snyman, Duane Vermeulen, Siya Kolisi, Ox Nche, Bongi Mbonambi, and Uncle Eben. And there are so many others coming into the team that its almost hard to keep up. Amazing athlete, when he did his ACL again a year later after the first ACL, his father gave him a tendon. These guys are machines and come from the stock, of generations of hard labour. Such good people too. Legends.
