    I really don’t recommend skipping school. It’s all about the critiques! I went to CCA and Art Center for ID.
    It’s still very competitive.

      does art center teach you fundamentals? Or do you have to have some basic knowledge to get in to art center?

      I may not have had the full CCA experience, but I attended their pre-college program and visited their San Francisco campus as well as a Fuseproject (a design firm in downtown SF), and I have to say their San Francisco campus was quite impressive.

    I started my bachelor of industrial design at Monash university in Melbourne, Australia two years ago ( started with a double degree IT & industrial design , then dropped IT midway last year - so I'm kinda in my 2nd year of ID) & I feel like I have no skills and knowledge (or at least to this extent).
    I was really losing motivation & considering changing degrees again but this initiated my curiosity to learn and improve and really TRY because it genuinely looks interesting.
    Maybe I haven't had the right mindset, maybe I wasn't approaching classes the way I should or maybe the teaching style at my uni isn't what works well with me but you have given me the boOST to want to re-approach it so thank you ❤️ will be binging all your videos.
    Do you have any advice on how to learn this kind of content in a step-by-step way, any particular online resources you recommend? I feel like I need these basics & self-learn before the next semester approaches.

    Hi Jimmy! Huge fan, thanks for this helpful video. I'm a senior in HS going to major in ID, I actually just submitted to long beach today! I'm very concerned because I'm not the best sketcher and I'm worried it's something I can't be taught or get good at. Do you have any suggestions for how I could start getting better everyday? I'm already working with solidworks, keyshot and fusion360, the hard part for me is drawing. Any assurance that I will be able to learn or tips would be greatly appreciated. Also, what pencils did you use in your fall 2012 sketches? The shading is really good, that's also something I need to work on but I don't know what pencils to use, or what pens to use, or to use pencil or pen! Thanks!

    Yo this is awesome! I am a mechanical engineer at S&T but I want to be a product designer. I never knew there was a major specifically for product design called industrial design. This is super helpful information and I seriously appreciate it. I will be exploring all these skills on my own now along with my degree.

    For SFSU, our first semester we had to take design history, visual literacy, and intro to design. It's the prequisites for industrial design majors and visual communication design majors(graphic design and UX UI). We don't get to do anything hands on until Spring semester. Question, did you have IDSA in Long Beach state?

Sooo I rather do industrial design the next year and while I study that I will work in concept art illustration! Disney, Blizzard and all of this companies pay a lot of money to create those characters and landscapes that makes an awesome movie or video game! Buuuut I also want to do some technical stuff!

      Not always, but most of the time I've been at the top of my class. In school, its very common to find a range of skill level. Everyone however has strengths and weaknesses. Some might excel in sketching while others might do better in CAD. I teach to be good at everything. Breath, and Depth.

    Hey great video! Right now I'm trying to decide whether it makes sense for me to go to school for product design or just learn it on my own. I've been drawing ever since I was a kid and originally planned on becoming a 3d animator but decided product design was more practical (as I feel I don't really have what it takes for 3d anim.). I have working knowledge of 1,2,3 point perspective and have pretty much mastered object drawings at this point aswel as shading and lighting (all because of the requirements of traditional art). I am also familiar with some CAD and Blender and I plan on getting a 3d printer in a few months to test mechanisms as I am also considerably into robotics, rc cars, etc. Anyways, theres a school in my local area offering a 3 year diploma in product design so I'm wondering if its worth it? The program's entire cost is about $10k usd which seems reasonable..

    • @JimmyHuynhdesign
      @JimmyHuynhdesign  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Zef, seems like you're on the right track man. Totally possible for you to learn the skills on your own but i would only recommend this path to those that i think can actually learn it. If you can pick up some soildworks skills and begin modeling your concepts, you'll be about 70% there. As far as diploma goes, many large companies will require a degree, so you'll be limited to freelance jobs and smaller start up companies that will hire you. If you can prove through a portfoilo (a body of work) that you have skills of 3D modeling your ideas, rendering, and have aesthetic appeal, you'll have the core skills of an industrial designer.

    Jimmy, I’ve got a question regarding lettering-looks like most of that information on the page at 2:35 is related to the class you were in. What information should I get in the habit of writing down?
    Also, what’s the significance of the square on the right with the 3?

    • @JimmyHuynhdesign
      @JimmyHuynhdesign  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lettering the right way is a lot of work to do on a normal basis. What ends up happening is you eventually begin changing the "Proper" way and merging it with your own handwriting. But all you really gotta do is just write in upper case. That section is called a "title block" which includes information about the project. In that case, the 3 stood for the 3rd project.

    • @jwbrobst
      @jwbrobst 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jimmy Huynh thanks for the reply man! I'm making a 'series' of digital sketchpads that bring the concept of field notes and sketchbooks in general to the iPad pro and one of the templates I'm making is geared towards ID. Would love to know what besides titling and date you would say is universal for this practice.

    This is exactly why I’m choosing not to apply to CSULB. I went to check out the program, 5/6 Years for a bachelors is not ideal. I this was my school of choice but after checking out CSUSJ and SF. Those seem to be far more progressive. Not to mention they have internships available. I’m very grateful for your video Jimmy, they are extremely helpful.

    • @JimmyHuynhdesign

      So far CSULB has shorted the program to 4 years which is good. Going to a good school isn't everything, you always need to do your own personal learning on the side. Which is exactly why all you super stars are watching these videos!
