Surface Laptop Studio 2 - Performance and Throttling Tests on AC & USB-C

  • It's Surface Season again, and this time on the test bench we have the Surface Laptop Studio 2. Let's find out how many watts it can sustain on my RTX 4060 model as the amount of power it can pull will be a good judge of performance.
    Timespy
    Overall: 9997
    GPU: 9702
    CPU: 12086
    Cinebench 2024
    GPU: 10122
    CPU Multi: 807
I don't think the tent mode will help much for these particular tests because the CPU limits out at 50W after 28 seconds and the GPU is limited to 80W max no matter what.
It's the combined workload or "Total System Power" That gets boosted when in tent mode, rather than the dynamics of the CPU or GPU alone. Since these tests seem to hit the CPU and GPU separately, the performance boost of being in Studio/Tent mode won't be expressed, as you only see it when using CPU & GPU at the same time.

OMG, a good start! I’d love to hear about performance in Returnal, Cyberpunk, Portal RTX, and Ratchet & Clank in their Ultra RT modes with DLSS3 frame generation turned on, in both DLSS Quality and Performance modes. Sounds like only tent mode with the large power brick is required for that kind of benchmarking ?

Great video! I cannot wait to get mine delivered. I really hope thet the thermal throttling in laptop mode will get better with a software update or something because the temperature got pretty low at times and it still did not pull more power.

Appreciate this. Would love to see more details about the CPU tests/timing much like you did for GPU. Does it throttle nearly immediately? If we only have access to a decent CPU for a short burst, then this is definitely not the creative productivity machine for me. Also curious if all that noise in the video was from SLS2 fan? At which stage did that kick in and be one so loud?

    • @mubute

Went and watched it again and missed you saying “when GPU is not used”. So that makes a lot more sense 😊 Was a Little confused by the fan noise and assumed the machine was still running GPU tests or at least was still hot from that. Still not sure when “kinda throttled” kicks but this was a helpful test for sure! My work is primarily audio where load is fairly steady due to processing real-time audio streams. So I’m always interested in how much of the CPU a thermal design actually lets me use before throttling. Short bursts aren’t as useful for getting me through a work day unfortunately.

Very good insights. Thanks a lot! :-) I wonder if a fake tent mode (pulling the bottom of the screen just 1-2 cm off) would do the trick or if the system requires the full tent mode.

-Wondering how it performs when laid flat in "studio mode" or even with the screen flipped to the backside. These are the two modes I'd use most for creative work and need it to still be able to use its power.
-Also wondering if this has enough power for 3d modeling and also architectural programs.
-How does it perform in gaming with various popular titles? FPS?
-Really curious if this covers my uses so I can get out of the quagmire deciding between this and a ASUS ROG Flow x16 with its 4070. Seen that the x16's pen isn't great with its dated MPP. Is the SLS 2 good enough power-wise to where I can forget about the x16 and its sh!++y pen?
    Thank you :)

Of-course its powerful enough to do pretty much whatever you want as long as you get it with the 4060GPU. With that GPU it's by far more than capable of doing all task fast and on point as long as you keep it plugged in. That's the catch.

Hey I’d really love to see your review on the upcoming legion go! I recently returned my Asus z13 due to the stuttering and heat. If you think about it the legion go is basically a smaller surface pro when you take off the controllers except with a much better price and performance. But the battery life probably won’t be good on the legion go. It’s just unfortunate that they don’t have an option to buy an attachable keyboard.

@@silverpro8356 I did. I returned it back in July after using it for 2 months because I had the Best Buy membership. I was trying to convince myself it was still okay. But I eventually came to terms that for about $2000 I shouldn’t keep something I’m not completely happy with. It’s possible Asus could’ve fixed the stuttering but I’m not sure how they could since it is severely power limited. Why they decided to go with Intel when they know they’re restricted to 130w, I have no idea. The gpu is great, but it’s the fact they went with a power hungry Intel chip is what killed it. It did constant micro stutters. It doesn’t show up on TH-cam video benchmarks, or when you look at your fps monitor. The screen just stutters and makes the 140 fps you’re getting look terrible. Please look it up to back up what I’m saying. I did and found out it was also a problem on the last year model (probably even worse since that only had a 100w charger).

Going from only 50W power draw to over 100W is a massive difference in performance and given that for a lot of intensive tasks I would like to use the keyboard I don't think I would mind it feeling a little hot for that extra juice.

about the only conclusion I can take from this, is don't go back and forth between tent and laptop mode. Obviously when you go to Tent mode, then back, the unit is trying to cool itself down. You need to do a test where you leave it alone for 10 mins , then let it sit off for an hour and repeat for tent mode for 10 mins

It's hard to rely on other people's opinion because it's just that, their opinion and at times bias. I would suggest looking at technical reviews of similar spec devices to give you an idea.
Pay attention to the specs. For the type of work you do you'll want something with one of the dedicated gpu configurations not the integrated only configuration. If battery life is important to you than that's where a mac has the advantage. Remember it's about what works for your use case and be sure to do some research.

The macbook pro provides full power on battery, if you do heavy work on the Studio 2 you get 1 hour of battery life when the macbook would give you at least 4-5. Plus the mac will work exactly the same while the studio 2 will slow down a lot on battery.
