Brilliant. Of course, I never had it this good. Only the 8-bit Game Gear version for me. I do now have this on a Sega collection on the PS2, but still haven't found time to play it!
The ending could have been more elaborate, especially getting all the emeralds. It seems like they were too lazy to make a decent ending, or they didn't have time. But it's one of the few positive points. Sonic 1 is a classic.
I remember the game coming with the console at the time I bought it....also bought Streets of Rage 2, Columns, and something else in which I can't remember what.

I had this game when I was a boy in the beautiful blessed 90s after this day I can always get past the first level but I can never get past the second one I have the Sonic ultimate Sega Genesis collection and I can always get past the first level I just was never ever get past the second one
