My old Brooklyn Polish neighborhood used to have a lot of them--so much good food!--but then gentrification came along and a lot of them got pushed out. It was sad. There is still a few, but no where what it was like when I first moved there.
@@ceahorse56yes, they are becoming fewer and fewer. Small supermarkets open and sell all the produce that the little shops sell. Or even worse big supermarkets out of town open up. My own village has only one store now, general grocery with fewer choices. For choice we have to drive to the big supermarket.

During the war, my mum has told me they used to receive care parcels from family in Canada - letters, clothes, ribbons etc - her aunt would also fold what we now know as tea bags into the layers within the parcel. Mum told me that they didn’t know what to do with a teabag - they used to snip them open and empty them into the tea caddy.
My parents (both children of immigrants) used to send food parcels from the US during and after the war to family in Scotland and Ireland. I recall Mother telling how very hungry some elderly aunts in Aberdeen were at the time.
Hey to anyone who is interested in some more cozy, Wales-based content there is a series called Tales From The Green Valley that was aired in the 00s. Some historians lived in an old Welsh farmhouse for a year in the same way people would have lived in the 1600s. It was such a lovely show and showed a lot of beautiful Wales and the practical aspects of farming at the time.

It is always instructive and interesting to see people all over the world who live alone and what their daily life is like. Your TH-cam channel is very interesting because, above all, of its great simplicity..... Speaking about tea, I have been a tea drinker since childhood, at our house, we very rarely drank coffee.... I enjoy tea in both forms, either leaf or bag... my favorite brand of tea, both leaf and bag is "King Cole" strong tea... I have a cup of one liter capacity, which I drink some hot in the morning for breakfast, and sip the rest throughout the day....Have a wonderful week-end .... :-)

Agree. I've two local shopping streets about 15 minutes away in different directions. One is really struggling & looks tired & run down with some empty shops. 2nd place seems to be doing OK thank goodness & has a nice mix of shops. If shops closed down in the 2nd place the nearby MP is fairly passionate about the area, so I'd b writing to say 'keep our banks and keep our shops' if it took a downward projectors any time soon. Seems short sighted that commercial landlords put rents up but when shops give up & shut, often that unit sits empty so the greed of some landlords then backfires. Reasonable rents are needed to allow shops/ communities to thrive & compete against the online drive. I follow a TH-cam channel - where Wendall travels around British towns/Cities & he reports on the decline of local 'community warmth' once shops shut their doors in unison (or there's a loss of the varied mix of shops open).

Just loved your trip to Treorchy with all the high street shops. So much nicer popping in and getting your food rather than a supermarket. Healthier too, and you get to meet local people doing the same. Obviously, a cup of tea is very important! My daughter and I (she’s disabled and lives with me) are going the loose tea route. We have got a glass teapot with an infuser inside so we can tell when the tea has infused to a nice strength. Yummy! Bye for now.
Nice to see an active high street.Sidolis cafe I recognised it before you mentioned its name..its got the same layout as the one we used to have in our local market town, renowned for it fresh cream cakes,Its now run by someone else under another name but still the same layout..its been there for as long as I can recall,used to be me and my friends go to place on a Saturday afternoon when we were in our mid teens and I'm the wrong side of 65 now.Your videos are making me feel nostalgic it's lovely to remember the less frenetic times of life..Love your cosy corner,very homely.

I think your Cawl , not sure how to spell it, is healthy food , dieting is overrated portion control is better, and eating fruit , vegetables some meat and fish, leave off on pastry’s cakes and biscuits and keep walking and once your out gardening the weight will drop off. I love that way of shopping , the green grocer and butcher , choose how much you want not all bundled up in plastic bags so you buy twice as much as you need, loved seeing the high street not many of those left now. Thanks for sharing your adventures. Glad to see you have an electric kettle now much cheaper to use than an electric ring on the cooker. ❤️
I can't express how much I loved this post. Wish I lived in a place like that. Heaven. 1Tbls of cornflour mixed in with 3 tablespoons of cold water and poured in whilst stirring quickly might be your more keto friendly thickener, cus you'll use less and it's easy peasy.❤

The cawl looks really tasty 😋. Where I live a little village called Crynant one's we had everything even a cinema now one corner shop with post office one chemist and a fish shop. And six miles to my town called Neath.Barclays banks are closing in our town and also I have heard that the post office is closing as well . The government is trying to push us all to go cashless. I am not happy with this at all.
Agree. In Canada same thing. Banks, ATMS, Post Offices all closing. WEF is forcing Central Bank Digital Currency on the world....cashless society so they can control us . We must fight back for our way of life. Saddened Brit.

My memories centre on Carpaninini's cafe in High Street, Treorchy ; circa 1960. I lived just 50 yards away, and passed it most days. The "Bracchis" were an institution which transcended nationality, background and religion. Wish that it were so now!

Shopping the way it used to be. No supermarkets. As an old singleton with a couple of mates in the same boat we have a cooked breakfast every Friday and bemoan life and when we were young we talked about girls, motorbikes and cars! Now it’s shopping😂and how hard it is as a single person because ina supermarket difficult to buy small amounts of price or single items like onions, chops,apples, potatoes. No little shops by me. As an aside Seani am 65 and I have had several health complaints and medication doing nothing. So I have adopted my own semi carnivore diet. Cutting sugar and very low carb. Done it since early December and although not perfect at 65 Ithink I feel much better and medication free. It’s amazing that buying meat doesn’t have to be expensive. My air fryer is king for a single man. I eat 4 eggs a day too. The one thing I have noticed is I have lost a stone but the body transformation is quite remarkable. Belly almost gone. I just look my old shape. People have noticed. So I am going to continue not with a fixed carnivore diet but my own version. V little sugar, low carbs, high protein and just because of hassle of buying not much veg. Toilet habits have been improved. Still have treats like a beer for my birthday, cooked breakfast every Friday but no bread. The one thing I have done is cut out all seed oils and margarine. Fry eggs in butter, animal fat all the time, goes against all medics say. However my parents died last year at 95. Only ate butter, wedges cheese and all the animal fat they could. They both died of “old age” the hearts and cancer not present. It goes against the grain but I am now eating all animal related products. Taking vit b supplements. Whichever works for us eh. I am going back to loose tea after this😂agin single - t bags easy. As well as an air fryer I have a slow cooker cost same as a light bulb, much cheaper than your cooker mate. £30.
I enjoy your episodes, Sean, regardless of what you are doing. I am doing Keto, so my ears perk up when you mention that. The Cawl looks good. I think if you substitute maybe cauliflower for the potatoes, it would be a keto stew, for now. Once the weight is where you want it, you can go and add the higher glycemic veggies in, and see how it goes. Your hikes and walks are so interesting to me, from Oregon. Your cats are sweet-does one have green eyes, and the other gold? It is your personality, and way of enjoying your life that I find compelling. I am looking forward to seeing your back garden area, and what you end up doing with that.

Just found your videos and have really enjoyed your company about the house and garden, I agree that is better than an allotment, so many of those. When making cowl if you dust the meat in flour before browning it’s much thicker, also adding mint to the dish takes away the lovely lamb taste. Im old school & love to see people shop like this, how it was in the old days when i was growing up. Loved seeing the butchers & the cafe etc, what a great price for the breakfast Sean👍Lovely to see the butcher & yourself chatting & he remembered you from school too❤ These trendy diets, even though i know they work are definitely NOT a one size fits all. You have a very serious health condition to manage too. I have tried them all over the last 20 years & i can categorically state that the only one that is workable for me is my own version. I keep my carbs under 100, usually between 50 & 80g a day which is classed as low carb but i can still eat lovely stew or cawl which is a super healthy meal, am i the only one who is worried about you giving up vegatables etc My nurse recently told me she is super proud that i have managed to get my blood sugars down & keep them down for 4/5 years now & i dont feel deprived of anything at all. So there is a way of eating well without going extreme anything. PLEASE remember Sean, your happiness & well being are SO IMPORTANT. Will going on an extreme diet affect your mental well-being? just as you are getting settled. Im ten years older than you & i want to enjoy life itself without a "diet" being in control of my days, weeks, months. Just be kind to yourself my lovely, you seem like such a lovely person. I dont know how you cope with so much differing advice from all angles, all well intentioned im sure. The older i get the more i realise that i am most comfortable with a good joint of meat, that lasts days, make meals & butties with it, lots of lovely veg, nice gravy, good cooked breakfast & using low carb bread & pasta, oh & tins of tuna & eggs for omelettes etc. I know Keto works for almost everyone & if you can cope with giving up your lovely cawl etc then good luck to you but just stay happy & dont forget to take into account the effect on your ME too my lovely. I know personally, the more veg i eat the better my MS is & if i go a week or so without oh boy do i suffer. Your needs are individual to you, its you that has CFS & i know that is an incredibly difficult thing to live with & manage. YOU are the manager. I hope i dont sound bossy🥴Only wish the best for you cariad🙏 Annie 🏴 Ooh i forgot to say, North Wales is due snow on Thursday, im not sure if you are getting it in the south ❄️⛄️
Real heart warming seeing the butchers the café etc in main street so much nicer than impersonal supermarkets i miss the corner shops. Passed my driving test in Treorchy for manual car as few years earlier had Automatic car so took that on my test in Swansea.
oh I was so sad to see the cafe had shut used to do fabulous steam pie I think the last time I was there was 2018 and I think he had the starting of Alzheimer’s I don’t expect his son wanted to take the cafe over what a shame he was a lovely man and the first cafe you when to they do do A lovely breakfast there and I think it was two brothers that I did in the end and one of them was named Johnny used to come round in the ice cream van specially on a Sunday they used to do lovely ice cream thank you very much for the video Christine NZ🌹
Thank you Sean for another lovely video. I live in the North East and my Mum used to make a similar stew but with the addition of barley. It was lovely to see a shop that sells small amouts particular of spices. My Dad would only drink loose tea and he would joke that he was going to read them to see when we were going to win our fortune. Loved the historic portion of the video.

Breakfast was amazing for the price, the butchers and veg shop made me so nostalgic for how all high streets used to be, your local history and photos are so interesting, no need to diet fella, just good meat and 2 veg, eggs and butter, full fat milk, cake or pudding only at the weekend and a good walk a few times a week, just like the old days, your looking slimmer already, lots of love x

always drink loose leaf tea, so much better flavour plus tea bags have plastic in them otherwise the paper would dissolve (watched a TH-cam video on where they make teabags in the UK) introduce more vegies into your diet & have a few meatless meals, replace with pulses, you ever tried having rosemary with lamb? they do go hand in hand, you should try different herb flavours, many have different health properties am enjoying your slow living & am looking forward to seeing more gardening thanx for sharing your little town with us
Great video, I enjoy learning about the history of the area, thank you to the butchers and greengrocer for letting you film. I love watching a gentle lifestyle vlog. Tea chat! We use loose tea, it has increased health benefits and the flavour is different and often much better, even if it's from the supermarket (although we treat ourselves to a good blend from a specialist every now and then.) The Waitrose essentials loose tea used to be our economical favourite, but I think they've discontinued that. Tesco's Assam is nice, but their Finest loose tea is half the price and tastes fine! It's a case of trial and error and personal preference. We use a level teaspoon per person. It needs to brew for longer (we choose 6 minutes) so I recommend making it in your teapot with a tea cosy to keep the heat in, or if you're making it in a cup cover it with a small plate. 🫖🙂

I use cornflour to thicken stews Shaun. Comes in a small packet. Couple of heaped teaspoons mixed in half cup of water and stir in OK always works! Love the films. Keep going mate.

Add corn flour to thicken it. Mix a little with a small amount cold water in a cup (consistency of milk) and then add to your stew. Your butchers sold it on the back wall x
Apart from bank closing high street looks like It has everything u need just a tip you may know I do it with lob scouse when it's all cooked get a potatoe masher and gently press it into the stew to break up,the potatoes not mash them just squash them a bit it thickens it up nicely

I hope the keto diet goes well. I'm enjoying some of your videos and don't even live anywhere near Wales, althouh my mum came from Blaina and we usd to visit every year. The high street and cafe remind me so much of Blaina high street although that was 50 years ago. We used to go whimberry picking in the mountains to make tarts and had fresh eggs from the chickens in the back garden with gibbons and other salad veg grown there too. I also remember all the small shops in the front rooms of terraced homes selling sweets and pop and homegrown veg. All the shops were the friendly high street types like the butchers you visited. Its a shame the big supermarkets have closed so many high street shops as the community spirit and social good well feeling has gone in many araes. They even had a cafe in Blaina with the milk frothers and mable tables with the same interior as you went in. When my mum left home she went to work in an Italian owned cafe in Tenby, so the Italians appear to have made their mark in South Wales in the early -mid 1900's. My plan is to retire to South Wales at 67 in 5 years although I have no property or pension, just a bit I'm trying to save up to cover moving and setting up costs and a little for a rainy day. Maybe Haverford West or Pembroke Dock or Brigend. It's only a dream though.
Oh, my gosh, everything in your village is so very different than here in the beautiful Great Lakes region of the US, where I'm from. I grew up on a farm, outside a small village. Absolutely no busses, but everyone has a car. Every family have several cars and trucks. Every kid gets a used car the moment they get a driver's license on their 16th birthday. Now, I live in the city, and there are busses. No one I know has ever taken a bus. I'm not sure how to pay if I were to get on a bus. Only really poor people, and the unfortunates take the bus. I really like watching videos of life in Wales. I'm a Native of the "Motor City," so that explains the transportation difference.

I love your butcher's shop!! These shops are very like small neighborhoods in bigger cities in the U.S....where small neighborhoods still exist. The real and big difference, of course, is that, when you come out of your shop, you stand in pristine and uncrowded areas full of mountains, streams, and woods instead of endless block after block of further urbanization. I stopped drinking coffee last year (simply a change with age--love coffee!!) and substituted herbal teas. Since I live in a hot climate, I drink tons of iced herbal tea (+ water) for most of the year. Last year, I tried several methods of steeping. I have incredibly large strainers but find I like the medium unbleached tea bags because they're neater. I buy loose because I buy in bulk for cheaper cost. I also make a concoction of chaparral for each morning (liver cleanser) which is steeped simply loose in the jar but I dearly hate it since clean-up is a mess.
I use those big cardboard boxes for covering freshly prepared beds to avoid weeds before I have time to plant and mulch, or to kill off weedy soil (as in no dig) but remove the cardboard and add a smaller amount of compost to the original soil. Cheaper than no dig if you don't have vast amounts of compost and nicer than black plastic or weedmat. Throw out? No way. The house is looking very cosy.
That snug would make a lovely crochet corner! I love it. I got a floor standing daylight lamp for my crochet and recommend it! I can crochet no matter the weather. Today it's poor daylight but I can crochet away!
Do love a cuppa x I've bought darjelling no need for milk or sugar x can't get used to green tea, however, Waitrose have nettle, few healthy tea bags I like the taste of God bless ❤️

I grew up on loose tea with a pot/strainer in the 60s i remember my grandad pouring it from the pot into a mug from a great height to make bubbles in the mug he made a great cuppa! 'ere dad do you know the pianos on my foot, no son, you hum it and i'll play it :)
Thank you for the lovely video. Another way to get a thicker consistency when no flour is around (or someone can’t eat wheat) is take a little of the cooked potato and smush it completely and stir it in.

When my son was in Sri Lanka he visited a tea plantation and they told him that the tea in tea bags is very low quality. Pretty much sweepings from the floor😱. Stick to the leaves. We’re also low carb/keto. Works well for us and we’re in our eighties.

If shops closed down in the 2nd place the nearby MP is fairly passionate about the area, so I'd b writing to say 'keep our banks and keep our shops' if it took a downward projectors any time soon. Seems short sighted that commercial landlords put rents up but when shops give up & shut, often that unit sits empty so the greed of some landlords then backfires. Reasonable rents are needed to allow shops/ communities to thrive & compete against the online drive. I follow a TH-cam channel - where Wendall travels around British towns/Cities & he reports on the decline of local 'community warmth' once shops shut their doors in unison (or there's a loss of the varied mix of shops open).

Just loved your trip to Treorchy with all the high street shops. So much nicer popping in and getting your food rather than a supermarket. Healthier too, and you get to meet local people doing the same. Obviously, a cup of tea is very important! My daughter and I (she’s disabled and lives with me) are going the loose tea route. We have got a glass teapot with an infuser inside so we can tell when the tea has infused to a nice strength. Yummy! Bye for now.

Nice to see an active high street.Sidolis cafe I recognised it before you mentioned its name..its got the same layout as the one we used to have in our local market town, renowned for it fresh cream cakes,Its now run by someone else under another name but still the same layout..its been there for as long as I can recall,used to be me and my friends go to place on a Saturday afternoon when we were in our mid teens and I'm the wrong side of 65 now.Your videos are making me feel nostalgic it's lovely to remember the less frenetic times of life..Love your cosy corner,very homely.

I think your Cawl , not sure how to spell it, is healthy food , dieting is overrated portion control is better, and eating fruit , vegetables some meat and fish, leave off on pastry’s cakes and biscuits and keep walking and once your out gardening the weight will drop off. I love that way of shopping , the green grocer and butcher , choose how much you want not all bundled up in plastic bags so you buy twice as much as you need, loved seeing the high street not many of those left now. Thanks for sharing your adventures. Glad to see you have an electric kettle now much cheaper to use than an electric ring on the cooker. ❤️

1Tbls of cornflour mixed in with 3 tablespoons of cold water and poured in whilst stirring quickly might be your more keto friendly thickener, cus you'll use less and it's easy peasy.❤

The cawl looks really tasty 😋. Where I live a little village called Crynant one's we had everything even a cinema now one corner shop with post office one chemist and a fish shop. And six miles to my town called Neath.Barclays banks are closing in our town and also I have heard that the post office is closing as well . The government is trying to push us all to go cashless. I am not happy with this at all.
Agree. In Canada same thing. Banks, ATMS, Post Offices all closing. WEF is forcing Central Bank Digital Currency on the world....cashless society so they can control us . We must fight back for our way of life. Saddened Brit.

My memories centre on Carpaninini's cafe in High Street, Treorchy ; circa 1960. I lived just 50 yards away, and passed it most days. The "Bracchis" were an institution which transcended nationality, background and religion. Wish that it were so now!
My father used to work for Sidolis ice cream and they were based in Ebbw Vale many years ago!

Shopping the way it used to be. No supermarkets. As an old singleton with a couple of mates in the same boat we have a cooked breakfast every Friday and bemoan life and when we were young we talked about girls, motorbikes and cars! Now it’s shopping😂and how hard it is as a single person because ina supermarket difficult to buy small amounts of price or single items like onions, chops,apples, potatoes. No little shops by me. As an aside Seani am 65 and I have had several health complaints and medication doing nothing. So I have adopted my own semi carnivore diet. Cutting sugar and very low carb. Done it since early December and although not perfect at 65 Ithink I feel much better and medication free. It’s amazing that buying meat doesn’t have to be expensive. My air fryer is king for a single man. I eat 4 eggs a day too. The one thing I have noticed is I have lost a stone but the body transformation is quite remarkable. Belly almost gone. I just look my old shape. People have noticed. So I am going to continue not with a fixed carnivore diet but my own version. V little sugar, low carbs, high protein and just because of hassle of buying not much veg. Toilet habits have been improved. Still have treats like a beer for my birthday, cooked breakfast every Friday but no bread. The one thing I have done is cut out all seed oils and margarine. Fry eggs in butter, animal fat all the time, goes against all medics say. However my parents died last year at 95. Only ate butter, wedges cheese and all the animal fat they could. They both died of “old age” the hearts and cancer not present. It goes against the grain but I am now eating all animal related products. Taking vit b supplements. Whichever works for us eh. I am going back to loose tea after this😂agin single - t bags easy. As well as an air fryer I have a slow cooker cost same as a light bulb, much cheaper than your cooker mate. £30.

I think if you substitute maybe cauliflower for the potatoes, it would be a keto stew, for now. Once the weight is where you want it, you can go and add the higher glycemic veggies in, and see how it goes. Your hikes and walks are so interesting to me, from Oregon. Your cats are sweet-does one have green eyes, and the other gold? It is your personality, and way of enjoying your life that I find compelling. I am looking forward to seeing your back garden area, and what you end up doing with that.

Just found your videos and have really enjoyed your company about the house and garden, I agree that is better than an allotment, so many of those. When making cowl if you dust the meat in flour before browning it’s much thicker, also adding mint to the dish takes away the lovely lamb taste. Im old school & love to see people shop like this, how it was in the old days when i was growing up. These trendy diets, even though i know they work are definitely NOT a one size fits all. You have a very serious health condition to manage too. I have tried them all over the last 20 years & i can categorically state that the only one that is workable for me is my own version. I keep my carbs under 100, usually between 50 & 80g a day which is classed as low carb but i can still eat lovely stew or cawl which is a super healthy meal, am i the only one who is worried about you giving up vegatables etc My nurse recently told me she is super proud that i have managed to get my blood sugars down & keep them down for 4/5 years now & i dont feel deprived of anything at all. So there is a way of eating well without going extreme anything. PLEASE remember Sean, your happiness & well being are SO IMPORTANT. Will going on an extreme diet affect your mental well-being? just as you are getting settled. Im ten years older than you & i want to enjoy life itself without a "diet" being in control of my days, weeks, months. Just be kind to yourself my lovely, you seem like such a lovely person. I dont know how you cope with so much differing advice from all angles, all well intentioned im sure. The older i get the more i realise that i am most comfortable with a good joint of meat, that lasts days, make meals & butties with it, lots of lovely veg, nice gravy, good cooked breakfast & using low carb bread & pasta, oh & tins of tuna & eggs for omelettes etc. I know Keto works for almost everyone & if you can cope with giving up your lovely cawl etc then good luck to you but just stay happy & dont forget to take into account the effect on your ME too my lovely. I know personally, the more veg i eat the better my MS is & if i go a week or so without oh boy do i suffer. Your needs are individual to you, its you that has CFS & i know that is an incredibly difficult thing to live with & manage. YOU are the manager. I hope i dont sound bossy🥴Only wish the best for you cariad🙏 Annie 🏴 Ooh i forgot to say, North Wales is due snow on Thursday, im not sure if you are getting it in the south ❄️⛄️

Real heart warming seeing the butchers the café etc in main street so much nicer than impersonal supermarkets i miss the corner shops. Passed my driving test in Treorchy for manual car as few years earlier had Automatic car so took that on my test in Swansea.

oh I was so sad to see the cafe had shut used to do fabulous steam pie I think the last time I was there was 2018 and I think he had the starting of Alzheimer’s I don’t expect his son wanted to take the cafe over what a shame he was a lovely man and the first cafe you when to they do do A lovely breakfast there and I think it was two brothers that I did in the end and one of them was named Johnny used to come round in the ice cream van specially on a Sunday they used to do lovely ice cream thank you very much for the video Christine NZ🌹
Thank you Sean for another lovely video. I live in the North East and my Mum used to make a similar stew but with the addition of barley. It was lovely to see a shop that sells small amouts particular of spices. My Dad would only drink loose tea and he would joke that he was going to read them to see when we were going to win our fortune. Loved the historic portion of the video.

I often use loose tea, being alone i find it a waste using a teabag to make 1 cup of tea. Scottish blend or tetley tea bag makes two cups 😮😂😂e

always drink loose leaf tea, so much better flavour plus tea bags have plastic in them otherwise the paper would dissolve (watched a TH-cam video on where they make teabags in the UK)
introduce more vegies into your diet & have a few meatless meals, replace with pulses,
you ever tried having rosemary with lamb? they do go hand in hand, you should try different herb flavours, many have different health properties

We use loose tea, it has increased health benefits and the flavour is different and often much better, even if it's from the supermarket (although we treat ourselves to a good blend from a specialist every now and then.)
The Waitrose essentials loose tea used to be our economical favourite, but I think they've discontinued that. Tesco's Assam is nice, but their Finest loose tea is half the price and tastes fine!
It's a case of trial and error and personal preference.
We use a level teaspoon per person. It needs to brew for longer (we choose 6 minutes) so I recommend making it in your teapot with a tea cosy to keep the heat in, or if you're making it in a cup cover it with a small plate. 🫖🙂

I use cornflour to thicken stews Shaun. Comes in a small packet. Couple of heaped teaspoons mixed in half cup of water and stir in OK always works! Love the films. Keep going mate.

Add corn flour to thicken it. Mix a little with a small amount cold water in a cup (consistency of milk) and then add to your stew. Your butchers sold it on the back wall x

Apart from bank closing high street looks like It has everything u need just a tip you may know I do it with lob scouse when it's all cooked get a potatoe masher and gently press it into the stew to break up,the potatoes not mash them just squash them a bit it thickens it up nicely

I hope the keto diet goes well. I'm enjoying some of your videos and don't even live anywhere near Wales, althouh my mum came from Blaina and we usd to visit every year. The high street and cafe remind me so much of Blaina high street although that was 50 years ago. We used to go whimberry picking in the mountains to make tarts and had fresh eggs from the chickens in the back garden with gibbons and other salad veg grown there too. I also remember all the small shops in the front rooms of terraced homes selling sweets and pop and homegrown veg. All the shops were the friendly high street types like the butchers you visited. Its a shame the big supermarkets have closed so many high street shops as the community spirit and social good well feeling has gone in many araes. They even had a cafe in Blaina with the milk frothers and mable tables with the same interior as you went in. When my mum left home she went to work in an Italian owned cafe in Tenby, so the Italians appear to have made their mark in South Wales in the early -mid 1900's. My plan is to retire to South Wales at 67 in 5 years although I have no property or pension, just a bit I'm trying to save up to cover moving and setting up costs and a little for a rainy day. Maybe Haverford West or Pembroke Dock or Brigend. It's only a dream though.

Oh, my gosh, everything in your village is so very different than here in the beautiful Great Lakes region of the US, where I'm from. I grew up on a farm, outside a small village. Absolutely no busses, but everyone has a car. Every family have several cars and trucks. Every kid gets a used car the moment they get a driver's license on their 16th birthday. Now, I live in the city, and there are busses. No one I know has ever taken a bus. I'm not sure how to pay if I were to get on a bus. Only really poor people, and the unfortunates take the bus. I really like watching videos of life in Wales. I'm a Native of the "Motor City," so that explains the transportation difference.

I love the atmosphere of the shops, nothing like that in this town.
I love your butcher's shop!! These shops are very like small neighborhoods in bigger cities in the U.S....where small neighborhoods still exist. The real and big difference, of course, is that, when you come out of your shop, you stand in pristine and uncrowded areas full of mountains, streams, and woods instead of endless block after block of further urbanization. I stopped drinking coffee last year (simply a change with age--love coffee!!) and substituted herbal teas. Since I live in a hot climate, I drink tons of iced herbal tea (+ water) for most of the year. Last year, I tried several methods of steeping. I have incredibly large strainers but find I like the medium unbleached tea bags because they're neater. I buy loose because I buy in bulk for cheaper cost. I also make a concoction of chaparral for each morning (liver cleanser) which is steeped simply loose in the jar but I dearly hate it since clean-up is a mess.
You can’t beat tea leaves they make a great brew. I put one and a half teaspoons in of Yorkshire tea leaves in, simply devine !!
I use those big cardboard boxes for covering freshly prepared beds to avoid weeds before I have time to plant and mulch, or to kill off weedy soil (as in no dig) but remove the cardboard and add a smaller amount of compost to the original soil. Cheaper than no dig if you don't have vast amounts of compost and nicer than black plastic or weedmat. Throw out? No way. The house is looking very cosy.
A teabag in a cup is not real tea. Loose tea is the only way to make a proper cup of tea, nothing like it. Love the show.😊 15:34

I grew up on loose tea with a pot/strainer in the 60s i remember my grandad pouring it from the pot into a mug from a great height to make bubbles in the mug he made a great cuppa! 'ere dad do you know the pianos on my foot, no son, you hum it and i'll play it :)
Thank you for the lovely video. Another way to get a thicker consistency when no flour is around (or someone can’t eat wheat) is take a little of the cooked potato and smush it completely and stir it in.

Hello from Las Vegas. Enjoy your videos. We’ve been using loose tea for years. Ceylon OPA. Very good. When my son was in Sri Lanka he visited a tea plantation and they told him that the tea in tea bags is very low quality. Pretty much sweepings from the floor😱. Stick to the leaves. We’re also low carb/keto. Works well for us and we’re in our eighties.
In my wee town the banks have all gone and we're left with the cashpoints... Its quite a cashless society our wee town.
