Everyone seems to misunderstand what a political party is. It is a private organization of supposedly like minded individuals who pool their resources in order to support candidates in elections. They do not have to choose a candidate by what would be generally regarded as a democratic process. The primaries (which were originally referred to as “presidential preference primaries”) were simply a way in which the party honchos could get a sense of the electorate’s sentiment. The actual process of nominating a candidate was relegated to the smoke filled rooms . While this may seem totally undemocratic, I’m not sure that it actually wasn’t a better way for the political parties to function. The alternative that we see today is where the primaries function as a tournament to determine the nominee. This results in the nominee chosen by a small number of voters who in the case of an open primary are not even members of the party.
This process will be tough but this correction is necessary. The president has been using a teleprompter since last week and has had a few rallies since then. I don't think he can really campaign.
What happened with LBJ was also different because IIRC, he never actually declared a reelection bid before bowing out. He was on primary ballots because it was assumed he would run again, not because he said so. And in any case, he would've almost certainly been renominated if he had run because in those days, the primaries were just popularity contests. And he would've lost the general election with almost as much certainty.

Democrats cry when they don't get their way. The Supreme Court is supposed to be apolitical. The Democrats are done...and Trump is going to walk right back into office. Why would they need to replace Trump? Love him or hate him, he's going back to the Oval Office.
