This review of the SC2 SmartCarb is fair and well done. The defect at issue was a compromised needle seat o-ring that was torn during the assembly process - a quality control failure. Speaking for TE we regret the trouble that it caused, especially during a highly anticipated trip like this where it should have worked flawlessly. We've taken necessary steps to ensure this type of issue doesn't happen again. Your obvious commitment to providing candid and honest feedback both to us and to your followers is appreciable. Had the same problem with a bad needle and seat in a lectron in my buddies bike as soon as we got to California this winter from Colorado. Sucks when you travel that long and have to fight s bike that don't run right. In my case, my smartcarb ran great though.
Not good news for me.. I have a SC2 in a box waiting to be installed. I appreciate your honest opinion. Its alot of money to spend not to be fully satisfied.

I will be purchasing a smart carb 2 for my 2011 KTM 300xc for sure. I love their on the fly adjustability + no worries dumping too much fuel on the ground.
That's a bummer, the version 1 I have ( same carb you tested ) was rich out of the box, had to lean it 4 clicks and running great currently, will see what happens soon as the snow is gone and up the mountain I'll go.
I just received my SC2 last weekend right before my double header endurocross race and my carb was lean the bike would hang high idle. I've continued to work with TE and since sent it back for inspection. I totally understand your frustration. It pretty much cost me a full weekend of racing. I had no bottom end. Bike ran Amazing up top. Not really ideal for a soaking wet endurocross race. I hope they can remedy the situation quickly
@@PNWEnduro I am really hoping that the carb works again for you. I love the idea of the bike running super clean. But I am suspicious as well. I was really hoping to find something to share with my friends that was a great solution to the stock Carburetor on our KTM/HUSKYs. I'll remain positive and see if they can get mine to run as advertised when I get it back.
I've got the version 1 being shipped tomorrow from Dan Boettger Racing.. I hope I dont have any issues..I used your other video with lectron, mikuni and smart to make the decision. The major reason is fuel economy.. At the price of gas at the moment, if it performs well, it will pay for itself after a few seasons.
I notice the decel ding on the Lectron... I get the same thing. Have you fiddled with different metering rods at all? I haven't, but I've adjusted the stock rod richer and leaner, and when the bike performs best, I still have the ding. . Maybe it doesn't matter, I've just always thought it was a weird behavior.
My Lectron came with a 4-2m rod. When they rebuilt it for me they put in a 4-2 which is slightly richer. I did not notice a difference though. Now the Lectron is back on I had to go 1/4 turn leaner so get better throttle response.
I have the Lectron on a 2018 KTM 300 XCW. Haven’t touched it except adjust idle slightly. I run the Amsoil Saber 80:1. Getting a lot drool, blubbery idle to 1/4 throttle, decel ding and slightly hard to start when warm. Stock plug is black. Riding Oregon trails 1300-3600 elevations temps 50-70 degree. I’m thinking the metering rod needs to be leaned out, unless there’s a better metering rod for my riding areas?
Mike Rasmussen I had to lean out the metering rod 1/2 turn and turn up idle on my lectron. Recently started drooling more. Turned out to be crank seal leaking a little. Back to normal now. Throw away the fuel line they give you and careful with the gasket when you adjust the metering rod. Other than that no issues
Was this problem accompanied by difficulties in starting the bike? I have a similar problem, in the beginning I thought about the altitude in the mountains, until I put a standard carburetor and compared. One day the bike starts up normally, the other just stops starting at an altitude of 2000 meters or there is very poor traction and detonation, as if it suffocates. That being said, clicks aren't particularly helpful. I have already checked everything a dozen times and re-read the instructions. I'm tired of just looking for a problem. I honestly don't know what to do. Problem with O-ring or needle. I am in another country and this is a big problem, we only have a few Smartcarb for Sherco. Smartcarb support has been silent since last week.
Yes, it did have difficulty starting. Make sure you have done the trim on the air boot and intake flange on your Sherco to run the SC2. Elevation changes should not affect this carb. Also make sure you have the correct metering rod in the carb.
My lectron ran like this which it then fouled the plug, sad to say I didn’t get to finish the Desert 100 I went about 60 miles. After talking with lectron and digging deeper into it the problem was the vent tubes on the bottom of the carburetor where plugged.
I wanna see you run thay thing wide open when you get it back, I bought a 38mm cast for my 2018 250xc after your fist review and it would not run more than a couple seconds at wide open throttle. Even after working with TE, trying a richer rod, and sending it back and having it inspected it still would not run wide open. It was good till about 80% throttle then completely bogged out lean. A hand full of other users have had the same issue. I can say TE was good to work with and bought it back in the end.
While I want smart carb to succeed and I think they largely have, I love my lectron and have only ever had to adjust the idle. That’s a lot to say given it’s on a 125 that’s trail ridden in the Appalachian Moutain from Tennessee up to West Virginia. We have notoriously bad air quality. My average elevation in 1500 to 3000ft but even at 1500ft the da is 3000..... My ancient Mikuni was just a gigantic pain in the butt.
I had to return mine also. The carb really didn’t fit right (had to remove reed valve spacer) with a 1mm larger diameter spring on the rear damper. Then the TPS didn’t work at all. Disappointed since I had good results with my very early original- although since it was an early one, it took some fettling to get right.
Been watching ur videos and was wondering what psi and compression and rebound settings are you running in your air forks? Looks like in the north west mountains the terrain is pretty rough. I appreciate your honesty on the SmartCarb/2. I will probably still buy one and hopefully they will have addressed the quality control on the o-rings. I wonder if the seals can be serviced?
@KTM Trailrider My forks have been re-valved for my weight and also have the SKF glide kit installed. I'm running 130 psi now, before the re-valve I was at 120 psi. I don't remember the clicker settings as I have not touched them since the re-valve. The air forks are so adjustable I don't think I will bother with re-valving on my next bike. Also the it's easy to change the oil on the air forks I do it every 40 hrs or so. Yes I believe all the o-rings and seals can be serviced on the SC.
Before I got to the end I was thinking an O-Ring seal had failed. Wonder if v1 is better? I was leaning towards a SC2 but now I may pull trigger for Lectron on 2018 XC.
The SC2 is better than the prior 4 generations of 36-40mm billet SmartCarbs in numerous ways including improved fitment, a wider variety of stock throttle cable acceptance, internal vent passage routing, tolerance, etc. The issue at hand with this particular unit was that the needle seat o-ring was torn during assembly at the factory and steps have been taken to ensure that it doesn't happen again.
If I was SmartCarb I would offer PNW another carb for a redo. Of course the true test will be hownir works at elevation. Riding between Texas and Colorado is the main reason to get one. If your 300 is running lean on top then there are a few things we can do. It's possible that the vent scoop is partially obstructed inside of the airboot, causing a lack of fuel driving force in the float bowl. Some airboots require the trim and if the scoop is blocked it can cause top end lean running. It's also possible that you may need a step richer rod to provide more fuel in the mid to top range. We'd be happy to discuss your setup and ensure you have the right rod installed. If the lean running happens after a sustained amount of WOT riding then we may also want to look at fuel tank venting and fuel flow into the carb and/or the float level being a little too low. Please reach out directly if you haven't already, we'd be happy to assist your tuning efforts to get the most out of your SmartCarb.
It was for two rides, carb ran a little rich and then got worse. As per TE it would have just continued to get worse if it I kept running it with the defect. Once I got it back from being repaired it ran flawless.

I am using the Tusk handguards. Chraper and stronger than the Cycra's I had before. These are the ones.... www.rockymountainatvmc.com/parts/tusk-d-flex-pro-handguards-p?PID=8340296&ref=cj&cjevent=5e2e0f547bce11e9816c00730a1c0e0e
Wellllll... crap. Could this have been a fuel issue?
Never mind, now I have seen the whole video and you answered that question. This is the first negative thing I have seen on the smart carb. I am seriously considering one but I am worried now.
@RacerRed, I'm told the issue has been fixed going forward. I should be getting the SC2 back in a week or so. I don't really like posting negative reviews but I felt to be fair to the viewers I should share my full experience with the product.
PNW Enduro awesome that this issue should be fixed, though. I am the same way about reviews. I only do positive ones for the most part because I only use stuff that works. This carb seems like a great option. I still think its the best on the market, as long as the issue is fixed
I'll just stay with my aftermarket mikuni flat slide 36.

Should never of left lectron.. those things are perfect 👌🤘💯 spend more money on the smart carb just for it to let you down and break... What a crock of shit!!!
Guess you did not watch the whole video or my other videos on the SC2 for that matter. The SC2 is a superior carb to the Lectron in my experience.
@@PNWEnduro na man I did I did. I just love mine and for that reason I'm loyal to it.. they are both super technology for the 2t engine . But I do love the fact that in reality you had to actually put the lectron back on for bike to enjoy your day . That for me sells it 😉😜🤘💨💨🖤
All good Gareth, I know the guys at Technology Elevated were pretty disappointed they sent me one with a fault, they did fix it for me though.
Not worth the money to begin with. Out of all the hard enduro riders out there please tell me how many use a different type of carb?? I’m pretty sure it’s either non( that I’ve heard of) or very little. As for the economy benefit I think you’d have to ride for bloody years and years to make up the initial outlay in dollars saved on fuel.
