      Nothing crazy about that, they milked 5 Online hard and still are, that's why it's taking so long, why waste millions on a new game when you can just milk 5 Online for everything it's worth. They were planning to make dlc for 5 like they did for 4 but since 5 Online is so successful they canceled it. What's ironic about all that is that in 2014, 5 Online was close to failing but then it really took off for some reason.

    The 90's LA area was also more smoggy than it is today, like really bad. It was probably added to help loading and RAM management honestly, but the LA area back then was simply more orange tinted than it is today, so it fits the timeline of the game.

    • @longlivetheking1065
      @longlivetheking1065 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Fellating R* hard with that take lol. Even if LA was foggy in the 90s and you couldn't see at times because of the massive amounts of orange fog, that would not be necessary to include anyways as San Andreas isn't even a real place. It's a fictional amalgamation of several American cities such as Las Vegas, San Francisco, and ofc Los Angeles. Also, that issue mainly is with the PS2 version of the game, and to prove my point further it is possible to replicate with mods but only those with nostalgia for the PS2 copy play with that mod.

    1:10:41 - fun fact: the Tanner character is actually a dig by Rockstar towards the Driver franchise, as they gave him a female walking animation. Asuka also mentions he's "useless without his car". Sometime later the new Driver game had a character who was named Tommy Vermicelli who I think couldn't swim.

    • @thatboy799
      @thatboy799 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Yeah I played the driver games cuz my parents wouldn't get gta. Obviously the inferior game lmao. Though, tanner is the main character throughout the whole series. @@thatboy799 i guess if you play driver expecting it to be like gta then you'll be disappointed, the thing with driver was that it's whole focus was on the driving. it's honestly kind of weird to compare the two series since they basically have nothing in common besides letting you drive around in realistic settings. driver's vehicle handling beats gta any day for me though, the sounds of the tire screeches are so satisfying

    • @superstriker412
      @superstriker412 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@quackmasterson5128 As a kid who wasn't allowed to play GTA I would compare them. Now that I have played both series' I enjoy both fir their own reasons. GTA is great for playing gangster. Driver is great for playing getaway driver. Driver San Fransisco is utterly underrated, I hate that Ubisoft has completely delisted it from online stores. Though it certainly isn't the same as the first couple games. My favourite GTA is definitely 4 for it's physics and the DLC. The driving, shooting, and overall realism is superior to 5 imo, but I can see why they made it less realistic in that game.

      You probably still see these games from a perspective of a salty kid who was denied playing GTA. But as driving games, especially for their time, Driver was pretty damn cool. Driver 1 was easily the most advanced driving game of its time and it was a joy to play. But I agree that when these games started mimicking GTA with Driver 3, the series went downhill. But then Driver San Francisco came out and, well let's say that it's still on of my favorite driving games ever released. I play it to this day. (And yeah, as SuperStriker mentioned, it's a shame how Ubisoft treats it.)

      Chinatown Wars used the touch-screen amazingly, and did an excellent "handheld game."
      VCS and LCS, revived old stories by adding to them, and nailed the "console experience on handheld."
      TLAD did the biker story so well, and took great advantage of LC.
      TBOGT had so much excitement- it's like the "more realistic" GTA V Online.

    5:30:55 the foreshadowing for michelle was actually done really well in 1 key moment at the beginning of the game. On the first date Niko comments on how everything in her house has the tags still on them. While michelle plays this off as her just being “clean” this small detail is actually brilliant. Since she is a government agent they set up her apartment so she could complete her job. Thats why all the stuff has tags because it was literally just created by the government to remove suspicion from people who entered. Like imagine saying you lived in the city for years but yet you have no furniture lol. Anyways thats just a detail you didn’t add in that i thought was pretty clever

    Great work! What hit the hardest for me was when you demonstrated the ambiance of gta 3. When you showed the npc’s random dialogue and the sounds of the city, it brought back so many memories from my childhood man; as im sure it did for a lot of other people. Theres just something so unique about these early gta titles that many openworlds fail to replicate even to this day

    • @monkehp
      @monkehp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s a truly groundbreaking game. They could’ve just done simple open world, and even though people say it doesn’t hold up today, they got so many little things right in the first try, including that dialogue and NPC variety. You can also complete missions in so many different ways, seeing his gameplay and how it differs from my current play through is awesome. Back when rockstar wasn’t averse to players going off the beaten linear path to pass the game.

    • @strikingdiscussion5263
      @strikingdiscussion5263 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@monkehp very solid points. I will say though, that the increased linearity has allowed them to create more complicated scripting which allows for more cinematic moments. However, this is a trade off, and I do share your sentiment in that I also miss the nonlinearity at times as well.

      When was this revealed?
      I have been wondering about this for years...

      @@tibersulla2305 I've known it for a long time. My best guess would be just after original release. Surely people must have been confused about Ryder's weird and anticlimactic ending, even back then.

      @@dannifugl3188 Even as a kid I sure noticed the anticlimactic end to my favorite character, but I never heard since then anything about a falling out between the actor and R*, although that's not surprising, not the first or second time this happened with R*.

      @@tibersulla2305 exactly. And if even kids notice, I'm sure some journalists did too, and looked into it. But that's my guess. Can't remember when I read it :)

    I am absolutely obsessed with introductory sentences for video essays. This video is about GTA specifically and it just starting with "video games are an incredibly complex and multifaceted form of media" which is giving bachelors thesis and I LIVE FOR IT

    I don’t comment often on TH-cam but I had to. This video is fantastic! While it’s taken me about a week to get through, it’s the level of deep dive I love! I’m glad you didn’t sacrifice quality for a shorter video
