  • 45-70 Henry Lever Action and 405 grain cartridges- That is today's topic here on ITW Firearms.
Hey shooters, I hope you came ready to enjoy the beauty and firepower behind my Henry 45-70 Govt Lever Action.
As much as I talk about this incredible piece of lead slinging technology, it was certainly time to shoot it for everyone.
I discarded the boxes for the ammunition. The 405, I recall, is Remington.
It was a nice, snowy day here in Western, CO and I was itching to make this video.
    I hope you enjoyed!

Brother, buy a little book by Paul Matthews titled 40Years With The 45-70. Youll enjoy it. Then stop using that Hornady Leverrevolution and load your own. You can go real cheap into it with an Lee loader kit and buy some cast bullets to start with.

Cheap Lee reload kit. But buy a good scale n you are golden. I have a cheap Lee kit its about 40 years now and I have load over 10k+ with it. Works great.

@@ITW.Firearms I cast my own 330 Lyman and Postell for 45-70 and Keith style SWC for .45 and .44 mag. Lee also sells great bullet molds. Load for those and many others since 1970s. Get your components now while you still can. Ditto on the Paul Matthews book.

Nice rifle! I reload for my Winchester 1886. Using cast bullets only so far both 308 gr and 405. . Also great results with factory Remington 405 gr Corelok (1600 fps). Also, Winchester 300 gr PowerPoint (1890 FPS) ammo has worked well. My goto powder has been Reloder 7 and my reloads are coming out at 1620 FPS.

If you're going to be going through Eastern Colorado down I-70 I live in a small town of Burlington I do have a magazine that you're welcome to that's all about reloading and it's got the data. I'm not sure but I believe that magazine is called reloader but a lot of your gun magazines will have some Reloading Data in it otherwise Limon and Hornady produces a reloader booklet.

All lever actions can jam the way the Henry did. It takes gunsmith work to smooth the lever action to make a lever more reliable. That said the size of the 45/70 round makes jambs more likely. Smaller calibers are less likely to catch a round in the gate. I shoot several different levers . It takes practice and smoothing your action to reliable at rapid fire

    • @ITW.Firearms
      @ITW.Firearms  หลายเดือนก่อน

Would you recommend taking it to a professional smith to smooth the action? Thanks for the comment and info

Great video! Awesome ride!! FYI… I started reloading years ago, and began with the book Modern Reloading by Richard Lee. Great book that covers the basics and more. A whole world of reloading gear and supplies out there. I eventually moved off of Lee equipment to Dillon as I wanted to load in volume for 45acp and 38/357.
Best of luck and keep sharing these great experiences. You’re very good at it.

Reloading get a Lee Reloading manual lee 45-70 dies a single stage press kit powder scale .
When you can use the 1873 Trap door loads or the 1886 Winchester / 1895 Marlin lover action loads that are a little hotter. You also have the opportunity to load Black Powder.
    I reload for my 1886 Winchester .
I also would be interested in getting the info on the ammunition bandalier.

There are heavy loads by Grizzly Cartridge that are made for big game they load a +P 300gr HP that runs 2400 fps. That’s enough to flatten a bear. But I agree hand loading opens a 45/70 up to more versatile and hard hitting loads

Baddest .45-70 commercial loads, Garrett Cartridges of Texas.
Also consider DoubleTap Ammo, Grizzly Ammo, Buffalo Bore, and Steinel.
Not sure of the status of Henry rifles if they can handle the +p or not, but Winchester 1886 (new manufacture) do easily, and the Ruger made Marlins can handle them as well.

Hi, I love the Henry Lever Action 45-70. The only reason you had the Failure to Feed, was because you didn’t complete the Cycle correctly when Levering in the next Round. The Henry runs great except when you don’t actuate the Lever completely. Very nice Rifle. Thanks for the Videos showing the Henry.👍👍

Reloading isn't all that difficult. Straight wall cases like the 45-70 and 45 Colt are very simple and straight forward. Figure what bullets you want to use and get the reloading manual from that company. Likely on their website as well. Having the manual is nice for all kinds of calibers and general information. Guns magazine is a great resource. Subscribe to that and the sister publication American Handgunner. Tank Hoover, one of the writers, loads both of those cartridges and has articles on such. A single stage press, powder measure, your dies, a hand held priming tool (RCBS or Lee) and your components will get you started. Save your brass!! 😁 From there you're all set. Having a chronograph to see what the loads are doing out of your guns is nice. Not absolutely necessary but sure makes load development easier to get the performance you want.

I hate saying anything critical, but it seemed your action was a little fast and herky jerky with the round that did not feed. I have shot lever action for 54 years with out a issue. Of course I live in South Florida and have no idea how that cold weather would effect the smoothness of the action. I don't do any outdoor activities below 55 degrees. LOL
