I think it depends on how original or elaborate the tattoo is. If it's something like the deathly hollows symbol then it's not copying because it's an established thing if that makes sense. I had a girl go get the Star Wars rebel alliance symbol after I did but I couldn't get mad cause it's not a symbol I made up. She likes star wars too.
she's not saying that like artwork from a tv show you can't get tattooed cause its not really stealing artwork its when someone comes up with a ideal and the tattoo artist draws it up then you see the tattoo on the person and want to copy that its hard to explain theres kinda a blurred line
What I don’t like about tattoo copying is when people want to get an exact replica of a tattoo that was custom made specifically for one person. I’ve heard someone say it’s like stealing someone’s skin when you steal a custom tattoo.
ok, First, i want to say how nice it is to hear someone voice it kinda how i feel it. SO MANY people are like "OMG i don't see the big deal, its my body" or "i hope you rot in hell theif" and kinda no in between. Basically i come from a huge family of Artists and Craftspeople, and i understand how valuable and time consuming art is to the artist. So yeah i get it when a tattoo artist sees their work ripped off they would be mad. Also, if your tattoo is like super personal i would never tell someone they were overreacting about their tattoo being copied. But all of my tattoos are custom, and most are symbolic, and i would not give a rats ass if someone copied my tattoos. Like i think it would be flattering to me, and i would not waste my time shitposting about it or being all upset at all. No idea is truly a new idea, everything has been done, so why stress. Meh.
If it's flowers, mandalas, skulls ( you get the point) then I don't consider it copying because just about EVERYONE has a tattoo like this and it originally isn't your idea. If it's a personal drawing, cartoon character you made up, a portrait, another's name u know something like that is copying. As you said, makeup is used by everyone, and there's a "style" all of the sudden; like winged eyeliner. Or if a rap artists says a made up slur, then everyone started saying it, yeah it's made up but everyone decided to use it as well. You can't really 100 percent own something and then show it off. It doesn't work like that, and for people to get hissy fits about it are sillier than the people that copy them lol
Hi Holly, it might be a pretty stupid question but can a client actually ask his/her tattoo artist not to post the tattoo on the internet? Or would it sound ungrateful? (Sorry if my English is a bit off, it's not my first language)
I did a big mistake for my first tattoo. I copied a swallow, but my tattoo artist changed some details, like its "mouth", some parts of the wings, and its colors are very lighter. Should I change at least one of the colors to make it even more different or is it enough "changed"? I love it, but I am sorry for the other person that owns it. Thank u! I love your channel!
If your tattoo is something simple like a swallow and/or more of a classic design, its not really the same as copying an intricately detailed and unique tattoo that came from the imagination of the artist and the customer. So don't feel bad at all about that!
Hi, I have a question, I took a picture of a live animal ( like a frog ) from the Internet. My artist did it and now he is doing it to other people in different ways, but it is still the same frog , same colors , just with some leaves or something added. What do you think of it. Oh by the way he has got en better at doing the frog.
If it was a photo you took yourself then id say its out of order, but if its a picture you got off the internet then its fair game as you never owned the rights to the photo
so i want to get a tattoo. and i saw this minimalistic barbed wire tattoo. i want to get it, but on a different body part, and also id like to put a little flower in a couple places on that wire. there is not much to change tbh can i do that? or is it stealing the idea? its a really simple tattoo so will i be also lame?
It certainly is unoriginal and uncreative to have someone else's tattoo copied onto your own skin. I really don't understand why so many people would want to do it but on the other hand, I also don't understand the amount of offense taken by people who have seen their tattoos copied. You put photos of your tattoos all over the internet. You pretty much have to accept the fact that someone will see it and want the exact same tattoo. It definitely isn't cool to take someone else's tattoo but it's also pretty ridiculous to get really angry and bitter about it. If you truly want your tattoos to stay 100% unique to you forever, the only way to guarantee that is to keep them hidden from the general public.
My question is, who's art are you stealing? Should more weight be given to the customer that thought of it, or the artist that did all the work? If the artist sees it as more of their work, then I can see where they would be coming from using a design more than once. It is, after all, their art to do with as they please.
+natkatmac you would be stealing the art of the artist that is permanently on the wearer, which is offensive to both parties. A reputable artist destroys pervious original stencils so it cannot be replicated exactly the same. It is the tattooists art but they wouldn't want to be doing the same design over and over again.
I am going to get my second tattoo here soon and I'm kind of confused. I had an idea of what I wanted for my first one but I'm not an artist. I searched for tattoos online using the topic of what I wanted and found a tattoo that was exactly what I'd been searching for. I took it in and asked if we could do something similar. I love it, and it means a ton to me. The second tattoo is something I was looking for for 2 years. I had tried drawing what I wanted and still couldn't figure out how I wanted it. I finally asked a family member to listen to the song I was inspired by and let them know what things I wanted in the tattoo and when I saw the finished design I felt the same feeling with the first one. Why would it be considered lame if it's about how you feel looking at a tattoo? I have the same love for both designs, and the tattoo artist with the first one was completely understanding of that.
+Giovanna Greeff Did the artist take inspiration from the artwork you brought in or copied it exactly how it is? With the second tattoo, it's ok for an artist to use something that your family member drew up since most likely no one else has that design. It's original and even better made by a family member not another tattoo artist's tattoo.
It was a tattoo that I saw online all over the place, but it was exactly what I wanted. They changed the thickness of lines, and position of parts of it, but it's pretty much the same. It was a tattoo based off of a couple pictures I'd seen online as well so I'm not sure if it was an original design or if it was based off of some other medium.
I'm wondering if it's okay to get a tattoo a character has in a movie you love or would that still not be genuine enough of a reason because the tattoo I want the most is on that movie because it means a lot to me. I don't want to copy any other tattoos though because I'm an artist and can do original work.
+Marisa Rose Of course you can get your favorite character from a show tattooed on you! And you can do so much to that character to make it your own, like change it's style (cartoon, anime, realism, black and grey etc.). Unless you are set on a design used before by another artist you should be golden.
Holly Astral you cannot copyright a tattoo it’s not like a book. You didn’t come up it. So you’re saying if I get s treble clef and someone else gets a treble clef that’s copying? That’s fucking stupid.
This is a problem that artists simply will not understand, just because some people have no creativity does not mean they are lame, or stupid or lack brain power. The brain has two hemispheres and in general people develop one or the other more. You have no right to come and say that thosewhose minds work on a logical basis are less than those whose minds work on a creative basis. With tattoos in particular i am all for copying if it's on the internet. I know a lot of people who want tattoos but don't get one because they don't know what to get. And then they see a tattoo and they feel it in their bones that it's the one and they want the exact thing, who are you to deny them that? Now to be fair, if that happens to me i'd go to the artist who did it originally, but that is impossible sometimes. So i don't think people should be punished for it. Just like i wouldn't punish someone for having a copy of mona lisa, or an eiffel tower key chain or whatever.
No where in any creative industry is it ok to plagiarize, Tattoo artists must walk a fine line between keeping the client satisfied while maintaining an ethical code of conduct, or a moral sensibility in regards to art. You can't steal an idea, but you sure can plagiarize someone's work. If you know what you want, bring in references, I like this from here, I like this from there, your artist will come up with something original, just for you...and won't have to sacrifice their character. If you don't know what you want, go talk to an artist...tell them you're interests, what you're passionate about...if you're not creative, they should be...or please, do us a favor and pick some flash out of a binder. Much love and peace all oxo

Awesome video holly, took the words right out of my mouth. Huge fan, keep rockin'. Can't wait to see what you post next. 🤘🏻
Thanks for watching Lucy!!! Just posted a new video!
Do you think it's okay if tattoo is tiny 1×1 and it's a moon with arrows and dots that it's okay to copy since it's simple?
2:53 took the words right outta my mouth people going to copy other tattoos how many spider webs you seen on elbows?
V a i r e A black music note is a universal tattoo everyone uses that

Its always worth asking! Every one is different :)

This was really down to earth.
Tattoo artists work hard to come up with these ideas, draw, and tattoo them, that's why most will not copy
How do you feel about copy piercings ?
thank you for being realistic about it.
I look at it this way. You will never see that person because they probably live on a different side of the world. You’re being a little judgmental
Well, you’re entitled to your opinion. (Even if it’s wrong)

coming from an Aussie, you didn't sound Australian, you sounded British :)
I love your hair!
The Australian and British accents have many similarities
batmans apprentice I'm Aussie, and she definitely has a British accent, certainly not Aussie. ✌

im all for getting references from other tattoos but just copying someone else orginal tattoo isnt cool
