    "You're paying for the years of expertise" - YES! THIS!
    I work as a photographer and the amount of un-educated people who think my prices are too high because I "just press a button" is crazy.

    Surprised you didn't mention the tattoo shops rent too! Some might have high rent/electricity bills in different areas or usages, so need different hourly rates.

    • @HollyAstralTattoo
      @HollyAstralTattoo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +65

      Yep! Artist cut to the shop can be 50% to cover things like electricity/rent. Some cities charge through the nose for a tattoo licence, too.

      May I ask what size it was, an estimate? That's super nice!
      I'm personally still set in job hunting mode as of now lol, unfortunately, but I do plan on getting my envisioning of tattoos done within the next couple of months. It'd be a small upper right side back tattoo for a first; small quote verse in two languages above and below one another... an animal, with an accessory it carries, connecting to this verse. Small tattoo entirely, but not sure how they'd go about pricing, and I can't ask till I'm with a job, some cash, and availability in scheduling. 🤣
      Then there's two others (custom tattoo ideas) with one word for my ring finger, and another short 3 wording on my lower sided arm. So, all to be small tattoos, the first one being more detailing, and time, but would help to know more about pricing info.
      The parlor is in a good pricing area. Fair, of decency.
      I think maximum they could charge is like, $150. For one piece rate. Scared if anything more. 😂😬

They had me clock out for the 15 minutes I had a break, and insisted I clock out before I went and got my phone and wallet. It took like 3 minutes off my break to get my stuff and took another 7 to get food and go through the line, by the time I got all that done and headed back to the breakroom i only had 5 minutes to eat. I got 4 tattoos to start my Beatles sleeve the other day and they are all pretty big ( I got like 85-90% of my forearm covered). She only charged me for the time when the needle touched my skin and when it went away. I was there for a little over 4 hours, but only 2 hours of actual tattooing. She only charged me $214 and I gave her a $30 tip because of how good she did. She is also great to talk to which makes the process better. We went from talking about The Beatles to Charles Manson lol

    • @napalmbones

      I've had the traditional paper stencil. I've also been drawn on with marker (not s Sharpie though. I believe they do not wash off as easily as just regular marker) and ball point ink. None of those affect the quality of the tattoo in any way.

    I am not a Tattoo Artist, but I am glad some one took the time to explain how it works. I have been in a shop where the customer annoyed me asking why, when , how & so on. I have tons of respect for Tattoo Artists. Please don't take up the Artists time after they have put effort in to your Tattoo already. If you have to ask Please do that the first time you speak with them or do research on the Artist usually they will put it on the website that they are on. It may say ask me about my hourly rate or it may say my hourly rate is we will say $250 or whatever the price is. Thank You Holly!!!

    The way I look at it is "Do I love this artists' style for the general idea i have for my next tattoo?" If so whatever money they ask is worth it. If you can't see the difference in artists when looking at flash, or just want cymbals/small writing, go to the cheapest option. Not only will you be saving yourself cash, but no established artists that I've ever been tattooed by (or talked too) wants to do them. So I think thats a good kinda system to chose by for everyone

    ive been to a shop who quoted £90 for a palm sized tattoo and have been charged £140 on the day because they ran over (they charged me for the time it took them to set up and the time THEY took to have a break) i feel like i was overcharged for the results. i freaked out because i only had £100 on me and i was crying trying to figure out how to fix it
    ive also been to a shop who quoted me £100 for 2 tattoos which take up basically my lower leg and the artist is mind blowingly good! i feel like she undercharges

      That sucks. I always ask my artist for an estimate (she usually knows about how long she'll need since she knows the level of detail because the sketch is already done). If we go over that time, she won't charge me for it, which is super cool of her.

    • @GenaFrog

      If you asked for a QUOTE then I'm pretty sure it's legally binding, but if you ask for an ESTIMATE, it can be lower or higher than you were told. I've thankfully not had that happen but if it did and I'd only just taken enough cash, it'd be too bad if I'd been given a quote, they'd have to accept the loss because I haven't got credit cards. What are they going to do? Remove the tattoo??

    I got a tattoo that says "Let go and let happen" in literally the most basic font, no cursive, no shading, nothing. Just tiny black letters. It took honestly maybe 20 minutes max and was charged $120 (about 92£) for it without a tip. I didn't want to be rude and ask why it costed so much, but my friend went to the same place and got a rose on her hip for $140 (about 107£) with a tip and it took hers about an hour and a half... Were they just jipping me or what?😅

    Although it is a more frugal art, you could apply the same perspective to barbers. I pay 20€ and my friends spend 5€ only (8-12€ local average price for an haircut). For them there's no difference although they spend about 20 to 30 minutes with the barber and usually they doing an ok job considering the time frame. My barber takes from 1h up to 2h depending if my beard needs trimming or the specific haircut I'm wanting. And he keeps a record of my own particularities, head shape and hair type and he always makes a hell of job.

    Tattoo prices are as logical as anything else. If you need someone to do a job that only someone with years of study and experience can do, then you pay a higher price than for a job that anyone can do. A complicated, creative tattoo requires a tattoo artist who has spent years of effort into becoming good enough to create that tattoo.

    I have been working with a tattooist to design my first tattoo, I am really happy with his process and I am looking forward to the final result (not sure how bad the tattooing will be). One thing that hasn’t been mentioned yet is the cost. Is there a way of estimating the cost? I want to ensure it is not out of my price range and don’t want to waste his time. I appreciate it might be impossible to know how long it will take but not knowing if it is going to cost me 50, 500, 5000 pounds is concerning.

    I get my tattoos when I am traveling. In Germany they charge around 120 USD/h but in other countries it is around 10-20 USD per hour (Latin and South East Asian countries). But I do understand why the hourly price is higher in Germany. It's not because of the skills or experience, but because of the higher living costs

    • @carolann811
      @carolann811 7 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      You're a little--way--off base on your assumptions. It's usually the other way round: artists who give subpar work don't GET tips from clients.
      Artists don't ASK for tips. But if you're at all knowledgeable about getting tattoos, you should know to tip your artists. It's a sign of respect for the work they've done, for their time and expertise. And yes, you could argue that's built into their rates. But giving your artist a tip is considered sort of an unwritten rule that people who get tattooed on a regular basis learn (I would suspect you're not in that category). It's just good practice, particularly if you plan to go back to that artist for more work.
      Your examples are irrelevant. This is an industry where tips are expected. The ones you listed are not. There's a difference.
      And actually, I have tipped a carpenter who went above and beyond to accommodate a quirky design in something for me. He didn't have to. He didn't use any extra materials. He did it because he's a good guy and wants a happy client. So he got an extra $20.
      Your dental hygienist example is off more because I'm not paying her directly for her services. She receives a wage from her employer. Chances are great she's not allowed to even accept tips per her employment contract.

    • @carolann811
      @carolann811 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      For multiple session pieces, I tip after each session. It's easier for me to just automatically add that to the total and pay them that.
      I've had a tattoo that took over a year from first session to last and also with gaps of several months between sessions (also completely different states) so to wait until the end kind of defeats the purpose, in my mind, of leaving a tip.

    0:00 I like how you’ve made a video about this. Yes, I hate how expensive tattoos are, but as an artist it’s understandable. You’re paying for someone’s time, skill, supplies you’re using up, and the art piece itself. Also, it’s art on your skin so it’s gonna be more expensive than say art on paper. Also, artists in a studio that tattoo you might have to pay the studio for their space.

    loving the videos. I'm an apprentice here in the states and I've barely scratched the surface on tattooing real skin and I'm kinda in a rut. I've been told that apprentice tattoos should be free or at least shop minimum so that the supplies are covered. the shop owner (not my mentor) wants all artist's (including myself) to charge 100 an hour. I personally don't feel like I'm good enough yet to charge that much yet. When I talked to the owner about my concerns and why I haven't been able to bring clients in, i was told to obey and do what he says or pack my shit. I know what my skill level is and I know I'm not as fast as the other artists. A lot of times I've been paying half the price just to get people in, which I do get back on my paycheck but I can only do that for so long. I want to progress but i cant progress if i can't people in if they know im charging 100 an hour. At this point I'm not really sure what to do. Do I stay and continue on at a snails pace or do I cut my losses and start over elsewhere. any advice?

      Maybe it will scare less people if you just say the final price by piece (it will be the same amount of money but people will know how much for sure what amount of money theyre paying) you just have to know what amount of time is taking you to do it to be able to know how much (or because you are slow charge the price that it will normally cost base on the normal amount of time it should take to do it . ;) im not an artist myself but this is what i ask my artist and he charge pretty much the same price just like you do .just be able to give the final price so nobody feel awkward or stress out ;) oh i forgot im sure you could try to work at home too to make extra money and practice yourself put an annonce show what you can do ect charge less if you want it that way or not ;p

The studio charges £80 per hour so I'm guessing that they have booked me in for a 2 hour slot. Now if they finish in say an hour for example, would that give me more time to add to it or would they be able to just say they quoted me a fixed price, in your experience? Sorry I would ask them but there closed today 😁 Thanks

    just build a good relationship with your artist. you should never expect any handouts but it does help to be kind and respectful. after all its their art thats going on you so dont try to diss any of their work as that can be taken personally really quickly. do anything you can to help them out and be a good customer. and tip them for their work. my artist was a little pricey at first but now i find that when i go into the shop hes allot easier going. he actually puts quite a bit of effort and time into helping me visualize what it is that i want. and its gotten a bit cheaper. obviously not anything drastic. a tattoo that might of cost me 400 bucks costs me 350 or 370 or something like that. but the real value comes into him taking the extra time to work with me and help me out and actually show some enthusiasm for the work hes about to do. basically guaranteeing that i walk out of there a satisfied customer

    i really want to get a tatoo and ive found a good artist as well but the problem is that i never really know what i should get.. i was thinking about maybe a nature inspired piece (for example a realistic bird or some flowers)
    what are your opinions on first tattoos? like on what place of the body and how big is best for someone inexperienced?

    my father is loyal to one artist and when the artist moved to a shop and hour away he still drives there for work on his sleeves and back. i think he is charged a flat rate and the artist typically works for an hour on him.

    Also I heard cost of living affects tattoo prices.A tattoo could cost 500 USD in one place and 300 USD in another for the similar tattoo and time.

    I see this advice as very similar to a regular fine artist practice. As a painter, most of us base things on size and our own rate. Someone else may do the same art for cheaper at bigger sizes but if you want a certain piece from a certain artist be prepared to work for and pay a price on their terms! Its just respectful of the artist and the value of their work. Art can be hard to value between a customer and artist.

      Whathuhwhowhere well said, well said.. I’m a plasterer from Australia, and I have repeat clients who refer and continually call me back for that exact reason. Not everyone can paint or that matter use plaster in the way that we can. We are artisans of our particular trades and it’s the experience, quality of work, ethic and final result of finish or excellence that determines our prices.

    I thinmk most prices are very reasonable! The going rate seems to be between £60 and £80 an hour from what i can see for most studios depending on location etc! My guy charges somewhere inbetween that and it's not a street studio (no walk ins
    ) and considering how much they lose to hre the chair, how much disposables and new machines etc cost i think this is VERY Reasonable considering the skill put into it! At the end of the day this is going to be with me for the rest of my life, so i invest in it! however much my sleeve costs, it costs!

      When i went for the consultation i showed him my ideas and i got a +ve vibe off of him right away and he was bouncing ideas around straight away. I decided to book the first sitting there and then! I Didnt know what the process was so i didnt have cash with me so came back the week after once id been paid! I didnt even know how much the hourly rate was, but i know i wanted it done by him!
      Choose an artist you can't NOT have tattoo your piece, not one that CAN do it, then the price is irrelebant! If its expensive just save up for longer!

    So me and my two best friends kind of have a rule of thumb for our tattoos, for small pieces we go to one artist at one shop bc the shop minimum is only about 35 american dollars, and we know the guy so we can get some good ink discounted, and he does piece pricing, they also do not really except tips and for our bigger pieces 2 of us go to a different shop bc their minimum is 60 and they do hourly, and expect tips. Most people would say the cheaper is a less experienced shop, but it really isn't, the owner has years and years of experience and is picky about who he lets in. And they are generally the same quality. i think oart of getting tattooed with the intent of having a lot of pieces is figuring out artists you're comfortable with, my first tattoo was a fiasco, and it was the same price as my third tattoo that was much larger and healed with ease, you gotta learn which artists you like to work with

  • @QueerCripple

    Wonderful information! I own a tattoo kit at home, I am not by any means a professional, and simply do practice on synthetic skin or myself. However I still get annoyed when my friends ask me to do a tattoo for them, because I don't have the extra money. If I were to do a tattoo for a friend, at this point in time I would have to go ahead and buy all new needles and Lake four colors of ink... And asking a professional artist for a free or really cheap tattoo is just extremely insulting. It's great to hear how the price breakdown works, I think too few people understand everything that goes into the art of tattooing.

  • @maddiem8754
    @maddiem8754 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    So I’m wondering about what percentage of tattoo price is profit for the tattoo artist? I get ask you said they have to pay for equipment and I’m guessing there are some dues to the shop they are working in. But say a tattoo is 100$, approximately how much of that at the end of the day goes in the artists pocket?

    Hi, I’m super late to this video but I just turned 18 and I really really want to get a tattoo. I want flowers around my wrist like a quarter sleeve and on my inner wrist I want a butterfly but I want it to look like a full piece rather then a butterfly and some flowers but my mom won’t let me get “that big of a tattoo” and just wants me to get a butterfly and do the flowers later on but I’m afraid if I do that it won’t look like a full piece it will look like 2 separate because if I get 2 tattoos at different times I’ll probably be seeing 2 different artist. I just want ur input because ur a tattoo artist if I should pull the plug and just get the full piece regardless of what my mom thinks or just the butterfly and get the flowers later on.
