- Mildred Jeter was born in 1939. She was of African and Rappahannock (Native American) descent.
Richard Loving was born in 1933. He was of Caucasian (white) descent.
Mildred and Richard were childhood sweethearts in Caroline County, Virginia. When they grew up, they decided to marry.
The marriage laws in Virginia said that no white person could marry a non-white person, so the Lovings were married in June, 1958 in Washington..
After they returned home, the local sheriff burst into their bedroom and arrested Mr. and Mrs. Loving.
To avoid going to jail, the couple had to leave Virginia.
The Lovings moved to Washington, but in time were frustrated that they could not visit their families in Virginia.
in 1963, Mrs. Loving wrote the US Attorney General, Robert F. Kennedy, who referred her case to the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union). The case was taken all the way to the US Supreme Court.
On June 12, 1967. the Supreme Court ruled that the laws forbidding inter-racial marriages were unconstitutional.
After the Supreme Court decision, Mr. and Mrs. Loving moved back to Virginia to raise their own three children.
Mildred and Richard Loving supported everyone's right to marry.
In honor of the Lovings, June 12th is known as Loving Day - a day to celebrate mixed-race marriages.
I think it's so beautiful his last name was Loving, very symbolic for a case like theirs!
Glad their last name is not Hating.
@Balmain Chanel Richard 24 Mildred 18.
@Balmain Chanel Richard died at age 41 Mildred was 35 when he died.
Almost as if it’s of God
Too many coincidences
@@bigiron7547 I agree, especially when I found out Mildred name means "gentle strength".
Just watched the movie “loving”. I love how they did the casting to look as similar to the real people! Even the lawyers!
Indeed! they did a great job casting and the actors were wonderful to watch, i fell in love with the Lovings and was rooting for them all the way through it (sounds daft for a story that has already been written but i was!) i even wished i could go back in time with some kind of superhuman powers or something daft/impossible like that and crush those disgusting laws.
After watching the movie, which made me feel a number of emotions it was so sad that after all they went through just to be able to live together where they were born and raised with their families that Richard was killed by a selfish murdering drink driver 7 years after this landmark case.
That really hit me, i had hoped to get to the end of the film and then search the internet and find they were both still alive with a couple of generations of "Lovings" that followed, brought a lump to my throat that i just cannot get rid of.
There is so much hate inside some people it's frightening and disgraceful, and all because someone looks slightly different? or has darker/lighter skin?? it blows my mind!!
For example i look at your profile picture and i see a woman, not a "Black" woman...... and if your skin was lighter? i would still see a woman, if your skin was green?........ i would still see a woman, the point is i see a woman not something society and sheep label/group you as, be it white, black, pink, blue or green or whatever else, i just see people......... i wish everyone else could too.
My only concern when i meet someone is what they are like as an individual.
It is because of a number of things including small mindedness, jealousy, hate, lack of education, fear of the unknown, religion and separation that these problems exist.
Humanities capacity for hatred is disgusting!!!
I was amazed by that too))
It's the first time I've seen Joel Edgerton act and he everyone else did a great job.
Was just thinking the EXACT same thing!!!
@@ReggieK-hn1uy I agree with all you said.... 🥰🥰🥰
They paved the way for future generations. Their last name is amazingly well named.
I had no idea about that actually, and I was just really touched by the story, I never said that they where the first. The human race has been mixing DNA since pre history. However the people in this touching story deserve much praise, especially because of the time they lived in. They fought for their love against the law itself.
People stop the bull, Whites have African blood in them too, do a Dna and you will find out, because mankind descends from Africa, we come from Noah's three sons Japheth, Shem and Ham. Being a black woman who has always loved black men, I watched this movie and my heart melted. What difference does it make what color someone’s skin is. He loved his wife. She loved her husband and color could not, would not interfere. I guess, this is what REAL LOVE looks like. I’m so glad they fought for their love. Ironic, his last name was “Loving.” 💕
Women of My own race rejected me. I wish I knew why. I’m black/Native American and currently dating a Latina.

So grateful for the Lovings, their attorneys and this ruling. It allowed my husband and I to get married in a southern state many years later. I wish I could thank all involved in person. This ruling has allowed me to legally spend my life with the most beautiful person I have ever met and raise sweet children with him.

If only that was true.
In marriage, you or your spouse might suffer.
As progeny, your children might suffer.
I am NOT suggesting that those who persecute would be right in their persecutions, only that to think that you're "free" to love who you want is naive, and even potentially dangerous.
The sociology highlighted by the Loving case is hardly over.

I had the chance to see an advance screening of the new film Loving and it was very well done. Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga, were great in capturing the sincerity of this couple. Their onscreen chemistry is so powerful, that it makes you fall in love with the Lovings. Great movie.
“I am still not a political person, but I am proud that Richard’s and my name is on a court case that can help reinforce the love, the commitment, the fairness, and the family that so many people, black or white, young or old, gay or straight, seek in life. I support the freedom to marry for all. That’s what _Loving,_ and loving, are all about." - Mildred Loving
My beautiful daughter who is white is dating a boy who is Spanish and black. It doesn't matter. They are a wonderful couple. They love each other and make each other so happy. I couldn't ask for a better boyfriend for my daughter and I would be very happy if he were the one. My husband and I really like him. He is nice and respectful to us and more importantly he is kind and respectful to our daughter. What more could we ask for? He is by far the best boyfriend she has ever had. Race shouldn't matter when two people truly love each other.
Wendy MarksFiolek bet you wouldn't say that if he was dark skin full black 👦🏿
Wendy MarksFiolek thank you for accepting them
+Nickelwindow53 why would you say that? obviously your dealing with your own issues but don't lay then unfairly at the feet of others who said nothing to deserve it.
Wendy MarksFiolek Spanish ???? Black ???? You mean Hispanic ???? Spaniards are not black you ignorant. Don't need to show off cause your daughter likes a black guy. It's just a normal thing

He really loved her.
she seems so sweet, and they love each other so much
Respect....what a POWERFUL!!!couple. ..thank you
Can’t believe it took until 1967 to legalize interracial marriage, ridiculous
I can. Heck here in Georgia a school in a neighboring county to me had segregated proms until the early 2000s.
@@KelliM Sad :(
Me either it still baffles me that it all happened to begin with. I know racism is a thing and still to this day. I just can not UNDERSTAND the reasoning at all. Makes me sick.
It’s only southern states that had laws on the books against it
Only for the southern states.
Thank you for breaking the color barrier. What a lovely couple.
This is such a beautiful story and I live in Virginia and I couldn’t imagine anything like this happening to people from the 1980s on and definitely by the 1990s. We have so many biracial families in America and especially here in Virginia and I think it’s a beautiful thing and people should be able to be with who they love.
Strong beautiful black woman and a strong wise white man with cute lucky kids
Define "lucky"...
@@xunder3 Lucky as in they fought to be able to be with each other and that granted them the privilege of having kids rather than losing the case.
Kids are lucky because of the loving kind parents
How could you say something so hateful? White men are not going to save you.
@@marckristian81 so who did?
i just finished watching the movie "Loving" great movie, gave me chills down my spine, and overall I'm glad they won the case, they did so much to fight, never gave up and had so much love for each other.
Mr. And Mrs. Loving is the original movie both are great
wow, that is crazy. it's a shame they had to endure all that. a marriage is between two people, not the world. As far as children go they will be just as beautiful as anyone elses. Glad they stood up for themselves.
I'm thankful for what they've done cause they paved the way for a lot of people. An amazing couple who fought for what was right. Their children are beautiful by the way
Thank you the Lovings for paving the way for us! Wow!
Donna Morris-Davidson Yes ma'am #History
The love these 2 had for each other. So much gratitude to them for what they went through and did.
They look like such a sweet, loving (no pun intended) couple. How could you not want them to be happy?
They ARE a true loving couple !💜x
Rest in peace Richard!💕
Everything looks good on paper.
Looks can be deceiving..
They are a beautiful couple, love has no labels

My parents, my marriage, my cousins, and so many people across this nation owe so much to them. Thanks for enduring all the hate, confusion, and stress so the rest of us can have a better tomorrow.
She has such a sweet Charm about her... Beautiful couple. ❤
I love ❤️ the strong love the Lovings were given from above. They continue to be great examples of "His" mercy and grace.
What an amazing story. I just finished watching the movie and I am still crying. They paved the way for rest of us. I am married to my husband, same gender. Their last name is loving, symbolic of a case like theirs!
Sad that happened in the “land of freedom”.
By so-called "Christians", too
alonzo9772: Mrs. Loving did indeed write another simple but beautiful letter in support of people's right to marry who they choose, black or white, gay or straight. The letter was written a few years ago, by which time Mr. Loving had died.
"I am still not a political person, but I am proud that Richard's and my name is on a court
case that can help reinforce the love, the commitment, the fairness, and the family that so
many people, black or white, young or old, gay or straight seek in life. I support the
freedom to marry for all. That's what Loving, and loving, are all about."
I can't wait to see the movie.
Poku Jonathan what's the name and where can I found it
Meka Pitts it's called loving. it just came in theaters
I just saw it. I'm a white guy and I cried my eyes out. He really loved her.
The movie is what made me come here. I was balling my freaking eyes out at the very end,
+•Infinite Hype• I cried too. I felt like I understood how he felt for her.
I am the product of two mixed family's. I married a white man. I tell my kid often find someone who will love you, it's hard enough to even find that.
So timely and still relevant. One of the most memorable things I've seen on youtube. Thank you.
In the end love always wins.
thank you Mr. and Mrs. Loving for fighting not only for your right to love and marry, but my and my beautiful wife's right too love and marry. thank you.
It's sad people are wanting to overturn this and actually go back in time. This world has so much evil.
I used to be a racist but not anymore since God changed me. In the end, all colors will go to eternity and being white, black or Hispanic etc won't matter to Him. You need to have Jesus.
Amen!
Beautiful person!
Amen 🙏🏽

I've only dated women who did not share my race. I didn't do that on purpose, it just happened to be like that. And because of the Lovings, I am free to marry any person, regardless of their race. Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Loving. God bless the both of you.
So amazing that I went to school with their grandchild !
Woah the casting for the film was like... ON POINT
The real people look so similar to the actors in the Loving film
Mildred was beautiful.
One of my favorite movies. The part when the lawyers asked Mr Loving what he wanted to say to the Supreme Court and his answer was tell them I love my wife. A quiet reserved family changed the laws. The best movie.
Best line of the movie!
Should make people appreciate marriage. Amazing how they overcame such a stupid law.
Mrs loving was so sweet and innocent her husband was a lucky guy.
Loving is one of the most heart-wrenching yet beautiful movies ever
She is gorgeous
I saw the movie about this story some years ago. Everyone should see it, and know about their experience.
Thanks for posting.
This shit makes me sick. A man loves a woman. A man and a woman get married. The state should never interfere. It makes me sick that this happened in my country. I'm proud we have come this far but we haven't come far enough. So I'm gonna stay loving my fiancé. She is a beautiful human being and I will give her the world. I don't give a damn what anyone says.
I thank the person so much for posting this video... If it wasn't for this couple to take action upon this matter, who knows who would have taken action later on in life
thank you, I have the most beautiful mixed son in the whole world and he's my everything, I don't know what I'd be without him.
It's so heartbreaking to learn the story of this couple and their family. I can't believe Slavery and Racism still exist up to now.
Their story is so inspiring ❤️
This case paved the way for marriage equality for ALL 🌈
My mum was white my dad is black. They married in 1958 in UK. They had to deal with racists from both white and black communities.
So...I'm immensely proud of them both.
+Christine Cherry that's amazing Christine, have you thought about writing their story?
I haven't thought about it until now Sorin Oka. My mum was the daughter of a devote middle class couple. They turned their backs on her for several years. Only her aunt supported them.
My uncle was white and my step aunt Black. They married in 1970 and were ostracized by Wall Street where both worked in power positions.
I watched this movie a few months ago,and it was just beautiful.Afterwards,I checked out the story about the real couple, and was glad the movie stuck as close as possible to the actual Loving couple:) It amazes me that this all took place only 50 years ago!
What a beautiful and brave couple they were . Their determination to fight for their love and to protect and keep their family together, at a time when racism , not only tried to keep them apart, but labeled them as criminals , makes them truly admirable. My respect for them , knows no bounds. They courageously did their part, to make a positive change in our country and to ensure that others are free to love each other and marry , whatever the difference, in their skin tone. To ensure, that other biracial married couples, were not awaken in the middle of the night and pulled from their marital bed , treated like criminals, arrested and have their children declared as being illegitimate.
Wait wait

You got it hippy era
who else saw this movie on netflix about them called "Loving.?"
Я видел, посмотрите этот фильм, обязательно. Очень советую.
I love this true romantic story. there are many many worse actions in our world than two people in love !
I am forever greatful to MR. AND MRS. LOVING for their courage & diligence on behalf of the me and others of the same mind. People can not help who they fall in love with. Your name is befitting of the case "LOVING!"
I believe TRUE LOVE is COLOR BLIND if TWO PEOPLE really LOVE each other...There's nothing written in the BIBLE against this....and I've never heard GOD,JESUS or the HOLY SPIRIT ever remark on this...
More accurately you have never heard God, Jesus or the Holy Spirit remark on anything, mainly because it is nonsense and fantasy and they do not exist.
Made up nonsense to control the masses, and ridiculously people still live their lives by books and bullshit written hundreds/thousands of years ago by those in control at the time to force those they saw as "Below them" to tow the line, Religion is the root of racism and the cause of the majority of all the hate/murder/death/wars and all the other unsavoury things humanity does to itself.
Until people educate themselves and disassociate themselves with the mindset of sheep, it will continue.
I don't believe love is color blind. Love sees all of the other, sees color of skin, gender, the flaws and loves with respect, acceptance, and an open heart. Love sees all because love wants to understand.
MsBettyR. Thank you! You nailed it!
@lo la a Religious simpleton saying "who are you to push your opinion on others" how ironic 😂🤣😂 thick as shit, big surprise.

The fact that Alabama kept this law until 2000 is disgusting to know

What a great movie. The problem is there’s not enough love in the world. It’s rare, and when people find it and deserve each other it needs to be respected. A very disturbing movie in parts, but very well-made.
Excellent film ....Loving 2016... Well worth watching.
They way ALL OUR PEOPLE talked back then so soft and quite very calming.
With all the hate and division going on today in the modern world. Why are some people still against this?
This is the year my mom was born. A couple decades later, she, a white woman, married my father, a Black man, and had 4 kids. My son is the result of an interracial marriage, as well as my sister's 2 kids. My other sister's baby daddy is also biracial and they have a daughter. So my entire family is a result of this brave couple who changed the world for all of us.

This movie, brought tears to my eyes, how they loved each other, how he took care of her, and his family, beautiful love story, with a beautiful ending, thank God, things changed, hard to imagine laws like this actually existed.
And despite the supreme court decision in 1967 regarding Interracial Marriage. It was not until November 2000, that the final law against Interracial Marriage was finally removed off the law books in the state of Alabama despite the law not being enforceable.
What a rotten system to consider their love a crime.

@@Just_J-MLBB so sad it was. Considering their love a crime is the biggest crime!

How about thanking the two Jewish lawyers, Bernard Cohen and Phil Hirschkopf, for working so hard in bringing justice to this case. Without their efforts, the Lovings would never have been free to live their lives. These two upstanding men worked tirelessly to have these bigoted laws nullified. A massive well done to them.

My parents are also an interracial couple, they faced a lot of prejudice to be together and, if it weren't for their love I wouldn't be here.
The bravery of these two. Much respect.
Love has no race.
Love is a 4 letter word that defines the beautiful emotions that two beautiful people share.
Only in America could there be laws against interracial marraige - that sums up America
Not necessarily. And America is actually one of three countries to have restricted interracial marriage.
@Marissa Lopes I’m not pushing an agenda, just stating facts that are objectively true.
It wasn't just the United States that had these kinds of laws.
