Yeah and ”no recess”, I think it means detention. The kids who are born to be bad at school or dont care about school usually get into trouble and then in detention.

Agreed. To say they are better or not is just a matter of personal opinion, not fact. I don't think they're the best band ever, but they were the most real and most authentic band ever. They weren't rock stars. Just three guys who never changed and kept it real. That's why no one ever seen their type before in the music industry and probably never will.

This isn't just music, this is passion. You can see the guitar take kurt away like he's being lead to fight it with his emotion, like the guitar is leading him far into a place of ecstasy yet he's trying to over come his enemy, this isn't just art, it's everything that music was, but has yet to come.
I almost cry every time I hear him yell it....just gives me so much energy. I am studying for an exam and I was completely just blanking out at the screen....I had to listen to this track to give me energy.
As someone who had the worst high school experience, especially in the last year of high school, I love the rage from this song. The lyrics are simple but anyone who shares the pain that the people in that place made you feel like utter shit feels these lyrics to their core, especially when he screams out “You’re in high school again”. It’s like he’s letting all the trauma he endured out in this song
And I know the town he grew up in, Aberdeen, WA - racist macho rednecks is par for the course there, I'm sorry to say. A bad place for a thoughtful, sensitive soul like Kurt,
That made me cringe. Let's ignore that grunge was a thing. Kurt helped bring punk rock to the mainstream. Stick to saying that. After all kurt was a punk rocker and thats what nirvana's music was/is...PUNK ROCK!
For all you people this song is about kurt not being ever able to escape school mentality, popularity, bullies, hierachy. 'No recess' is a metaphor for the fact their was no break from school ever. Kurt looked at all the people and thought 'fuck i'm still at school'. It's a beatiful metaphor for how trapped he felt in society. This is where the rage and beauty of Nirvana's music stems from.
This song is unironically one of my favorites of Nirvana. To me, it reminds me of how all my classmates from high school moved past from those school years and thriving while I’m still having a mundane life, not a thing has changed and I haven’t moved on since I graduated years ago and how exhausting it gets with no recess. And every time I’m reminded of that and my past, I’m in high school again. It’s both annoying and tragicomic and this song totally represents that for me.
as a teenager and a beginner guitarist I've heard this guitar tone years ago and I feel like it changed my view of music forever. Even though I listen (and play) completely different music now, I still think it's the most intense, raw and authentic guitar tone of the entire alternative rock history. Listening to it is a musical equivalent of scratching a very itchy place with sand paper lol, i love it
I love how the melody and chords in the chorus bring that intense contrast between tough emotion (first more angry 'no recess' more focused on 'now') and then deep desperation emotion (second longer more heart broken 'no recess')
Nirvana was the best rock band of all time. And to think they accomplished that title in just a few years. They can't be topped. People have tried... they just can't
Certainly the best band of the last 30 years. Cobain’s songwriting is underrated if anything. The guy was basically Lennon and Mccartney tier yet he just gets lumped in with the Seattle scene.
@MS-eb8cf Exactly! If anything, he's superior to Lennon / McCartney given he was doing both roles by himself, and he did it all in much, much less time. I realize it may sound absurd to say they're the #1 best of all time, but it's honestly the conclusion I come to. There's just something about Kurt's singing and songwriting that can't be topped, despite the fact its not particularly complex or technically precise. But with his style of music, that actually made it better not worse. If you got the best technically trained singer to perform Lithium or Smells Like Teen Spirit, for example... it wouldn't be anywhere as good as when Kurt sang it. It just wouldn't
@@lightbeforethetunnel I could talk about this shit with you forever, I agree with you. His chord progressions are what really strike me.
