This is hands down my favourite Nirvana track. It distills everything great about that band, the urgency, the sense of irony and humour, the best rhythm section in rock backing the most iconic frontman. School is pure class.

I thought the lyrics were ”why do you believe in just my luck” cause it would resemble that some people are born to be good at school and some have learning issues so they are born to be bad at school.
Yeah and ”no recess”, I think it means detention. The kids who are born to be bad at school or dont care about school usually get into trouble and then in detention.
Hey i love nirvana too, but honestly they were not known around the world even after nevermind, but when kurt died it attracted new fans, and btw how could u say they are better than the stones, led zeppelin, THE BEATLES, or even Queen
Agreed. To say they are better or not is just a matter of personal opinion, not fact. I don't think they're the best band ever, but they were the most real and most authentic band ever. They weren't rock stars. Just three guys who never changed and kept it real. That's why no one ever seen their type before in the music industry and probably never will.
Collin Scarborough eheemmm Niravana is good at something they did theyre type of music theyre style while zeppelin queen stones were just rock bands and yet in onlu few years nirvana explodes became super famous stones and zeppelin were pretty long on the scene while nirvana was just a few years think about that a little bit
That made me cringe. Let's ignore that grunge was a thing. Kurt helped bring punk rock to the mainstream. Stick to saying that. After all kurt was a punk rocker and thats what nirvana's music was/is...PUNK ROCK!
I almost cry every time I hear him yell it....just gives me so much energy. I am studying for an exam and I was completely just blanking out at the screen....I had to listen to this track to give me energy.
This isn't just music, this is passion. You can see the guitar take kurt away like he's being lead to fight it with his emotion, like the guitar is leading him far into a place of ecstasy yet he's trying to over come his enemy, this isn't just art, it's everything that music was, but has yet to come.
There is no such thing as better when comparing bands thats stupid, all bands have their unique qualities that make them great, you can't compare one band to another
The rumors of him being in a hospital about ready to die just days before this performance, is why he is pushed onstage in a wheelchair, wearing a blonde wig and hospital gown like he's about ready to die. Lol.
As someone who had the worst high school experience, especially in the last year of high school, I love the rage from this song. The lyrics are simple but anyone who shares the pain that the people in that place made you feel like utter shit feels these lyrics to their core, especially when he screams out “You’re in high school again”. It’s like he’s letting all the trauma he endured out in this song
And I know the town he grew up in, Aberdeen, WA - racist macho rednecks is par for the course there, I'm sorry to say. A bad place for a thoughtful, sensitive soul like Kurt,
For all you people this song is about kurt not being ever able to escape school mentality, popularity, bullies, hierachy. 'No recess' is a metaphor for the fact their was no break from school ever. Kurt looked at all the people and thought 'fuck i'm still at school'. It's a beatiful metaphor for how trapped he felt in society. This is where the rage and beauty of Nirvana's music stems from.
as a teenager and a beginner guitarist I've heard this guitar tone years ago and I feel like it changed my view of music forever. Even though I listen (and play) completely different music now, I still think it's the most intense, raw and authentic guitar tone of the entire alternative rock history. Listening to it is a musical equivalent of scratching a very itchy place with sand paper lol, i love it
Nirvana was the best rock band of all time. And to think they accomplished that title in just a few years. They can't be topped. People have tried... they just can't
Certainly the best band of the last 30 years. Cobain’s songwriting is underrated if anything. The guy was basically Lennon and Mccartney tier yet he just gets lumped in with the Seattle scene.
@MS-eb8cf Exactly! If anything, he's superior to Lennon / McCartney given he was doing both roles by himself, and he did it all in much, much less time. I realize it may sound absurd to say they're the #1 best of all time, but it's honestly the conclusion I come to. There's just something about Kurt's singing and songwriting that can't be topped, despite the fact its not particularly complex or technically precise. But with his style of music, that actually made it better not worse. If you got the best technically trained singer to perform Lithium or Smells Like Teen Spirit, for example... it wouldn't be anywhere as good as when Kurt sang it. It just wouldn't
@@lightbeforethetunnel I could talk about this shit with you forever, I agree with you. His chord progressions are what really strike me. The utter genius involved with coming up with a progression nobody has used before like Lithium or Sappy that sound so incredibly good..his sense of melody.. I could go on. Don’t ever lose your Nirvana passion friend 👍
This song is unironically one of my favorites of Nirvana. To me, it reminds me of how all my classmates from high school moved past from those school years and thriving while I’m still having a mundane life, not a thing has changed and I haven’t moved on since I graduated years ago and how exhausting it gets with no recess. And every time I’m reminded of that and my past, I’m in high school again. It’s both annoying and tragicomic and this song totally represents that for me.
I did!!! because Nickelback and Creed are the greatest bands of all time, and hate anything that doesn't have to do with them. thats why!! DISLIKED YOUR COMMENT TOO!!
I love how the melody and chords in the chorus bring that intense contrast between tough emotion (first more angry 'no recess' more focused on 'now') and then deep desperation emotion (second longer more heart broken 'no recess')
damnEh86 He was not, he thought for a time he was gay as some kind of excuse for being somewhat different in school back then but he never experimented with such stuff
They completely changed everything back then. I was already in my late 20's in 1992. I witnessed The transition from hair metal to grunge. It was glorious. I regret that I never saw them live. They didn't do the New York area that I know of. But if they did I had a 7 year old at home to take care of by myself. He's 35 now and loves Nirvana.
Verse (the only line): Well, would you believe it's just my luck? Chorus: No recess!! Bridge: You're in high school again. That's the whole lyrics. Kurt didn't care about lyrics at all and yet somehow it works. Hahahaha
How is it possible to miss someone I never even knew
Because he showed us so much of himself in his music. We feel like we DID know him.
Big Al well you wouldn’t believe it but it’s just your luck.
I just like to think I knew him in my past life

this is like literally the easiest nirvana song after something in the way and territorial pissings
how good were/are Nirvana seriously, anyone who never got into them are really miss'n out. big time.
How good were/are Nirvana seriously....SERIOUSLY GOOD! No argument here.
Kurt - The heart and soul.
Krist - The stage presence and charisma.
Dave - The energy and power.
