      BTW... I've seen other videos where they cut these oil filters open... On one of these, the Wix had only 50% of the filter media compared to the Mobil One... OEM always best in modern engines. I even avoid, if possible, buying the Denso stuff even though they are the OEM manufacturer.
      I bought Denso air filters and noticed subtle differences and, on my Prius, I saw a negative change in MPG. Since I pulled my OEM Toyota/Denso air filter early, I just put it back in and the next tank regained that mileage, even with 8,000 mi on the air filter already.

    On my GX470 I suck (vacuum) the oil out trough the dipstick, super easy! About 99.5% of the oil comes out and I use motorcraft oil filter that has been reviewed and proven to be one of the best filters out there.($4). When it comes to oil I also had used Chevron, Havoline, Supertech every 3-4k miles or so to keep the engine clean because is so cheap and easy to do it. I've done the same procedure through the dipstick on many new S550, S450, E350 MBenz some have 250k miles without any issues. Some new modern engines with oil sump pump requires the same procedures as a standard oil change and some will have leave a much greater porcentage of old oil remaining inside.

    Can confirm, trying to do an oil change on my 09 GX in the driveway is a total pain in the ass because of that f**king skid plate. (Mine spends most of its time in the mountains so it’s gotta stay) Trying to line it up right to reinstall with one arm while getting the bolts up in the f**ker with a ratchet and extension with the other is enough to make me want to burn it all to the ground. Otherwise, best rig I’ve owned and I’m at 225k miles.

    • @MaximumDIYGarage
      @MaximumDIYGarage 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have an 09 GX too and totally agree with your comment. The solution to this is to get a Fumoto drain valve and the skid plate can stay on as long as you modify it a little with a metal cut off wheel to allow the access on the driver side for the filter change. Otherwise you have to use ramps or jack up the front to remove those skid plates easier. I feel your pain, man. It never lines up well on first try, 😝!

    • @MaximumDIYGarage
      @MaximumDIYGarage 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Ryan Martinage: well, technically Prado is a poor man’s GX 470. Prado 120 can be had with a 2.7L I4 ( like in lowest trim Tacoma), a 3.4L V6 from a 3rd gen 4 runner or Taco, a 4.0L V6 from Taco, 4th gen 4Runner or FJ Cruiser, or a 3.0L diesel KZTE - the only reason I would consider a Prado! Only GX came with 2UZ V8. Just saying.

The only way to make sure is to do it yourself! I don’t off-road. Wondering if I should remove mine and leave it off like this person? Great idea. Next time, I will think about cutting/modifying the skid plate so I can get to the filter, though doing this kind of surgery on my baby will be like cutting off my own damage finger….don’t know if I have the guts to do it. The filter looks easy to remove, but it is very difficult to get a wrench on. No store bought wrench seems to fit a OEM filter. In the video he uses his hand, but after only putting it on firmly my hand, it tightens itself so that you will bust a brain vessel trying to remove it by hand next change. I finally chopped one of my huge assortment of filter wrenches. A small hoop style with a handle chopped to a couple of inches works great! I should sell the “design.”

    Very nice video! Thank you. I have a 2006 GX470 with 168K miles and have changed the oil myself for years. The damn skid plate (or gravel shield) is a pain. Yeah, the bolts like to eventually strip. Have not decided to leave it off yet but sure would make it easier and quicker to change the oil. Not sure how much longer I'll have this beast, it is now setting the dreaded 0418 and 2445 codes indicating that the emissions air pump has failed. Doubtful that I will be paying the $4000+ to have it repaired. Relatively inexpensive parts but insane labor costs.

      While we can argue that synthetic would be a better choice, quite a number of vehicles have gone a million miles without any major repairs, including vehicles that only used conventional motor oil. Of course you would almost certainly change conventional oil at shorter intervals.

    • @brianbumgardner8704
      @brianbumgardner8704 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@stevensevek6151 Absolutely, as long as you change it at regular intervals and use the recommended viscosity your engine should last a long time.

    • @rightlanehog3151
      @rightlanehog3151 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@stevensevek6151 You do MORE oil changes and spend MORE money with conventional oil while subjecting your engine to far more friction and frictional losses. In harsher climates, conventional oil congeals at lower temps and vaporizes in the heat yet it is just as good or good enough? BTW is anyone arguing against iridium plugs that go over 100K miles or coolant that lasts 5 years and saying - use copper core plugs and change them every 12,000 miles or change the good old green antifreeze once a year? For some really weird TH-cam reason, totally obsolete oil is still acceptable in 2020 when synthetic has been running circles around it for nearly 50 years. Should we tear off the coils over each plug and retrofit a distributor cap? How about leaded gas? Is it due for a comeback? What about carburetors , are they just as good as fuel injection? While everyone is certainly entitled to their own opinions they are certainly NOT entitled to their own facts.

      So you just skip draining the oil and just move it along? Unfortunately a few quick lube places have a reputation for charging the client for the work that wasn’t done cause it’s too time consuming. Be smart, do your oil change and avoid running a risk of stripped out drain bolts/oil pans and sludge due to failure to drain oil completely.
