Bought my 2005 GX with only 117k miles just 3 weeks ago for $10k and absolutely love it so far! I’m the third owner, and everything he says is true, the first two owners literally only ever took it to Lexus for maintenance every 3k miles (shown on the CarFax). Can’t wait to lift it and take it on the trails around SoCal
We bought our brand new in 2007 for $50k after our 4yrs old Landrover Disco 2 broke down on highway with only 40k on it. Our GX470 now has almost 200k only problem was alternator replaced once. It’s everything like u mention in the video great in outdoor snow and comfortable as everyday car. Wife wish she can change car but it still running strong.
I plan on buying one of these real soon! I probably won’t do any major modifications early on, since this vehicle is already incredibly capable, a simple set of off road tires will go a long way.
Nice video. We love our 06 GX. Minor correction, but the air suspension is unrelated to the sport/comfort settings. That setting adjusts the shocks. Air suspension does two things, levels the vehicle when additional weight is added and raises and lowers the back end for increased ground clearance or easier loading. You will typically see both systems deleted when custom suspension is added.
I own a lexus gx470, I got into 4 car accidents with it 2 were my fault still rides like the day I bought it and has 300k miles with no major issues other than the accident repair 🤣
Timing belt/water pump, spark plugs, fresh fluids, maybe start thinking about the alternator sometime soon. Wow. These vehicles when set up properly can get you comfortably to the top of most Colorado 4x4 trails (to put things in perspective if you know what terrain that is). Good choice
Congratulations on your new Lexus. It truly is an “ideal” vehicle. They are too often overlooked. I’ve considered them myself. But, wife prefers the RX. So, as I would never be rock crawling or off-the-track camping (with her).... I, or sorry ... WE would much prefer a low mileage RX with the “Ultra-premium package” (Mark Levinson, semi-aniline leather, more wood (steering), heads-up, .. every option), than the less attractive and much more fuel guzzling GX470. But... if my wife didn’t prefer a chocolate on her pillow at a hotel with a concierge and valet parking... I’d be all over this GX! I’m with you brother, I simply LOVE it! Thanks for a well thought out and edited video. Nice touches.
Kellington Link If you can swing it, the RX with the driving assist features was pretty sweet when I had one as a loaner. It dealt with stop and go traffic which was really nice at times. It was a sweet car.
Another advantage of the GX is that 6500# towing capacity. If you plan to tow regularly consider keeping the suspension stock. Now I know that's not the trendiest path to take cause everybody wants to put on waaay more off road suspension than they probably will ever use but hear me out, a properly functioning rear airbag system will keep your rig level regardless of the load. It's nice to be able to lower the back a couple of inches when loading heavy things in cargo area or raise it a couple of inches when off road for clearance. As far as the sport/comfort modes, I find that sport is what I use 90% of the time but when the paved road ends and you get into the washboards on gravel or on a trail or even just a rough stretch on the interstate comfort mode is the way to go.
One thing to note is that the 03-04 models can use regular 87 gas, the rest need premium. We own an 04 and an 08, since we drive fairly conservatively they drive the same.
04and03 are way better. I see cars as, how much to swap an engine if all goes bad.. engine for those two years 1.5k .. 05 and up.. 3.5k.. plus 03.04 has tranny dipstick..the rest dont. Yall can keep your 40 extra horses.. 235 is enough for me , plus the v8 has great torque to pull out quick.
Guys... I picked up one by chance for 2 grand 2 months ago because a neighbor was moving outta the country.... air bags went out and I started researching that and fell down a beautiful rabbit whole of info!... I'm love with it .... my example is absolutely flawless...one owner! no dash lights.... only minor exterior problems.... was gonna sell to carvana but nope.... ima keep it!....
I ended up buying a 2015 GX460. I cannot express how smooth and capable of an offroading vehicle this thing is. Gas mileage is the only thing that sucks. Otherwise it's very well made. Can't wait to modify it.
All FACTS Bro...I just grabbed an 04 with 160k last week for 5,700. It’s really a Swiss Army Knife. I’ve owned a few LR’s and P38 Range Rover. This truck has withstood the test of time! Phenomenal...
Just picked up a mint condition 04' in NJ for $7900. 130K miles with 100% dealer service records. Timing belt/WP just replaced. Truck has been driven 10K miles in the last 10 years. So pleased with this purchase. I've driven Lexus cars over a million miles in the last 20 years. This truck is a beast!
Picked up an 07 gx470 5 years ago on the cheap, from my mother who wanted to downsize, loved the vehicle overall, hated the commuter MPG, it became my daughters first car 2 years ago, it will become my sons first car early next year...I originally thought I’d trade it in after my sons done with it but I’m thinking now I’ll hang onto it as an extra vehicle... over the last few years multiple people have told me it’s a great off road vehicle but I never really thought about it much. Mine is a black 07 with tan interior and 176k on it. It has an aftermarket tow hitch and I was told it has a towing package with a transmission cooler and an oversized high output alternator. I have no idea if the towing package is true and if that was even offered from the factory. Maybe someone else in the know can chime in on that.
This week i just bought a 2006 with 241k miles for $7k. I'm the 3rd owner. First was an old lady, second was a young guy who owned it for 30k miles. Both did all the maintenance required. There's absolutely nothing i have to do mechanically. It literally drives like new. Interior is almost perfect. The only thing is the seat needs some light repair. I'm so excited to enjoy this for years to come!
I bought an 06 Toyota Sequoia about a year ago for pretty much all the reasons he is saying to buy the GX470. Sequoias are basically a slightly larger version on a GX470, and they are both amazing vehicles. I bought it as a 4x4 with lockers and it is super capable off-road. The only real problem I've had with off-roading it is breaking ball joints, but that is a pretty simple fix if you can do it yourself. They have soo much space with the third row taken out. I just thought Id let you all know too also look at 1st get sequoias if you can't find a deal on a Lexus. I got mine with 255,000 miles on it for 4,400, so you can definitely find good deals on them also.
I absolutely loved my dad's sequoia. I still give him a hard time 8 years later for trading it for a dodge. That thing scootted for a 5000+ pound vehicle and rode like a benz while doing it
This car is the best!! I’m in love with my 08 GX470 84,000. $10,000. Excellent service records! Do your research, you can’t beat this SUV! Yes make sure you have some dough, it drinks gas like a pig! LOL
CA Farm Girl: I will buy a new vehicle in a few days and would love to get the gx470, but the gas mileage is why I probably will not despite seeing some of these vehicles listed in my price range. You wrote your comment about the gas mileage 2 years ago, so I can only imagine how the gas prices are hitting now. Plus, I expect gas prices to start going up again soon because of what is going on with Russia and the big push for electric vehicles.
@@Tes7000 Stop being scared unnecessarily. The war will be over before you know it and peace would return around the world again. The US will be just fine too. Just go for the GX if you really love it cos it would last forever.
DONE! 2008 GX 470 and its awesome! Congrats on a great vehicle! First thing I did was take the side steps off. Second thing I did was change the manifolds because they were leaking. Third thing I did was change the timing belt water pump. Did lots of driving around with three-quarter worn tires and found the thing was absolutely amazing Offroad. Then I went out and bought absolutely stock replacement tires. Yes stock replacement tires. These work plenty good enough for me. Enjoy! LOTS. Of places to do mild off reading in NJ.
Come on now in the rest of the world it’s call the LAND CRUISER PRADO, go see how people in Middle East use those vehicles then you know how capable those vehicles are.
Have a 2003 GX and love it. One owner before us, dealer serviced by them and us. Runs like a top with ~120,000 miles. LOVE it. And it can offroad. Was 4 Wheeler Mag SUV of the Year for TWO years, '03 & 04 and for good reason.
Just to to add, if you're considering any lexus product PLEASE use the Lexus drivers page and check your VIN prior to purchase...This is massively more detailed then Carfax...Carfax is very limited...Lexus drivers page will save you a lot of heartache and stress...BUT it is only good for Lexus branded vehicles...Never buy without seeing it and driving it...especially now getting as popular as ever, folks are selling in unworthy conditions lying about many things about the vehicle...DO YOUR HOMEWORK...BUT GET ONE!!!!!....will not regret it...
Pro tip: the dashboard was recalled so if you find one with a terrible dashboard, buy it for the discount you get because the dashboard is cracked and drive it straight to lexis dealer for a free dashboard replacement
I converted my GX470 into a sexy , heavily , modified off road GX470. The money that I invested in it will make your stomach hurt. I’ll put it in this way, everything mechanical was replaced and exterior accessories added to the top of the line! 🔥🔥🔥
I bought a 206 for 6 grand and some change. it's in mint condition and I absolutely love it! I also own it's little brother, a 2003 4Runner limited. it's got 2014 thousand miles on it and runs like new! Either one of these vehicles are off road and post-apocalypse ready!

Thanks for making this vid! I bought my 09 GX for $5k a year ago with 210,000 miles and half a front bumper and I just got offered $9.5k for it with 230,000 miles and still a half a front bumper. Got my Truck Blowin up like GameStop🚀
I picked an '08 up 2 years ago. I absolutely love this truck. I got rid of the stock shocks and replaced them with Bilstein HD (blue and yellow), cornfed 1.5in front spacer, TRD gunmetal wheels, and new tires. I'll get to the rear air ride eventually....when I do a proper lift. For now, for my purposes, it's fine the way it is. Only complaint, mpg.
We have a 2005 that we leased new, loved it and wife wanted to keep it so we bought it. It now has 167,000 Starbucks miles, never used off road and my oldest daughter is driving it as her first car. It is in mint condition! Reliable, forget about it. No issues!
Ideal Media I do want to upgrade to the larger LX570, so I’m on the fence if I want to sell my GX for one yet. The GX is truly a great vehicle, I feel I would regret it if I sell it.
Subscribed, can't wait to see you build it.... BTW the 470 was the sister truck to the V8 4x4 Toyota 4Runner, made side by side on the same production line. Incredible drivetrain, mine has over 300K miles from new with zero issues.
I bought a cheap 2001 Pathfinder 3.5 SE 4x4 with a 5 speed manual. Honestly only bought it because at the time, I lived in Denver, and well, that city killed my Honda Accord, and I needed a car that could handle snow. It's 250hp with 5 speed manual is a ton of fun, (not sure why the manual has 250 and the auto has 240hp, but that's how they were made). I know manuals aren't the best choice for off-roading. But, this is the same motor that Nissan took 5 years to develop for the 350Z, (before Renault bought them). The Z has 300hp, but they gave the Pathfinder version more torque down low. Easy to get the rear end out in 2nd gear. And dirt roads are fun! The balance of the car was well engineered. It's always straightens back up when yogurt off throttle in 2WD. Only used 4x4 a few times. Originally in the snow. But also on Pensacola Beach when I parked on a soft shoulder. I didn't even give it gas to get out of the sand. I just released the clutch and it idled out of the thick sand. They only built the 2nd Gen Pathfinder with the 3.5 all aluminum V6 for 4 years before it was replaced by Renault's cost-effective boxy crap feast that is the 3rd Gen Pathfinder. Since I've bought it I've had the following installed: Sport exhaust (supposed to add 10% more HP), 25% stiffer KYB rear shocks, 25% stiffer Monroe front struts, and rear trailing arms. I bought it from a mechanic who had replaced the motor with a used unit for $5K (drive away price so more like $4,400). Also slapped in a sport air filter, (supposed to at 10% more HP. Haven't had it on a dyno, but it feels like more than 250hp). Not many after market products for Pathfinders. But, I know a metal fab guy who will build all the off road goodies for it when I'm ready. And I bought a nice cheap set of black Vision Turbine rims from Discount Tire on sale for $415 out the door. The car has 225K on the body and the motor had 102K when I bought it. It's really fun to rack out the revs to 6.5K. The motor sounds wicked with the 4-valve heads humming away. If you can find a 5 speed manual version of a 2001-2004 Pathfinder, get it! It was the last car Nissan made that was 100% Japanese engineered. I looked at cheap Lexus 4x4s when I bought it. And, back in 2016, there weren't many $5K, (that's all I had to spend at the time) options that were as capable as my Pathfinder. It's not as luxurious as the Lexus. But, I like the Bose system on it with my little radio transfer Bluetooth thingy. Making a lot more money these days. And I suppose I could get something new or an upgraded used 4x4. But, the truth is, there are no 5 speed manual 4x4 SUVs available anywhere. So far, at 20 years old, it's been a forever car. One of the reasons I bought it, is I know a lady with a 1st get Pathfinder with a V6 and it has 450K + miles on it. It's till runs perfectly. Hope Nissan gets back as synonymous with Toyota. They used to be just as reliable. With all the mods I've done, I've probably spent another $3,000. I also like that it's small. And if need be, I can steer with my right foot by getting the rear end out. I average about 17mpg. Get's 21 on the hwy!
The manual version had more horsepower as you said but less torque wheras the automatic had 10 hp less but more torque. I have the last year of the Infiniti Qx4 and honestly the smoothness of the engine and ride are very much Lexus like....bought mine for 3grand and it was worth every penny. I like this Lexus though and would consider buying it if my Qx4 fell apart but that is not likely.

He is not wrong. I picked up a 2008 with silver paint and gray leather with the dark burgandy wood trim a few months back. Just under 150,000 on it. Lots of power, fun to drive, quality everywhere, the sound and gps are dated but work fine, connects to my phone, but no streaming music...not a big deal to me. And I fit , 4Runners are a sardine can for me. Under $10,000 of course! picked up the Asin timing and waterpump kit, and new Continental hoses and serpentine belt. Taking it on the beach soon after a tire upgrade
What we sometimes do in Australia, is we import the the motor from the USA and then just drop it in. Because the 120 Prado (1-GRFE (petrol) or KDJ-120R (diesel)) come standard with 180L (47.6gallon) fuel tanks (2 x 90L), that means that we have double the range as the spare tyre is mounted on the rear door.
Quibble: The Comfort-Sport knob does NOT do anything with the rear airbags. It electronically adjusts the dampening of the stock struts. The height control switches affect the airbags. If yours rides soft at all settings then your stock shocks are blown and you need to replace. I went from stock to Bilsteins to back to stock on mine. I have KDSS, no lift, and only slightly larger tires and it goes anywhere I need it to.
Thanks for the clarification! I'll be swapping in Icon stage 1's so sadly I'll lose that knob, but good to know it wasn't the air suspension it was adjusting.
I have an 03 & an 04 gx470 and I have always thought they were the best kept secret. Now the cat is out. Absolutely great vehicles except the gas mileage, airbags and stereo.
As the owner of multiple Lexus vehicles over the last couple decades, the only points of criticism I have are around the thin, easily chippable body paint, and the not-so-durable seat leather, as compared to other luxury marques.
YES!!!! I knew I wasn't crazy. I bought an IS350 last year and I have had leaves, LEAVES!!! Scratch the paint or chip it. Like WHAT?!?!?! I had a 99 Corvette that I could take up to insane speeds on the highway and it would eat rock dust with ease. Little, if any paint damage! How the hell does a leaf at 35 miles an hr cut that deep into my paint? I mean, it looks like someone keyed the bloody thing. Lexus paint is trash. Pretty. But trash when it comes to durability.
Great video and helpful information. Your opinions/facts helped me decide on which vehicle to purchase for my next overlanding build. I was waffling between a full size pickup like the Dodge PowerWagon or one of the many 4x4 SUVs and have now decided on the GX470. Question that comes to mind maybe this forum can help me understand is 'Why do away with the KDSS system?' I've seen their are products available for improving on the KDSS system in the form of the pillows/airbags, solenoids/gauges so why not just make the KDSS system better and closer to 'bullet proof'? What I have heard is that when this type of leveling system fails it leaves you stranded and with very few options.... Opinions or real life experiences are appreciated...
Great video! I have a 4th Gen 4Runner V8. Watch out for manifold cracks. Will make a ticking sound on a cold engine with accelerating. The V8 is amazing!
Same here! We have had our 05 GX since 2008. Wife drove it for 10 years and never wanted a newer car, just loved it too much. Started a long commute and a great deal on a VW diesel, we now have a third car. It’s so bulletproof that we are also keeping it and slowly building it from soccer mom to overlander. Very slow as in only added AT tires so far, but have taken it off the beaten paths already with little drama. Kept up with lifted Jeeps!!! Jeep guys were shocked I kept up, loved their reactions as the GX just pushed through.
i bought mine 2 months ago, 2003 246k miles is in good shape, i still not belive i bought for 3500$ and i think the last owner still no belive he sold for that price... i drive land cruisers since i had 12 years old and this is the best, i think ill never sell it
It's bulletproof except for the cracking/melting dash issues and timing belt that needs to be replaced every 90K. 2005+ had the VVT and that is desirable as it bumped the engine up 35HP. The airbags are not cheap to replace, so many swap to coil springs. Other than that it's a sweet ride and cheaper than a V8 4runner.
True about the dash but what is amazing is Lexus had a recall. I had my 05 dash replaced in 2018!!! Find me a manufacturer that stands behind their vehicles like that.
I can vouch for all these. Since ive owned my 2003 (purchased at 70K in 2008) i’ve had dash replaced under warranty, ridiculously expensive air suspension converted, and as of last week, it seems im on my second timing belt. While I was close to letting her go, this video reminded me why I love it! 😆
I bought my 1st GX470 (2004) last year. I blew the engine. Do to not getting all metal shards out from when a pully messed up and it cut timing belt. anyways i was looking for another GX and I bought in FEB 2020 after 3 or 4 months looking. I wanted my 2nd one to be 08-09 do to the better looking wood trim IMO. I was able to finally find one and picked up 2009 GX with 136,000 miles for $13,500. most 08-09 go for 15K plus. this is a gem 1 owner all service done on time at Lexus dealer and was traded in for a brand new Land Rover.

A good point, I'll be happy to sell my functioning air bag system to whoever wants to tow!
I have an 04. It is awesome despite being 16 years old. Comfortable and quiet, powerful V8, extremely capable.
They certainly don't feel as old as they are!

Outside of my 4runner this is as good as it gets. Especially since the Landcruisers are so hard to find
1st gen sequoias aren't bad off-road either
Had a LC, now have GX. LC was heavier and had longer travel and worse on road handling.
Will keep the GX forever.
If you spend close to the same amount of effort on your GX as you seem to on your hair, this build should be pretty epic.

When starting the car...u just turn key a little and leave...the car auto start itself...part of the cool features of the gx470...
My 05 4runner had that also
How much was it?

All FACTS Bro...I just grabbed an 04 with 160k last week for 5,700. It’s really a Swiss Army Knife. I’ve owned a few LR’s and P38 Range Rover. This truck has withstood the test of time! Phenomenal...
I have one and I love it, only thing I’ll be adding to mine is a supercharger
Let us know how that goes, that sounds real fun!
Totally agree. LOVE our 2005 GX470. This goes through anything.
I own an 05 gx 470 276k miles. Runs through snow like a beast, rides like a dream. Only major - head gasket replacement due to tiny leak at 265k.
This guy is so convincing... I bought one after seeing his and now I have an X wife bit more room for overlandiing
hahahaha yay?
This week i just bought a 2006 with 241k miles for $7k. I'm the 3rd owner. First was an old lady, second was a young guy who owned it for 30k miles. Both did all the maintenance required. There's absolutely nothing i have to do mechanically. It literally drives like new. Interior is almost perfect. The only thing is the seat needs some light repair. I'm so excited to enjoy this for years to come!
That's a good price! I'm currently looking at 08 with 196k miles for 4k. Sounds like a steal!
Might be a good option since GX's are so expensive now.
I absolutely loved my dad's sequoia. I still give him a hard time 8 years later for trading it for a dodge. That thing scootted for a 5000+ pound vehicle and rode like a benz while doing it
Glad to see Jay Cutler doing well.
hah!
Haha Jay Cutler is much more monotone.. 😆

I’m in love with my 08 GX470 84,000. $10,000. Excellent service records! Do your research, you can’t beat this SUV! Yes make sure you have some dough, it drinks gas like a pig! LOL
Timing belt was already done when I bought it...bonus!!
Wheels and tires I'm down to 13 mpg... ouch.
Prefer the X5. Better gas mileage.

This is known as the toyota land cruiser prado in the middle east. And they have always been ridiculously overpriced
I can’t wait to drive this car cause it’s gonna be my first car!
In Latin America they are sold as Toyota Prado, I driven those when I was in the Dominican republic and they are fun to drive.
For sure this is going to be my first car 👍🏽
