PROGRESS ON OUR NEW CHICKEN COOP

- This week we make more progress on the chicken coop. It's really coming along and we can't wait to get our first animals on the farm.
Hi there :) We're Marc & Allys, a couple who left the UK in 2021 to search of somewhere we could build a homestead. This led us to one of Portugal's beautiful natural parks.
Self-sufficiency is important to us, whilst we're not off grid, we're keen to rely less and less on external systems. Follow us as we take on many things for the first time - learning as we go. DIY, Gardening, Growing our own food, Homestead'ing, Studying our land, Learning about permaculture and other farming techniques. We also plan to regenerate our abandoned land and create a thriving ecosystem - which isn't an easy task given we're in Portugal's hottest region (Alentejo!)
Follow us on our journey as we face new challenges, and acquire new skills!

Best darn five star hen house in the county.
Congratulations Mark. You have succeeded in constructing the most complicated chicken coop ever built on TH-cam 😂!!🎉
Hi guys you did build a luxury chicken house for your chickens they will be very happy cheers guys 👍👍👋👋
When it comes to learning from doing things the progression is the right way. Chicken coop, log cabin, house, mansion. The coop is looking really good and what you gain from making those mistakes will always pay off later, plus it's your chicken coop on your land so it's perfect.
The window looks amazing Alice, worth your efforts for sure.👍
Alex
Good job on the window, and the vent is a lovely find. Chicken are going to be living in the lap of luxury.
❤ your love for those birds is fantastic. You will have a lot of eggs. Love your vlog. Good luck and good summer! Peace from Oslo
God bless you both 🙏❤❤
Great job.The chicken coop is looking beautiful.👍🌞
The whole coop looks brilliant; window, fan grill, nesting box. Next to my own DIY "oops" carpentry skills, you are a master carpenter. 🙂
Ally great job on the window those chickens are going to have one fancy home
Nice nesting box, but perhaps having made it to extend the entire back from corner post to corner post, instead of just the middle. Depending on how may chicken you purchase you'll need at least one nest box for every four hens.
I hope your door is on the side where it leads into the 'former poly tunnel aka chicken run'. If the door is too heavy the hinges will sag after a while. Two smaller doors with there own hinges, would have been better.
If you're planning on using chicken wire just remember it's not entirely predator proof. Use hardware cloth instead. It maybe more money but it's worth every penny.
Very happy to see the braces on the legs.
Take care, be well cuddles to the pups ~🤗💝Lacy, Mike & Hamish🐾
Great progress on the chicken coop guys 👍
I can’t believe what you have done on the chicken coop…
Royal chicken coop…
Is there carpet going in…
Amazing creative job
Seeing you using the table saw to put that frame together made me think that you could make a fold down work bench on the side of your wood storage shed. It could fold down and enclose the bottom half of the shed, it'll make working with the longer timbers a lot easier.👍
Great idea!
Wow well done 👍🏻 starting to come together. Love the window Alice 👌 don’t be hard on yourself Mark your doing an awesome job
That is looking fantastic! Well done
Your chicken coop is looking beautiful!
Love how you are engineering this chicken coop. So well thought out, and brave of you to figure it all out in front of everyone. Not sure if elderberries are a thing in Portugal but they are great to plant near chicken runs. The chickens love the dropped berries and they are really good for them, plus you can make a nice elderberry syrup for yourselves that is wonderful for colds. Loads of good stuff for you and the chickens. Keep up the good work and maybe get some sunscreen.
Always enjoy watching. Great job, both. I want to be one of your hens. 😂
A veritable Taj Mahal for the girls🤣🤣👌👌👏👏
It looks amazing. The timber cladding is also adding a lot of strength the way you've done it. I doubt that you'll be having any problems with such tiny gaps, like you say, it helps with a bit more ventilation as well.👍
This is definately an all singing and dancing chicken coop for sure. Almost too good for chickens.
Wow, it's beautiful!!
The most comfortable chickens in Portugal will live at your farm!
Very enjoyable video. Thank you for sharing.
What is messing is a bathroom for the chickens ❤
The chickens will have a great space when that's done!
Thanks for the video!
Most situations you want to use your longer pieces where you can end up with shorter pieces in the end that are left over rather than the other way around.
Great job so far love it
Gonna be great - hope the chickens appreciate all your efforts!
Move the apple tree or coop. Probably should have made the door hinge down (up/down) Vs in/out. Would have also used chicken wire for visibility on the shaded portions. Window came out well. Learn by doing.
FYI: Overlap boards have a pre-cut channel for the overlap to nest on each other with no gap.
😊
Thanks for your vid 😇💟💟💟 Love and bless you guys, good work 👍😁 a neel gun would be handy, chicken coop looks really good 😊👍
THE SOLAR PANEL IS USEFUL, BUT ALSO WITH SMALL SCRAP ENGINES FROM PCS YOU CAN TAKE ADVANTAGE OF WIND ENERGY FOR LIGHTING WITH 1 BATTERY AND LED LAMPS IF YOU NEED ANY TIPS TELL ME
Everything looks great, but please add more ventilation!
Looks amazing and how exiting that you will have chickens !!!! (P.S. we thinking now why we done such a small coop .... as we want more chickens ;) But you could extend in a future if you would need bigger.. )
Normally the nesting box opens from the top so that you can reach down to get the eggs, but I guess your plan is going to be different, and curious to see how it works out for you.
You must think of a rim in front of the nesting box to keep the straw inside and a platform on witch the chickens can sit at night time. Otherwise I think it's a very cool coop.
The window is to beautiful for the chicken coop. Are you going to separate the nesting box in sections?
Looking good. Interested to know the cost of the coop. You may want to get an electric sliding door. We had a manual door for a while. They day it was not closed, we lost 8 chucks to foxes.
👍
O yes I am going to see my beautiful cockrell in the chicken coop😅❤
I think even with the ventilation and fan, it will become too hot in summer for the chickens during the day. Or will the chickens be running free during summer? Perhaps consider insulating the roof.
I've seen worse places on AirBnB. Good work, chaps!
Don't you think that the nest box should open on top because the nest stuff will fall out and also the front part need a plank for the same reason .
Won't the eggs roll out onto the ground when you flip that panel down?
Couple things, i like your videos. For safety, please, avoid using gloves while using a table saw, it makes cuts very unsafe. Furthermore, you could work smarter by buying couple jigs such as a dow jig, and a pocket hole jigs. Other than that your work looks ok
are you going to use as xchicken tractor to,in the permaculture way
Test your soil, what is it telling you?
Youre making the camera wet😂.
Next project you have more experience en it wil be better. I cant wait
Nice work!
Simple mistakes, is learning
