Another excellent tutorial. I wish I would have seen this video before I installed my camera. I installed my camera where you put your GPS module and ran the cables along the drivers side. I hard wired mine to the power port in the dash. Had I known there was a way to make the center console power port power on and off with the car I would have hard wired it there. I also have a rear camera that I ran the wires along the headliner back up to the camera in the windshield. I am going to start looking for videos you may have already done before I start installing stuff. Keep up the great work.
Even though this video is a few years old, it really made my day today. I have a '19 Challenger R/T Scat Pack 392 Widebody fully optioned. My son bought me an Aukey dashcam for Xmas. It was a nice day today so I decided to get it installed. I mounted the cam just right of the mirror mount with the cam level with the mirror so I can't see it from the driver's side but it's easy to see and work the buttons from the passenger side. Just FYI, There is a sensor window on the driver's-side forward-face of the mirror and their's also one on the big mirror-mount housing. If you put a cam right in the front, be aware that it might block this sensor. Maybe some cars don't have it, not sure if it's part of an option package. You know that plastic cover on the passenger end of the dash, where you open the door and then you can see it and it has a air vent, that panel pops right off. Just open the glove box door and grab the end-panel by the inside of the front lower edge and it'll pop off. Then the wire is easy to drop in behind it. After going across under the glove-box to the center console, I didn't like the idea of having a 12V-to-USB adapter with the USB cam-power cable sticking out of the port and being there permanently where my wife's knee could be knocking it and the wire hanging, so instead, I tucked the wire under the console bottom edge along the carpet all the way to the back of the console, then around the back of it, and finally came up on the driver's side just behind the seat. Also, there's a notch (actually two of them) in the top of the console wall so that cables can enter the center console interior space without getting pinched. I put the cam cable in there and then plugged it directly into the lowest of the two USB jacks. The 5VDC of the console USB ports stays on all the time so the camera is always on. It has a parking mode, auto-sleep, time-lapse, motion-sense, and all that stuff so I think I don't need one of those BlackView Power Magic Pro power controllers. If the battery starts to get low, the car ECU will turn off the USB port power on its own. Wish I could recall where I read that so I could confirm it. I also leave an sd-card in a USB adapter plugged into the upper USB port 24/7 and never had an issue. So I'm happy because I didn't have to use a 12V-to-USB adapter at all. I ended up with a completely invisible install, meaning no wires visible anywhere and was done in less than an hour, never did it before, and it was pretty easy because of this video.
Thanks for providing all the detail, It's a great idea using the car's USB port. if you ever find the info on that USB port auto power off I would appreciate it. That opens up a few power options for us Challenger owners. I'll try to search for it as well.
@@WorkPlayDrive I looked into the USB port power issue again today. In the operating manual, it says that the console USB ports "feature active charging which will continue charging your device up to 60 minutes after the ignition is turned off". I doubt very much that the system knows the difference between charging a device or powering something small so I expect that it is based on a simple timer. Today, I plugged a little USB-LED into one port and my dashcam into the other. After exiting the car, the USB-LED went off for a second but came back on. An hour later, it went out and the dashcam was also off. So, that confirms for me that the USB can power the dashcam but not 24/7 like the 12V port can do. Also in light of this, it seems that the BlackView Power Magic Pro power controller (or equivalent) is still the best option if you want your dashcam to remain powered all the time. I think this explains why I found some short clips on the dashcam that occurred at random times during the night. The car must have briefly powered the USB port from time to time, but I have no idea what would trigger it to do so. It was these short (~1min) clips that first led me to believe that the ports stay powered all the time. I thought that the camera motion sense was false triggering. I didn't suspect a power reset.
Thanks for the update and yes the power magic pro would be great. I found I could run a cam for 2 days without issue but I don’t recommend constantly discharging your battery. 8-12 hours should not be an issue. if you want to get fancy the cell link battery pack.
Wow great video. I thought I'd have to physically take off panels lol. Doing this on my 2020 SPWB. I hope manufacturers will start integrating USB ports into the mirrors for dash cams. That would be a good idea.
Thank you. I got my Kronos pro as well. When you install the rear I ran my wire along the headliner and met up with the power wire in the front at the A pilar. Just another 5 minutes for the rear 👍
Installed the rear Krios pro cam last night and love it but now reviewing the footage it's tilted a smidge and my OCD won't let it be. Is it easy enough to remove and reposition with the sticky adhesive? Also need to wire in parking mode, that's a whole other day...

Cool vide, thank you! But if you put the camera into cigarette lighter, how will you charge your phone? This and fear that i will destroy the panels, not allowing me to get the cam.
it all depends on the cam you get. I have a dash cam... BUT after seeing your videos on the Grdian Krios Mini, i want to buy this as an additional camera setup. I absolutely love that I can view it from my phone... even when i'm inside and away from the car! Question: In the event that something happens, does it alert your phone? Can I open the app at any time to view what is going on? Also, if you have it in the cigarette lighter port, is it always on...or is this what you were showing with the battery in the beginning of the video? I absolutely LOVE your install/ how-to videos - they are very informative and you give CLEAR as day instructions. Keep up the great work on the videos! Hope to bump into you again at another Mopar car show!!!
It's plugged in to the always on port and goes into parking mode automatically when the car is still for about 4 minutes. It does not alert your phone, that would be cool but require a lot of power and a constant WiFi connection to your car. They do have dash cams like the owl that use cellular billed monthly to Cloud DVR for you and I believe it sends notifications. I haven't tested those yet and another monthly bill turns me off... I have viewed the camera from inside when I am in range. for example we were parked under the Dr's office and I could pull up my camera feed from the waiting room.
@@WorkPlayDrive does parking mode on the krios mini eat up the battery a lot? I was planning on moving the fuse to always on slot but my challenger doesn't move much this time of the year, I probably drive it once a week. Thanks
Hi is Challenger or batter or ignition by default? If I plug the power into the ash tray while the car is off and the light turns on does that mean it is ignition?
I have a cam in the back. I opted for a second camera vs a 2 cam system. I feel the recording quality is better having 2 cards to write to and also if one goes down you still have the other working.
Work Play Drive thank you for your input. I’m getting a second cam for the back window cause I didn’t like the dual set up. I don’t know if this happens to you but everyone picks on my car from tailgaters, getting cut off, getting dings to highway patrol pulling me over just because. I don’t speed so when I tell the chips I have a cam that makes them back off....
Did you ever cover the Battery Protector you mention in the video? I was thinking of running my dashcam from a battery "brick" (for charging your phone), having it recharge anytime the ignition is on. Curious what others have figured out.
Not yet I’m working on a dual dash Cam roundup that covers buffered parking protection. You can go with the batteries but they are very expensive. You are also limited by your card capacity. How long were you looking to record for?
@@WorkPlayDrive probably 5-10hrs. I know I can leave it constantly powered on from the car but am too concerned I might forget to unplug it before draining my battery way down. This is not my daily driver so it sits several days at a time unless I'm taking a trip. I used my brick successfully to keep it on during a concert I went to. Had it running off it for 7-8 hrs total. Had it in a parking garage. Just looking for an idea I can just wire in and forget about it. Maybe they make an auto-switch that could swap to the brick when my ignition is off.
The Power Magic Pro works for all dash cams with the power plug (cigarette lighter plug) . you can set to stay on for 12, 24, 48 hours it and forget it. the cam will go off when the timer hits the limit or if your battery drops below a set voltage. here is a link amzn.to/2lp0mVo
do you have a rearview camera? if so, can you please help me understand where to connect my rearcam wires to the reverse lamp? or do you have a video on rear light? thanks.
The camera is solid and the footage has been there every time i needed it. I also like how it's practicably invisible, easy to pull the card. The only flaws is on occasion the audio makes a weird blip on really loud situations. Nothing too bad, and most dash cam audio is pretty bad where this one is pretty clear otherwise. The only other issue I have is after leaving the car when traveling (more than 2 weeks) the dash cam time resets. So whenever I return home from a long trip I need to login to the cam, reset the time and format the card. (note you need to format the cards every few months on all dash cams just to make sure there are no issues)
@@WorkPlayDrive , "(note you need to format the cards every few months on all dash cams just to make sure there are no issues)" Do you mean to remove old footage to give room for new? I was thinking they usually start writing over the oldest footage when it fills the cards capacity or is that not what you mean? GRDIAN should be thankful for your endorsements, I just ordered their new KRIOS PRO after reading your feedback on their products.
The camera will always overwrite the oldest unprotected footage. I forget often and go months without wiping the cards. The format is more of a preventative maintenance thing just to refresh the card.
This is a single camera system, but it's priced so well buying 2 cameras will cost far less than a good stable 2 camera solution. I'm going to grab a second one for the rear to replace my Cheap temporary cam very soon.
Yes and no, it’s best to get a cam that does time lapse 1 frame per second and full on recording when shock or motion is detected to save card space. And it’s also best to get a cam with built in battery minder. (Shuts off when battery drops voltage)
I just ordered their Krios Pro version but for anyone else looking, they have a 15% off XMas sale running and they have a refurbished section too. (currently this DEFENDR+ for $79.99
yes, you can also tap into the other power port in the console which is on all the time. Either way you will want to get a discharge prevention setup like this amzn.to/2stLMhi to prevent you from getting stuck with a dead battery. This will allow you to record up to a et length of time or until your battery reaches a safe discharge voltage. It also has a manual switch for when you park you car in the garage safely you can disable the camera. Keep in mind the 64GB SD card will get you around 5 - 6 hours of footage at 1080P
Thanks so much. I'm newly retired and just wanting to begin a bit of doing things myself. I just may go with the cam running when I start the car. Even though the guy who owned my Camaro (that I just traded in) before I did, added an amp, then when he sold it left all the wires from the original harness cut, and I ended up splicing them all back, adding wiring kinda scare the crap outta me. I subscribed a couple of days ago and love your videos.
If you got time to relax and start some DIY stuff go for it. I don't mind digging in and figuring out stuff, but I do not like cleaning up other peoples messes. I would love a 24-7 coverage too, but I like the audio and video quality of the Grdian over the alternatives. If you are looking for parking protection I have tested the Thinkware F770 and a friend of mine has been using it for many months now. The F770 will do front and rear camera at 1080p and run while the car is on. It hard wires into the battery and accessory line with built in battery drain protection. When the car is off it will do a few different protection modes. My favorite is where it takes a time lapse (to save space) then if shock is detected it stores i believe 3 minutes before and after the shock as a standard video. When you return to the car and start it, the camera announces how many events triggered the camera. I tested this camera and the audio is useless when the car is driving, but ok when stationary. The video is pretty good day and night. The overall cost is quite high at almost $400.00 but it does exactly what it's supposed to do all in one small package. something to consider if you park it and stress about leaving it somewhere. Dash cams have a habit of paying for themselves over time.
my concern with dashcams is that it can be used as evidence against you even if lets say you are driving 33mph in a 30 zone and someone slams into you you are technically speeding
Very true, I'm on the fence with using the GPS functionality. I may only be using it for car runs to do location mapping and speed when having fun. One of the reasons I got a dash cam was a few years back a friend was hit by a woman who backed into her at a stop sign while moving out of the way for a truck. The woman who backed into her immediately got out of the car screaming "you hit me" My friend stayed in the car, when the officer arrived the woman proceeded to say not only did she hit me, but then threatened my life. Too many whack jobs on the road, I have a camera in the front and the rear. GPS and speed tracking on this cam is simple to unplug and I believe I can also disable in the app.
I find hard-wiring directly into an existing circuit is a much easier & cleaner install. In our case it does not get easier or cleaner because you can wire it directly into the mirror. Why use the power port on the passenger side? I have done this with my radar and plan to do it with my dash cam. Check out Blend Mount they offer a variety of wiring and mounting kits. If you feel so inclined you can easily fabricate these wires yourself and purchase the taps at Radio Shack or E-bay. Link is here: www.blendmount.com/index.html

Thanks
When I park for a few days I unplug the cam it’s recommended to do that or get a power management device on line with it.
@@WorkPlayDrive thanks boss!
Great vid! Would love to see you do a radar detector install! Crossing my fingers.
This is the greatest installation video. Thanks !
Hi is Challenger or batter or ignition by default? If I plug the power into the ash tray while the car is off and the light turns on does that mean it is ignition?
If the car is completely off and the driver door is open then yes it’s in the battery position. The default position is accessory
Just purchased two - and the code reflected a $10.00 discount... Thanks for the vid. Still waiting on that shaker hood install video...
Awesome, all you guys with 2 of them are making me jealous! You doing a front and back install or 2 different cars?
Two different vehicles. Can't show favoritism to the Challenger without the wife wondering why I didn't install one in her SUV. ;-)
ATTN Dodge, can you please provide us with a constant power and ignition power on port at the mirror, thank you!
😂😂
That was an awesome video!!!! Exactly what I needed. Have you considered installing a cam recording the back of the car? Do you have pros or cons?
The Power Magic Pro works for all dash cams with the power plug (cigarette lighter plug) . you can set to stay on for 12, 24, 48 hours it and forget it. the cam will go off when the timer hits the limit or if your battery drops below a set voltage. here is a link amzn.to/2lp0mVo
do you have a rearview camera? if so, can you please help me understand where to connect my rearcam wires to the reverse lamp? or do you have a video on rear light? thanks.
Great video. How do you feel about this camera? Would you recommend it??
Thanks for the reply! I'm going to give it a go.
And the folks at Grdian are great. They take care of my questions and get me advanced gear so I can test and put together these videos for you guys.
what about the power outlet in the center armrest, is there a way to make that only work when the ignition is on?
No, that outlet is on all the time no switchable fuse
wow... great video very informative. Great job...
Thank you
What’s the gps module for these cars come wit trackers already
Did you use the same camera for the rear?
For the rear I was using a cheap cam, but I am picking up another good one just to be on the safe side.
are you looking to add one for the back? I checkout their website but it's not fully clear to see if there is one available.
This is a single camera system, but it's priced so well buying 2 cameras will cost far less than a good stable 2 camera solution. I'm going to grab a second one for the rear to replace my Cheap temporary cam very soon.
So if I want my dash cam to be recording at all time ( parking mode ) all I have to do is move the fuse to battery slot?
Yes and no, it’s best to get a cam that does time lapse 1 frame per second and full on recording when shock or motion is detected to save card space. And it’s also best to get a cam with built in battery minder. (Shuts off when battery drops voltage)
I just ordered their Krios Pro version but for anyone else looking, they have a 15% off XMas sale running and they have a refurbished section too. (currently this DEFENDR+ for $79.99
isnt there a fuse box inside the car under the steering wheel?
Nope only under the hood and in the trunk.
So, switching the fuse to "Battery" means the cam is running all the time? I'm assuming this little cam isn't a huge battery drainer?
yes, you can also tap into the other power port in the console which is on all the time.
Great job
THank you !!
Life saver
Does this interfere in any way with the side pillar airbags?
if you run it over the side pillar air bags yes, the route I show in the video goes above and around the outside of the airbag.
my concern with dashcams is that it can be used as evidence against you even if lets say you are driving 33mph in a 30 zone and someone slams into you you are technically speeding
Awesome
Thank you 🙏
I find hard-wiring directly into an existing circuit is a much easier & cleaner install.

Do they record sound or just video...might not want to hear some of the things I say to idiot drivers! 😁
Yes, but you can turn off the audio in the settings.
Do it backwards
