I Expected Better & I Don't Like Dijonay or Maya | The Proud Family Louder and Prouder Reaction

  • The new Proud Family Reboot Louder and Prouder was underwhelming for me. I especially had critiques about the characters Dijonay and Maya. However, there were some things I liked about the series, but I'll have to keep watching the rest of the season to see if my initial feelings change or not...

    I feel like they were reworking characters and got it wrong. They wanted to give Maya a personality and she just became an activist (but in a over the top unnecessary way) they could have introduced her as Penny’s new best friend and had DiJoney move away. Her character would be much more likable if she was quietly and privately encouraging Penny to be a better person without their other friends around. It would be more realistic.

    • @Naesthetycs
      @Naesthetycs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +74

      I agree. I definitely feel like they forced it with Maya's activist personality. It seems like in this show most of Penny's "friends" are against her or low-key dislike her (Dijonay, Lacienega, and now Maya), but Zoey and Michael are neutral and usually aren't against Penny. Penny's friend group just isn't the best unfortunately.

    Michael is definitely gay, the producer (or the creator?) confirmed in an interview that he was always intended to be gay but because it was the early 2000s, there was no way Disney would've let them get away with being open about it.
    "Sissy" was basically a stand-in for "f*ggot" which is what he realistically would've been called during that time.

    • @Naesthetycs

      Thanks for clarifying! I never realized sissy was a stand in for that word, but that makes a lot of sense. I'm happy that now they can be more open about Michael's character and the show can portray him in a way they wouldn't have been able to in the early 2000s

    My problem with Maya is that she's one of those activists so extreme that you can't stand it one bit. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be a Protestant girl in their community. but that her personality and character falls 254/7 in her entire appearance becomes exhausting.
    another thing that undoubtedly makes me dislike Maya It is that she has very edgy attitudes and even borders on double standards and misogyny, like not supporting her friend in basketball just because "women don't get paid the same" (which is true, but it wasn't hard for her to support her partner), that she always has a cold attitude while reading books as if she hadn't nothing mattered to her (typical mentality of "i'm not like the other girls, I read books😍😍"
    and the cherry on the cake. It is very hypocritical of Maya that she claims to be loud and a defender of women's rights but that she hangs out with girls like Dijonay and La Cienega (who have a history of mistreating Penny and Zoe).

      It's interesting that they made both the dark skin black girls masculine in this show, and it's disappointing. I think Dijonay deserves better. I never understood why her hair was blonde in the first place as a 14 year old Black girl. It just never made sense realistically because Black people are usually not born with blonde hair. Her hair being blonde indicates that she dyed her hair at a young age, so I agree that they should have made her hair darker. Possibly, her hair color may correlate with her name Dijonay, like Dijon Mustard which is a similar color to Dijonay's hair. Overall, they just did Dijonay all wrong.

I do have opposite feelings towards Maya tho, as I did like her and she’s really the only reason why I kept watching this reboot in the first place. I honestly think it’s good that she was a girl this time cuz of how I felt like we already had enough strong “woke” black males in tv shows (Exs: Aaron Jackson, Huey Freeman), and had they switch Maya’s and KG’s personalities, I think he would’ve just been another rip off of Huey. So yea, Maya’s addition to the show is just refreshing to me.

    I don’t like the reboot, I watch it based on the nostalgia from when I watched the original as a teen. But it feels like they’re doing too much. Some things that should’ve changed they made worse, like Dijonay. And it seems like the colorism is still there and that’s annoying.

    Well, 8th grade or 9th grade, I was 14 years old when I was in 9th grade. The American grade system is pretty weird.
    I really wish a lot of the gags from the OG series had just died off like the abusive slapstick dynamic between Suga Mama and Oscar. 9:19 Kinda like a scapegoat when everything goes south?
    I really wish Dijonay wasn't always portrayed as a boy-crazy gossip.
    Spoiler:
    Duke doesn't show up at all in the first season from what I've seen.
    It really feels like Trudy might have been tricked into spending a thousand bucks on tracking down Suga Mama's family. Sugar Mama's family was retconned and the site just popped up with an invitation to Suga Mama's family reunion. I wish Trudy would have respected Sugar Mama's wish on finding her family. I'll just say it here. Sometimes, you don't want to know where you come from because where you come from sucks and you don't want to relive it and certainly not expose your kids and grandkids to it.
    It's nice that Michael's dad doesn't appear and is just regulated to being mentioned in the reboot. I like how Michael rebels against his dad, who could have been homophobic in the OG. It just seemed like he was embarrassed of Michael and just kept him to being on the bench and being the waterboy.

    • @Naesthetycs
      @Naesthetycs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, I wish the new series created a better dynamic between Suga Mama and Oscar. I'm so tired of seeing their toxic relationship. And I wonder if they're going to bring back characters like Duke from the OG series into the new series. It would be cool to see.
      That's true sometimes you don't want to know where you come from. And Suga Mama definitely did not want to go back to her home town and relive that trauma from her childhood. I guess we'll have to wait till season 2 to see how that ends, since that was part 1 and the season finale.
      I think it's nice Michael's dad doesn't appear either. I'm happy the show is portraying Michael as someone who is free and comfortable in his skin despite what others may say. I think in the OG series Michael's dad wanted him to be more "masculine" and didn't like how Michael expressed himself. Michael's dad gives off that "be a man" mindset that many men have and project to their sons.

    I'm not too sure if your views changed as the season went on and eventually finished, but I feel like the characters got worse. They want to try to justify things like Oscar getting beaten by everyone by making him have little to no good moments. But then why would you keep that going at all?
    The Maya character is interesting to me because I feel a lot of people have pointed out TPF's colorism, and so it seems their solution is to introduce a dark skinned woman who really isn't about the struggle but just wants everyone to do what she tells them. It feels like someone got really offended and so retaliated with.... Maya.
    Also I don't know, they tried to make Dijonay better but she still does stuff like reveal Maya and KG are adopted by a gay couple, and then leaks that couple's address without remorse because... gumbo?? And she shows no remorse, with Trudy and Suga Mama sighing about it?
    It weirdly enough feels like a bad time capsule of what the 2000s was in terms of morals in cartoons, even doing worse than the original show did in only ten episodes. Wow.

    • @Naesthetycs
      @Naesthetycs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I still have mixed feelings but a lot of negative feelings about the show. I definitely agree that the characters have gotten worse. I'll be releasing a video sometime this month on my thoughts on the season now that it has finished. I hate how they always make Oscar get mistreated and beat up. Also, I hate how they portray him as unsuccessful. How was he been making nasty snacks for all this time? Why can't they portray him as a successful business owner who makes good snacks? I'm tired of his snacks being nasty. I feel like these characters aren't growing. With any characters in any show there is usually growth and change as time goes on, but with these characters it's not like that.
      They continue to do Dijonay wrong. She's the character that gossips and tells everyone's business. Even in the original series she was like that. Now that they have phones, it's way easier for Dijonay to spread rumors through text. That was wrong of her for exposing Maya and KG's parents and also their address. It's ashame. I was hoping for better, but so far the series in underwhelming.

    • @Isellsimpsandsimpaccessories
      @Isellsimpsandsimpaccessories 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Naesthetycs Honestly I walked away from it with mostly a negative experience. Oscar's character was totally flanderized in LaP, they really liked those scenes where Oscar got beat up so now he's just a jerk with no positives so he can get beat up more. If they can't stop making his snacks nasty why not just have him find a new dream. It'd be a good moral about how even when you're in your middle age, your job isn't defined. Your life isn't defined you can keep changing careers and gain new experiences and it's fine.
      The only positive I remember in the LaP is she seems to help Penny with that college episode thing. Her just casually walking in Maya and KG's living room as Trudy and Suga Mama basically say she can't be trusted... I don't know, that didn't feel funny to me even though they clearly wanted it to be. LaCienega being more of an obvious enemy is cool but then it turns into a question of why do they really hang out with her? You don't have to have someone in your crew just because they are the leader's neighbor.
      I feel like some of the morals are GOOD, but the execution is bad or it's more like the root of the moral is good but it's not good itself. An example is with the teacher episode, it IS good to help someone out but it is not good to not establish boundaries with a person. Yes her life is in shambles, but if you want to lash out at the people helping you out in a nice way, they have every right to cut you off and let you deal with your business on your own. Or how the episode about LaCienega's family ends with this forgive and forget thing, and I get that it is family and really no wrong answer exists but just wrapping up what seems to be years of abuse with the mom apologizing to her sister and not her daughter feels like they didn't know the problem. Also I just didn't feel that bad for LaCienega because she doesn't have many positives anymore. The one where Oscar opens a theme park like... for why? Why does it need to exist they could have done a better episode for Lizzo.
      I could also just be petty because with the news about Suga Mama's family apparently her magical sister no longer exists which means that episode probably isn't canon anymore. Which upsets me because that was one of my favorite character episodes because of the ending with Suga Mama and Oscar.
      I just don't care for mean spirited content and a lot of LaP feels mean spirited.

      Yeah it's all bad. I forgot about Suga Mama's sister in the original series. I didn't realize that she wasn't included in the last episode when Suga Mama goes to visit her family in Oklahoma. I actually liked that episode with Suga Mama's sister too. The end of that episode is one of the rare moments we see Oscar and Suga Mama get along. It does seem like there is a lot of mean spirited energy in Louder and Prouder from the relationship between Suga Mama and Oscar to Penny and her friend group. It's a mess.

    I think the show was afraid to rewrite a major character like Dijonay too much, which is why she was just embellished not improved and her role as Penny's "best friend" wasn't changed. I think they think people *like* Dijonay, but they really should have just rewritten all of Penny's friends, or decide that the point actually is that all of her friends suck and it's not just for comedy purposes that they suck.
    Maya might work *if* she was actually intended to be a Soap-Box Sadie who they fully meant to be missing the mark due to her immaturity. If she was meant to have empty arguments and her activism was misguided *as a flaw* not a virtue signal. If she was supposed to be completely missing the point of activism, and have her learning what activism really is. But she's written with complete sincerity. But I think she would have worked best if her brother was the faux-activist and she had his personality and was a more quiet, *real* activist without actually trying. As of now she's just a strawman.

    Honestly, I think the problem with the proud family in general is that it's a good concept but created by the wrong person, this man is clearly a colorist and have problematic views and his story telling reflects it and how he portrays the characters, which is interesting when I think about it cause I remember liking Bebe's kids that he directed but it's been a long time since I've seen that so there may be some problematic things in there too.
    A while ago I watched a youtuber called ToonrificTariq do an interview with him and he asked him about colorism within the show and he keep being deliberately obtuse about the conversation and couldn't give a straight answer, pretty much Dijonay was literally made to be a caricature of dark skinned black women He was going to name her delinquenita or something like that, Dijonay is pretty much how he feels about black women so I highly doubt he will do anything with her character that's positve. I would link you to the video but Toonrific Tariq made it private which honestly makes me side eye him a lot because why would you private a video like this?

    You guys definitely spoke on this too soon. I think reviews should be done after a season is done. The characters are dynamic they have their faults. They are not perfect and that is excellent writing imo. They are annoying and yet lovable at the same time. Dijonay is not the exact same as she was from the original series she is different and better in a way. She sticks up for friend Penny, sometimes will go with the flow like Zoey, and is annoying at times. 😂
    What are your thoughts currently after the season now being over? This series to me is a lot less negative and mean spirited compared to the original. This one has a lot more love put into it. As a child watching the original, I only gave it views because that was the only black family cartoon TV series for me to see BG's. I watched it because I felt obligated to, I didn't like Penny's family or friends everyone was just so mean and nasty. It turned me off so I would barely watch the show.

    Again, what are you thoughts on this series so far?

    • @Naesthetycs
      @Naesthetycs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree it is better to review a season after it's done. It's hard to review a season based on the first two episodes. I do plan to release a season review on my channel soon now that the season is over. I think Dijonay is different and all the characters are different in a way, but there are some things about Dijonay that are the same like her being a gossip and boy crazy which I don't like. But a show isn't a show without conflict or some type of drama so I understand it has to be written in there somewhere through the characters or through situations the characters are put in.
      Not gonna lie, I really liked the last four episodes of the season compared to the first episodes. I like that the show is addressing social issues and how cultured it is. It was nice to see the episode with LaCienega and her quinceañera and the last episode highlighting historical Black towns in Oklahoma. I do think this series has more positive messages within each episode that children and adults can learn from. So, I definitely see the love in this series that you're referring to. However, I still feel iffy about Dijonay and Maya's characters though. I'll be posting a full season review soon sharing more of my thoughts so stay tuned for that. Thanks for watching!

And people mainly black conservatives have a better argument why their virtue signaling about slavery 1619 project rant does not work. Personally, what I expected from a reboot was more growth and not just pick up where they left off. A reboot doesn't have to pick up where it left off, it can literally be anything, like the show "Bel-Air" which is a reboot from Fresh Prince of Bel Air. The show has the same story line but the characters and their traits are completely different.
      I understand they're still in 8th grade and kids are still growing and evolving at that stage in that life. I think the show would be more realistic if they showed that growth in the show. I understand Dijonay is going to be Dijonay. She is known as the gossip and the "friend" who may backstab you. But I feel like she doesn't always have to be that way. There needs to be a point where she acknowledges her behavior and recognizes it's harmful to her friends. That's more realistic to me. I do agree with you that the show is realistic and authentic in other ways, but I still think it could be better. I will say I liked the 2nd half of the season better than the first half, so I'll continue to watch going into the next season and give it some time.
