Mixing 1910 and 1920 together to make a 1915 is absolutely better than either one separately. Did that yesterday and it was easily one of the best blends I've ever had.

Love Rare Breed, so good. I do like 1920 but recently was at an event where we got to taste all 4 OF whiskey row bottlings and 1910 really impressed me.

OF 1910 is my favorite. I was lucky enough to find an OF SB Barrel Proof, which I have not tried yet. Would be unreal to find a bottle of OF Series 117 Series.

Rare Breed is always a solid go to. It is rich, flavorful, delicious and never fails to impress. 1920, especially since the new label came out, has been consistently going down in quality, most likely due to higher demand and less aging time. For the good price and high quality, it's Rare Breed all day every day.

I agree with your feelings on these two. I much prefer Rare Breed to OF 1920, especially for the cost and availability. If I'm going to buy an OF product I much prefer 1897 BIB or the Signature 100 proof.

I’m so glad I’m not the only one that feels that way about 1920. Some customer I met at a liquor store told me it was the best shelf pour out there, so I bought it the same day I bought my first Rare Breed and I didn’t really like the 1920 much at all. I went out and bought 2 more Rare Breeds since they were scarce for a while.

I was disappointed by 1920, but didn't ever actually dislike it. It tastes like... bourbon. I started to almost like it after the halfway point of the bottle, with a glencairn glass and some chewing, but Jesus, I don't get the hype. Does it drink below its proof? Definitely. Is it amazing? I don't think so. Rare Breed is just lovely, on the other hand (to my pallate). Hell, I find 1792 more enjoyable at half the price of 1920. 🤷‍♂️

I've had all the Old Forester dated series 1870, 1897, 1910 and 1920 at this point. I like the 1870 because it is very drinkable neat. 1910 is great but a little darker in flavor profile and a little more heat than 1870. 1897 and 1920 require ice for me to enjoy, but I would give the nod to the 1897. A plus for the 1870 is that I am able to purchase it at $39.99. Rare Breed is a favorite - I really get a heavy butterscotch note from this one.

  • @NorthWestBourbon

I absolutely agree with your guys's scoring on this match! The price and availability of these 2 bottles is great. RB at 116 proof at 50 is a fantastic deal and the only reason I don't have a few backup bottles is because I can find it easily. OF 1920 at 115 proof at 60 is well worth it and a great deal, but I'm not always in the mood for it. So RB wins. 👏🥃

Great episode. I prefer Rarebreed but I like 1920 a lot. Or did. I noticed there was something "different" with the last bottle of 1920 that I had. It wasn't even a new style bottle either...it just didn't hit me like it used to years ago. Maybe my palate has evolved or changed.

    • @stuffandwhiskey

Rare Breed gets this one for me every time I try it blind. And I definitely get the banana on OF 1920 BUT I’ve always gotten southern sweet tea which Erin completely nailed. She’s the only other person I’ve heard say that about OF. And 1910 has it even stronger which is why I use less 1910 in your JD+WDO+OF 1910 blend. I love sweet tea but not in my banana creme brûlée pancakes:)

I've got both of those. Like them equally for their own reasons. Can't go wrong with either of them. 1920, has the banana note, but I didn't get the green banana. Also it was a bit dry. But the sweetness was well balanced with the proof. I didn't get the synthetic sweetness, or fingernail polish notes at all.

We've found 1910 to open up with some time, and the sweetness to be in the vein of maple syrup and brown sugar, but that being said there is definitely a camp that doesn't love 1910. It seems to be a divisive profile.

Another great comparison. I've not tried 1920 so I'll respect your analysis and will not purchase it! However, I do like 1910 and have a couple stashed.
Rare Breed is OUTSTANDING, but also not a daily drinker for me and I suspect most due to price, but I do have several stashed for special occasions :)!
I'm sipping Jefferson Reserve Very Old Small bath tonight and it's quite good as well, but may be a bit overpriced.
My two daily drinkers are Wild Turkey 101 and Evan Williams BIB as neither of them can be beat for flavor at their price and availability!
Purchase the good stuff as you can afford it and enjoy on special occasions especially with good friends.
I suggest you Zero in on your preferred lower priced daily drinker and ENJOY LIFE daily in Moderation and splurge with the good stuff with your good friends!
    Cheers!

Rare Breed is my go to good bourbon. Not really that into WT101 so my mixer/utility bourbons are usually EW 1783 or Old Granddad Bonded. As much as I would like to offer the entire EH Taylor collection to guests I don't have $59,000 to spend on bourbon.

Both of these can be harder to find in L.A. - Rare Breed even more so. 1920 is usually ~$60 and can be found at Costco a few times a year for ~$45 - Rare Breed Rye for ~$45-50. On the other hand, Rare Breed bourbon is usually mid-$50s and stocks disappear fast and have yet to see it discounted.

Interesting.. I loved 1920 when I tried it in the liquor store... not as much at home... not sure the difference, maybe it was an older bottle? But I do still like it... I got a good deal so it works. I do also really like 1910 too. I tried 1910 and 1920 at different times so I've never had them head to head. That said Rare Breed is still my go-to and as mentioned before I like it even better when it has warmed in my hand.... I didn't get that as much on 1920, but I still really like both of them but here, Rare Breed is in the $50-$65 range but 1920 is going way up and is in the $65-$100 range (That's Canadian money so you do the math) I will have to try 1910 again... the only Old Forester I didn't care for is the plain old 86 as it literally had next to no nose, but the taste wasn't too bad... not as good as WT 81 but close so I may use it as a mixer some time. That said I've not had a WT or OF that I would not drink again... I honestly wouldn't buy Maker's mark (regular and 46) nor would I buy Buffalo Trace again.. they are too expensive for mediocre pours and for some reason the last handfulls of times I've had Maker's mark (both regular and 46) I've gotten caustic chemical burns in my mouth..... it's so weird, I've tried many other brands at much higher proof points but none make my mouth sore like Maker's Mark when I have more than a small single shot of it... not sure what it is.

Based on how many whiskeytubers love 1920, I figured I had just bought bad bottle. There must be some bottle to bottle variance even among batched products, right? However, these tasting notes are exactly what I got of mine - sour banana, weird plastic-y dryness, nail polish remover smell. I'm glad to hear some other people had the same experience with it.

We always try to enter a bottle into 2-3 matchups and then we do a weighted average to the scores from that bottle on the spreadsheet we maintain over on Patreon. We feel like that gives the best impression of a bottle over time. That said, we film in 3s (three head-to-heads in an evening) and this bottle of Rare Breed popped up in this week's episode against 1920 and also popped up in our very next filming an hour later against the travel-exclusive non chill filtered Rare Breed. We typically don't think there's a lot of influence as we spend a lot of time clearing our palates between the pours, BUT our results on next Thursday's video may say otherwise.😉

Is it just me or does Rare Breed get better, the closer it is to body temp? I compared 2 glasses I poured at the same time, one I let sit out at about 20-21 Celsius, and the other I held in my hand, turning the glass every few minutes for about 10 minutes or so, tried them both and the warmer one was sweeter, more caramel came out where as the cooler one was more peppery, more cinnamon and a touch of cherry came out. These blinds are ruthless at times. We have heard quite a bit of commentary about how a lot of people don't love the newer bottlings of 1920 nearly as much as the older bottlings though, and our experience in blinds tracks with that as well. That said, we've since finished that bottle of 1920, and the last few pours were quite enjoyable... enough so that it has us considering purchasing another (even though we said we wouldn't since the last two were pretty big disappointments).
