  • Some people have said the new label of Old Forester 1920 has more than just a new label. Has the whiskey inside the bottle changed, too? Once we determine our favorite between the two bottles, we put it up against other crowd favorite; Wild Turkey Rare Breed!

Hats off for taking an episode headed straight for the bin and turning it into a standout. Great stuff! Meanwhile, I've never taken 1920 and RB head to head and wonder. I regard them equally, but they are very different...

So excited to see this video bc these are my 2 favorite readily available burbons to date. I go back and forth between these 2 burbons a lot. Been through a lot of Rare Breed bottles and 1920 bottles so I have experience in both. Rare Breed to me has more spicy notes than 1920. It's a great burbon no doubt. If I had to pick between the 2 I would go with the 1920. My thinking on this is because I get a huge Cherry note on the 1920 and to me it's a Cherry bomb and I love it. The flavor profile has always been consistent as well. With my pallet, I don't get the dominant Cherry note on the Rare Breed like I do the 1920. Both great burbons and I love both just prefer 1920. Thanks for the video!

Love the trajectory of this video. Too much fun! We’ve blinded these two a few times and could probably flip a coin most days but so tend to gravitate toward the Turkey profile. Ultimately we all win with both of these on the market. Great video guys!

What a great episode! It’s so refreshing that you didn’t just tank the episode when you realized there was no change in the 1920. Great decision. I like OF but I am a Wild Turkey guy (in this realm anyway). Regarding Four Roses….no, not for me. Anyway, thanks. This was a fun episode.

As a new subscriber let me tell you that I'm loving your channel. I'm a bit late to the whiskey party, but learning fast and your channel is really helping. I wondering if you've ever spoken with Jackie Zykan from Old Forester. She is a great ambassador for them and she can speak to all of the nuances in the various blends. Last two things, I loved the dog appearance and Sara is right this time around. Sorry Chad!

You guys made me consume more than I wanted to tonight. I have to say I am on Team Chad on this one. 2021 has been a pretty dismal year for special releases and if you ask me what are the best bourbons I have had so far in 2021, Rare Breed is on the list. 1920 is not. I like 1920 and all with its candy factory explosion, but compare it to Rare Breed and Rare Breed is like a rickhouse explosion drizzled with caramel.
Rare Breed just has a bit more complexity and all of the things you want in a great bourbon, which is not a knock on 1920 at all, which is a great bourbon. But which would I rather drink on a given day? Rare Breed hands down. I like Nerds and all, but they aren't something I can eat every day. WT RB... any day of the week and twice on Sunday. That's all I'm saying.

I'm with Sara on this one. I love OF 1920. I wanted and expected to love Rare Breed, but I just don't. RB is relegated to the cabinet while OF is on the bar cart. But I haven't tried them side by side, though. Now I've gotta see how that goes for myself!

Great show....nice review. I have gone crazy trying sooooo many different Bourbons and I have really like the OF products. 1910 and 1920 are my favorites. I love the charred flavor of these OF whiskeys. 1920 especially, I make an Old Fashioned with them and instead of a simple syrup I use real maple and OMG. Best ever. DASH o bitters with a teaspoon of dark amber real maple syrup, and Woodford Reserve Bourbon Cherry and a drip o the juice with a chunk of clear ice....boom. Best OF Old Fashioned ever.

I think I just found my new favorite channel! Love the 1920, but yet to get me lips on the RB Wild T. Saw the new 1920 label in Vegas at Total Wine and thought wtf? Nice episode. P.s. Total Wine had some nice additions available, stocked up, looked like a criminal at checkout; Four Roses Small Batch Select, Russell's Reserve Single Barrel, ...and then across the pond Brunichladdich Laddie (OMG), Deanston 12, and Compass Box Hedonism, after loading up had to walk away from the large variety of Tennessee's Belle Meade, which if i saw first would have done me in straight away.

Some days I'm in the mood for an apple. Other days I'm in the mood for an orange. I love them both, but find it next to impossible to compare them. And if I was forced to compare, like you said, I would probably pick different winners on different days. Definitely a tough one. I've recently had a leaning toward 1920.

I'm truly entertained because I love both bourbons. At first the Old Forester 1920 was better, but over time, I really decided I liked the WT Rare Breed just as much. Rare Breed is a little better value for the proof and now I just rotate both and never put them up against each other since they are both wonderful just different.

SOLID!!! I mean...honestly there isn't a wrong choice. These are the episodes that make me re-think...why chase the taters and the allocated stuff. I did the side by side and tonight, it was the Rare Breed. Side by side, Rare Breed just had that deeper richer body, total butterscotch and cream with that musty oak nose. Great stuff!!!

I've been trying a bunch of bourbons. I'm not crazy about the watery ones like the 80 proofs. I only like the 100+. I drink it straight with large whiskey cubes as to not water it down but get it cold. So far, the 1920 is the best whiskey I"ve been able to find at any price point. But it's a little out of my budget for a daily drinking so I roll with OF 100. But I added Wild Breed to my spreadsheet to try and evaluate. Appreciate other peoples take on stuff even when it's different than mine. Taste is subjective. Maybe I'll like the RB as well and save a few dollars. Don't know.

  • @chriskman71

I would certainly drink the rare breed, only after I was sure there was no old forester anywhere. I feel like I would drink the better stuff first, and save the rare breed for the, you know later. Rare breed is great, I just feel it is too, loose. The OF is tighter and I taste everything equally. I am never going to pretend to taste all the different weird flavors. I always felt the turkeys, all of them, sat around, with one melted ice cube, and then somebody poured a splash more of the whiskey in. It just isn't as tight for me. Cohesive. I am goofy, and I know it. But I do very much enjoy rare breed. Maybe I had a bad bottle, but it was off enough to not buy another one to find out.

“Flaws” wasn’t the right word, I think we eventually course corrected to personality traits or quirks. Both amazing bourbons and your typical bourbon drinker wouldn’t normally be in this situation where you’re trying to analyze them and compare them against each other and report back about it. At the end of the day, they’re both great values for the experience you get.

I’m team Chad here with the Rare Breed for the win. It’s got complexity with its sugars, spices, and oak… it’s always, and I mean always, on the shelf (whereas, I have to go looking for 1920)… and it’s $15-$20 cheaper.
(Also, I often get heartburn and my stomach acids start reacting to immediately to OF 1920, but I don’t have that same affect with RB. But that’s just me.)

Rare Breed is one of my go too’s but 1920 is a little more complex and a step above in my opinion.

I guess I am the guy with the tuba shouting how good rare breed is, sorry, hahaha. I love OF 1920 also (keep both on my shelf at all times), but give me my rare breed. I can't ignore the viscous mouth feel, love it

Nice work. My profile usually aligns more with Sara, but I’m with Chad on this. Actually probably because of that musty note… gives it character.

I get RB for 40 and 1920 is 60. No brainers for me but do enjoy 1920, the only OF I like. Love all things Turkey

I get RB for 45-47 and 1920 for 54. They’re equally good in my book. Since I prefer the 1920 the extra few bucks don’t matter to me. Even if RB was 40 I’d still prefer the 1920 at 60. Just because I like it that much more. I drink four bottles a month. So that’s just my preference. And I’m weird like that lol. If I wasn’t me, I’d get RB every time.

I disagree completely. The new label has a lighter mouthfeel, a shorter finish, it is sharper and overall lighter in flavor. It is good but there is less charm.

100 percent agree this and evan b.i.b are not the same whiskies nothing wrong with new 1920 but i prefer the 1910 and old forester 100 proof more.

Y'all are great, love all the videos, reviews, etc. Wish I was closer and could connect with a barrel pick adventure. I truly appreciate the "drink this or that" concept, but think it would benefit from a blind setup just the like flight fight videos to help alleviate any partiality, just a thought. Thank you, keep up the wonderful work!

Great. Now I have to do this. I like both. 1920 is my jam though! Rare Breed is a little too much Cinnamon for me. But back to back blinds might change my mind?

1920 > Rare Breed, but I think it all comes down to what your palate craves. The Old Fo banana note just does it for me.

Soooooo weird. I love Rare Breed 2 cubes of ice. Never had 1920 but JUST walked out of the liquor store with both of these. Great video
