Don't feel cheated. You are just exploring everything to its fullest extent. I always did the long method too. It helps you realize what will be good for your army and how to use them better.
"Our Cadre shall crush them" about 2 seconds later, "Fall Back!, Fall Back!". I know they're pathetic in terms of physical strength. But comeone that was utterly pathetic, even for Tau.

Truth be told, I usually did well turtling early and fending off the enemy attacks, (Turrets are my friends!) And then working on how to take out the enemy from there. Usually at least 2 basilisks were there providing long range fire. and it was usually ended with a Baneblade Coup de grace. (or a couple of Leman Russ with Hellhound support if no relics are around) I'm still shocked that a baneblade is so cheap in terms of Population. It's the same friggin cost as a basilisk, while a Leman Russ, inferior in literally every way, requires 5 pop. But I have been able to hold on for a surprisingly long time with the basic turret/heavy trooper line. I was able to hold on for two solid hours when attacking the Chaos stronghold in the west, while my Eastern army went on the attack, (even held out against a couple of bloodthirsters)
I agree, and it works fine against 1 base, but there are some things unique to 2-base that change the game. 1. They start out with double everything you have. Double production, double requisition, double power, and can secure the map in double the time it would take you to, which means that rush is coming fast, and its coming hard, and when one base is attacking, the other is producing and teching, meaning you can't take the fight to them. But the second point is worse. 2. Density of Dakka. The Imperial guard gun line is very good, but what happens when a full enemy army faces only half a gun line? This is the problem, because you have to defend not 1, but 2 choke-points, but since you don't have 2 bases, you can only produce units at half the speed, run out of resources twice as quickly, and can bring only half the dakka to bear against the exact same army. Every single time I have faced a two-base enemy, they always completely break through the line. But why can't I beat a two-base, but I can beat the chaos stronghold? Simple, at least as far as I can see, unupgraded cultists SUUUUUUUUUCK. It got a bit hectic at first, but as soon as I was able to hold the left, I was able to reinforce the right, even through the bloodthirster...somehow.
A cool (and ridiculously OP on Easy and Medium, but pretty much essential on Hard mode) strategy DK had, was that all base structures remained on the map after a province has been conquered by the player. This has strongly favoured turtling style and HQ spam to increase turret cap in order to even further fortify the map when an enemy faction attacks a player-controlled province. Having the T2/T3 buildings already set up/upgraded before all enemy buildings were destroyed, also allowed access to all goodness right off the bat at the start of new game and essentially circumvent the necessity to spent planetary requisition for garrisoning troops and instead allocate them to deep strike/forward base and honour guard. The IG could abuse this strategy to an even more humorous extent by placing the Mars Pattern right before the game ends (once MP was placed, at the start of a new game there was no requirement for T4 upgrade to build the Baneblade - the Guard could simply start building it straight away). The IG campaign was the most fun to play imo and perhaps easiest to complete on Hard once you've gained enough experience with this faction: Once Lukas had acquired his 2 Vindicare Assassins as part of his honour guard in the back and 2 squads of Regimental Bodyguard with Commissar Gebet upfront with Psyker for Curse of the Machine Spirit, the Guard was unbreakable. By. Any. Means.

I know I'm late but I have the whole collection of this game on steam may I ask why the physical copies have so much mor diolige that makes it better.. like all faction will say the same line over and over and over again depending what you command them to do .. it's to the point where if your fighting chaos all the hertic units will scream the same line all at the same time if you blow the squad up with an earth shcaler or any explosive effect. And they say the same fucking line no matter what causing them damage and it is the same for every faction.. when u had the hard copies as a kid it was not like this 😕is there a way to fix it I want all the dioluge not the same thing repeated over and over and over again at first I thought it was just the expiation packs to save more storage... but damn I guess notb

IG gunlines shred anything with a good mix of lots of plasma and grenade launchers.

Oh yeah, the turtle methods works best here. Have a strong defense and then push out once you get a large enough army.
