Some excellent comping from George on Ed's solo. GB is really selfless; the mark of a man who has nothing to prove and simply wants to make music.Great.
Saw Dizzy in the late 1980s play this song at the Pacific Amphitheater in Costa Mesa, CA. What a thrill. He also asked us in the audience to sing "salt peanuts, salt peanuts."
This is phenomenal! Two legends - Dizzy Gillespie & George Benson, on stage together playing a classic tune by Diz! Man this is true biz that brings life to a fizz!! This needs to be put on DVD.
Dizzy the Creator of bebob I love you and I met you at Port Harcourt jazz festival rivers State Nigeria west Africa , from Lawman music nig a,k,a Law's of jazz
Thanks.Recognized, but haven't seen on video before- couldn't recall name! almost though Jimmy Heath before his solo.Great video- no bonehead James strap on wives club stuff here!
Ed Cherry was smokin’ and not jokin’! Going riff to riff speed and dexterity and with great sounding Chorus pedal effect. Off da Heezy! 1990 concert in Florida?
I love these performances from back in the day! They’re always a jewel and amazing to listen to and observe. George Benson is an incredible guitarist! It’s always incredible to watch how he interacts with the other musicians. He’s not afraid to back up everyone. You always see him paying attention to the other members and playing accordingly so as to not play over them and allow them to display their talents. But when it comes time for him to solo, he absolutely kills it every time! Love his face at 10:05 too😂 Bass solo was sick too! Had to repeat 12:08-12:16 like 4 times. That’s cool that even the bassist got to display his talent as well. Don’t see that happen that often. Great performance.
Que lindo video. A mi juicio el más grande y carismático músico de Jazz. Gillespie, como visionario quería difundir el jazz a todos los estratos sociales y no dejarla como una forma de expresión para unos pocos, algo que deberían entender muchos.
George does not look like a happy camper when it is doing his thing and right before George did his thing he looked at the other guys and say hey it's my turn to move out the way I love George Benson his ode to Count Basie is one of the best albums ever
Great solos. But for me just the rhythm playing of Benson is pretty much staggering. His solo is top shelf. The drummer wins by getting ready for the gig, looking in his wardrobe for a while and go: Yes, this is the right gig for me to wear those sunsignal, butter yellow-pants my grandma bought me for x-mas!
Ed Cherry just went "off da heezie" and George Benson was definitely impressed. Incendiary, and ballistic. Ed Cherry is going supersonic speed. Incredible!
Both were super, Ed just pieced together a better "story" with his solo, and kept the theme of the tune, while GB was all over the place, probably from being self conscious that another brilliant guitarist was on the stage. Happens all the time.
A Night in Tunisia seems to be the ultimate relation tell-all. It seems like when they each play their solo, you can almost hear them describing their relationship with whoever. And honestly, poor old Dizzy doesn't seem like he had any type of relationship with a woman at that time. Just my opinion.
Great.Unique grouping also. This will help keep the Death by lethal SONGBIRD listening - Bimbos w/ Masters Degrees bloody Whack offs away! The intro is perplexing.A nice adaptation Dizzy surely embraced.500 stars
Yall are smokin, this was George's wake up call from the Master Diz, he took evryone of George's weak licks and executed them perfectly and modulated the keys = Benson ate up and Dizzy smiled why else ?
What a line up! Hard to believe but my hero George almost seemed a little intimidated on that stage, his solo sounding a bit choked compared to his usual effortless flowing lines, and even rarer to see George then get sorta semi-smoked by another guitarist on the same stage. George's big smile at the end of Ed's solo though shows what a magnanimous gentlemen he is, and as someone else said here, still the best with nothing to prove - if even on an off night.
George playing with the great Gilispie, Bensons knows his jazz comping master musicians know how to back other soloist and he kills it on the solo. The other guitarist was nasty sounds like has a slight flanger on his sound even the bassist was swinging on this.
I think I would rather listen to Benson's melodicism rather than McLaughlin of Holdsworth, but the latter are also wonderful. I just like more swing and melody. I hear joy in Bop and Post Bop.
Hello everyone, could somebody help me please? We’re approaching my dad’s birthday and we would like to offer him the same guitar strap as Sir George in this video, for he is a huge fan since the 70’s. Could you tell me which brand, which model or even where can I find it? Best regards.
Ed Cherry is a giant of jazz guitar!
thanks for saying who he is. a musician line up would be great
How I would have loved to see Charlie Parker & George Benson on one stage.

That's The Great John Lee on Bass!
Yep, largely in my top 5.
Ed Cherry killing it!
Al Hirt triple tonguing. Dizzy Gillespie and Al Hirt. True legends. Jazz, is a musician's soul exposed for the world to enjoy.

These cats can swing! That was a beautiful sound.
Benson's comping was tops on this video.
Al Hirt and Sam Rivers on the same stage.....love it!!
Rip Dizzy and thanks for your wonderful music
Benson was inspired .... and Dizzy as always .... pure magic
Absolutely brilliant. I am sure there are some great young black musicians exist but they are overshadowed by gangsta rap shut!
The best most innovated and smooth and cool guitarist in the world, him and pat m.
Benson precision...class
What a band!
Dizzy Gillespie and George Benson are great music jazz Masters , dizzy May his soul rest in peace Amen

George Benson was just like "Aw hell no, you had yo turn, this is MY jam son!"
*kick*
Sam Rivers on Tenor!
Looks like they cut his solo short in the vid. He was doing great!
Thanks.Recognized, but haven't seen on video before- couldn't recall name! almost though Jimmy Heath before his solo.Great video- no bonehead James strap on wives club stuff here!
Man that bass solo was Melodic, and that second guitarist's solo was killer, you've gotta be something else to match the great George Benson
Update: I now know who Ed Cherry is.
St.Louis Guitar Style
George Benson and Dizzy GIllespie sharing the same stage. What a set this was! Thanks for the vintage footage Funkithard. Keep it coming!
George Benson y los demás solistas con el gran DIZZY magníficos!!
They are all god each of them with the individuality of improvisation
great music as it supposed to be ...good vibes among them....what a bass player..
Ed Cherry was smokin’ and not jokin’!
Going riff to riff speed and dexterity and with great sounding Chorus pedal effect.
Off da Heezy! 1990 concert in Florida?
This was from the 1988 Jacksonville,FL JazzFestival

Diz is allways creating and he is on top form here.
Um time de primeira..só feras, magníficos,e geniais.
George Benson @ 3:39 & Ed Cherry @ 8:19 - Great Guitar Solos !!!
Funkithard, you are an angel. Thank you. Music as it's meant to be played. Miss Dizzy and Al, but going to see George on July 2nd in Cognac!
That's Al Hirt right?
Historical and epic union of brilliantly musicians! Can only dream to see them all Live in other dimensions! Thanks for posting!
Love the kid playing air guitar to Benson's solo
He was trying to mimic the bassist I thought
@@patbassman8251 Either way the kid's jammin
Wow, one of Benson's best clips
Amazing I wish I could have been there
Sam Rivers and George Benson stood out for me - their solos "spoke", though Gillespie cannot ever sound less than great too.
How about Al Hirt?
Sam rivers and Ed cherry are great drivers I like them
Great solos.
Is that Al Foster? We've all worn our polyester pants out when we shouldn't have.
That is Ignacio Berroa! I toured with him personally and he is one of the coolest cats on the planet
@@adamrafferty i can dig it!
I think Bensons soloing is great because his comping is crazy, he has full command of harmony.
I want to have Benson back my solo once. He can make my sucky solos sounds like something.
Ed Cherry just went "off da heezie" and George Benson was definitely impressed.
Incendiary, and ballistic. Ed Cherry is going supersonic speed. Incredible!
It was just "pretty"
Peter Callaway - Ed was good. George was super.
Both were super, Ed just pieced together a better "story" with his solo, and kept the theme of the tune, while GB was all over the place, probably from being self conscious that another brilliant guitarist was on the stage. Happens all the time.
+magovenor if by "pretty" you mean tasteful, agreed!
All of them had something to say.
Enjoy the jam without making comparisons.
Awesome Ed !!!!!
quelle merveilleuse version !

These guys make me dance!!!!!
This Cats 🐈 lat it down.... seriously brilliant 👏
George is just what guitarist dream to be great job by the others
Nobody has those Powerful Jaws Like the Iconic Dizzy from Drizzy
WHO IS THE SECOND GUITARIST? HE'S F....G, HUGE MAN.
@bayoubilt I am glad you like!!!! They are all such great players. I actually got this from a friend who had it on VHS and I digitized it. Enjoy!!!!
Great.Unique grouping also. This will help keep the Death by lethal SONGBIRD listening - Bimbos w/ Masters Degrees bloody Whack offs away! The intro is perplexing.A nice adaptation Dizzy surely embraced.500 stars
This is my country ♥️♥️
Yall are smokin, this was George's wake up call from the Master Diz, he took evryone of George's weak licks and executed them perfectly and modulated the keys = Benson ate up and Dizzy smiled why else ?

Amazingly done....
Dizzy's reaction to Benson is priceless. "Oh, !@$, this kid is dynamite."
Dont think so kid
Ignacio Berroa drums ;)

But nobody knows that other guitarist.🤦🏼♀️No Grammy, no signature guitar and his comping wasn’t good.
A complete ⛽ gas....
Agradezco a internet poder disfrutar esta excelencia musical
also Gary George's vocal work put him over the top.
Yes!!! Thank you!!
george's face at 10:00
cool video! it is very interesting where this is happening and which festival, is there a full version of the concert? tell me please : )
musica de verdad joyaaaaa
2:10 somebody's got to play the break.
incomparable.....mi maestro a distancia
4:44 Gillespie looks arounds GB:
How is he doing?
;)
Beautiful

The other guitarist is Ed Cherry... a heavy hitter in his own right for sure! Cool to see George diggin his groove as well...
He did great! but agreed about the (I think) chorus effect -- not needed. His chord solo at the end killed Benson -- he loved it.
Great audience.
I think I would rather listen to Benson's melodicism rather than McLaughlin of Holdsworth, but the latter are also wonderful. I just like more swing and melody. I hear joy in Bop and Post Bop.
Prime George, owns it. Nice Dizzy solo
LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!
Sublime M Benson !
Why no mention of Sam River's name on sax?
It just drives me crazy…as if there are only three people on that stage.
5 ***** FANTASTIC
LOL! GB from 10:05-10:12....
and the Who is the Tenor horn??? awesome.
+Luth Oliveira Sam Rivers!

I wish al hirt would've put his trumpet to the mic more
Dizzie!
Al Hirt did not look or sound like he was comfortable.....He is a Great Trumpet player...this night he was off....
100%. I just saw another video from this show titled blues that's equally awkward.
Lol like this version
Who couldn't be inspired with Dizzy urging you on
Awesome!!!!!!!!!1
Who is this other guy with the courts on! Yeah!
GIANTS!!!!
Sam Rivers !!
