One of the most PERFECT musical theatre songs ever written. It accomplishes everything a theatre song is supposed to do. It's an extention of the dialoge, the lyrics are conversational, it's melodic, the melody mimmicks the natural inflection of the lyrics even if they were just spoken, it establishes character, it even even establishes a metaphoric philosophy of the 'outside world' in the story. The list goes on and on...
“When I was a girl, my summers were spent by the sea…. So what?!” I love how she starts to tell a story like so many other songs in so many other musicals, but she acknowledges that none of it really matters to the audience! Kander & Ebb were true revolutionaries!!
Every little bit of this is perfect. Love how she does limited moments to show her reserved nature, how she uses her face and her voice to slightly emote but not drastically. She truly embodies the widow who has seen so much and holds on to her pragmatism above anything whilst still having a softer side that she subtly shows.
We can learn something from the sentiment of these lyrics. It isn't apathy, like some comments say. It's acceptance of the cards we're dealt, without becoming a victim. Life goes on, without regard for us or our problems, and we must make the best of it. That doesn't mean we're apathetic, but it means that we continue to look past whatever happens, not dwell on things and just keep going. Another way of saying, keep calm and carry on.
Also, be realistic. Cliff is 25 years old. He is able to flee Berlin when the Nazis take hold. She is a 65 year old woman with deep roots where she is. In the next few years, she's going to have to make some horrible, gut wrenching decisions, and her personal best course might be to not be involved, and to look the other way. She could try to be a "hero" but that could have dire consequences, and she will have helped no one.
@@johndalton3180her story arc is really sad. not so much for her, but how it shows the hard decision wars force people to make. it turns people who are otherwise good towards complicity.
ive heard so many performers sing this number and i dont think any will ever top this. the bitter sardonic apathetic-yet-accepting tone the resignation... no one else ive heard has come close to embodying the role in this number specifically as well as this
This is the most incredible performance of this song I have ever heard or seen, and the only one that literally brought me to tears, and I've seen many great productions of this musical. Fantastic!!
SHE is Germany before the Nazis took power. She is both brilliantly real but as theater... a symbol, a metaphor... she is Germany! This song was first performed and probably written for Lotta Lenya, If you donot know who she is, its worth googling. Kurt Weil's wife.
Yes, John Kander listened to a great deal of Kurt Weill before writing the score, and he knew Lotte Lenya would play Fraulein Schneider. She told him in rehearsals, "No, my dear, it is not Weill. It is not Kurt. It is Berlin."
I agree. Germany pre-war had a fascinating culture, and the nazis damn near destroyed all that, as do all those who think they're bringing their country back to an imagined past greatness.
@@markschildberg1667 I saw Lenya in the original production of Cabaret on Broadway. Kander & Ebb and director Hal Prince were so wise to cast her, because she radiated the authenticity of that time and place out into the entire show. Kestelman gives a superb, meticulously detailed performance of this song -- really incredible! Thanks for posting.

Came here because of Kreia, stayed because of Fraulein Schneider. Sara Kestelman is fantastic and deserves more praise for all her work.
She has an electric edge to her voice that really makes this song come alive. I like her rendition very much.
Kreia singing? I CAN DIE HAPPY NOW
You can also find her reading audiobooks too :)

A Kotor 2 musical would be theatrical perfection!

Yes, I love her interpretation.
She could actually portray a live-action Kreia. That's awesome.

I have to comment yet again. Perfect performance. A lady and mother, we all miss. 😊
Sometimes I miss real theater.
90% of the comments are about Kreia and nothing related to Cabaret or the song itself.

absolutely divine , she is perfect in the role - BEST EVER rendition of this song
'divine' ... Yes but, second only to Lotte Lenya's performance.

Ms Pea Lol the comments about apathy are elusions to a Star Wars video game that Sara Kestelman voice acted in.
