What I love about Natasha Richardson's version is that, unlike Liza's, is that she doesn't sound like she's extremely hopeful. She's vulnerable and wishes that things could be different, but her delivery and the music seems to indicate that she, deep down, knows this relationship is doomed. It's a very melancholy interpretation, and reminds me of Marilyn Monroe. The way she sings he'll hold me fast 💔.
I absolutely love this performance. You can see she herself doesn't believe what she's singing at first - she's forcing herself to believe the words coming out of her mouth, even though nothing in her life gives even the slightest hint that she's gonna be succesful. It's not about love, it's about her finally winning at something in life. At the end of the song, she's really come to believe in her victory delusionally, in true Sally Bowles' fashion. Natasha's take on Sally, one of the deepest roles in musical theater, really is one for the history books, which is even more impressive when you remember it's completely different from the take immortalized by an Academy Award-winning performance.
After her death there was this amazing review of her performance by Sheila O'Malley at Slant and this paragraph is beautiful. “To say that she made me forget Liza Minnelli is an understatement. I sat with my friend at one of the nightclub tables up front, and when Richardson stood in the stark spotlight, center stage, and sang “Maybe This Time,” something started going on inside of me. I can count on one hand the times I have ever felt what I felt as an audience member that night, and in that moment in particular. I started to feel hot. Uncomfortably so. Not one tear fell down my face. There was no catharsis with her performance, no letting the audience off the hook. I felt hot with suppression. All kinds of personal griefs came washing up with the tide as she sang, a shaky and desperate ragdoll up there, her arms dangling uselessly, her eyes mad and huge, trying to sing her way out of the pit she was in. I forgot where I was, who I was. I forgot that I had a glass of wine on the table, I forgot it was a show. I forgot about Liza Minnelli, and I forgot about comparing the sound of the songs to the well-known versions in my head. Instead, I was stuck in my chair, riveted, unable to look away, and at the same time I wanted to flee down the street, because Richardson’s performance was dredging up too much pain. At one point, during “Maybe This Time,” my friend reached out across the table and grabbed onto my hand. And so I was not having that experience alone. Natasha Richardson reached up and out into that blinding spotlight, and grabbed all of us by the damn throats, with nary a gesture-she never moved her arms. She just, with the sheer raw power of her performance, made us sit there and take it. If she could take it, we could.”
@@melizmatea How good for all of us that you’re here to tell us what others are really thinking. The writer obviously wasn’t capable of emotional catharsis, it all must be a ruse! Couldn’t be that the author was so enthralled by Natasha Richardson’s performance that it conjured up all those feelings, even though the author states it more than once.
Oh my goodness! I have not previously seen any of her interpretation of this role. I vaguely recall people criticizing her singing, but I think she is quite marvelous here. So much pathos and vulnerability - items missing from Minnelli's performance in the film. If the rest of her performance was anything like this, I am gutted that I missed it and she deserved that Tony Award.
The Sally Bowles character, as written, is that of a failed and unsuccessful singer. In typical US fashion that wasn't good enough so theyt cast a singer - Liza. The bench mark is not Liza but Natasha and so many others. (Nothing compares to Liza's voice - I am talking about performance and relevance)
I can't see how Minnelli's performance (arguably one of the greatest of all time in movie history) lacks vulnerability and pathos. It's different, that's all.
@@DAS1962that's not fair to Liza. She didn't win the Oscar just for her singing. She was phenomenal in the role. There's also a difference between stage and screen.
She has been gone 10 years now and it is still hard to believe. I saw her on stage in Closer and Streetcar Named Desire. She was terrific! She was wonderful! She was a damn good actress! I wish I had seen this! God Bless You Natasha!
She gave us a different Sally. Natasha gave us a Sally is not afraid to love, vulnerable and hopeful. Her Sally is like a flower who seemed to toughen up because of the exterior forces around her. She may be tough on the outside but she’s still the lovely girl she is.
Happy Birthday Natasha! I wish you were still here. You were a wonderful actress. I saw you on Broadway in Closer and Streetcar Named Desire. You were wonderful. I wish I had see you in this.
Maybe this time, I'll be lucky Maybe this time he'll stay Maybe this time, for the first time Love won't hurry away He will hold me fast I'll be home at last Not a loser anymore Like the last time, and the time before Everybody loves a winner So nobody love me Lady peaceful, Lady happy That's what I long to be All the odds are, they're in my favor Something's bound to begin It's gotta happen, ha ha, happen sometime Maybe this time I'll win 'Cause everybody, they love a winner So nobody love me Lady peaceful, Lady happy That's what I long to be All the odds are, they're in my favor Something's bound to begin It's gonna happen, happen sometime Maybe this time, maybe this time I'll win
I only heard of this song and musical because of Schitts creek. I have since listened to lots of renditions and this one is the most emotional for me. She seems numb. Holding onto a final shred of hope.
I saw Natasha Richardson on Broadway in 2005, doing Blanche Dubois in A Streetcar Named Desire. I was so sad to learn about her death only a few years later.
I’ve watched every version numerous times. Natasha’s is by far the most realistic to what the narrative is. I love some of the others but hers truly seems to embody Sally the most. She’s not the best singer, or the most glamorous or the most emotional -just a diehard fame seeking, naive young lady
A lot of people comparing this to Liza's Cabaret, but I would like to argue that maybe Liza's version wins in terms of musicality and technique, but this one by Ms. Richardson's wins through emotion, vulnerability, and relatability (the fact that her voice isn't as powerful as Liza's makes every sad little girl -- or gay boy, fine teehee -- able to sing this version).
Liza Minelli was dreadfully miscast in the role. Sally Bowles in "Berlin Stories" was a middle class British girl who was blonde and a terrible singer. Natasha Richardson was in a word, perfect.
Liza Minelli has by far the best performance of the song "Cabaret" of all Sally Bowles that have made it to some professional version of the show, but this belting method of hers couldn't really do Maybe This Time as much emotional justice; which is why I prefer this version of the song

Heart wrenching, so beautiful. If ONLY she had put the helmet on the ski instructor offered and also gone to the hospital right then they wanted to take her, she said no she'd be fine. Oh why, Natasha!

@Henry stone Yeah I get that, but this version has a touch of melancholy that I haven't heard in other versions.
@@baronsledjoys1363 I think it is because she is the better actress .. it wasn't a musical to her, it was a play

I didn't know this lady had so much talent. Shame we lost her.

Just treading that made me cry.
She said that right. Just wow.
Oh my gawd, talk about melodramatic! The writer is in love with her own writing, not Natasha!

I don’t see the need to compare this to Liza. Especially when a movie and a live performance are apples and oranges.
This is a brilliant interpretation! The loss of Natasha Richardson remains devistating.

So devastating what happened to this beautiful woman. Rest in Peace Natasha. You are forever loved.
Liza Minelli approached this as a singer; Natasha approached it as an actress.
Both were acted superbly. It just so happened that minelli’s interpretation was a top tier singer stuck in a low end club.
I dont agree, Liza 's version is iconic. Natacha Richardson gives her own interpretation!
No. Liza approached the role a film role. Natasha approached it as a stage role.
Pure star power and sublime presence. RIP beautiful soul...
I saw this Broadway production of Cabaret and Natasha was a wonderful Sally Bowles. R.I.P. Natasha Richardson. She left us way too soon. So talented.

I sure wish I could've seen this production!
Sorry for your loss Liam. RIP Natasha.
And to her mother Vanessa Redgrave of course. Sadly I don't think they were getting on that well before her tragic accident skiing.
Good vocal control
Great Singer 👩🎤
Maybe this time, I'll be lucky
Maybe this time he'll stay
Maybe this time, for the first time
Love won't hurry away
He will hold me fast
I'll be home at last
Not a loser anymore
Like the last time, and the time before

So nobody love me
Lady peaceful, Lady happy
That's what I long to be
All the odds are, they're in my favor
Something's bound to begin
It's gotta happen, ha ha, happen sometime
Maybe this time I'll win
'Cause everybody, they love a winner

What a brilliant interpretation of this song! It takes an actress of her caliber to deliver this kind of performance.
Miss Richardson was marvelous in this role because she understood the role xx
So freakin' brilliant!

She would only act in the revival if this song from the film was included. She does it full justice.
I discovered this today, I know Natasha Richardson from the movie “Wild Child”. Devastated to know she has passed. She’s so very talented.

would have loved to hear her sing with Liam as a duet...a strange duet "Phantom of the Opera'', maybe?
tweet him and tell him that
i know. I'm talking about while she was still living

and after listening to vera farmiga I think she sang it the best!
