In Photoshop, when painting with a brush at 50%, particularly when masking an adjustment layer, I use the “Fade Brush Tool …” in the Edit menu to diminish or increase the effect. Paint on mask at 50%, then Command-Shift-F or Control-Shift-F and tune the stroke with the slider. You can do this painting at any opacity, but 50% allows you to “fade” the complete range between 0% to 100%.

I offer this because I noticed you often paint at 50%

I acknowledge this was TK8 tutorial, but back in Lightroom I have a tip. I find the blue saturation slider in the Calibration tab has the strongest effect over all. But it has the side effect of making skies too blue, so I use the HSL tab to slightly reduce the saturation of the blues until the sky is just right.

Thanks Dave - another great video that I'm sure will be put to good use in my workflow. Regarding Linear profiles. I wasn't sure about them to start with but I persevered and now I use them all the time. Like you, (afterall, you taught me LOL) I begin with AUTO then a few tweaks before heading into Color Efex 4 where I start off with PRO CONTRAST then perhaps some other tools if I think the image would benefit from them. Thanks again Mike from NE Scotland.

Hi Dave… the paint through selection is just fantastic in the tk8. Thank you for the tutorial..👍🏻 PS.. I use my camera’s linear profile & find colour grading a little easier..

I find that I have better results and save time if I go straight to TK8 skipping any processing in LR., in fact starting with a s flat a file as possible. It took some discipline to not tweak at all in LR, but I get some surprise results I really like and once I got on top of the learning curve, thanks to you, OK, I am overstating a little, I like my results better.

Thanks for the feedback Dick I will have to give that a try. Are you using the Linear Profile in LR ?

  • @weisskm

Great tutorial as usual. I am using the linear profile for my Olympus EM1 II in ACR but I find even after clicking auto the image is very dull or flat. I can boost the contrast and a few other of the adjustments to bring it up pretty well. I do think it looks more realistic than the standard Adobe color profile. Also, my workflow is to start with my raw file in DxO PhotoLab4 and then export a DNG into ACR, do some adjustments, and then go to Photoshop where I may use plugins from Topaz, On1, the TK8 panels, and the original Nik collection. That's probably overkill. I'm still struggling with the TK panels. I marvel at your facility of using it.

I am having good luck using linear profiles with my landscape images. It takes a bit longer to get the image to where I want it, but it does feel like I have more latitude in the adjustments.

    Hi Dave
    Thanks for the great videos.
I am using the Tk8 panel with much pleasure.
Regarding the linear profiles i am still struggling.
I own a R5 that has camera matching profiles since the latest Lightroom update.
If i compare a neutral camera matching profile to the linear profile both auto toned and the linear with contrast +45 it still looks to me that the linear is duller compared to the camera matching.
But maybe the camera matching profiles pump up the contrast to much.
The linear seems more natural and has a more balanced histogram.
Maybe you could make an in depth video on editing landscape photos with the linear profile.
I am sure i ( and others ) could learn a lot from it.
    Regards,
    Hans

Another great video Dave thank you. I didn’t know the TK8 version was a free upgrade from the TK7 version. How do I upgrade it? I bought it over the summer. Thank you in advance.

One more thing, Dave, I'm using the latest Adobe 2022 and I've come across the usual update problem of not being able to transfer images from Lightroom into Photoshop. I get the message that Photoshop can't be launched or words to that effect. I noticed that it worked ok for you so is there something I'm doing wrong or a box to be checked/unchecked? A real pain in the butt to have to export an image then open it in Photoshop each time. Thanks, Mike

I don't have a remedy but maybe someone watching will know it. I have had issues were I sent the image to Photoshop and it doesn't go. When that happens I usually Click the Edit In Photoshop button again and then it will work. Since the new PS update it seems to take a bit longer for my image to open in PS...
