    Really pleased with your explanation on the beating heart of the CGT. Tips like this really help when it comes to experimenting. I love ‘mix and matching’ the techniques you demonstrate to us. It’s a great stimulus for creativity and that’s something to which I thought - when I first started using PS a few years ago, would be well out of reach for this 70 year old😊👍🏻. Keep ‘em coming Dave.

    Thanks Dave for all your awesome videos. I came across this one and is perfect in that I have been on an ambitious project of scanning all my Dads color slide negatives from the 50’s through 70’s as raw DNG. I have several from Cathedral Gorge SP from the 60’s and tons from Utah. I have some fun color grading ahead and your presentation of it makes it far more understandable.

    Dave, so glad you showed us the details behind the Color Grading Tool. I was surprised that you brightened the highlights first, as I thought the mountains were too bright and I would have tried to darken them, but after your explanation of the Color grading tool it makes sense! I have an image I think everyone would love to edit. I’ll touch base. Thanks Dave - Mario

    Hi Dave: Wow....this was a powerful and very interesting TK Friday video, and thanks to James for sharing this image. I loved seeing your approach to editing this image and it yet again, provides me with more knowledge tools for editing. Have you ever considered doing an live-event for an edit where people can ask you questions via a Chat Room? I subscribe to Paul Reiffer's channel on Capture One and this is an approach that is very popular for his community. Cheers, Keith

    Hello Dave, firstly I would like to thank you and Tony Kuyper for the TK Friday videos. They have changed the way I process my Images, and the results are fantastic.
    But I do have a question and a wish. Would it be possible to do a Video dedicated to the order in which one can or should process Images. I have a workflow which requires a Smart Object
    as a starting point, basically to apply a white border and do Denoise and Topaz Sharpening, which are my first steps after the basic adjustments in LR. And I was wondering if this
    was the right workflow. Would be nice to know where the myriad of adjustments in the TK Panel fit into a complete workflow. Does it make a difference where the actions are applied.
    Is there a logical progression? Thanks Dave.

    Dave thanks a lot for making such great educational video clips every Friday which helps one to really learn how to use this Complex Luminosity panel. Every Friday I wait for your episode to be uploaded on TH-cam to see how you go about transforming an image into making of an image. Can I however request you to share what is the suggested Workflow should one follow as in every episode of yours you go about your edits in an entirely different manner. Also could you cover the optimum utilisation of this panel on Portraits too. Thanks

      One thing I have learned over the years is that every photo is different, some more than others. Your question brings up a great point and on a future video I would like to discuss some of my thoughts on editing images. I used to teach private lessons and I would often get asked, "Can you please give me the steps for editing each image?" To which I replied, "I can't really do that because each image is different and requires its own uniques adjustments and techniques". I would suggest that each time we met for a lesson that they pull out an image that they want to edit and we would explore it and work on it and their skillset would grow in time. I was trying to bring that point across at the beginning of the video when I referred to the explorers, "Lewis and Clark". I don't know where I am going with an image edit but I will know it when I get there. I do however have beginning steps in my editing process and that is basic edits in Lightroom, using a Linear Camera Profile. I try to get the image as well balanced as possible at the RAW level. Then I send it into Photoshop and use my preferred method of Topaz DeNoise or Sharpen Ai or both if needed. Then I add a Color Grading Tool with a Mids 3 mask attached to it for clipping protection (this is a new technique I started using). I use the Color Grading Tool to add more balance and contrast to the image. This is my starting point that I like to use on each and every image. After that I look closely at the image and let it speak to me. Like I said, every image is different with its own set of issues. One of the reasons I like to show full edits on TK Friday is because I believe it is a great way of learning due to the fact that each image is different and hopefully viewers will pick up new tips with each video. A lot of things will be the same but hopefully it will help them to really observe their images and find ways of bringing them to life. I really appreciate you question Vivek and I hope this makes sense.

    Wow, another great video which again offers new techniques and reinforces those already demonstrated in earlier presentations. Loved following the walk through and will now try this workflow on my own images - with a few of your other tools. Again, thanks. By the way, I notice that you used the contrast method as per your last TK8 Friday rather than the triple split version. Which is your preferred method?

    • @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly
      @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Geoffrey. I think I like my other method slightly better but the new method is faster and pretty close to the other method. I think I will keep working with this method and only use the other method if I felt I needed a little more control.

      @@geoffreykingston4866 I use Topaz DeNoise Ai for my high ISO images. It works well for both removing noise and sharpening. Dave, I love your TK8 videos. They have been super helpful and inspiring to me as I learn more about using this plugin. One thing that confused me about this video was your use of Opacity when painting through the mask. I understand that, if you want to build up brush strokes, you should reduce Flow and paint multiple strokes to gradually build up an effect. Opacity limits the maximum intensity of the effect, and painting with Flow at 100% but reduced Opacity will immediately apply the effect up to the Opacity limit, and further brush strokes will have no additional effect. Am I missing something? Thanks again for your great videos.

    • @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly
      @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Charlie. I have tried both methods and for me using a reduced opacity with a 100% Flow in the long run requires less effort. Example: I start out applying one stroke of paint with 30% opacity and I notice the result but I don't feel it is strong enough. I then apply another stroke of 30% and feel I am close. At this point I might drop the opacity to 10% and apply another application and now I feel I have got the adjustment. The adjustment is made with 3 strokes of paint. This technique really works for me. Both methods will achieve very similar results. I think it comes down to your own choice and comfort level. Note: I find with the flow method, when painting thru selections I need to lower the flow down to 10% or 5% to get the control I need. I really have to keep painting away until I hit the amount I need. However, one nice thing about the flow method is that you don't need to lift the brush to apply another application of paint, which is different from the opacity method with 100% flow. With the Flow method each stroke is building up without lifting the brush until you reach the 100% opacity level. With the opacity method using 100% Flow you apply a stroke and if you keep painting over the same area you are not building up more paint like in the Flow method. I hope this helps to explain why I use the Opacity method. Bottom line is both methods work...

    The only difference in the way about editing an image, I do the RAW edits in Capture One and then edit the image into Photoshop for pixel edits and revert back to Capture One where I generally do the Colour Grading which also give me an option to grade colours using the Colour and Luminosity values in various parts of the image. I feel the Colour Grading in Capture One is far better and superior to what's available in TK8.

    • @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly
      @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I use the Color Grading Tool for more that just Color Grading. I find it has many different uses other than just Color Grading but it is super intuitive and that is why I love using it. Remember it's essentially a Curves Adjustment which is a very powerful tool but it can be a bit challenging to use. That's the reason if I have a choice between using the actual curves or the Color Grading Tool I will choose the Color Grading Tool every time. There are times when I need to use the Curves Adjustment because some adjustments are out of the range of the Color Grading Tool. By the way, I agree, Capture One is a great piece of software. It is a great start, like you say, while you are still in the RAW format. I say if it isn't broke don't fix it. I think Capture One is a great starting point.

    Is Flatten on TK8 the same as merge layers? Or, different? Thanks

    • @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly
      @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No it is not the same. Flatten simply bakes all of the layers into one image layer. Merge layers is similar but it will only merge layers that are selected. You will notice if you only. have one layer selected the merge layer option will be grayed out and unavailable. Once you select two or more layers it becomes available.

    It is weird. The Sony's Alpha 7 RIII linear profile in Capture One looks nicer and cleaner whereas in LR is really... weird !!. It is as if you put a dirty glass in front of a picture and looked through it. That does not happen on the linear profile in capture one. Even if you click the auto button, the result is not nice.
