My first concert was Rory Gallagher, Fleetwood Mac and lining was Deep Purple. After seeing Ritchie Blackmore, my life changed. I was barely a teenager and saw that. Can you imagine? Ritchie is finally getting the recognition he deserves.

What do you mean by "...Ritchie is finally getting the recognition he deserves..."? Blackmore has ALWAYS been regarded as a legend. He's been up there with Jimmy Page since Purple and Led Zep were the ONLY two Super-Rock bands in the world. (In a close third place was Black Sabbath) Back in the 70's, kids were wearing either a Deep Purple T-Shirt with a silhouette of the members on the back OR a Led Zepelin T-Shirt with the Blimp on the back and the 4 symbols on the front. It was a simple as that. Page and Ritchie were the ONLY two lead guitarists anyone ever talked about. "Child In Time" is STILL contains the greatest Lead Breaks EVER written!!!!!

I was living in Southern California in 1974 when Deep Purple and ELP headlined the California Jam 74 Festival. That was the Mark III configuration with the inclusion of David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes. I was kind of a dud when it came to big festivals. I didn’t enjoy concerts with such masses of humanity. I had a dear friend at the time who went and so I able to live vicariously through her. So grateful to TH-cam that that festival has been posted and I’m able to transport myself back in time. Thank you, YP, for the doc on DPs early days. Well done!

In the late 90s, I wound up enjoying "bar shows" FAR MORE than I ever did big "concerts". Usually free parking, cheap to get in, I'd stand RIGHT in front of the stage, and often chat with the musicians after. Whole different kind of experience.

@@henrykujawa4427 I love the intimacy of smaller venues. Back in the day when there were music stores, they’d offer free concerts, and I certainly took advantage of them. You mentioned the 90s, back then when there were bookstores with music depts, I worked at a large store and we hosted many performers promoting their recordings. Miss those kind of venues: coffee, tea, books swirling around you, and great music being heard.

I was also at the cal jam festival in 1974, Black sabbath and Deep Purple were the best of the bands as far as I was concerned. Either way it was just to damn crowded and extremely hot, but very peaceful there were quite a few Hells Angels just kicking back enjoying the music.

    • @boomtownrat5106

@@fightforfreedom-mf5cz Outside of my friend who attended, I’ve never met anyone else who attended that festival. I forget that Black Sabbath was one of the featured acts. I saw them two years before in 1972. They were on a year-long tour, starting in ‘71, supporting the album Master of Reality. You were mentioning the Hells Angels being present at the Ca Jam. Possibly what was left from the Altamont concert? Maybe they mellowed a bit by 74? 😄

Since the early 70's DP has been one of my favorite rock bands. So I stumbled onto an earlier "story of DP" on youtube a few years back. It was basically fraudulent, reducing the band to 5 dudes that decided to start a rock band, started jamming in a warehouse and magically cranked out successful albums. It rang hollow, considering how awesome the "Deep Purple" and "Deep Purple in Rock" albums were.
This YP rockumentary on how DP came together sheds a *lot* of light, making the evolution of the original lineup an inspirational story, providing background on the unique qualifications and challenges of each member. It explains how their powerful albums weren't mere magic.

I recall seeing Deep Purple play at the Hollywood Bowl in 1968 or 1969. I was already a fan, so their album with "Ring That Neck" AKA "A Hard Road" was emphasized. Mind blowing was that tickets were just 50 cents each! I'm still a fan of all versions of the band prior to Blackmore's leaving.
It was fascinating to learn that while DP isn't necessarily considered the first "heavy metal" band, Blackmore was nonetheless the first heavy metal guitar player, several years before Hendrix' "Purple Haze."
This was a really fine documentary with so many bands that I didn't remember contributing to the arrival of DP. Thanks!

The first lineup is enormously under rated. Their 3rd album simply called Deep Purple is still one of my favorites such diversity. When you consider they recorded all 3 albums from the first lineup in just over a year, it makes the 3rd album even more amazing. Their cover version of "Help" is very well done especially by Rod and Ritchie. In hind sight, the Mach One lineup should have been given more time to develop, no telling how far it could have gone.

In the neighboring house, good Dutch people, the young guys I used to hear regularly on electric guitars going crazy, nothing offensive. I was a very quiet guy but I was interested in what they were doing. This was probably in the early 70's. I talked to one of the guys once and I found out they were massive Deep Purple fans. So that was my connection because I don't think I knew too much about DP in those days. They were sort of an underground band at that time and not too well known in my area. Thanks a lot for this valid contribution.

Thank you for this video, just perfect on a rainy summer day in northern Thailand. So many people think of the really big rock groups of the 60s and 70s and think they just sort of magically happened, but to the very contrary it is so often a series of lucky connections and word of mouth that gets certain musicians together. Bands like Deep Purple in any alternate universe would never have happened, but thankfully in this universe it did. Love all the archive footage of the various bands doing pivotal gigs, including the signature hair and clothes of the time. =)

Then Gillan and Glover joined and Deep Purple In Rock was cast in stone as the greatest live rock band. As a 16yr old tyro guitarist, I saw them play that album and more at Newcastle City Hall and that gig showed me where I needed to go as a guitarist. I never made it as life got in the way, but approaching 70, I am retired from The World and back out gigging again and reactivating all my favourite Purple numbers.
I was saddened to learn that Blackmore was not invited to the induction of Purple into Rock History. There would have been no In Rock, Fireball, Machine Head, Made In Japan etc without Blackmore - personal tiffs should never be allowed to alter History.

WOW. I've been a huge fan of DP for so long. Years back, I also got collections of both EPISODE SIX and later THE ARTWOODS, and have been playing the latter quite a bit this month. But I knew NOTHING about the background of the other members, or all the various bands that had been involved.
Crazy enough, for a short time in the late 90s, there was a bar band from Lancaster, PA called THE OMEGA MEN fronted by guitarist-singer Jonathan Sipes and organ player Susan Mackie (who at the end of each show would go-go-dance on top of her large Hammond organ). Jonathan once told me be based the entire sound of his band on THE ARTWOODS, which is what made me look them up soon after that. I must have seen them play about 8 times. Lots of fun.

One of the greatest bands ever , great music, superb line ups, and still on tour in 2024, purple has had some very talnted people. 2 singers would go on to join black sabbath as lead singer Ian paice is the on.y original Snd member from day @ even today purple sell out the stadiums and have just recently released three singles within weeks of each other, purple have had some fantastic singers and guitar players, each bringing something great history new to the band, one of the greatest groups to have
    Ever formed

As usual an excellent informative doc, some of the details I,m familiar with and have a copy of an Artwoods comp LP-its unfortunate that Deep Purple were troubled with clashes of egos as each member was talented in his own right and Chris Curtis was an articulate man but a troubled soul who sadly lost his way and died alone in obscurity!

Don't usually subscribe to channels with as many more and more patrons as you have. But damn. You've got some good well researched content here with video and audio clips to match. You're not just blathering on without anything to back it up. Sure your opinion is important. But having connections to why you feel the way you do is very important as well that

I wonder who's doing the interview for danish television?
I know that *Hans Otto Bisgaard* was the leader of *Brøndby Pop Club* at that time, and he encountered a lot of surprisingly big names there, despite being in his early 20s.
In 1970 he was hired by the danish radio (DR) and had a long career as DJ and host.
It's dificult to tell with that haircut. Hahaha!
