      Some great picks but a little shocked that my top pick Hasse Froberg & Musical Companion/We Are The Truth didn't make anyone's list, a total shutout = zero for 60. Somewhat related band Transatlantic made it onto a couple of lists & that's probably my #2 for 2021. In my opinion a major miss, I wonder if any of the panelists have heard it & what they thought of it? The Kick The Cat release was also very good, with Neal Morse Band & Big Big Train coming in just a bit below that one. Some of these like Pat Metheny's & Chick Corea Akoustic Band's albums to me are straight-up jazz

    Gents, thanks for taking time to do this episode as have really been looking forward to hearing all of your choices. Also, thanks for the 2021 In The Prog Seat episodes. All of you and other co-captains have brought a lot of excellent music to our attention [though also really enjoyed the episode you did on albums you did not care for too much or at all.] Once more, thanks for listing everyone's picks. That allows those of us wanting it to enjoy the episode more rather than be concerned with copious notetaking. My top pick for the year may be the recently discussed En Annan Varld by Agusa. Tracked down a copy and have been listening to it quite a bit since it arrived in the mailbox and it is headed into the car for the coming road trip. 2. Steven Wilson - The Future Bites

      @wolf1977 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm an absolute freak for anything that Roine plays (and especially also sings) on but gotta be honest that I only really liked the track "The Whirlwind" from More Is Never Enough. Not that everything else doesn't sound good but I already had live versions of the vast majority of these tracks that were at least as good as what was on this album. If you're a Transatlantic fan who doesn't already own their other live albums (Live In America/Europe/London) then yeah, I could easily see you buying this one & loving it

    I've always wanted to stay current on new rock, and since commercial radio hasn't served for a long time now, the only place to go, as far as radio is concerned, is college radio. You can still hear excellent new rock music to this day. But even college radio has not been very supportive of new Progressive rock, so I appreciate videos like this one. I would otherwise never have heard of most of these bands! When I first came across S of T here on TH-cam I thought "What a bunch of nerds!" Now I am a Prog Seat fan.

    Great show! And some real good selections all worthy of being in the top ten. I would like to offer "Unseen World" from BAND-MAID as a worthy top ten pick. This Band has come into its own starting from a traditional Heavy Rock/Metal sound evolving to a progressive slant over 8 years and 130 studio album tracks. The current album 'Unseen World' has landed in the category of being a full-blown progressive Rock/Metal/Punk/Funk offering. It would be criminal if this album is not taken under consideration. This band should not be slept on.

Shrill vocals have their place for sure, but I don't want to hear it all the time (Budgie, Rush) But The description of Glass Hammer's vocals as similar to Jon Anderson's was enough to deter me from that band, so to hear about this change with the new Glass Hammer album, and seeing the promotional video for it, I think you have guided me to something I am really going to like, so thank you!

The Abraham disc ( featuring Pete Jones of Tiger Moth Lilies ) includes great guitar runs and would make Andy Latimer proud ! Also praise for standing up for the new Steven Wilson disc . A so so Wilson disc is still miles beyond most other artists . Now Steven , if you have an ear for melody and both good guitar as well as outstanding female vocals , I highly recommend you give the British band Mostly Autumn's latest " Graveyard Star " as well as their previous disc . Prog or not The Future Bites is also my #1 album of the year; I've liked each of SWs solo albums more than the one before it and the last 4 have all been great. Styx have always been a band I've liked rather than loved but The Mission was excellent and Crash of the Crown is ten times as good, a real unexpected purple patch form a bunch of veterans. With Transatlantic, sounds like I made the same mistake as most people by getting the 90 minute version, I do enjoy it while it's on, but can't remember a thing about it once it's done, should have got the 60 minute version but not going to bother now! Maybe it doesn't count as prog (but I think it does) or if folk just don't care for it, but one missing here was Downes Braide Association's Halcyon Hymns. Definitely the best album Geoff Downes put out this year, (okay, the competition is not high) and while I find Roger Dean a bit overrated his artwork for the album is perfect, the album sounds exactly like the artwork looks, so have a glance and you should know straight away whether or not you'll like the album!

    Thanks guys. I have a question. I'm always interested in prog rock. I watch your prog seat episodes i read PROG magazine but i don't like much of the albums that are discussed. I just don't like the typical prog tropes. The bombastic singing and melodies, great instrumental techniques taking over the music etc. I like my prog more straightforward and maybe somewhat mild. I'm a big Rush fan, like Porcupine Tree a lot and more recently the last Wobbler is fantastic, i like both Astra albums and the Crownlands ep . I just can't enjoy a whole album of yes, king crimson, dream theater or genesis. And i give up on bands like liquid tension and transatlantic pretty quickly. Does anyone has any recommendations for a mild prog rock fan like me? Thanks

Released less than 2 weeks ago & not even shipping until Feb 2022...Sounds pretty good to me, this is what Bandcamp has to say: "The brainchild of the two Sandvik brothers, Sturle on guitars and vocals, and Severin on drums, Kosmodome’s music is riff-based rock with stoner elements all of which are placed within a progressive universe to great effect. Together, the duo bridges the gap between the explosive drive of bands such as Mastodon with melodic magic and retrospective, clever songwriting"...I like at least 6 of the 8 tracks here, the only ones I skipped were "Hypersonic" & "Orbit"

    I'll just name my #1 overall favorite prog release (and it's not even really close): Hasse Froberg & Musical Companion/We Are The Truth...Just downloaded it the other day, very good-to-great album. I like just about every single track & that's pretty rare, especially for a newer album released after 1979. It was released at the end of November. I also have their prior albums Powerplay, Hfmc, Parallel Life & Future Past. This is a very good band, really consistently good. They haven't released a bad album yet. This one is no exception, I'd give it like a 4.2 out of 5. Probably the highest rated/best album I've heard this year in terms of prog (and for non-prog it's easily Layla Revisited - Live At Lockn' 2019 by Tedeschi Trucks Band, recorded in 2019 but released earlier this year in July).
    They sound a lot like Flower Kings so fans of that band almost have to own these records. The epic 13 minute "Other Eyes" has it all, again very evocative of The Flower Kings. "Rise Up" is fantastic, great uptempo prog that could be at home on any recent Flower Kings album. When I saw the title "Yoko" to the 5th track I was momentarily afraid this would be a bunch of whale noises a la you-know-who but it's not, another very solid prog number. "A Spiritual Change" may be my favorite track but honestly it could also be 3 or 4 other ones too. Their lead guitarist Anton Lindsjö is almost at a Roine Stolt level & that's saying A LOT (I love Roine, my fave singer/guitar player active right now). The web site Spirit Of Progressive Rock has a nice overview of the band's prior albums & a short review of this new one, plus Bandcamp has the entire album posted. Destined to be a future classic prog album. At least a 4.5 out of 5 & could easily be higher to be honest
