  • SEIKO has just announced it is relaunching its SNXS series for 2024, official reference SRPK, under the Seiko 5 Sports line.
    Three colourways are available with the 4R36 movement, higher price tags and the same dimensions as the old model. Did they really need to bother? Is it blatant profiteering?

    Much debate! For CLARIFICATION I am NOT saying these new watches are not better than the original seiko 5. I'm sure the quality and spec is slightly better.
    My point is that this isn't what the 'Seiko 5' was. It was a simple, rugged affordable entry point to automatic watches. There are many others competing in the £300-400 space but were very few competing with the original Seiko 5

      I agree the price is too high (~$400 in the US), but I do think there are three solid upgrades: 100 M of water resistance (up from 30 m), the 4R movement with hacking and handwriting, and the bracelet (the old one was dreadful). And of course we've seen a lot of inflation in the past 4 years. I think it should be priced similar to the SPRE ("Dress KX") watches around $275-300 max. I'm also wondering whether the watch will sit lower, as some of the marketing materials suggest it might (there are no photos showing the back, however). I back of the SNXS juts out and the lugs don't bend down. Makes the profile of the watch look like a UFO. I think as with most Seikos we will see 25% discounts fairly soon. So the £340 will be down to £260 or so, and in the US $300.

    Blue one looks amazing, what they should have done is increase the size to 38mm-39mm, put screw down crown, and slap sapphire glass on top of the dial. If it could be purchased between 200-300 euros it would be amazing. I love the chapter ring as well. For money that they are asking you can get sapphire, screw down crown, and miyota 9000 series movement so basically they are asking for too much.

      37mm is good. I would even want it in 36mm. There are tons of 38-42mm. I never liked anything over 40mm. The trend before was bigger watches and that is why we have an ocean of 40-42mm watches. It's good that the trend now is smaller watches. I would want to see many offerings on 36-37mm.

    Maybe steep. But I'd rather pay that much for the new seiko 5 than pay for a comparably priced moonswatch that looks like it could be found free in a happy meal or cereal box.

    I got the chance to try them on yesterday and I have to say that they look fantastic up close and fit just as beautifully. The bracelet is a nice step up, as are the dial and case finishing. The champagne dial was especially impressive. Add in the improved movement over the original and it did feel like it was worth, if not full MSRP, what we'll actually be able to purchase them for.

    I got my SNKS77 about 6 years ago brand new in the box off ebay for £30, when the softlex got a bit scratched it's now got double domed sapphire with AR and a much better bracelet, came to about £100 all told. Loved it from day one but a truly fabulously thing now. All watch prices have shot up recently so if you want one of the new ones it compares ok with the competition, but grab an old 7s26 powered one if you can.

    i have several of the old style seiko 5 watches acquired mainly in the 1990s and in their day they were great value and along with the citizen eagle 7 were the only affordable mechanical watches you could get during the 80s/90s as virtually everything was quartz.theres a lot more alternatives now,so the upgrade is long overdue.i'm actually surprised seiko have even done this tbh.

    So finally they try to catch up with Citizen Eagle 7 in functionalities😂. i would still skip them as long as they use that UFO (from sides) profile, which is sad since the old 7000 and snk series fits me well.
    While I heard swaping the snx caseback with old 7000 solid caseback remedy it somewhat, its too much of a hassle.

    That is interesting. I’ve been keeping a eye on one of the older ‘5s’, but I’m not prepared to pay the £130-140, it’s often advertised at. The newer 5 range don’t have a model I’m particularly keen on, £260ish retail? So asking £350 for this latest reissue seems a bit steep.

    I would have thought RRP or around 300 rather than 400, which would have been more in keeping woth the dresskx price but seiko are known to not increase the price of a model once its set so inflation will play a role in the price increase. Still this is an obvious step up in finishing from the dresskx considering the application of mirror finishing. Its also a huge step up from the snxs (as an snxs79 owner) - finishing, bracelet, water resistance, ergonomics all miles better.
    Seiko bashers dont know what theyre talking about. They haven't even held the watch and are just bashing at this point because it's their raison d'etre

      @@perfectwrist23 I ended up modding mine with a curved crystal, strap and slimmer case back. I bought the watch for about £120 and ended up spending another £100 to do all that. So the upgrades made it a £220 watch. This new one has a curved crystal, a bracelet that won't need to be swapped, ergonomics that don't make it look like it's standing on stilts, useful water resistance and better finishing and movement. There's no need to pay RRP for the new ones when they will be readily reduced by 20-30% at which point you will be paying about £240. Which ends up making it about £20 more expensive all in.

    @pk1342 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I think a really important point here that people fail to understand is that SEIKO does not ever increase the list price of a watch once it's been released.
    For example the srpe53 DresSKX was released in 2020 at £260 RRP.
    That same £260 is worth £320 in today's money yet SEIKO has not changed the RRP to reflect this.
    The new SNXS at £340 therefore makes perfect sense and not just that it means that brand new Seikos become better and better value as the years go on!

      @@perfectwrist23 yes but they are grey market watches. The Seiko 5 line has also taken a huge step forward in terms of quality since then. The finishing on the old SNXS is similar to AliExpress brands like steeldive (I own an SD1970). The new 5 models like the skx GMT, field gmt etc are finished to a way higher standard.

    • @perfectwrist23
      @perfectwrist23  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes but they do the job perfectly as an introductory automatic watch which was their purpose. Cheap, fun and rugged. These new ones are undoubtedly a step up in quality, but maybe no longer a 'Seiko 5'. At this price you have a lot of alternatives to consider. You didn't with the old 5s

    • @pk1342
      @pk1342 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@perfectwrist23 this is true, the Seiko 5 line is trying to move up the ladder. Thankfully for those that still want the old ones they still seem to be pumping them out too.
      There is of course more "value" to be found with Chinese homages but they are just that - fake homages. I think the 5 line is really competing against entry level micro brands so they are probably priced as such. They seem to be happy milking the Chinese watch market by selling movements to the AliExpress brands as well so I guess they still profit in that regard 🤷🏽‍♂️

    • @catlike1
      @catlike1 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@pk1342 Totally agree. Plus Seiko's distributes through traditional retail channels (watch dealers and department stores), so needs to provide profit margins for the retailers. They sell the watches to the dealers at ~50-60% of RRP. Meanwhile, the Chinese brands sell via Aliexpress and most microbrands direct to consumer online, which is why the prices are lower. No middle man. Seiko has moved up market a bit because they can't compete on price given their business model. And they actually have to invest in developing new watch designs and watch components.

    Seiko started inflating their prices across all ranges in 2019 while simultaneously reducing the level of quality. Now the bulk of their production is focused on massively overpriced, poor quality watches with mediocre movements. The continued use of their rubbish hardlex crystal adds insult to injury, especially when there are much higher quality builds (with seiko movements) from San Martin et al. Only a fool would buy a new Seiko these days.
