Why I Don't Want to Leave Thailand for the United States

  • It's been a good run in Thailand, but it's time to return home to the United States. But why don't I want to leave? Thai culture has treated me so well and made me so welcome, and I wish we in the United States could learn some of the lessons Thailand has to offer.

You’re awesome Professor Amethysta!! Big big hugs!! Were you able to try the raw papaya salad in Thailand? It’s one of my favorites and the roti 🫓 🥰🥰. I’m sure Sapphire misses you! 🐈‍⬛

Oh...no, I didn't try papaya salad, and I'm bummed! I love papaya! I did, however, eat a stunning amount of pork slices on a skewer and sticky rice.
Sapphire sauntered into the room at my parents' house and was like "Oh...you. I see you're back. I'm ready to depart, if you'll take me to the car." Nonchalant and all. 😹

Yes, I'm glad the struck a chord! There are few threads around this spinning in my head - systems theory, two other articles, and how we give up identity. I'm sure it will all come out in articles. 💜

I had FFS in Bangkok in April 2024 and loved being there! I would move there in a heartbeat if I had the money to live independently. I loved the hospital I stayed in. The nurses were the best! The food was awesome. The malls, public transport and their international airport were just top notch. I wish I could go back to Bangkok for GRS but don't have the money for private care for this surgery.

Where were you in Bangkok? Like what hospital and hotel?? I went to Yanhee International and we stayed at a place called The Cuvee.
It's funny you say you can't afford the private care...I went to Thailand for the same reason! My insurance wouldn't cover me, and this was what I could do. I'm much happier in the end, though, so it worked out!! 💜

Cool, I'm glad you took something away! I have a few threads spinning in my head with systems theory, the history of queer theory, a concept called lenocracy, and how they fit into identity, trust, and happiness. But I'll get it all out, I promise! 💜

What a cool analysis. And yes I suspect it is going to be a culture shock to return home.

This resonates for many reasons. I know so many people in America who dislike driving "because I don't trust anyone else to drive carefully!" And this mentality doesn't fit my mind.. and I'm admittedly an anxious, fearful, untrusting person. I do trust other drivers to be safe on the road, and to follow the very simple traffic rules though....
I'm glad that you had such a wonderful, positive experience in Thailand. It fills my heart a little bit to see how joyful you are about it all, not just the joy from surgery, but also the joy from all the kind hearted kats (and yummy eats) you encountered on your adventure. Huzzah, life is beautiful!

      Life is beautiful!!
About trust...yes, we trust each other to follow things like traffic laws. I am not sure that's the same as what I mean. What I feel I observed was a culture that was in fear of repercussions for breaking laws, but glad to cooperate to get a common job done.
I read a book once that contrasted culture vs process. It's easy to change process, but hard to change people to believe they should follow the process. It's difficult to change a culture, but when you do, the best process naturally follows because the culture cares about it. I don't know that helps any more, but it's how I see the difference. 💜

@@amethystaherrick I understood what you meant, I was merely saying I agree that the United States is a very fearful place with untrusting people... And sort of mocking my own personal anxieties because driving is about the only time I feel "safe and trusting"... Sarcasm is hard in text, particularly when you don't know my brain. Ha!

Thank you, Kim! Trust...I didn't know its value until I watched a stray dog cross the street at the same time as morning traffic. As my wife put it "Everything just flows around it..." It was a thing of beauty to behold. 💜
